Semin won't travel to Boston; Hannan and Sloan both sick

By Katie Carrera

Scott Hannan and Tyler Sloan are the latest Capitals to succumb to the flu-like illness that has made its way around the locker room. Neither defenseman took part in practice at KCI this morning and Coach Bruce Boudreau said they are game-time decisions for tomorrow's game against the Bruins.

Boudreau said that Alexander Semin, who took shots by himself before practice began, will not travel to Boston. Semin could meet the team in Ottawa though, Boudreau added, if he is deemed ready by strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish following a workout at KCI on Saturday. The right wing played in New York this past Sunday but has not practiced with the team this week because of a lower-body injury, the nature of which was not disclosed by the Capitals.

Here are the Capitals' lines at practice:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Perreault-Fehr-A.Gordon
Chimera-Johansson-Beagle
Hendricks-Steckel-Bradley

With both Hannan and Sloan missing, D.J. King skated as a defenseman to round out the drills. The rest of the Capitals defensemen, Mike Green, Karl Alzner, John Carlson, John Erskine and Tom Poti were all on the ice.

* According to a team source, Michal Neuvirth will start in net against Boston on Saturday.

It was a lengthy practice for the Capitals on a travel day, as they were on the ice for over an hour, but the team and Boudreau were glad to have three days of full sessions on the ice this week perhaps for the first time perhaps since training camp.

"We covered all of the areas that we wanted to cover," Boudreau said. "Obviously as a coach it's like a teacher you never feel like there's enough coaching or enough teaching to be able to get done. But I think we've covered everything and hopefully now everybody that's going to be playing has at least done what we want them to do."

Said Karl Alzner: "When you don't get the chance to work on things and change things, especially when you're in a spiral going down it's very important to just get back to basics -- have a couple battle practices, a couple fun practices and just get guys confident and comfortable out there."

I'm working on a story for tomorrow's paper about the more defense-oriented style that the Capitals used against Anaheim on Wednesday so keep an eye out for that.

@RedLitYogi

While I will be satisfied with a good team this season that works hard, to say I don't care about the cUp is a little extreme. I want the cup, but I also accept that even with a great team, you still have to be kinda lucky to win it. So lets start playing solid games and hope we get lucky in the end.

Posted by: guer_j | December 17, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Man this bug is really starting to "bug" me! Once we get a few days off we should just have every player drink fro the same water bottle so they can all get sick and get over it...like a kids chicken poz party.

Semin...come on man, we need you! get healthy then get you A$$ on the plane and go meet your team!

Posted by: capscoach | December 17, 2010 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Looks like we'll see Fahey back again.

Hey @PhilR, saw your posts in the last thread against @sgm. Gotta say I'm mystified too by your suggestion that the Caps have "screwed over" Erskine. Ersk has greatly improved his game this year, has skated in all but two games this season, has been rewarded with time whenever he's shined, by my observation. And, just landed an appreciated and healthy 2 year deal from the org.

If you would slot Erskine higher among the pairings, so be it, but there's logic to where he is. So if sgm or I or anyone else here has a differing view from you that would be unsurprising.

But check that anger, man. It's a bit much for what should be some friendly banter here.

Posted by: Justafan | December 17, 2010 1:51 PM | Report abuse

BTW, I think the Erskine signing is the sort of thing that will help the team out of the funk. He's given his all this year, deserved to be rewarded, and was. That's a solid message to the team.

Posted by: Justafan | December 17, 2010 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Trade semin when he gets healthy.

I'm done waiting for him to show the skill he has over an entire (or most) season and in the entire playoffs.

Trade him now!

I didn't notice when Sasha got the lower boady injury.-hope he doesn't get the rep for being "soft". The team could use his scoring, that's for sure.

@jp14710

I'm not sure when Semin got hurt, but I'm guessing we may find out what happened in the next episode of 24/7.

Yeah, I sure hope it never gets to the point where people start thinking Semin is Soft.

does anyone know how long Matt Hendricks is signed for. wouldn't mind seeing him on our team for the next couple of years as well.

congrats to Ersk. he worked hard on his game and skating and it paid off on the ice and with a new contract!

