GWU vs G'town in snowball epic
Tonight at 6 o'clock students from George Washington University and Georgetown University will meet halfway between their campuses for an epic snowball fight in Rose Park.
The two schools have had a friendly rivalry for quite a while. It's not really about sports. As far as I can tell, it's mostly about the similarity of their university names -- and how Georgetowners like to say that GW stands for "Georgetown Waitlist."
So, what better way for the school to prove itself than an old-fashion snowdown?
The guy behind the idea is Kyle J. Boyer, a senior political science major at George Washington who debated the idea with his friends on Twitter. They created a Facebook group and have been talking the fight up on Twitter.
"I guess the idea really goes back to election night 2008 when both Georgetown and GW students were outside of the White House," Boyer told me in an e-mail. "We originally wanted to just have a snowball fight near the White House, but then thought about secret service, and how that would be too long of a walk for Georgetown. The next logical thought was to just get Georgetown and GW students together for a little fight."
Originally, the fight was scheduled to start at 2 p.m. -- but the blizzard is still going so strong that even snowplows are waiting it out. Boyer pushed the start time to 6 p.m. in hopes that it will be safer for students once the snow stops.
Plus, he needed a few more hours to recruit Georgetown fighters.
"I know there will be GW students there, so hopefully Georgetown doesn't flop and not show up," he said.
So far more than 250 students have committed to the fight on Facebook, and both sides are pumping themselves up on Twitter and Facebook. Some of my favorites:
@CultClassiq wait. snowball fight against GWU??? #ohletsdoit you know they still madd they got deferred from gtown...
Lilian Thompson (GWU): I cannot wait for this bloodshed! Hey GU, watch your precious little faces! And btw, not all of us were interested in going to GU, you lose your soul at that place.
Michael Spaulding (Georgetown): HOYA SAXA! GW is going down!
@mattmfm I'm waiting for #gwu to cancel Thursday classes just as the Rose Park snowball fight begins to hear the epic roars from the crowd.
But, really, the snowball fight is all about fun, Boyer said: "I'll defend GW all day, but I definitely have a tremendous amount of respect for Georgetown, its campus, and its students."
Are you going to the fight? Tell me all about it on Twitter by using the hashtag #wpcollege. Then e-mail me your photos.
