U-Md. students react to Mote's retirement

Jenna Johnson

University of Maryland President C.D. (Dan) Mote announced to students on Monday that he will retire at the end of the summer. Mote has been president since 1998 and is credited with guiding the university higher in the rankings, attracting more top-notch students and increasing research funding, my colleague Dan de Vise reports.

The announcement came as a surprise to many student leaders.

"I was shocked," said senior Melissa Kallas, president of the event programming board. "He's been a driving force behind this university for years and I don't think that any student saw this coming.  He's helped the university weather the storm of a tough economy and I hope that the next president will be able to pick-up where Mote has left off. "

Student body president Steven M. Glickman said in a statement that while Mote did not always agree with students, he always listened to them.

"Many university presidents say they want to meet with each and every student. But President Mote actually backed it up - he offered every student the opportunity to go to lunch with him and then followed through by implementing policies that were based on student suggestions," Glickman said.

When news of Mote's retirement spread Monday, students and others swapped memories on Twitter and wondered aloud who would take his place. A sampling of the chatter:

@BuNNy3113 Ohh wow Mote really is leaving... Whos supposed to take care of us??

@azarbayejani Peace out Mote

@bmiltenberg UMD president mote must've had one hellua snowfest2010. Maybe the only guy who lived harder than us.

@Reina_Bella President Mote is cool by me. I went to the President's house once, they have the cutest dog.

@TiNZiEbaby Bye Mote. No more randomly seeing you walk around campus. Farewell.

@Maryland_Alumni Mote has led UMD into the top tier of US public univs and set it on a course to place it among the world's greatest univs #ThanksPresMote

@bogrosemary will this be good for the purple line? RT @UMDNews: University of Maryland President C.D. Mote to Retire Aug. 31.

@SaraMurray UMD Prez Dan Mote is retiring. He always said he wanted to go out on top. I'm surprised he didn't stay thru end of his fundraising campaign

@dshif Heres to Dan Mote. I cherish the memories:when I shook your hand multiple times, almost knocking you over, and discussing your dog with you.

Try working for him. I worked (and graduated) from UM for 36 years. During that time there were 4 presidents. Of all of them, it was Mote who treated the staff, and to some extent the faculty, with complete disdain and contempt. Good riddance!