Posted by: natresgroup | December 17, 2010 2:04 PM | Report abuse

Give Semin a breather. If he gets back to where he was in the first 20-some games we'll all benefit. He looked far from soft and even threw a punch or two. and played some f**kn awesome. 2-way 5-5, PK, and PP time.

(** sorry for the HBO reference).

From Previous thread

@ PhilR

"If ice time is given by on ice eprformance then Poti should be getting about 10 minutes per game while Erskine should be getting closer to 20 per contest."

Really you think Poti should get 10 minutes a game, WTF, he shouldn't even get that based on the game against the Ducks. He is soft !!!!!!!! He is on the same level as Esskay !!!!! Once Double Nickles is good to go Poti and Esskay can write reviews of the Concessions or even make wave files for Caps365.

@ natresgroup

I wish our team had Hendrick's & Erskine work ethic, maybe we wouldn't be in this slump :)

Posted by: bqts | December 17, 2010 2:11 PM | Report abuse

bqts,

Completely agree, I would much rather see him sharing hotdogs with Sloan than being on the ice. The guy is truly the weakest link of the d corp, I would almost rather see Fahey on the ice.

Posted by: PhilR | December 17, 2010 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Sorry to be negative, but 1.5M per year for Ersk is a gross over payment. Guys like him are a dime a dozen in July for 800K.

It's a bad contract.

Posted by: Steve_R | December 17, 2010 2:18 PM | Report abuse

@capscoach - I see your point, but I don't want this team to lose its identity. I like a team that plays attractive, creative hockey. I'd rather see 90+ games of that then see a negative team that wins the whole thing. That's a trade-off I'll take but that's just me...(And this team can't win anyway if it tries to do the Hanlon thing.)

Posted by: Steve_R | December 17, 2010 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Steve_R,

Is Poti worth the amount he got paid? I would rather have Ersk at 1.5 than Poti at 2.75 or whatever it was.

Posted by: PhilR | December 17, 2010 2:21 PM | Report abuse

@SteveR

I tend to agree with you. I definitely wouldnt have given him a raise to be our 6th/7th Dmen. My take on it is they either already dont even plan on offering Hannan a contract to stay or they plan on using Alzner in a trade package. Otherwise it really makes no sense. And I like the way Erskine has played this year a lot.

Posted by: ThePat | December 17, 2010 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Semin being out gives him lots of time to back his bags. As for his lower-body injury: my diagnosis is empty scrotum.

Posted by: McLobo | December 17, 2010 2:27 PM | Report abuse

Phil, both are overpaid, but Poti doesn't matter in a conversation about Erskine's salary. Ersk is at best a 6-7D, and that is not worth 1.5M per season.

Posted by: Steve_R | December 17, 2010 2:28 PM | Report abuse

King's out again!!! Freaking trade him already! It's frustrating knowing the Caps desperately need his toughness and heart every game, yet Fehr gets a sweater.

Here's hoping BB gets canned before the game so the new/temp coach can properly match up with the toughness of Boston. Wishful thinking, get the stitching kits ready, Henderson and Bradley are gonna need them! Hopefully it's just those and not a strecher.

Over close to 30 years including the fire sale, rebuild and even Cassidy I have NEBER been this frustrated.

Posted by: FLDave | December 17, 2010 2:28 PM | Report abuse

No Semin in Boston isnt what I wanted to see.

Hmm DJK dressing as a D man. Really? Why do I get the feeling that the next Caps Season Ticket Holder 1st Star of the Week package will include a one game contract to play D for the Washington Capitals.

Hmm, guess it's time to start thinking about my favorite Caps player and moment...off to brainstorm.

Steve_R: I had Erskine projected at $1.3M. I thought he would get a tiny raise whereas Poti took a cut. That said, the new Ersk deal is better value than the Poti extension.

Posted by: youaresquishy | December 17, 2010 3:15 PM | Report abuse

Stevo,

Reality is that Erskine is a 6-7 d-man at best. Go to capgeek and look at what other teams are paying for 5-7 d-men. 1.5m is too much. This isn't opinion, take a look at what other GM's are paying, that represents fair market value for somebody with Ersk's skill set, not 1.5M.

