The doctor is in: Join us at 1 p.m. today for a chat about Four Loko

By Jenna Johnson

CampusOverload.jpgI have a special guest joining me on today's Campus Overload Live -- my weekly, Thursday afternoon online chat about all things college (both on-campus and off).

hawkins_1.pngDr. Kirsten B. Hawkins is the chief of adolescent medicine at Georgetown University Hospital and will be online starting at 1 p.m. to answer all of your questions about the dangers of student drinking and alcoholic energy drinks, such as Four Loko, which are being pulled from the market by federal officials.

But we don't have to just talk about Four Loko -- I also would love to answer your questions about college admissions (fyi, the University of Virginia is bringing back early action), bed bugs in the dorms and getting along with your parents over Thanksgiving break.

Oh, and next week I plan to blog about cooking a Thanksgiving feast in the dorms -- so, in preparation, I am cooking for some friends Saturday night using only my microwave. I would love some recipes and suggestions.

Send me your questions now!

Campus Overload is a daily must-read for all college students. Make sure to bookmark http://washingtonpost.com/campus-overload. You can also follow me on Twitter and fan Campus Overload on Facebook.

Kohl - earned a Persian prefix in 9th century.

Al-Kohl. Al-Kohl was to be the ideal solvent to help attain the philosophers stone 'gold'.

Alas we inherit Alcohol now as the modern word.

Having just given it up after 25 years of almost daily consumption ?

I thought I'd mix in that historical tidbit (I was actually just learning about early Persian history) and share an insight that hit me after reading this article.

As delusional as it was to think Al-Kohl could ever get you Gold which was what ? it was really about happiness through wealth?

I'd say it's equally as delusional to think Alcohol can bring you happiness.

All the benefits I read of alcohol are so far related to resveratrol in grapes and anti-oxidants in beer. Sure alcohol increases effectiveness of anti-oxidants ? but I read too much of anti-oxidants and you're damaging cells.

So, all in all ?

We would be a better society if we promoted more education on the ills of alcohol.

Oh, I still drink when dreaming. hmm -a NEW meaning for Dreaming while under the influence IN a dream.

I don't miss alcohol.

But when you do NOT have a decent education base on just where it will lead ? You might as well take up alchemy and seek the philosophers stone...

I used to rationalize the need for alcohol. "Oh, I don't drink that much" "Oh, it makes me more funny" - no, it ALWAYS ends up me yelling at the top of my lungs in the back yard eventually.

So, I said, do I want to DO THAT the rest of my life ? as you CLEARLY lose control with it ? Unless there are a lot of inherently bad drivers out there (for those that say it brings out your true nature, think about that, ARE we REALLY all bad drivers that have that revealed when drinking ? I think not) ? OR Do I want to HAVE a rest of my life.

I chose to have the rest of my life without alcohol.

Was fun, but I might as well have been dreaming, because no one else was in one the fun that wasn't drinking.

When associating feeling good with alcohol, the last thing I would ever listen to is someone rambling about why they stopped.

But - I figure I'll throw in my 2 cents here- maybe someone will also advance to Go - collect their $200 and realize, hmm - yes, if I drink and can't stop drinking, or discover I become addicted, or find that I need that drink to have things 'all okay' ? Ask where it will lead, oh, it WILL eventually bring some crisis to your life. EVENTUALLY. It was almost like a game to me - like an isometric exercise - to see if I could BEAT the beer - those 9% micro beers, you get a case ? Oh, you will get a call from your local police in the morning saying "Uh, hey Tim, you just made 193 calls to Pittsburgh National Bank complaining they took TARP money after they said they weren't in need of TARP, if you call again, we're going to press charges".

If alcohol can cause wrecks on the highway ?

I say it can cause wrecks on the information highway too !

We need to derive happiness through better means. Perhaps jobs

Yikes !

Have I just set precedent to put in place new laws ?

Instead of DUI's ?

BUI'S ? Blogging while under the influence ?

I once joked with someone - I should have a breathalizer on my keyboard- they laughed.

I was being serious !

Just PLEASE tell me Bush wasn't drinking when he got that Fox News TV Pilot series Shock and Awe on the air at the beginning of the illegal Iraqi occupation.

By the way Dr. Kirsten B. Hawkins...

Did you see the article here in the Washington Post some time ago about mercury in High Fructose Corn Syrup announced by four EPA Doctors (I found it surprising EPA HAD four doctors).

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/26/AR2009012601831.html

I used to quote the date at my supermarket when I'd be frustrated that there wasn't a SINGLE soda choice in the ENTER AISLE that didn't have HFCS.

President Obama prior to being President helped construct a bill that will make this illegal by 2012.

I noticed you are chief of adolescent medicine. I hope if you are not aware of this problem, to help steer kids clear of HFCS.

I couldn't help to notice over at the Medical school at University of Calgary Faculty of Medicine Department of physiology and biophysics- a video showing how mercury causes brain neuron degeneration.

I'm simply appalled that this would be allowed until 2012, and then ? same year EPA will ban the non stick coatings ? ALL of a sudden ? they're illegal.

Gee- why do we wait on these things ?

GOP in congress ? Anti-EPA for energy causing further risks that the EPA USED to protect us for ?

Anyway - it's scary this is legal now, but will be illegal next year.

I hope you promote the dangers and risks of HFCS to your adolescents you work with and your students who will work with more adolescents.

I studied at one point for curiosity the brominated vegetable oil in Mountain Dew- did you know it's BANNED in Japan and banned in India ? It's saying something when India bans Mountain Dew. High cancer rates. I recall a good friend / former professor of mine that ALWAYS had a mountain dew in hand, he just passed away from cancer.

Now - little billy must have ADHD, let's get him on some $500 a month ADHD drugs Eli Lily would LOVE to hand out.

Isn't it bizarre in the Patriot act ? tagged on at the end ? There is a clause ? saying "And no parents can sue Eli Lily for the use of the adolscent drug for schizophrenia called Zyprexa" it's RIGHT IN THERE.

I can't believe that Harvard doctor who was giving that drug out and later 2 years ago found guilty of taking in more than 1 million dollars for giving that drug out.

Our EPA and FDA is failing us.

Yet ? the FDA has the time to get involved in Four Loko - but not the mercury in HFCS, why that must be EPA.

Thank god it's not FEMA, because that means Homeland would be left to protect us !
LOL

Get it ?

Homeland ? Protect us ?

Meanwhile the kids get mercury into their systems and it's LEGAL ?

And who's protecting who ?
