Oprah's secret revealed; readers offer better revelations

By Melissa Bell
oprah's secret
(Evan Agostini)

Well, after a whole morning of wild anticipation, the big secret's been revealed: Oprah Winfrey has a half-sister. It turns out that when the talk show host was 9, her mother gave up a child for adoption. Forty-eight years later, the two sisters were finally reunited in November and promptly recorded for Oprah's last season.

As Lisa de Moraes writes with absolutely no cynicism whatsoever:

So, on today's show, you're going to see Oprah and her Newly-In-November-Discovered Half-Sister Patricia sit down with their mother, Vernita Lee, so Oprah can ask Lee how she feels about being reunited with Patricia. Which does NOT, in case you were thinking, qualify as being "exploited by the media." Because it's Oprah.

While it's quite lovely to have a sister, the secret is a bit of a letdown. I was hoping she was going to announce her three children that she had studiously kept out of the spotlight by sending them all to finishing schools in Sweden. Or perhaps she would admit to finally making an honest man out of Stedman Graham.

What do you think? Is the secret a letdown? What should have Oprah announced?

Let us know what you think Oprah should have revealed.

How many half-sisters named Patricia does Oprah have?

This People magazine article from 2007 titled, "Oprah Winfrey: I Was 'Devastated' by Relative's Betrayal" stated: "The February issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, has the theme, "My first" – and Winfrey writes about her first betrayal: A family member's revelation to the National Enquirer that Winfrey gave birth as a teen to a baby who died in the hospital weeks later.

Winfrey writes that the relative, whom she doesn't name but whom the Associated Press identifies as her half-sister, Patricia Lloyd, "sat in a room, told them the story of my hidden shame and left their offices $19,000 richer."

Obviously, Winfrey knew all about her half-sister in 2007, the only "revelation" she should be making is how it took her another four years to figure out how to use her again for more publicity.

Since your username is "flameworker321" I can only assume you're here to incite.

According to wikipedia:
"Winfrey's sister, Patricia Lloyd, died of causes related to cocaine addiction in February 2003, at age 43. Winfrey revealed on her talk show on January 24, 2011, that shortly before Thanksgiving 2010 she learned she has a half-sister, also named Patricia, who had been given up for adoption by their mother in 1963."

So, that would be two half-sisters named Patricia.

Do a little fact-checking before you decide to be a jerk.

Who cares?

Y-A-W-N.....!! I thought Oprah would say that she's got a kid. That would have brought her higher ratings.

How is what is actually Oprah's mother's secret, being 'credited' to Oprah? Oprah had nothing to do with Mom giving the girl up to be adopted by someone else. Seems like Oprah's mom needs to do the 'secret' confessing, not Oprah.

This kind of stuff happens every day. Poor unmarried mothers having a bunch of illegitmate kids-neglecting, abusing or getting rid of them. Mom adopted out a child to become known as Partricia. She and Oprah are the only ones that made it. Oprah is an exceptional success. Old mama still wanted to claim denial until the bitter end. O 1/2 sister seems decent. This is only news because it's Oprah.

I have sisters...
Does anyone really care what Oprah thinks or that she has a half sister? Honestly?