GMGM also overpaid Brads and Stecks. 1M for fourth liners isn't smart.

And might I add that I felt the earth tilt off its axis when sgm agreed with me.

The Bears had their teddy bear toss on Dec 4th, though the count wasn't nearly as high as the one for the Hitmen game. Officially the Bears collected 7,199 bears. We're not sure if that included the one that got caught in the netting behind the goal and hung there the rest of the game.

As far as Ersk's contract, it must be remembered he's getting UFA money. You can't compare him to the under-27s. Andy Sutton as a for instance got 2 yrs/$2.5M each as a D and the Ducks had him at LW the other night. Also, a 5/6 D gets more than a 4th line forward. Those are the guys who are really cheap. 5/6 D plays 15 mins while #4 winger gets maybe 10/game.

Short term pain for long term gain. A true fan is willing to watch our team drop a few meaningless games. Shameless is blindly supporting a failure of a coach, rather than dropping meaningless games to get a NHL level coach that can make use of our talent and win a Cup. BB has failed THREE seasons in a row. I can assure you this post season (yes the Caps will bounce back and make it) they will be owned once again by a lesser team just like the last three seasons.

We were promised a Cup when Leonsis bought the team. We now have the roster to make that happen if properly utilized and motivated. It will NEVER happen under Bruce 'Bird Call' Boudreau. Watch the HBO special on the winter classic. Compare our coach to the Pens, it is night and day...

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 17, 2010 5:02 PM | Report abuse

I also think the coach and GM should be a package here. Either they both go, or both stay. McPhee should not be allowed to hire another cpach at this point. If BB was gonna get fired, it should have happened after Montreal. Since McPhee didn't bring in ANY players this summer, I think Ted gave them both one more chance.

IMO, we are players away, not a coach. This lineup just doesn't have enough guys with experience. Playoff experience specifically. A star (Semin) should be used to bring in those missing pieces. If Semin is resigned, Green cannot be when his contract is over. Given the choice, I take Green.

Other than Kopitar and Doughty, pick two guys from the Kings. IMO, Semin (plus a little extra) could make that acquisition possible.

Posted by: underpants2 | December 17, 2010 5:08 PM | Report abuse

> We were promised a Cup when Leonsis bought the team.

Pfft. Nobody promised anybody a cup. Go back and read what he actually says, which makes a helluva lot more sense than most of the b.s. people are posting here, e.g.:

"I believe that if the Caps can qualify for the playoffs, 10 or 15 years in a row, and we have a really good team that's young and has upside, that with that continuity and that knocking on the door enough, that we'll get our fair share of Stanley Cups. That's what I believe and I have to believe.

"I promised the fan base we wouldn't create a team that would get to the Finals and then not make the playoffs, or make the playoffs barely then [not] make the playoffs the next year. That we'd be generationally great and would win the Cup. Well, I think we're on our way to having a really really good team. We got younger this offseason. The players who made the team that we think are better players than we had are younger, they're our prospects in goaltending and defense. That augers so well for our future.

"At the same time, we want to win today. I do think we're positioned very very well. We've managed the cap well. We have our bedrock players signed for the most part for long-term deals....The fan base has confidence, and it's just a matter of time, I believe, until we win the Cup."

You might as well trade him if you really believe that.

Totally off topic but did anyone here try to get tickets for the pre-Winter Classic almumni game? I have many friends who tried including one who had his entire 27 person class calling and online and no one I know got a single ticket. That includes my friends who are season ticket holders for both the Pens and Steelers. Has anyone gotten tickets, know anyone who did, or know if Tickemaster messed up and never really put them on sale?

My son was able to get on and get us 4 tickets. He wanted more but that was the maximum he could get.

OV isn't burdened by the "C". The "C" is burdened by OV.It should have been given to Laich. OV is a one trick pony who is highly overrated.Sure,he puts up the personal stats but he needs to be a more complete player. How could he possibly call a players-only meeting when he's not nearly the hardest worker on the team?

