Sarah Palin's 'snuff film' has animal rights group angry

By Melissa Bell

Is this the face of a killer?

Though viewers are falling faster than bludgeoned halibuts (the show's ratings dropped by 40 percent to 3 million for Sunday's show), "Sarah Palin's Alaska" still has more than enough viewers to stir up controversy. Animal rights activists are up in arms over Palin's treatment of a halibut in the latest episode.

In Defense of Animals has called the footage of Palin clubbing a halibut to death a "snuff film." Alaska fisherman groups beg to differ, saying it's actually a humane technique to put down the large fish, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The former vice presidential nominee took to the seas with her daughter Bristol (off from a night of dancing, I presume), where she tells the camera, "stunning the halibut may seem a bit harsh to some, but it's the safest and most humane way to harvest these massive fish."

Update: The full statement from the group is, "Sarah Palin's complete lack of compassion as demonstrated in this snuff video is disgusting. Most disturbing is the way she seems to enjoy causing suffering to other beings. When they laugh about the beating heart that Bristol holds in her hand, their complete insensitivity to the animal kingdom becomes clear. We tremble at the thought of her holding influence over the lives of others."

A reader comment from FishinFool: "As a commercial halibut fisherman in southeast Alaska, I have personally clubbed thousands of halibut. I can tell you that is the only way to do it. A good size halibut can break your boat, your legs and your neck if you don't stun them. It is far more humane than letting them gasp to death on deck. After stunning, a slice to the gills bleeds them out in a hurry. Bleeding them is why they taste so good. Unless you are a vegetarian, you can't really say much about the killing of your food. It's a fact that things die so you can eat."

They kill the animals we eat? OMG!

I'm freezing 30 pounds of deer today.
Chili, ribs, backstrap slow cooked...yummmm.

Take a ride outside the beltway, outside your "food deserts" and get off the clueless bus.

Really Bell? If this is the biggest item you can think of to write about, Get a Life!!! Better yet, quit your job become a halibut fisherman and see how fast it would take you to pick up that club yourself. If anyone else but Sarah Palin was doing this it would never make the news but now EVERYBODY is so shocked and disgusted that a fish was clubbed. Would it be better to let it die slowly of suffocation while it layed on the deck?

people in alaska wipe their own butts, but we don't need to see that on television. so why do we need to see sarah killing a fish?

Unless you are a vegetarian like I am, no meat/fish/bird eater has a right to complain about Sarah Palin's fishing and hunting activities.

She sure does like killing animals, no doubt about that.

I've fished halibut and never had to bludgeon them with a club. In fact hitting the fish bruises the meat and any chef will tell you that bruised meat is not as tasty as non-bruised meat. Shameful action by inbred rednecks is what Sarah Palin represents. I am sick of her but I'm more sick that my home town paper reports on her every move. Not a day goes by without Sarah Palin news in WAPO.

Thanks for putting in the last option!!

It makes sense that stunning is more humane than just slicing right in.

I wouldn't have had a problem with that... but AFV is increasingly becoming cruel to bugs and frogs and fish! Cute babies eating creatures isn't funny!

Posted by: louiskjarvis | November 24, 2010 1:44 PM | Report abuse

This is really funny!

In 2008, Palin was filmed in a scene for a Thanksgiving Day Special in Alaska pardoning a turkey while another was being slaughtered in the background.

Now, she is drawing attention again and the ire of animal right activists and others in her new show on TLC clubbing a Halibut to death.

Posted by: Citi__Street | November 24, 2010 1:48 PM | Report abuse

Usually when a Halibut hits your deck it starts slapping it's tail and a big enough one can damage a small boat or even hurt a passenger.

It's standard procedure to knock a fish on the head to put it out rather than let it gasp itself to death.

I used to fish but I am finding harder to directly take a wild animal's life but for every halibut that is caught you save the lives of thousands of other sea creatures, at least that used to be my rational.

