Capitals Insider: April 6, 2008 - April 12, 2008

No Surgery for Thoresen

There's some positive news to report regarding injured Flyers forward Patrick Thoresen. I'm told that his injury is not as serious as originally thought, and that it's possble he'll play tomorrow....

Schultz: 'I'm Ready'

Defenseman Jeff Schultz practiced this morning and afterward said he'll be ready to play in Game 2 tomorrow, pending clearance from the team trainers. Coach Bruce Boudreau said Schultz will be a game time decision, but I'm willing to bet that he'll play. Also, we're waiting for an update on...

Thoresen Facing Possible Surgery

Philadelphia left wing Patrick Thoresen suffered a ruptured testicle in the third period of tonight's 5-4 Caps' victory when he was struck by Mike Green's power play slap shot. Thoresen went down and stayed down, effectively giving the Caps a two-man advantage. Green scored moments later as Thoresen writhed on...

Second Period Meltdown

Three goals in less than four minutes for the Flyers, who now lead 4-2. That could be the game unless Cristobal Huet returns to the form that helped him win nine straight starts and the Caps' big guns score a few in the third. One more thing: Did I mention...

First Period Obervations

Three observations from the first period, which ended tied 1-1. 1) Who knew Donald Brashear had goal-scorer hands? 2) So far, it's been every bit as physical as we thought it would be. 3) The Caps' defense absolutely must do a better job of clearing out the crease. Cristobal Huet...

It's Almost That Time

Think you're anxious? What about the 12 Capitals who will be making their NHL playoff debut tonight? That's right, there's a dozen of them, and that's not counting Coach Bruce Boudreau. "To me, we've been in the playoffs for a month and a half," Boudreau said moments ago, shrugging off...

Briere Hopes to Play

While the Capitals will likely get a couple of players back from injury in time for tonight's Game 1 matchup with Philadelpia, it looks like the Flyers will have high-scoring center Danny Briere in the lineup. He missed the final two games of the regular with a knee injury. But...

Morrisonn and Schultz Appear Good to Go

Everyone is present and accounted this morning at practice, including defensemen Shaone Morrisonn and Jeff Schultz. That would appear to be a sure sign that both will be in the lineup tomorrow for Game 1 against the Flyers. Update:Morrisonn said he'll play; Schultz said he's going to take the morning...

Morrisonn, Schultz Practicing

As expected, injured defensemen Shaone Morrisonn (upper body) and Jeff Schultz (undisclosed) are on the ice for this morning's practice and are participating fully. But GM George McPhee just told me that he doesn't want Morrisonn or Schultz in the lineup if they aren't 100-percent. So prospect Sami Lepisto is...

Lepisto Recalled (Updated)

I'm in Vorhees, N.J., for the Flyers' practice this morning. But I just got an update on what's happening at KCI. I'm told that injured defensemen Shaone Morrisonn (upper body) and Jeff Schultz (undisclosed) are not skating, and that prospect Sami Lepsito has been recalled. Update:DC Sports bogger Dan Steinberg...

Lightning Strikes Jackpot

Tampa Bay just won the NHL draft lottery and the right to select center Steven Stamkos, the best player in this summer's draft. From TSN: Stamkos scored 58 goals in 61 games with the OHL's Sarnia Sting this season. He also helped Canada win gold at the World Junior Championship....

Morrisonn Aiming For Game 1

Today's practice was extremely optional. But I can tell you that injured defensemen Shaone Morrisonn (upper body) and Jeff Schultz (undisclosed) did not skate. Both Morrisonn and Schultz were in the building today, though, and I managed to catch Morrisonn on the way out. He didn't say what was wrong...

Ottawa or Philadelphia?

The Caps' first-round opponent will be determined this afternoon in Philadelphia. If the Flyers beat the Pens at Wachovia Center, they'll earn the sixth seed and a matchup with the Southeast Division Caps (still sounds weird) later this week. If the Pens win, the Caps will host Ottawa (the team...
