Alex Ovechkin wearing no-contact jersey

By Katie Carrera

Alex Ovechkin took the ice for practice at KCI in a gold jersey, which typically signifies no contact. He is taking part in most of the drills, sometimes mirroring the first line. I'll have an update on his status once the players are off the ice.

Some other quick observations:
--Mathieu Perreault is not on the ice with the rest of the team and he just walked in to the Capitals' dressing room area with his nose bandaged and stuffed with gauze again. Matt Hendricks is also not skating but he worked out with the Capitals' strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish -- as did Matt Bradley (broken finger) -- prior to the scheduled practice at 10:30 a.m.

All other forwards, save Boyd Gordon (foot infection), are skating.

--All eight defensemen, including Tom Poti who recently missed time with a concussion and Tyler Sloan are taking part in practice.

Would be great to have an explanation of the significance of the all of the colors of practice jerseys. Now we know that gold = no contact.

I hope the great 8 recovers from whatever is bothering him. Something more to the slump than all of the factors previously mentioned, apparently.

How about dem Rooshins, eh, Cherry?

Posted by: adhardwick | January 6, 2011 11:11 AM | Report abuse

well that sucks! Get better soon Ovie...at least he has a couple of days before the next game.

Posted by: capscoach | January 6, 2011 11:12 AM | Report abuse

First of all...do you think that would work in a game if he wore the "no contact"...? lol

Secondly, is Semin wearing the "do not get involved" jersey (in games too)

Lastly, is that in Ovie's contract that he has to wear that jersey in NON "Optional" practices...or did Bruce bargin with him and say..."Ovie, you have to show up for a practice, how about I give you the non-contact jersey?"

KATIE:

NOTHING -- ABSOLUTELY NOTHING on last night's WJC Final Game which had Cody Eakin, Evengy Kuznetsov and Dmitri Orlov playing key parts.

Amazing!!!

Posted by: Political_Stratgst | January 6, 2011 11:15 AM | Report abuse

There is absolutely no coverage of last night's WJC Finals with the amazing Russian comeback:

- Cody Eakin was player of the game
- Kuznetsov set-up the GW by Tarasenko
- Orlov was a force on D

These 3 will be great Caps (soon)!!!

Posted by: Political_Stratgst | January 6, 2011 11:17 AM | Report abuse

@SoaringCaps

man...you have no clue as to what is wrong with the guy and yet you can't resist the temptation to jump to nasty conlcusions!

Ovie has gone to almost every optional practice this season. (morning skates don't count)

The guy has enough going wrong this season to blast him for...don't make stuffup to go along with it.

Posted by: capscoach | January 6, 2011 11:20 AM | Report abuse

Come on, people. Why do you think a big Russian pride guy like Ovie is wearing the GOLD jersey?

Posted by: koalatek | January 6, 2011 11:23 AM | Report abuse

@Caps Coach--- kidding about Ovie...just play along with the jokes...(and if morning skates don't count, why does the POST report on them)

@KOALATEK- YOU are RIGHT! Wow, good thinking, that one slipped my mind, but makes sense!

Seriously speaking (Caps Coach), if Ovie is hurting, maybe he should sit out a few weeks. It's obvious he isn't going to win any scoring trophies...get him some rest.

And when Ovie's out, maybe Semin will heat up again...?? He did last year...

Posted by: SoaringCaps | January 6, 2011 11:27 AM | Report abuse

Looks like a left wrist/arm injury. They're just gonna say "undisclosed upper body injury" though...

I concur koalatek.

Posted by: Blahblahblah73 | January 6, 2011 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Will people quit talking about Ovie not being on the ice for morning skates. If you didn't realize, Crosby was also not on for many of the Pens morning skates before games. He was in the trainers room(sometimes the video room), where Ovie probably often is.

Also, for optional practices, a lot of times guys do not skate but will lift weights instead. Just because they aren't skating doesn't mean they aren't working. There are plenty of things the guys can do off the ice to train for games.

Please stop with the idiocy. Your gold jersey speculation is completely wrong

If The Insider had read MP's second On Frozen Blog piece, she would know that he planned to have surgery to repair his broken nose this week... No need to be so dramatic about a bandaged entrance, sheesh.

from last thread:

@vermontcaps

Sure Carlson has only been playing superb consistently for a few weeks, but he has surpassed expectations more than Erskine! Everyone thought it would take him more time to develop the positional play he has shown lately, he is also playing against the toughest players on other teams (Erskine is not)

I am very pleased with Erskine, but the only reason he has surpased expectations so easily this season is b/c they were really low! He was terrible last season, so any good play by him is very noticeable...believe it or not, he has missed his man a few times this season as well!

Posted by: capscoach | January 6, 2011 11:54 AM | Report abuse

I think it has to also be remembered that, of all the Caps defensemen, Alzner and Carlson have faced the strongest competition while on the ice and their play has still been the best.

They have been, by far, the Caps best two defensemen so far this year.

Posted by: sgm3 | January 6, 2011 12:03 PM | Report abuse

I will accept either reason why Ovie is wearing the Gold jersey.

Because either way its a "NO CONTACT" jersey.