For most of you, esp madest, nearly all large game fish must be put out when they are brought on board. If you have caught halibut, you have not pulled in a 80lb fish or better, which is 'small' in the gulf of alaska, ketchimak bay etc. They do not fight much but if you are standing over or near a large halibut on deck, and it kicks, you can certainly be hurt, knocked over or tossed in the water. You will find the same with large tuna, mackeral, even blue-fish and salmon. And not, it does not harm the meat. Typically you hit (or like most charter, shoot) them right on top of the head. You can still use the head for stock if you like. Some people called this stick the 'preacher... as for azumaguy, you are crazy. Why in the world can people who choose to eat meat not have an opinion about the ethical treatment of the animals they choose to eat or not eat? You must be in your teens and new to vegetarianism. Can only carnivores complain about the use of herbicides and pesticides on vegetable crops that taint our drinking water? If you are a vegetarian, and consume dairy or eggs, does that mean you cannot have an opinion about how the eggs were farmed or the condition of cattle that produce your milk? Give me a break, complete tosser... That said, Palin is an idiot and i am embarrassed that such a majority of our country votes for her, buys her book, watches her show or takes her seriously. For someone who is against "big media", how much "bigger media" can you get before dancing with the stars or hosting your own reality show? One big fat parody of ones own life and ethics.

Posted by: laughable | November 24, 2010 2:15 PM | Report abuse

Gee, that's how its done...and if you were paying attention, that's to protect the meat from being bruised. You club it on the head to stun it so it doesn't beat itself to death. I know it's hard for Hollywood likes and others who don't live in the real world, to understand how the fish actually get to their plate. That's what the show is all about. You're learning about Alaska and about how that fish you're eating is caught and processed. You probably don't like dogs pulling a sled either. But let me tell you, standing next to a dog team and seeing how excited and happy those dogs are is truly amazing. They love their work. Quit crying about being inhumane. It's makes us in Alaska laugh at the rest of the world for not being real.

Are you animal lovers serious? God forbid you might have to live off of the land someday. This whole concept of protecting LIVING (other than humans) THINGS is silly. Protect your fellow human being and stop there. We have dominion over the land and creatures. We of course must be good stewards of the things that have been entrusted to us. The earth will be okay, the animals will still be there even after we have used some of them. It is an amazing planet. It was designed with forethought and understanding that it is here to supply the HUMAN population. We eat fish and beef; one day, one person decided that it's not okay to eat them, get serious! Then the stupid humans create these organizations to protect animals.
It all comes down to you moronic evolutionists. Ooh, my relatives are being eaten! Get right with the fact that this was all created to sustain HUMAN life. Controlled life can not come from chaos, there is no chance on earth, or luck, superstition, etc...
I shall now go and throw up in my mouth, not just a little bit, but a lot as I have nothing but disdain for some of my fellow flesh bags. Oh, PETA also sucks.

Obviously no one in these 'animal rights groups' has ever been fishing. Clubbing a fish on the head is the most humane way to euthanize a fish after it has been caught. The alternative is leaving it on the deck of the boat to slowly suffocate, which seems somewhat less humaniarian to me.
As a liberal, I really dislike Palin's policies and strongly disagree with the largest majortiy her ideas on government, so I think my support of her here should hold some weight.
As an experienced sport fisherman, I can tell you what Palin did was not 'snuff', it was the generally accepted practice.
I would, however, like to take issue with the violent way farmers just PULL carrots out of the ground. That is completely unacceptable, and looks violent and probably disturbs children. Those vegetarians just don't care about the carrots' feelings.

Posted by: marshalw | November 24, 2010 2:31 PM | Report abuse

Sarah Palin's 'snuff film'? Bell, I just don't understand libel laws. A 'snuff film' is when a human being is murdered on film for entertainment. I bet you eat fish which someone catches and kills for you. Palin sometimes does that for herself. That makes Palin a fisherman, and you a lying hypocrite.

People who gather under the Republican banner give the impression that they are driven to kill whether it be by wars, global warming, medical care for those in need, or hunting. Bush called it conservative compassion.

I suspect she relished the opportunity of added attention, and probably anticipated the response for that part of the "film." Doesn't anyone realize that she doesn't do any of the outdoor or wilderness things she puts out to viewers? Or that Alaskans don't appreciate her expoitation of their State for $$$, or acting as if she's a "valued" member of their communities?

Posted by: Southsider | November 24, 2010 2:45 PM | Report abuse

1. It wasn't Ms. Bell's idea to call it a "snuff film" ... that was the animal right's group's term, as clearly stated in the article. Please read, people!

2. It isn't the *fact* of the killing that bothers people, it is the showing of it on prime-time TV, to viewers who maybe didn't know that was coming. Yes, many people like to eat meat without being confronted about the violence required to have it; I for one would be happier if everyone was forced to see this reality, but that's not the way things are right now, so we have to be careful about what we show and to whom.

