Alex Ovechkin's skates
After Team Russia's practice yesterday, Alex Ovechkin told reporters he had something cool in store for his Olympic footwear.
"I will have a twist of my own," he said when asked if his skates would be red, as Caps teammate Tomas Fleischmann had suggested. "It's a secret. You will see it for yourself."
Well, here they are, in all their yellow-laced, fire-breathing glory:

Sidney Crosby is gonna crap his pants when he sees this one...this does not follow "The Code." Like it or Lump it...

Ahh, Ovie. This is why we love you in DC. The greatest hockey player of our generation AND a sports personality only matched by Mohammad Ali was at his boxing peak!

I mean if he had red skates, he'd probably wear them for the caps.

Is that a sheep on the outside back part of the right skate?

two seasons ago at the world championships ovi wore skates with red blades.

This is why I love Ovi! <3

Cam Janssen?
I am bringing up this name so that we do not all forget...as the NHL perhaps expects we will. I will not let this rest. If Green and Ovi deserved their suspensions (Green did) then I will d#$@! well see a repeat offender get theirs as well - and more. If he does not then I am truly (and reluctantly) jumping on the conspiracy bandwagon.

G-SHOK -- No, I think that is how Ovie views Crosby - kinda like a characture

On Ovi putting sheep on his skate blade.
Well, the guy's last name was derived from the Russian word for sheep. So the name means little sheep or little lamb.
But that lamb is ram tough, so to speak.

"AND a sports personality only matched by Mohammad Ali was at his boxing peak!"
During his prime Ali was hated by more people than loved. Greatness is rarely recognized as it is taking place, but severely missed when it's gone.

Or could we dub Ovi's skates as sheepskates?
Appropriate for a guy who's name means little sheep.
Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 15, 2010 9:45 PM | Report abuse
the usual suspects (crosby, etc) will make a big deal out of these skates as they do about everything Alex does. But how cool would it be to see all players rom around the league pimping up their skate blades. Sorry Sid, it's going to happen just like Jumping into the boards after scoring a goal is slowly becoming the norm
Posted by: dlakjesad | February 15, 2010 9:50 PM | Report abuse
If they were flaming Maple Leaves on Crosby's skates it would be a non-issue.
I'm sure people will point out how he's showing his self centered true colors by drawing attention from his fellow teammates.

======
Thanks Shiba-fussa. At first, I wasn't sure whether the sheep logo was making a statement about Crosby or himself. But then I saw the big gap in the sheep's teeth and knew it was Ovi.

Blast Ovie! Am I actually going to root AGAINST you during the Olympic Tourney? There isn't a single Cap on the US team. Well, I guess Ron Wilson can count.
Ugh. We also have Orbit Gum on our roster.

Quite a line.

@MyPostIDisAfake
I must admit I'm not exactly excited about the US cast of characters either. Rooting for Orpik (who you call Orbit Gum) is like rooting for the bully who used to torment my kids or the kid who used to spread nasty gossip about my kids.

Kane/Stastny/Parise
Well, the American team is helped by children whose fathers came from else where. Parise's father is French Canadian (and, yes, the trailing "e" has an accent) while Stastny's father is from Slovakia (and whose family was the Slovakian equivalent of the Sutters of yesteryear who were the equivalent of the Staals nowadays.)

ya know - for someone sho could have just as easily fallen off the turnip (or borscht) truck - OV has a certain style about him that is quite 21st c. Strange. The Russkie who came in from the Cold to DC & Dressed with some elan. Gotta love the guy and gotta love the fact that he loves the game. Go Caps.

Personally, this is the one event I am not going to be rooting for the US in. They have a roster full of players I can't stand, while Russia, Sweden, and the Czech Republic have some of my favorite players. Not even a choice there.

My prediction: G: Canada S: Sverige B: Czeska

Rooting against your country is never ok. What is wrong with you people? I hope the finals are USA -vs- Russia (if that's possible) and the USA smokes them. I would love to see the Caps players do well when not playing USA.
GO USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I completely agree!! I love the Caps players, but this is your country here!!! You gotta back the US (while silently hoping your favorite players do well).

It could be a lamb on Ovies skates. Ovechkin means "Little lamb" in Russian.

Posted by: blaketus | February 16, 2010 2:08 PM | Report abuse
No offense, but for a country that voted for G Bush into office, how could you possibly justify rooting for Team USA? J/K. I don't think rooting for another country to win is reason to start deporting U.S. citizens. Still rooting for Team Russia. Best of luck though, Team USA. Hey Team Canada, s*ck it! =P
With utmost apologies to CapsFan75. =/ Sorry for the attitude towards Team Canada.

is it a conspiracy that the rink ISN'T olympic size? The Canadians claimed that renovating General Motors Place would cost too much, so they convinced the IOC to leave it as an NHL sized rink.
Question: Does the smaller rink have any effect on the more skilled players? Does it matter to the skill players? Some say yes, some say no. Ovie is great when he has room to get his legs moving but were the Canadians thinking they wanted to slow down the European teams?
I'd much rather see an open game, crisp beautiful passing rather than a typical NHL, dump and chase, grind it out in the corners, type of game.

i'd love to see what semin would put on his skates...
if you understand russian, you will get that.

No pulse? No fun? Don Cherry? From Pittsburgh? Whoops, I guess I just answered my own question.

Who said anything about deporting people?
It's your country. Rooting against it should feel wrong. I have a feeling when the time comes you will maybe find yourself rooting for your country.
I know you were joking about Bush but uhhh you are rooting for a team that put Putin in power. lol So you saying all that pretty much joked that you approve of Putin. WELL DONE.
I understand rooting for Russia over everyone else but USA FOR GOLD!!! I know how to be loyal luckily.
Milbury I think wants to have Crosby's first child. I think Mario has already claimed that though.
Did everyone see Crosby crying to the refs the fist couple minutes of the Olympics. How anyone can respect that guy is beyond me. Not a shocker a reject like Milbury likes him.

I don't want Team USA to lose (too badly). Let's just say, that I don't want them to beat Team Russia (at all). All's fair though when it comes to Team Canada. I want a hush to befall over Canada Hockey Place when they get served crow like they just experienced at the Jr. Worlds (?) in January. I want them to riot in the streets and whine and cry about the number of penalties that weren't called on the other team and how they were robbed. I want Crosby on television explaining how he and his team effed up and lost their opportunity to medal in this year's Olympics. Most of all, I just want people to remember it and just get that ill feeling in the pit of their stomach, thinking maybe it's not that big of a deal that Crosby got the Stanley Cup because he made Team Canada lay a big fat goose egg when it came to the Olympics. I'm not wishing for too much, am I?

Chocolate gold medal to Mike4169 for having the value of loyalty to his country. For the record, I do root for Team USA. When they're not playing Team Russia. When they do, I'll apologize profusely to the tv when Team USA gets pummeled by Team Russia. It'll be exhausting celebrating and apologizing in a matter of seconds, but if only to appease the loyalty police, so be it.
Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | February 17, 2010 11:45 AM | Report abuse
and I will rub it in your face when my country beats yours.

I could not agree more about team Canada though. USA will destroy them too just like the Russians!
USA USA
F Canada and F Russia (But good luck Ovy LOL)
If USA is out and it's Russia -vs- Canada I will be allllllllll about the Russians for sure.