Leonsis absolutely promised that his intent for purchasing the Caps was to win a Cup within a certain period (I believe 5 years). I don't have time to dig up links, but I am pretty sure of this.

At this point the team was better off under thrifty Abe than Leonsis.

@chriscaps:

OK then:

You want GMGM gone? Not sure I agree, but I get it; you certainly have a right to your opinion.

You want BB gone? Again, we'll just have to agree to disagree, but so be it.

That said, I firmly believe that there is only one (1) situation where it is even remotely acceptable to root for your team to lose. That is if your team is doing so badly toward the end of the season that the outcome of the remaining game(s) directly impacts your team's position in the upcoming draft e.g., losing the game gets you the #1 draft pick, but winning it gets you bubkus.

But the Caps aren't doing anywhere near that badly, and would probably have to tank the whole rest of the season (God forbid) to have the #1 pick in the next draft. Besides, I believe the Caps first-round pick for next draft may have already been traded to another team (help me out here, tom?).

BOTTOM LINE: Rant for a coaching change and/or a management change all you like--I won't dispute whether it should happen or whether it is likely to happen. But please don't root for the Caps to lose...it's just wrong.

I will never understand why some of you people think so highly of Laich... WTF has he ever done??

Yeah he sounds good in front of a mic but he doesn't do half the things he always says they should all be doing.

@Thisistheyear. Glad someone got tickets. I know of over 35 people who tried and none of us got a single tickets. I refuse to pay what they are charging on stubhub. I guess I will have to find something else to do between the NCAA/AHL double headder on the 30th and the big game on the 1st.

@jp14710, sgm3, and others,

I'm not sure when Semin got hurt but I know that he had missed practice just before the St. Louis Blues game due to an undisclosed injury of some sort but had played anyhow.

Then he got sick but played last week in spite of it (in the disastrous, for him, game against the Avs) and the Rangers game. Someone reported that they saw him limping in the locker room and towards the team bus in the HBO special.

Bottom line: the guy has not been healthy for this entire month.

I noticed both Fehr and A. Gordon were practicing on the 2nd line with Perreault and Laich. So who will be the "healthy" scratch, Fehr or A. Gordon?

@sgm3:

Thanks for the link...

I found this bit particularly interesting:

"That Boudreau’s job should be in jeopardy as a result of the Capitals’ current slump is a laughable concept at this point in time.

His overall NHL coaching record is a staggeringly good 157-67-32. On a percentage basis, that’s Scotty Bowman territory. And to suggest that his success is all because Boudreau landed in the right place at the right time - replacing Glen Hanlon just as Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green and the rest were entering their NHL primes - is a false assumption as well."

And this is coming from a Canadian writier in a Canadian newspaper!!! Isn't Canadian hockey supposed to be the antithesis of the "soft euro style" that thet the Goats' Blood™ Drinkers decry in this board?

Flash. 8pts.(5g 3a) last 4 games. Do the caps even have 5 goals in their last 4 games? Wonder if all our players would play better under a different coach?

Posted by: Dizruption | December 17, 2010 6:27 PM | Report abuse

Yep we're a hockey town alright. I'm sure in Detroit they're talking of stripping Lidstrom's "C" because he lacks effort too. If OV's lacking effort I'd hate to see what you think the other players are lacking.

2yrs, 3million?? WHAT A BARGAIN! Good for #4 and the team, and all those who criticize this move, well...perhaps they should stick to watching college hockey.

"We were promised a Cup when Leonsis bought the team".

THAT was the number 1 problem I had with Ted when he bought the team. The next problem I have is he now owns the Bullets (sorry, they will never be Wizards with me).

Championships are not a Leonsis right, when he figures it out that they must be earned, it will mean we're closer to a goal then ever before.

One of the best bargains I've seen in professional sports in a long time. There are going to be fans that won't like Erskine because he's slower than Chimera, doesn't have a wrister like Semin or a slapshot like OV. Fact is he brings a physical presence to the backline like nobody's business. Forwards hate to play againt him. The guy is all heart and leaves it all on the ice every game.
