Morning Reading List

e3e289b5-2e49-4b04-9af9-329062ef5737.jpg
Nick Wass--The Associated Press

Tarik asked yesterday what some of the factors are that could have led to the Capitals' recent skid. Key among the answers is the absence of secondary scoring and the ugly, gritty goals that are scored only when a player is willing to take a beating by standing in front of the opposing net.

Don't forget about today's online Q&A at 2 p.m. You can submit questions here.

Colleague Corey Masisak focuses on how the losing streak has impacted Bruce Boudreau and his coaching style.

Some NHLers and hockey folk may not like Alex Ovechkin's celebrations, but the Nashville Predators -- specifically Jason Arnott, J.P. Dumont and Dan Hamhuis -- aren't among them.

Ted Leonsis pointed to it on his blog, but in case you missed it check out this story from bizjournals that analyzes the performances of various professional sports teams and includes links to their combined-league rankings and also their NHL team rankings.

In case you wondered how one Capitals fan came up with the idea to bring 500 pacifiers to Verizon Center this weekend, Dan Steinberg has the story over at the D.C. Sports Bog.

Predators Cliff notes
While the Caps are trying to bounce back from their four-game losing streak, the Predators are clawing to stay in the Western Conference playoff race.

Capitals fans are far too familiar with the lengthy return process associated with concussions. After a 38 game absence, Predators center Scott Nichol is expected to return to the ice tonight against the Caps. Expect Ryan Jones to be scratched to make room for Nichol's return.

In the system
Andrew Joudrey has established himself as a dependable checking-line center and key penalty killer for the Bears this season.

GM Meetings
Here are a collection of links about topics of conversation at this edition of general manager meetings:

The NHLPA has proposed a rule on hits to the head. (The Globe and Mail)

Bob McKenzie talks to NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly about the players' prime concern of disciplining hits to the head.

NHL.com breaks down some of the key aspects of the fighting debate, but maintains that there is no real push to eliminate fighting from the league.

Although fighting has been a recent hot topic, Scott Burnside explains why the debate may never end.

They need to start a roll. From here on in they'll be playing teams, for the most part, trying to make the playoffs. They need to get that intensity back. Starting tonight. Go Caps! Thanks for all the great stuff this a.m.

Posted by: ridgely1 | March 10, 2009 6:03 AM | Report abuse

The playoffs have already started, even for our beloved Capitals. They only have a 9 point lead on Carolina and have 2 games left against them. If the Caps have a slump that lasts too long, coupled with losing to Carolina both times, Carolina can catch them. On the other hand, if the Caps recover, which they will begin tonight, and take the last two against Carolina as well, Carolina will not catch them. The Caps have a little room for error, not as win or your done as it was last year, but they also don't want to "back into" the playoffs and luckily glide in. If they do that it will be impossible to turn up the intensity for the playoffs. Turn it on now Caps! LET'S GO CAPS!!!!

Posted by: fanohock1 | March 10, 2009 8:18 AM | Report abuse

The Caps have created their own sense of urgency. I bet they'll use this crisis of sorts to spark a good run for the playoffs. They got complacent before it's too late to do something about it. BB will be preaching his system big time and the boys should respond well.

that's so awesome (the kid doing the OVI thingie).

@Boo from previous thread:
well, that's my point exactly... look what happened to OVI, and that was one girl only... think if it was many :p, maybe if Green limits himself to one...

Three teams from the SE are in the playoffs. Also, keep an eye on FLA in the race for the top of the division, they're 10 points back but with one less game played.

We need to end this slump tonight.

Is there any word on how Pothier's doing in Hershey?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | March 10, 2009 9:00 AM | Report abuse

@DrinkingPartner: He seemed okay Saturday - he's a -1 in the two games he's played, but the Monsters kind of killed them Sunday. The team said he looked "very comfortable" Saturday, and from what I heard on SportsJuice, he was very steady - Sunday may simply be playing a back-to-back.

Posted by: kittypawz | March 10, 2009 9:18 AM | Report abuse

@mauree: Agreed. The slump has to end tonight. Carolina is hot, and that Cole/Staal combination is dangerous. If we can break the slump and take our last two games with them, and win most of the others, they won't catch us. If we can't break the slump, and fast, and start playing playoff hockey now, they could.

