Where should the president's turkeys go?
Update, November 24, 11:29 a.m.
The President has now pardoned "Apple" the turkey, and his sidekick "Cider."
In one of the more peculiar American traditions (and we have a lot of peculiar traditions to chose from), every year the president pardons a turkey for Thanksgiving. The custom reportedly began when John F. Kennedy commuted a bird's life sentence; presidents have been pardoning one lucky fowl a year ever since.
Five years ago, Disneyland decided to invite the bird to the Happiest Place on Earth to be a celebrity guest in the Thanksgiving Day parade. But sadly, Disney folks say that the invite was supposed to be a one-time occasion (even though it ended up being a five-time occasion!), and they have revoked the invite. The turkey may get his life, but he won't get to ride a float.
President Obama says the turkey will travel instead to Mount Vernon to live out its life among the livestock at George Washington's old farm.
While a visit to Mount Vernon is nice (even if it doesn't have the Pirates of the Caribbean ride), we thought the turkeys ought to see a little of the world before settling into an agrarian life. So BlogPost's digital wizard Wilson Andrews sent a turkey on a boat ride across the Delaware.
The creative juices have started flowing. A few favorites so far:
