Gifts to Obama: What the world gave the president (#obamagifts)
The job of president of the United States may not have all the perks in the world. You age faster than the regular human. You have 24-hour security detail for the rest of your life. Your every move draws the scrutiny of media hawks. And, oh yeah, that whole "weight of the free world" that's resting on your shoulders.
But there are some perks to the job -- 52 pages of perks in the last year alone, according to a document published by the State Department on Tuesday. The list recounts all of the gifts the president, the first family and members of the administration received from foreign dignitaries in 2010.
Chinese President Hu Jintao gave Obama a silk embroidered portrait of the first family.
Pope Benedict XVI gave the president a book on, well, Pope Benedict XVI.
Ojo Maduekwe, the minister of foreign affairs of Nigeria, gave Hillary Clinton a leather rug.
Over at the Hairpin, Liz Colville says that Obama does not get to keep the gifts. Most are put in the "Archives Foreign" or transferred to "General Services Administration." (Tangent: Imagine the treasure trove that must be in there if this tradition goes back to the 18th century! What kind of gifts did Abraham Lincoln get?)
Bloomberg correspondent Lizzie O'Leary thinks she found the best gift:
