Cable news, Parker Spitzer and the color question: Is Rick Sanchez right?

height
Rick Sanchez(CNN/AP)

The Monday after CNN's Rick Sanchez crashed and burned, his former employer launched a new prime-time cable news show. The show, CNN's "Parker Spitzer" [yep, featuring THAT Spitzer, the former New York governor who frequented a prostitute], may have proved Sanchez's point.

Sanchez's rant on Pete Dominick's Sirius radio show will always be remembered as the one where he called Jon Stewart a bigot and suggested Jews run the media. But Sanchez was also speaking about media diversity, particularly prime-time cable news diversity.

Said Sanchez in an apologetic interview he gave on "Good Morning America" after the incident: "There's not a single Hispanic, a single Asian American, or a single African American [in prime-time cable news]."

He's right.

MSNBC: Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman, Lawrence O'Donnell

CNN: Wolf Blitzer, John King, Kathleen Parker, Eliot Spitzer, Larry King, Anderson Cooper

FOX News: Shepard Smith, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren

Not one person of color.

On "Parker Spitzer," the show's debut episode did not have any people of color on screen the entire hour.

People have been noticing the lack of diversity in cable news for some time. A 2008 report from Media Matters lambasted the general white maleness of cable news.

They found that 67 percent of cable news guests were men, and 84 percent were white. And that was in 2008, at the peak of the Obama presidential campaign, when everyone was talking about race and politics.

And when CNN announced "Parker Spitzer," the National Association of Black Journalists wrote a feisty open letter calling for change in cable news. From that letter:

"Are you telling us that CNN could find no one better than an ex-politician who quit being New York governor after consorting with prostitutes to grace America's living rooms each night?"

Ironically, CNN has made significant progress in diversifying its daytime news lineup, with Don Lemon, T.J. Holmes and Fredricka Whitfield, among others. As has MSNBC, with Tamron Hall. But tune in to CNN, MSNBC and Fox News any weeknight, and you won't see any hosts who look like Rick Sanchez.

Updated: The Maynard Institute's Richard Prince pointed out in an email that Rick Sanchez did not claim Jews ran the media, he implied they do. Prince asked in a recent column at the Maynard Institue, "If Jews controlled the media, so what?"

He quoted Slate's Brian Palmer as saying, "If Sanchez was referring to people in the television news business, he's wrong. Not one of the major television news operations -- Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, CBS News, or NBC News -- is currently headed by a Jewish executive."

They are all, however, of a decidedly pale complexion.

Sanchez had been on CNN for 3+? years and he never ever once criticized and/or complained about the makeup of the media lineup. People can’t now act as if he was somehow speaking on behalf of those who are not prominent (Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, etc.) in the media.

Sanchez’ rant was directed at Stewart because Stewart made him look like the jerk he was – no more no less.

Sanchez was right. And while I don't agree, why can't the Jewish question be debated before its thrown out as anti-semitic? For the percentage in the population at-large, Jewish people do have a large degree of technical (director/producer) and on-air jobs in tv, movies and media. Why is the question dismissed? And what are the actual numbers?

I dont know if it is just me, but Sanchez looks white. Just because he is cuban doesnt mean anything...his descendants are mainly from Spain which is a European country full of white people.

I thought it was common knowledge that Jews run the Media and Banks???

Is this not fact?

And running through that list, It appears there are plenty Jews getting primetime facetime....Maddow, Olberman, King, King, and Spitzer.

So, I don't see how they could be considered a 'minority' as well......I would file them under 'Caucaussian-Jewish Heratige'

Look at some of the names of the "no color" people anchoring the cable news desks.

You've got Irish, Scots, English, Germanic, and who knows what else.

Sanchez may be claiming that there's not one "person of color" on the major cable news outlets, but he should take a look at CNBC, where you've got all kinds of people, interviewing all kinds of people, about that lovely color green and how to make or lose it.

But where does Sanchez get his notion -- all too common a one, it seems -- that somehow "whites" are a monolithic group? It wasn't too long ago that the German-Americans and the Irish-Americans were at each others' throats, so to speak, and in other parts of the country, the Poles and the Scandinavian immigrants never would even want to understand "can't we all just get along". And let's not forget that in places like Hawai'i or California, failing to discern between persons of ancestries from Japan, China, and Korea could result in great embarrassment.