The question is, is it appropriate to show this reality on *this* TV show, with its expected demographic and time slot? Maybe, maybe not, but don't confuse the issue with one of whether animals should be killed or not for food ... that's a WHOLE different debate!!

To start off the appropriate debate, I think it is WRONG to show the violent killing of an animal on a show like this. It is not expected or necessary, and the way things work now, society as a whole wants to protect potentially innocent viewers (children?) from being exposed to it in this context. A documentary about the fishing industry, a Discovery channel show about animal rights groups ... I don't know ... there are maybe lots of places where the viewer would reasonably expect to see something like this; but not on this particular show, at least without sufficient view discretion warning about violence.

These animal rights activists are all nuts. What's next? Are we going to have vegetable rights activists protesting the Food Network for showing some chef slicing a tomato? After all this tomato was alive and well prior to its being savagely picked from its life sustaining vine. The tomato could have been permitted to die a natural death on its own terms. Or is televising the slicing of the tomato fine but televising the picking of the tomato from the vine the savage part of the process? Liberalism is a sickness.

Posted by: tmonahan54 | November 24, 2010 2:49 PM | Report abuse

When it comes to animals, fish or fowl the question is why are you killing them. There are many hunters and fishermen who kill for the sheer joy of killing. They do not eat their kill nor give it to others for food. They ignore seasons and limits.

If one of God's creatures, large or small, is to be slaughtered for food, the question is how it is to be done. The answer is in a way that subjects the animal, fish, or fowl to the least amount of pain as possible.

In terms of showing death on TV, or killing, i think it is completely within reason to show this type of activity on television. Albeit, i have no idea what time this came on or what it even entailed. However, it is very relevant and important to make these types of activities available to the mainstream viewer. In this ages, it is critically important for people, especially the young, to understand that meat (and all food) come from somewhere, not just the store, clean and wrapped in plastic. Food brings with it consequences of nature and human activity, the same is true about showing oil spills, mine explosions, people starving in many areas of the world, hardships of life throughout. In this age, it is very easy to draw a disconnect between real life and the insulated life some people live, by choice or not. Seeing a fish getting thumped on the head really is not a barbaric act, it is what it is. You children should understand that life is a complex process and that in life, we see death. Please don't insulate your children from learning about hunting and gathering etc. It's not ok to glorify killing for sport or to make a mockery of killing animals but use the backbone you evolved to have, explain a few hard things to your kids and let them make decisions in their own life, based on their experiences, not yours (that goes for religion and politics 1000x).

As Palin was clubbing the fish, no doubt she wishes she could do that to the "liberals" and everyone else who opposes her.
Seriously, though -- let's be honest -- many humans kill animals for food, but most folks just don't want to see it and certainly don't want children to witness it. My husband grew up on a farm, and the family raised and killed chickens, pigs, etc. But not one of them took delight in it or saw it as sport. They never even took pictures of any deer that they killed for food.
However, Palin seems to think it should be a spectator sport and fun. That is indicative of something being amiss in her psyche.

It's disturbing that some people find killing other living creatures fun? If you must eat meat, fine, an animal, fish or bird has to die. But please don't give me that enjoying the outdoors nonsense. You can do that without killing anything. People who enjoy killing the creatures that share our earth are suspect.

For the few years that I lived in AK I fished a lot. It's SOP to beat a halibut or salmon when you land it. It's not pretty, but I enjoy eating fish and not breaking any fingers from them flopping all over the place. I'd hunt too, if I knew how. Eating animals involves killing them, even if all you ever see is the hamburger in your local grocery store.

Posted by: HappyArmyWife | November 24, 2010 4:22 PM | Report abuse

One does hit a halibut that is flopping around in one's boat. It's better than letting it drown in air. Newsflash: a fish has to die before we eat it.

That said, the clip of Palin cluelessly relishing the turkey carnage comes to mind at this moment.

I get the feeling that if Palin would have just caught the fish and let it die a slow death, as opposed to beating it's head to death with a club like a cave woman, then the Animal Right's Group would have been OK with that.

About 4 Billion live in agrarian communities living off live stock and growing their own food. Then there are about 10 million freaks who live as vegetarians and complain about everything on earth, and swear they are the educated elite. The rest of us go grocery shopping and buy slaughtered meat every day without a care in the world!

