Gabe Zimmerman: Arizona shooting victim, community outreach volunteer, and fiance

Gabriel Zimmerman, 30, was killed in the mass shooting at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords's Congress on the Corner event. Zimmerman, a former social worker, was Giffords's director of community outreach and the organizer of the meet-and-greet event.

The Wall Street Journal writes that his mother Emily Nottingham said, "He loved his job working as a congressional aide because it allowed him to be involved in developing social policy while giving direct assistance to those who needed help, such as veterans and people with mental illness."

Zimmerman was Giffords's point of contact for constituents in the district. It was a great fit: Zimmerman had a degree in social work, natural empathy and an extroverted personality, those who knew him said.

"He always cared what people had to say," said Jonathan Kalm, a freshman at Arizona State who had interned in the district office. When tea party activists held a protest there during the health-care debate, "Gabe was able to reason with them," Kalm said.

Zimmerman was a Tucson native. He had worked for Giffords since her first campaign in 2006. He was engaged to marry a nurse and was an avid runner, friends said.

Zimmerman had worked with Giffords since her first congressional race in 2006, the Arizona Daily Star reports, and his friends described him as having a natural talent at working with other people.

He received a bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a master's in social work from Arizona State University. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his father, Ross Zimmerman, step-mother Pam Golden, brother Ben Zimmerman, and fiancée Kelly O'Brien.

The Wall Street Journal reports that there are no plans yet for a funeral service.

TBD news editor Sommer Mathis tweeted:

Stunned to learn one of the dead was a friend from high school. Gabe Zimmerman. One of the nicest guys in the world. http://politi.co/frdHbZless than a minute ago via Tweetie for Mac

Those of you blaming Teabaggers, Republicans, etc for this tragedy just help to prove what loons you all are. This is not a story about someone being pushed to act, this is a simple story about how we do not adequately treat our mentally afflicted, and how once again our Government agencies can not handle even a simple job; that of not providing guns to crazy people. Whenever the Government tries to control any major aspect of our lives they tend to fail miserably. Why would we ever want them to run health care? They can't control the borders, they can't control nuts buying weapons, they can't control giving out free entitlements to those who are not entitled. It goes on and on. Guns don't kill people! People kill people! I don't own a gun but I fully support the right to carry and own guns, but for God's sake verify that you aren't selling them to loons. Also remember criminals usually steal their weapons, and they can kill with guns, knives, bats, and stones, and banning guns from law abiding "sane" people simply makes no sense. Within the next decade I'm sure I will need to arm my home for protection as I can see no one else is going to ensure my safety, it's up to each of us.

I didn't know you but I want to say good-bye. Thanks for all the good you did. It will live on.

Let's stop blaming others and work together. Lay all politics aside and have mercy.

Its very sad, but these are some of the prices we pay for our freedom. Its just very hard to protect 100% of the time with a free society... I feel such deep sorrow for these families and I feel ashamed that this kind of thing happens to our great Country. Where is this killers Parents? And what the heck happened in his home for him to be such a monster??