Sanchez himself makes a fairly simple blunder about "hispanic". A lot of the "white" people on cable news desks could easily be "hispanic"; even the Spanish royal house is ethnically largely French and Italian to say nothing of the Gothic heritage of much of the Spanish upper classes. And while we don't see her much on MSNBC except when she's reporting from the field, what of the lovely Elizabeth Vargas? She's not "hispanic"? Or does Sanchez mean "we don't have enough Mexicans and Central-Americans" anchoring cable news?

Sanchez was absolutely right that there is a disturbing lack of diversity in cable news.

For my own part, I'm more concerned about the distrubing lack of substance and/or fact, so I'm still pretty happy about Sanchez the boot.

How come Jews are not considered people of color? And why do Hispanics divide themselves between white and black? There's something screwy with the way we categorize people.

I'd say:

Sanchez was right about 'almost' everything.

I think he messed up about Stewart being a bigot, but his rant about more people like Stewart being in the media than people like Sanchez... you be the judge:

MSNBC: Chris Matthews, Rachel Maddow, Keith Olberman, Lawrence O'Donnell

CNN: Wolf Blitzer, John King, Kathleen Parker, Eliot Spitzer, Larry King, Anderson Cooper

FOX News: Shepard Smith, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Greta Van Susteren

Missed Mr. Sanchez's interview on Good Morning America but as other reports indicate there appears to be no doubt that his contrition for venting off the way he did is real. However, we are somehow left with the feeling that Mr. Sanchez deplores the absence of a Hispanic personality in prime time because he is out of a job, in other words, because he deserves to be the chosen one. There appears to be one fact that's conveniently forgotten: that prior to his rant, he was made fun of because he showed his ignorance in more than one occasion. Mistaking the Galapagos Islands for Hawaii as he did in one newscast and the even more amazing use of a racist slur in another (it doesn't mean he is a racist, only that he is — or hopefully, was — totally unaware of how offensive the term is) are but just two examples. As wrong as it may be to judge other capable Hispanic journalists by Mr. Sanchez's performance, there should be no question, in my opinion, that he has done very little to help them.

In your list of anchors, you left out a few, like Leon Harris who left CNN for a job that pays perhaps ten times or more what he was making at CNN, as a main anchor in the D.C. TV market. Look into that among others too.

It still seems to me that the fact that he was fired and then blackballed is evidence that his contention about Jewish influence on the Media has some validity.

Anderson Cooper was one of the males interviewing a white rapper Eminem

These nighttime news shows are often little more than rants by those whose political leanings are well known. Much of it is speculation as to the future actions of politicians, by those who supposedly know so much more than we do. Would that they would all heed the advice of Jim Lehrer, to the effect that perhaps the best course of action would be to reserve comment for events actually observed.

Diversity is important, because those in power often favor those who are most like them. Without diversity, we cannot have even a semblance of fairness. That having been said, some groups are clearly overrepresented as a result of the check-box mentality that insists upon a visible presence of all groups. Latinos are clearly underrepresented in television, except, of course, on the Spanish-language channels. The treatment of women, and, in particular, women who are older and perhaps don't look as good in the skimpier outfits (e.g., the plunging necklines, lingerie-like tops, and sleeveless dresses) they are permitted while men are allowed to mask their aging bodies with business suits, is even worse.

News Network is not the only place of no diversity - its everywhere. Like Rick I work in a very high paying field and got fired 7 times in a row. In many cases the job lasted 6 months. I was told that my work is great, personality is good and I treat people very well. Many lower ranking staff liked me. Problem was that at the top it was all white (many mediocre people with unrelated degrees) there was no diversity and I got booted.

Filed a complaint with Civil Rights Commission but they wont do anything.

What we as people of color need to do is stop whining and complaining and start using the power of the economic boycott. We should boycott these cable stations and their sponsors. But that will be a bit difficult because high-profile African Americans aren't as socially-conscious as they were back in the day . . . do you think Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, etc., would ever walk in a demonstration or picket line??? These people have been blinded by their millions . . . it's gonna take the rank and file to tackle this issue . . .I boycotted BP until they wrote President Obama a $20,000,000,000 check . . . I have no problem boycotting these cable stations . . . at least FOX lets you know where they stand, but these others claim to be so liberal . . . Dr. King warned us about the liberals who claim to love us but treat us in a condescending manner . . .