I loved Sarah's show and learned some new survival skills which most of the world's population lives by!

Shut up elites you don't have a clue!

Why would Obama have to use a dead mans SS card unless he really doesnt qualify as being an American citizen, born in the USA. Is it possible?

Hope after the holiday season the Wash. Post will start to publish on the internet some news worthy info. Is it possible?

I'm elite and proud of it - not a neanderthal with no empathy or sympathy for other living beings. I understand animals must be killed to be food - it's the GLEE and SENSE OF FUN with which Palin bloodies her hands - that makes me sick. She certainly doesn't need to kill and sell a halibut to pay the bills so why is she doing it?. Just for fun. Or to show-off. She's merely a pretty-faced bullie. And why does this have to be shown on TV??? Certainly there are more uplifting activities that can be shown to educate and inspire the American public!! Put her out to pasture somewhere in the Yukon - for good.

sarah's shows are great....Alaska has gotta be our most beautiful and pristine state. Thanks to Sarah for bringing it to us....love that halibut ! Wonder how the animal rights folks would dispatch a Halibut?...lethal injection?

Should TLC have shown the clubbing?
Yes, it's a show about Alaska. They do this in Alaska.

They fight dogs in Virginia.

How'd that work our for Mike Vick.

She made the animal rights activist mad. She should do that more often. That's the best way in the world to get my admiration.

You forgot Barbara Bush. Maybe Mrs. B. didn't do a very good job of raising her boys, but she didn't deserve Queen Sarah's wrath.
Keep it up and the only people who will support Palin will be those on the Sex Offender Registry.

These protestors are no doubt liberals and therefore advocates for human abortions. Would they get pissed if someone showed an abortion of TV? Yes, but just because they don't want people to know what happens during that procedure.

Reminds me of that anti-human life guy at the Discovery building complaining about pregnancy shows. Can't these crazies be content with Animal Planet?

I can't believe there are so many people that can't feel any compassion to another living beings and only care about their own gluttony. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated -Mahatma Gandhi. Sarah Palin is such a selfish woman, who lives only to please her own senses, no matter who she has to kill or destroy in order to obtain what she wants. She would easily be an Adolf Hitler if she was in charge of a nation, if that would give her more wealth and pleasure. Shame on people who are just like her. It's disgusting.

yeah, it's like clubbing a baby seal for your breakfast sandwich meat. i personally luv taking a few wacks with my aluminum louisville slugger softball bat before i eat a little flesh. gotta watch out not to splatter a little blood in your eyes, but it is so tasty.

btw, why do all you people object if i want to hunt elephants with my bazooka. it is my right and it is humane because i and other bazooka owners say so. if you hit 'em just right, they blow up real good. and so delicious to eat. yummy.

Palin's Alaska show had a huge audience the first night--------only 1/2 of those tuned in for the next show. They saw how dumb the show really is....the first time if was for curiosity.

Fish, or no fish, the show does show how little class Palin has and how she cares for no one but herself. Period!

I read this comment: I've fished halibut and never had to bludgeon them with a club. In fact hitting the fish bruises the meat and any chef will tell you that bruised meat is not as tasty as non-bruised meat. Shameful action by inbred rednecks is what Sarah Palin represents.

annroc writes: Very well said: the less you handle any "harvest; be that a fruit harvest or a fish harvest; the better...!

The best way to harvest Fish and Shellfish

a. get an ice making machine and fill the bottom of your hull where you store fish with "about 5 feet of ice shavings...then

when you catch your Fish: you throw the Fish right down ontop of the Ice shavings and ice blocks; when the Fish hits the Ice

the Fish immediately freezes; rendering the Fish immobile and the fish is frozen perfectly until ready to be processed...

gee with all the ice up @ alaska; funny I from conn. should be suggesting to Alaskans how to use Ice to instantly freeze living fish; shovel ice on top of the fish after you throw to storage hull

ps Sara Palin gives Alaska A BAADD NAME!imo

Palin calling to the fore that the Bushes are elitists and that they and others of their stripe seek to control the Republican Party is the equivalent of announcing that day follows night. Palin may have inadvertently done the country a service by pointing out the Republican Party doesn't have, never had and never will have the interests of anyone but the elite at heart. The fact that many who this elite wouldn't let in the front door have supported the Republican party for so long and so strongly defies logic and may be coming to a head. The Republican party has traditionally blocked any benefit from the have nots and now that this group is growing by leaps and bounds perhaps the Republicans will appear in a more clear light that will not appeal to many of their past supporters. The net result may well leave them in the same flaccid position as the Democrats where the party of FDR represents little but the triangulating that results in so such confusion that no one can say what they represent. The image arises of two headless serpents locked in deadly struggle over the remains of the public purse. Free no log-in editorial cartoons on this and more http://www.saintpeteriii.com

