Huge Mess in Nashville
Somewhat lost in all of the draft weekend coverage was the ongoing saga in Nashville. Are the Preds about to be sold or aren't they? From the CP: A source close to Balsillie, the co-CEO of BlackBerry maker Research In Motion, said Saturday that nothing has changed in his bid...

Notes From Columbus
Here are a few odds and ends that didn't fit in my story for tomorrow's paper. *McPhee is convinced that by playing his draft plans close to the vest (when does he not?) that helped the Caps land Alzner. Here's what he said: "There was all this buzz in the...

And the Caps Select ...
Defenseman Karl Alzner of the Calgary Hitmen (WHL). Of the top-ranked players, he's supposed the closest to being able to contribute at the NHL level next season. It's going to be interesting to see where he ends up next season. The Caps are already very young on the blue line....

Caps PR Staff Honored
Washington's media relations staff -- Nate Ewell, Kurt Kehl, Paul Rovnak and Julie Petri -- have won the 2006-07 Dick Dillman Award as the NHL's best PR staff. (I hope I'm not forgetting anyone.) They are all true professionals and a pleasure to work with. "We're privileged to work with...

Draft Day Update
Now that I've gotten my credential and a bite to eat, it's time to get going. I haven't spoken to George McPhee yet, but according to Mike Vogel of www.washingtoncaps.com, trade talks are heating up. Something could be in the works, in fact. I've got some interviews to conduct (for...

Check Out Washington's New Jersey
Okay, so it was the leaked one after all. Check it out here. I'm not sure why the red one is being shown with the online story, because I'm pretty sure the white one is going to be in tomorrow's paper. At least that was the plan when I left...

A Small Nugget
I don't arrive in Columbus until early tomorrow morning, but I've got a little something to share. I'm told that over the past few hours George McPhee has been receiving quite a few phone calls from multiple teams interested in acquiring the No. 5 overall pick. Whether it's simply other...

Scratch Rivet Off the List
Defenseman Craig Rivet has resigned in San Jose, according to this RDS report. So I guess he's not coming to Washington after all. I've got the feeling a lot of other potential free agents who might have looked good in red, white and blue are going to start re-signing with...

TSN's Mock Draft
As many of you may know, I am buried in a couple of lengthy stories. But every once in a while I come up for air. And what do I do? I catch up on my hockey reading, of course. TSN's got the Caps talking center Sam Gagner with the...

Is This It?
If you look at the entry below, in the comments section, there is a link to what could be the Capitals' new red, white and blue jersey. I am currently working on a detailed story about everything that went into the new design. But I have not seen the finished...

Draft Day Could Be Wild
According to Eric Duhatschek of the Toronto Globe and Mail, this could be a memorable weekend. "There's certainly enough talk going," confirmed Carolina Hurricanes' general manager Jimmy Rutherford. "I would suspect there'll be deals at the draft - and teams are sitting there, with extra picks because of trades they'd...

Simmons: 'Buyer Beware'
This is the kind of stuff that causes NHL GMs to lose sleep at night. From Toronto Sun columnist Steve Simmons: In fact, a whopping majority of long-term, big money free-agent contracts signed after the NHL lockout have turned out to be gigantic wastes of money. If teams could do...