In case you did not know it, Jewish persons own or control almost all major TV networks including PBS and Fox. Now that GE (Jeffrey Immelt-Jewish) is selling 51% control of NBC Universal to Comcast it remains to be seen as to who controls Comcast. Rupert Murdoch's father is Jewish and his designated successor is Jewish as his children he deemed not competent to take over his media empire in UK, Australia and USA. Most TV producers are Jewish. Local Jewish temples offer television producer training.

Murdoch is not Jewish, nor are any of his ancestors (if it matters) They were Scottish Presbyterians, although he seems to have no religious leanings. His first wife was Scottish, his second Chinese.

mascmen7: The issue is not how much Jews own but rather the bigger question of diversity. Why when 1/3 of america is non white the top positions are overwhelmingly white? Why are there "school zoning systems"? Why do minorities never make it to the top despite ample evidence of their academic brilliance (especially asians).

Jews are favored largely due to their European origin (most are converts). Had they looked like Jesus, Christians would have treated them with he same disdain as they treat their god (Jesus).

Odd thing that we call DIVERSITY. Does it apply only to minorities? Do we apply this concept to every facet of American life? Is it legal? Is it moral? Do we have diversity and ignore one's abilities? What about diversity in boxing? Baseball? Football? The Boradroom? While certainly discrimination play a part in every culture throughout the world, does it always need to be applied, and more to the point-how?

Except for the "bigot" comment about Stewart, I don't think Sanchez has anything worthy of explaining or apologizing for, unless speaking the truth now means that one must apologize. However, his rambling discussion with Politico, to which I listened to portions of, was certainly unprofessional for someone purporting to be a newscaster. The last time I checked, spending your wife's money on prostitutes might be considered a tad unprofessional as well, yet Spitzer is hired. So, if CNN is trying to maintain an aura of respectability and professionalism, it makes no sense at all to hire Spitzer and their standards for firing Sanchez are thereby very suspect. Unless Sanchez is right, in which case it makes perfect sense on both counts. Personally, I think Sanchez was right in everything I heard him say, except about Stewart being a bigot.

Mr. Rick Sanchez was 100% correct. One does not need to be a genius to notice "this fact"in this country. Can CNN fire Wolf Blitzer for any reason? I doubt it! Right after Oklahoma City Bombing Mr. Blitzer without any source or evidence, pontificated that it was done by Iranians! CNN did not even confront him about it!

Good luck to Mr. Sanchez. I am not watching CNN anymore.

Yes Sanchez was right in what he said, only he should know that PC is what the press is all about, so speaking the truth on the air is OUT. While I cannot imagine that for such comments he gets fired, as he was doing a reasonable good job on the air, it only shows what turmoil the CNN network is in.
Rick Sanchez has been a good anchor and reporter, although he does carry the Cuban chip on his shoulder, which hopefully he can live down, and forget.
The problem is generally with the US press, where it is now owned by big corporations, for which the truth and open reporting is NOT guaranteed. These corporations wish to be PC, political correct, at all times.
Sadly by this new ownership of the media, the US press has fallen behind the world press.
One cannot really trust the US press any longer, as it surpresses so many news stories for PC reasons. Like the Muhammed cartoons, which no main paper nor news source dared show in the US. Shame on them.
Also when crime is committed the press never calls a spade a spade, as saying the color or background of the suspect, before pictures are shown.
PC will be the death of the free press, just like it was in the 1930th in Germany, it will be in the future in the US!

The problem I had with Rick Sanchez was that he brought his 'issues' with him onto the set. I got sick of hearing about the plight of the Hispanic. In addition, I did not appreciate it when he spoke Spanish and I let CNN know it. If Rick has problems with the media he should do something to try to change it. Cable news has bigger problems, msnbc and Fox are a disgrace. I am a die-hard liberal but I cannot stomach the people on msnbc.