She had to club them because the fishermen convinced her that shooting them probably wouldn't be best for the boat's buoyancy.

ok right wing nutties, we all know that humans don't eat living things but do you really believe that Palin hunts for her own food every day. She hasn't done most of the stuff on the show because she is always asking questions like, can I bring my phone, do we start here, how far is it?? We all know what she is thankful for today, Republicans who keep giving her money for nothing.

Posted by: rj2008 | November 25, 2010 10:02 AM | Report abuse

As a left wing Democrat I don't really like most of what Sarah Palin says or does. However, clubbing a fish to death is far more humane than letting it die a slow death flopping around in a boat.
Ms. Palin is also being criticized for accidentally referring to North Korea as our ally. Clearly just a slip of the tongue.
She can expect to be subject to an intense campaign against her by the leaders of the Republican Party. They want the presidential nomination to go to one of their own and not to an "outsider" like Palin. In the contest for the GOP nomination for President it is going to be Palin against the rest of the GOP. The GOP fears that Ms. Palin is unelectable. I hope they are right. However, if I were the Democrats I would fear her as the GOP nominee. She may be the Queen of malaprops but she clearly knows what to say to get the support of the large group of ignorant voters who will elect the next President. Its about time we had a dumb a** as President. We haven't been doing well under the guys and dolls from Yale and Harvard.

When it comes to killing a fish, ending its life immediately is the most humane way to do it. Fish can gasp for over an hour before they die. Ending its life immediately is far more humane.

I am not a defender of Sarah Palin as I find her to be very distasteful on tons of other issues. I didn't see this episode, but if they were laughing at the fish, than that it incredibly distasteful. Not to mention her shooting wolves from a plane which is a crime against nature.

I don't defend Sarah Palin at all, but if you do eat fish, than this is the best way to kill them.

i disagree with palin as much as the next reasonable person, but really now? is this what they're making a stink about? fish?

Ms. Palin has been consistent in her disrespect and lack of care for the best interest of others. This is just the latest example. It began with her insistence that she was/is a good candidate for Vice President and would be a good President should the situation arise, pointing to such things as being able to see Russia from her house as experience with foreign relations. If Ms. Palin had had the best interests of our country at heart, she would not have accepted the offer to run and would have instead spent years gaining the education and experience she clearly lacks so that she could actually become a good candidate for leading our country. She continues to put herself and her own interests ahead of what is truly best for others. That poor living being received from Ms. Palin the same lack of care that our country has received from her.

The problem is not killing wild animals for food. It is the zest that this dumb animal, Palin, brings to her show. (And as a Western raised in the Rockies, I doubt there is much "reality" in Palin's show--no one who really gets out of doors is not going to have her lipstick that straight and her hair that coifed. This is like most "reality TV": totally unreal.)

Posted by: orray | November 25, 2010 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Instead of trying for a political office, she can start a butcher shop. I don't know how many non-vegetarians can stand killing the animal infront of their eyes.
Remember, couple of years back, she was giving an interview, while a guy was killing turkeys in the background? She had the proud look...can you stomach it..I can.
She is a piece of work.

There's something seriously wrong with this woman! She gets off on killing animals, that's for sure. Every chance she gets she's out there killing animals, or encouraging others to kill animals. And getting herself photographed doing it. That's sick. Normal people don't do that.

Someone who gets pleasure from killing animals should never be allowed to run for any office. Someone who enjoys killing animals shouldn't have children either. Look what a mess her family is.

I guess men like her because she's attractive. Imagine someone old and wrinkly and gray, doing what she does. You'd have a lot more complaints!

Time to stop showing this woman killing animals, or doing anything for that matter. She's disgusting.

Sarah appears to show pleasure while beating the Halibut and I guess her expression was the same while gunning down wolves from the helicopter. I don't think I'd ever want her in a position higher than a hunter/gatherer.
