That intern: The smoker intern

Jenna Johnson

Every intern class has so many personalities that they could fill a "Real World" cast. And every class has "That Intern" -- as in, "Don't be that intern." Each day I introduce you to one of those interns.

Every 30 minutes, the smoker intern ventures outside for some fresh air -- and to inhale at least two cigarettes. That intern has been addicted since high school and the stress of this internship is only making things worse. Long meetings necessitate chomping on nicotine gum.

Instead of becoming known for that awesome project or those long hours worked, that intern becomes known as, "Oh, is that the intern who is always on the front steps smoking?" The smoker intern often clashes with the non-smoking interns and staffers, who hate that the office near that intern's cubicle smells like an ashtray.

But that intern's three-pack-day habit can be a networking tool -- especially if the company CEO is also a smoker.

Want to help me stereotype over-worked, under-appreciated, misunderstood interns? Shoot me an e-mail.