Most of us are mentally trapped to think Jewish. Actually, it is safe to say that virtually every mainstream publication or or other type of media organ is "nothing more than a screen to present chosen views." The great battle over the last century has been a battle for the mind of the Western peoples, i.e., non-Jewish Euros. The chosen won it by acquiring control over essentially the complete mainstream news, information, education and entertainment media of every type, and using that control to infuse and disseminate their message, agenda and worldview, their way of thinking, or rather the way they want us to think. Since at least the 1960s this campaign has been effectively complete. Since then they have shaped and controlled the minds of all but a seeming few of us in varying degree with almost no opposition or competition from any alternative worldview. So now most of us are mentally trapped in the box the chosen have made for us, which we have lived in all our lives. Only a few have managed to avoid it or escape it, or to even sometimes see outside of it, and so actually "think outside of the (Jewish) box."

What happened to Oliver Stone is a good case study. The Wall Street Journal reported this past summer that Stone said that “public opinion was focused on the Holocaust because of ‘Jewish domination of the media.’” Stone also said that the Jews “stay on top of every comment, the most powerful lobby in Washington. Israel has f—– up United States foreign policy for years.”

Like so many others before him, Stone groveled: “In trying to make a broader historical point about the range of atrocities the Germans committed against many people, I made a clumsy association about the Holocaust, for which I am sorry and I regret. Jews obviously do not control media or any other industry.”

Joe Sobran who died this past week had this to say about Jewish media power:

“Jewish control of the major media in the media age makes the enforced silence both paradoxical and paralyzing. Survival in public life requires that you know all about it, but never refer to it. A hypocritical etiquette forces us to pretend that the Jews are powerless victims; and if you don’t respect their victimhood, they’ll destroy you. It’s a phenomenal display not of wickedness, really, but of fierce ethnocentrism, a sort of furtive racial superpatriotism.”

In 1996, reprinted in the May 27th issue of the New York Times, by Ari Shavit, an Israeli columnist describing his feelings on the killings of a hundred civilians in a military skirmish in southern Lebanon. Shavit wrote:

“We killed them out of a certain naive hubris. Believing with absolute certitude that now, with the White House, the Senate, and much of the American media in our hands, the lives of others do not count as much as our own.”

Peace.

America doesn't have the hearing for Rick Sanchez's remarks. Bigot seems like a harsh word to use in it's dictionary definition. What's good for the Jews. America routinely walks out on international conferences on racism together with Israel. America got a tin ear. Survey shows Jewish ethnic stereotypes score as a plus in all positive attributes without an Achilles heel. Survey shows white ethnic stereotypes have no Achilles heel. Survey shows ethnic stereotypes of nonwhites reveal fatal characteristic deficiences and flaws. Profiling anyone?

Reply to grahamkaye99: To be clear I have a masters degree in statistics and am a CPA. I have over 15 years of experienced and am internationally published (whites tried to block it so published elsewhere).

The "white science" was actually discovered by the Arabs and Greeks (see Wikipedia) and Newton and others put their label on it and published it. For example modern hand glider was discovered by Ibn Farnas as does mathematics (including numbering system is arabic). See Moor history (Wikipedia).

The non whites dominate positions in American universities. Almost half of top science faculty is non white in many major schools. Many American research companies and Defence Giants such as Lock Heed Martin have numerous non white researchers. You do not hear their names as whites take credit and never give them positions of authority.

The net result is that the smart researchers (this includes some whites too) have given up. You now have inferior non white managements running the same old same old. This class war produces mediocre products at high costs (as these white CEO's suck these companies dry - AIG, ENRON, CITIBANK....??). In the process jobs are outsourced to non white countries in the process, immigration is invited. China/Asia are now economic super powers.

Where does it end? The whites do not get it. GIve the jobs based on merit. Period. Give all americans a fair chance in education, jobs, govt. The white race is not superior - historically, morally, biologically or even philasophically. They are however, geniuses at deceit, propaganda and cruelty (Indian Massacre?).

Change the three hundred year old racist constitution and form a true "United States of America" if you want to be a power in the 21st century.

Sanchez is 100% correct. For instance, I am positive that the Publisher of the Washington Post would NEVER entrust his medical care to, say, an over-represented Jewish physician. Irrespective if it were a life, or, death choice. After all, what about an American Indian MD, or, maybe, a Congo witch doctor. It's time to level the playing field. Right? Farrakhan?

