Ultimate intern #FollowFriday on Twitter

Jenna Johnson

Today's guest blogger is Kevin Loker, a rising junior at George Mason University, executive editor of Connect2Mason.com and a total Twitter addict. From his Twitter bio: "Caffeinated student. Web news ninja. Interactivity aficionado."

You've landed your internship in the nation's capital, but something is missing in your life: you don't have a clue who to follow on Twitter. You've got an account to see what's happening on the Interwebs, but sadly, after a quick search on Google, you couldn't find a list catered exactly to you.

Happy #FollowFriday.

Below are some accounts you might want to check out. Whether you do your Twitter surfing during work (bad intern!) or on your phone while catching the Metro (please don't run into me), consider this as a good starting point for who you should follow.

Follow them all on this list, or pick and choose from the descriptions below, provided for you, of course, in a proper 140 characters or less.

Going out on a budget

@FREEinDC -- Unpaid intern's dream. Tweeters tell them about free events & they retweet the info to you.

@gregslistdc -- This blog's Twitter bio sums it up: "Nowhere to go? Know where to go!" Obscure finds with this account.

@930clubDC -- Popular U Street concert venue. Tweets who's coming/sold out, great links & sometimes, free giveaways.

@TktAlt_DC -- Don't clutter your feed with tons of venues. This tix company tweets most DC concerts.

@GrouponDC -- Offers daily discount and deal coupons for cool things to do. You only get it if enough people join. Poke your friends.

Runners up: @brightestyoung & @dealsfordeeds & @DCPicks

Keeping up on government

@WestWingReport -- Play-by-play of the POTUS day in public events & sightings. So complete it feels like you're stalking him.

@SenateFloor -- Open govt project by @timtom that reports every single U.S. Senate vote.

@HouseFloor -- Same thing but for the House of Reps.

@USSupremeCourt -- Again, same thing but for the Supreme Court. Decisions are IN ALL CAPS, so you'll see them.

Runners Up: @CSPAN & @PressSec & @whitehouse

Transportation

@metroopensdoors -- Official metro news and latest train delays. Long name for RTs but usually more up-to-date than @wmata.

@unsuckdcmetro -- Train delays. Annoying riders. You get annoyed. Vent your anger, Metro love/hate with this account.

@DCCirculator -- Not too many followers, not too many tweets. But good to follow for knowing detours & route changes.

@DDOTDC -- DC's Dept. of Transportation uses this account for concerns & ?s. Got one about streetcars, maybe?

@BoltBus -- Wanna go to NYC? Follow for occasional sked updates & #bolting news.

Runner Up: @wmata

You Gotta Eat

@curbsidecupcake -- Follow if you like cupcakes -- & you like them showing up randomly in your neighborhood.

@districttaco -- Sometimes cupcakes won't do it. That's why there's a mobile taco stand with cheap tacos.

@dcslices -- Pizza is also cheap, esp from a mobile pizza kitchen. Click follow.

@busboysandpoets -- Not mobile but cool. Flagship restaurant & coffeehouse for discussion of social justice & peace.

For a full list of mobile food venues: @MobileCravings DC food trucks

What's happening

@postmetro -- Quality DC area coverage from @washingtonpost.

@Dcist_Updates -- Popular account for super popular District blog. Regularly updated tidbits. Blends news & entertainment.

@FoBoBlo -- News from Foggy Bottom. Perfect for those staying oat #GWU.

Runners-up: @ColumbiaHts & @thedowntownr & @thegeorgetownr
