Capitals Insider: July 6, 2008 - July 12, 2008

Development Camp Three Stars

With a scrimmage that came down to a shootout, Development Camp '08 just ended in front of a standing room only crowd at Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Over the past six days, several players stood out. Some for good reasons. Others, well, for not-so-good reasons. I took an informal poll of...

Caps Re-Sign Gordon

Center Boyd Gordon has signed a one-year contract worth $725,000. That's a little bit more than his qualifying offer. That leaves Shaone Morrisonn as the only player who has yet to re-sign. He is scheduled for arbitration on July 24....

Theodore Flashback: Stops Fan During Canadiens Practice

We media types at Kettler couldn't remember if the video of Jose Theodore stopping a fan who jumped on the ice during a 2006 practice in Montreal has been posted since he signed with the Capitals but here it is. Along with Theodore's great take on the incident. From the...

Joe-Zay Thee-O-Dore and Other Stuff (Update)

First things first. For the record, Jose Theodore pronounces his name Joe-Zay Thee-O-Dore. My first impression of the Caps' new goalie is that he's a confident, outgoing guy with a good sense of humor. Here are some of the highlights from his brief interview with reporters this afternoon at KCI....

My Opening Night Lineup; Fehr Update

While waiting for the Caps to introduce goalie Jose Theodore, I got to thinking about line combinations for next season. Based on last year's successful combos and conversations I've had with folks in the organization, here's what I came up with: Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov Laich-Fedorov-Semin Fleischmann-Nylander-Clark Brashear-Steckel-Bradley That would leave Gordon and...

Fedorov Deal Done; Update on Morrisonn

General Manager George McPhee just confirmed moments ago that Sergei Fedorov has agreed to terms on a one-year, $4 million contract. The contract still awaits Fedorov's signature, however. 'It's paperwork," McPhee said when asked about why the deal had not been announced. "We just have to do some administrative things."...

Caps Re-Sign Laich; Fedorov, too?

Forward Brooks Laich has avoided arbitration and re-signed with the Caps for three seasons. Laich will earn $1.7 million, $2.1 million and $2.4 million. Canada's TSN is reporting the Caps have also re-signed Segei Fedorov to a one-year, $4 million deal. The team has yet to confirm/acknowledge this move....

Kolzig: 'I'll use it as a motivating factor'

Got some morning reading for you. A colleague of mine, Damian Cristodero who covers the Lightning for the St. Pete Times, spoke to Olie Kolzig earlier this week. And Kolzig, as usual, had plenty say. Here's some of Damian's interview with the former Caps goalie: Asked about his contentious breakup...

Day Two; Fedorov Rumors (Update)

AOL Fanhouse has posted a quote from KHL President Alexander Medvedev's who says Sergei Fedorov is not joining the Kontinental Hockey League because he will resign with Washington today. Such a report is premature according to Captials officials, though, who said the team is still in negotiations with Fedorov, that...

Quality Time With Bruce Boudreau

Here's the marathon post you were all waiting for, beginning with Boudreau, who's really in his element during development camp. He reveling in the chance to be hands on and run the show with these young players. "They're fun," he said. "They're like sponges. They take it all in and...

First Practice Observations

Sorry for not getting this up sooner, trying to get a handle on stories for tomorrow. But here are some of my earliest observations. --Karl Alzner looks good and the thing that stood out the most is how polished he is. He's bigger than I remember him looking last year...