Posted by: kittypawz | March 10, 2009 9:19 AM | Report abuse

Last thing we need to do is give Car or Fla hope. Getting away from home may help this team who knows. Sometimes it does.

No posts since 10:06? On a game day? INSANITY!!!!

Posted by: superpaqman | March 10, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

I can't believe that panic has gotten so out of hand on this blog that a few people suggested that Boudreau's job could be in jeopardy, with someone actually saying that he should be fired. Have these people gone insane? We could lose all the remaining games, as far as I am concerned, and Boudreau would still be a phenomenal coach.

He took the team to a level of competitiveness no one even dreamed of before. Instead of playing catch-up in the SE division, he by-passed it al together, putting us among the elite teams of the Conference and the League. Even if the season ends dismally, which it will not, I have complete confidence that sooner or later BB will get us to the Cup.

He is a genius of a coach and a big part of it is, unlike the rest of us, his ability not to lose perspective and give in to panic. The article about his reaction to the losing streak by Corey Masisak shows exactly this. He coaches the team by understanding and responding to what the players need at any given time rather than simply react to a loss or other situation. He is flexible, creative and, most importantly for a coach, attuned to his players' motivations and team dynamics. I have no doubt that he will find the way out of the current slump and other slumps to come. The fact that last time he lost 5 in the row was 5 years ago speaks for itself. We are so lucky to have him.

Posted by: caraveli | March 10, 2009 11:04 AM | Report abuse

I am hoping that being on the road might help our struggling Caps, maybe they have gotten too comfortable at home. My fingers are crossed...we CAN'T lose 5 in a row...this slump is allowing other teams to start catching up! The guys need to quit trying for the "highlight" goals and just take them when we can get them...ugly or not! Let's Go Caps!

Posted by: NatyBG | March 10, 2009 11:11 AM | Report abuse

Much agreed caraveli, if we didn't have BB we wouldn't be where we are...you know fighting for the top and all!

Just a little nugget I pulled from the comments on Kukla's Korner, on the artical about the pacifiers a particularly well spoken Pens fan wrote:

"[I]t’s about as relevant as the Valabik sack punching incident from a couple of months back."

I'll let you decide how to interpret that...

Posted by: superpaqman | March 10, 2009 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Bruce said, "You look at the personnel, and for some guys, it's not in their makeup." Simply put, he was referring to the obvious lack of "Heart" "Guts" "Balls" if you will, the vast majority of his players have. WELL, I DO DECLARE!! Puckguru's been saying that since day one ( And receiving a whole lot of flack for it, I may add ). He's said a zillion times that puck handling skills are great. But, without that desire, that willingness to stand up and be assertive, all of those "Pretty" ( To use Joe B's word )skills are for naught. That's certainly Eric Fehr's problem. No spunk. And, lord knows that's what ails Victor Kozlov. Just not hungry enough.
The reality however, is that NO AMOUNT of practice, no amount of harping on it is going to change one's character. AND, THAT'S WHAT WE'RE REALLY TALKING ABOUT HERE, C H A R A C T E R ------ or a lack thereof. You simply can't "Practice" character. You either have it, or you don't. And, THAT, sports fans, is the Caps' Achilles heel.
There's a guy named, George McPhee who so meticulously has assembled this cast of spineless, gutless "Skilled" players. He's the culprit. Yet, inexplicably he's managed not only to maintain his job for more than a decade, in most circles he's being hailed as some sort of "Dynasty builder." Oh, PLEASE!!! He acquired a bunch of high draft choices because he had FAILED as a GM. Now, he's assembled a crew of soft - bellied losers. Yet, the majority hail him for standing pat at the trade dead line, so as to insure having a "Good" team for years to come. If ever there were a "Loser's Mentality" THAT'S IT. "Just win us a few "Pretty" games, George. That's all we require" INCREDIBLE!
Caps's Management has become so emboldened by these idiot's behavior, they've instituted a policy of Blackmail --------- and most of you have gleefully accepted it. Because it's nothing short of BLACKMAIL to insist one buy a FULL Season Ticket Package, to be "Eligible" to buy playoff tickets.