I don't think Sanchez deserved to be fired. In context his comments were relatively tame. But it is fascinating to see how Jewish folks see this totally differently. They feel his comments were inflammatory and "contentious" (NY Times). I didn't think his words were belligerent. Not being Jewish I don't see what the problem is. All I can guess is there is a very strong defense mechanism within Jewish people derived from thousands of years of intermittent tragedies. This is something I can't fathom, but I would like to understand. Jews appear to see Sanchez's statement as an attack, rather than a factual statment. Malcolm Gladwell should write a chapter about this. In Outliers he touches upon certain groups (such as Scots) having shorter fuses in certain situations. Bottom line for me is CNN's censorship and smear campaign against Sanchez was very sleazy. I just think we all need to relax...no one is complaining that there is a strong presence of Jews in the media. It's certainly a-okay with me. But let's not fire someone and smear their reputation for relatively tame comments. That is censorship and unbecoming of the United States.

I remember watching the Emmy's several years ago, and Jon Stewart won for writing. He went on stage with roughly 20 of his writers, all of them white men.

I saw the real face of Jon Stewart's commitment to diversity that night.

Liberals are freaking obssessed with skin color. Only a mentally derranged liberal would keep statistics of how many whites, blacks, etc. are news anchors. Nobody else cares or even notices. What seperates Sanchez from the typical derranged liberal is his obssession with jews. Most liberals just hate whites in general but he has the uber-liberal ability to discern a jew from your typical ignorant racist whitey and has recognized their evil plot to take over the world.

Sanchez is as smart or even smarter than President Obama on several counts. The problem is neither of them have accomplished anything to deserve the Main stream media hype. I'm sure the general public has lot more tolerance to put up with the nonsense for a short period before they realize the empty suit on both these charecters - it's very unfortunate that Sanchez has paid a heavier price so soon though Obama gets to hang on to his power a little longer!

Reply to peterg73: I think you need to read some peer reviewed literature. Start with Wikipedia (that is on line encyclopedia) and google racism in the US.

-- What a true statement!!!!! Liberals are obviously just trouble makers. Conservatives don't see the presence of colored people around them and as a result, there's no need for things like civil rights, affirmative action, school segregation, social justices and so on, because those kind of social issues do not exist! NewsBusters: Rick Sanchez Complains Mockery Is 'Baseless,' Even As He Admits 'I'm Not Good with the Metric System'

Sanchez is a white American with a Spanish last name.

There are already lots of "people of color" on TV news, if not currently in the narrow category of evening cable anchor. I see no advantage in hiring more just for their skin color.

Stewart is very funny and talented. We could use more like him.

Jews clearly run the American media and have for generations. What a disgrace that people can be fired simply for pointing this out.

Peace.

Not only was Sanchez right about the lack of racial diversity, I think he was ridiculed by Jon Stewart, et al, for not being one of those hyperverbal, excessively articulate, neurotic talking head types. They are not only all white males, but they all have an ivy league, hyperarticulate lack of accessibility one associates with Northeastern Jewish media.

Sanchez was attacked by those like Jon Stewart for not sounding like one of them, not just for being Hispanic.

Unfortunately, Sanchez was one of the few news anchors outside of Fox News channel who was fresh, casually intelligent, accessible and frank-speaking.

The summary firing of Sanchez only proves that he was absolutely right--before his recantation. So long as one cannot speak the truth about Jewish dominance (evident in the Israeli policy), the first amendment is a farce.

As the Sanchez case demonstrates.

Rick Sanchez should never have been fired for expressing his opinion. As the above article states, "He's right." Enough said.

First of all, Hispanic is an ethnic group by language composed by persons of all races. So it is nonsense to refer to them as “non-pale”. In fact, the Jews also have people of many races with pale and not so pale complexions.

Now, CNN firing of Sanchez was a big blunder. Not only was he expressing his personal opinions, to which he is entitled by the Constitution, but he did it in a radio program totally unrelated to CNN. Moreover, it is “Vox Populi” that what he said about the media being dominated by Jews is widely known to be true throughout America and the rest of the world. And the same goes for the financial institutions. But, why do the Jews get so excited about it? It is not an insult, but a reality. To make matters worse, CNN has now created a program to try to glorify Spitzer, a sex predator that destroyed the life of his wife and the rest of his family by hiring prostitutes throughout the States to satisfy his oversexed cravings. CNN is hitting rock bottom.