Either he is ailing or he is showing WJC National Pride. In the latter case its more appropriately called a "U CAN'T TOUCH DIS" jersey.

stop...

Haha knowing Ovie I wouldn't be surprised if he was wearing the GOLD jersey for the reasons some of you say - knowing his sense of humor. ALthough let's hope he's not banged up either. If he is wearing it to support his team that won the gold - more power to him. I'd do the same thing.

And for some of you BLASTING away at Katie for not having done anything related to the Caps prospects - get a clue. She wasn't up there covering it to produce a story. Being a journalist - I wouldn't be surprised if in the coming days they reach out and try to get the guys on the phone and do an article on their performances along with some reaction from McPhee as well.

And if the Post doesn't do it well shame on them but I think something should be done following up. Don't be so quick to jump down their throat. You don't know what's going on the sports meetings about stories going forward.

Haha and leave it to the Ruskies to get kicked off the plane last night for being so rowdy LMAO. Love it.

@capscoach

I don't think I'll ever get over last year, and I'm getting tired of convincing people of Erskine's worth. We had 11 dmen suit up for us last year, and only 3 of them had a better +/- rating than him.

The complaints last year were that he was too slow and he was often out of position because he tried to run people too often. I didn't see either of those things, but whatever.

The fights, hits, and blocked shots were all there so exactly how was he so "terrible" last year? Gotta run, have a good rest of the day.

Green has been good overall this year, but he has seemed a little off with his injuries and such. IMO, I think Alzner and Carlson have outplayed Green so far this season.

However, I still expect big things from Green. He is very important to the Caps and the Caps offense as Green leads so many rushes through the neutral zone.

Erskine will sometimes go out of his way to make a hit, instead of making the better decision to play positional. It cost us a goal in some game earlier this season. I still think the bottom pair should be Erskine + one of them though.

I just meant that Green has faced the top line of the opposing team as much, if not more, than the two kids. I think BB only started to roll them out fairly recently against the top line.

I think our defense as a whole could work on reducing their giveaways. Every single one of our d-men have more giveaways than takeaways..sort of an interesting stat.

I just don't think enough credit is being given to Green, and the changes he has made, to balance out his game. From offensively minded to two-way defender.

Canadians after the game:

"To come back once in this tournament is outstanding, but to do it when all the marbles are at stake and do it three times is terrific," Cameron said. "Hats off to them; they were deserving winners."

"You have to give them credit … that's a fighting team over there," defenseman Erik Gudbranson said. "That's a very good team on the other side. They never gave up."

At least they are better sports than say some of their countrymen represented on this site.

Posted by: richmondphil2

My comment was never made to slight Green. I agree completely with you that his change from an offensive defenseman to a two-way defeseneman deserves a lot of credit. It will show it's importance come playoff time when the Caps will not have any defensively challenged defensemen or defensive pairs.

I think Green is starting to get a better feel of when to pinch in the offensive zone and when not to. I think in the beginning of the season he was staying back too much. But it is all part of the process of learning to be a better all-around defenseman.

no...the word "eurotrash" is what set me off...I was not a fan of their behaviour either...but as I said...those phrases breed resentments, prejudices, and have caused major turmoil in the world...and if you want to laugh at me for over reacting over a simple phrase thats fine...because I have studies history, and all the horrific hatred and killing in the past started with simple phrases, generalizations, and a few prejudiced people who managed to spread their ideas and conceptions.

Posted by: PhilR | January 6, 2011 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Lot of comments weeks ago about Gabby not adjusting. Now that he has it is a good change? It's good that the Caps have learned to play team defense, but at what expense? Seems like they were a better team with a wide open offense. True they need to play a grittier game come playoff time, but I don't think either a high powered offense or a tight defense are going to win enough games. They need to crowd the net, or trade for a couple of players that will. Plenty of first shots, but not enough rebound pokes and not enough rebounds because the goalie, hot or not, can see everything coming his way.

Posted by: coastallp74 | January 6, 2011 1:39 PM | Report abuse

@coastallp74

right now they are having some good games where they get in front of the net and score, but the consistency is not there. What it comes down to is that they are winning again, and eventually all the pieces will come together. No need to peak now...they can wait unti April!

Posted by: capscoach | January 6, 2011 1:44 PM | Report abuse

@wendel2

It's too bad the Canadian squad was only comprised of talented players that severly lacked heart and courage. They definitely had the talent to win the WJC, but they were just lacking on the inside.

Enough of the ongoing torrent of BB-hate, please. I am getting very tired of some folks using every opportunity to clamor for the dismissal of the coach and/or GM regardless of the actual topic of the thread to which the comment is posted.

I say unto you: If you really want the Caps to succeed, by all means criticize, analyze, etc., but this Catonian approach of endlessly repeating a hockey-centric variation on Carthago delenda est--over and over and over again--borders on magical thinking: "If enough of us post it, in every thread, it will be so".

Um, no. To suggest that the coaching staff is neither aware of the problems on offense--nor working on ways to solve them--is laughable. To suggest that firing said coach will make said problems instantly go away is even more so.

Things have already gotten better than they were in the black days of mid-December...and they continue to do so. Have some faith that the Caps are--both individually and collectively--at least trying to do the right things.