Nice rant. Please tell us the team of your dreams in this years NHL? Who is it that has all the heart? Dont even say the Flyers, because as much heart as they show at times, their own fans and Bill Clement will tell you they are two good games, and one bad game.

So who is the squad we should be drooling over, and not have a chance against?

Posted by: SA-Town | March 10, 2009 11:36 AM | Report abuse

@puckguru:

If you were so knowledgeable, why aren't you a Coach or a GM in NHL? Yeah, uh-huh. It'd be nice for once, if your armchair coaching and general managing actually amounted to something.

To make the allegations that you make, you insult the players and their integrity. I doubt anyone goes into this sport or any professional sport, only to half-a$$ it or just collect a paycheck. For you to insinuate that, insults my intelligence and the players I support. No one is putting a gun to anyone's head to buy a season pass, so if someone has a problem with the price of the pass, don't buy it. For you to complain is as bad as that delusional woman who had octuplets and is insisting that she can handle raising them along with her six previous children, when she's already on welfare and banking on her five minutes of fame.

Try taking your fiber before posting on here again. It might help you with your issues.

@puckguru: You are just like Cheef, you come here when the Caps are in a rough patch. First of all you sound like Don Cherry. He was trashing the Detroit Red Wings because Don Cherry claims they aren't tough either. He was saying that fans were leaving before games were over, games they were winning, because it was boring "pretty" hockey. It's true they aren't like the Flyers, but the Flyers aren't what the Caps aspire to emulate, they choose to emulate a champion. The Red Wings only have 1 guy that regularly goes to the net and that is Thomas Holmstrom, otherwise they are a skilled team that, oh yeah, is the most successful club for the last 10+ years. I am not saying we are up there organization wise with the Red Wings---almost, not yet, not until we win a Stanley Cup and then come out the following year and get to the top of the Conference again. I totally disagree that crashing the net can't be taught. You have to remember that even the biggest net crasher in the NHL was probably the go to stud goal scorer back before they went to Juniors. They had to alter their game to get to the AHL or NHL. They found out what would get them into an NHL sweater, and how to keep it on.

I totally agree, and was hoping for a player like Tkachuk to come to the Caps at the deadline, along with a playoff proven stay at home defenseman, but it didn't happen. Since BB told the 3rd and 4th lines that they need to bring the puck to the net we will see a lot of crashing and some ugly goals.

Our key players are European (except Green); one of them is notably not willing to bow and scrape to the North Americans. All NHL officials, as far as I know, are North American and this raises, for me, the question of bias, conscious or otherwise. With so many European players in the league, it strikes me we should also have more European representation in the officials. I think the players should insist on this. What do others think?

I was on the fence with Schultz.

I saw him (once again) back right into JT and give Cindy (BALLSLAPPER) Crosby an open net shot, because JT couldn;t get untangled from Gangly Jeff and his 'mainframe'.

Terrible.

Cost us the game.

again.

Posted by: WhyGo | March 10, 2009 3:36 PM | Report abuse

His job was to take one shooter and stop the pass, if possible. Once you reach a point where the guy HAS to shoot or pass, you stop backing up. Jeff slid right back into JT and bumped him hard, JT was unable to recover and left that pansy-ass Crosby a wide-open net. Made Cindy look real good.

I now do not support giving Schultz more than bottom 2 ice-time and pairing.

Basically, what The Caps, Flyers ( According to you ) and others are doing IS PIMPING YOU, SUCKER. Now, go swallow THAT!

oh "guru". i know you'll come back here to see my comments. do you really think calling me a sucker and telling me to swallow that would hurt me somehow? make me cry? thats pretty sad. it makes me laugh and want to respond to you even more so you will follow up and further prove your ignorance. its funny.

let me ask you a question. what's more idiotic, having season tickets and playoff tickets to your favorite team, or watching every game a team you hate plays and then commenting about them on a message board (only after they lose of course), using a name like "guru" and referring to yourself in the third person?

all i know is if i watched every dallas cowboys game and then went on one of their message boards all the time with a user name of "skinsguru" and complained about jerry jones and tony romo and how they charge lots of money for season tickets, etc, i'd feel pretty stupid and sad. and you know what, i would be...
