Dorwan Stoddard: Arizona shooting victim, husband, church leader

Dorwan Stoddard, 76, died shielding his wife from the barrage of bullets. Mavanell "Mavy" Stoddard, 75, was shot in the leg several times but is expected to recover, friends said.

"He was a hero," said neighbor Marge Osterman.

Friends and church members knew well the Stoddards' love story: They were high school classmates in Tucson who moved away, married other people and made a life. When their spouses died, they moved back and reconnected. Both were leaders in their church benevolence ministry.

"They normally go out to breakfast every Saturday," said their pastor, the Rev. Mike Nowak. On this Saturday, Mavy told Nowak, she had wanted to tell their congresswoman that she was doing a good job.

I would just like to make a correction. In the churches of Christ evangelists are not referred to as "Reverend"! Brother Mike Nowak may be a passtor or elder, but never a Reverent. According to Psalms 111:9, "He sent redemption unto His people: He hath commanded His covenant for ever: holy and reverend [is] His NAME."

Such a courageous man who bravely sacrificed his own life for his spouse's. I'm sure he's in a better place now and has indeed gone to his reward.

Mr. Stoddard may your soul live on forever and cling to the presence of God.

Dorwin Stoddard gave his all to obey the Word of God as per Ephesians 5:25 in that he laid down his life to protect his wife and showed that he loved her more than life itself. What a loving husband and a great Christian he was. I believe that he's with his Lord and Savior in Heaven today. God bless him and his wife.
