Semin, Gordon and Johansson not practicing for Caps

By Katie Carrera

Practice is underway at KCI as the Capitals work out the kinks that have developed over this six-game losing streak. Alexander Semin, Boyd Gordon and Marcus Johansson aren't on the ice this morning, while everyone else is-- including Mike Green, D.J. King, Tyler Sloan and Brian Fahey.

A team spokesman said Gordon will miss one to two weeks with an undisclosed injury, Semin is day-to-day and Johansson is out sick with flu-like symptoms.

Jeff Schultz also skated this morning with strength and conditioning coach Mark Nemish prior to the rest of the team taking to the ice for practice.

More to come.

Semin is out...just what we needed! Gordo and MaJo means stecks has to play and hendricks or laich has to take center. This bites!

@cstanton: from previous thread

I brought it up to give you something to b**ch over :)

special. He hasn't taken us to a "new" level, he's taken us back to where we were. Which is great. If he can't take us to the next level, then he can't take us to the next level.

But he has taken us to a new level for my generation! :) So I am allowed to be a little more patient than you.

It was never my intention to argue that you weren't allowed to be patient. Your initial question was why more of us didn't "respect" what BB has done here, and I was trying to offer some perspective on that.

I understand why you feel the way you do towards BB.

"while everyone else is-- including Mike Green, D.J. King, Tyler Sloan and Brian Fahey."

King IS healthy and on the ice as I read it.

Maybe with all the injuries and illnesses BB will be forced to give King a real chance to prove his worth? Naw, that would make the Caps tougher and oppenents wouldn't be able to beat them on the scoreboard and into the ice. BB is obviously not concerned about Bradley or Hendricks taking another beating. Watching a freaking sissy like Avery beat down Hendricks was brutal to witness...

@vermontcaps
No I was just saying all the hype I have heard about Boston's arena/atmosphere, I thought it was decent but nothing spectacular. Then again, they were only playing the Islanders and Sabres...so, who knows. And compared to the Caps Center/USAir Arena...Verizon is much much lounder and a lot more energetic (I too have been to games at both). The only other thing I have to say in comparison of The Gaaaden and The Phone Booth, is that a "red out" is far more impressive than a "black/yellow/white out".

@pkme
Glad to see someone else sticking up for Semin. People always trash him when he is doing well, move to trade him when he is playing great, etc etc. Some people just hate him and wont see what he truly does for the team. Others are just silly.

@jeets
Yeah, that is what he is thinking (especially being that he is a chronic Semin basher)...but its highly unlikely. Also, consider the source. =)

If MaJo is out as well a gordo, do we have to call someone up or do we put Laich or Hendricks at center?

With all these injuries/sickness, my guess is it will be a while before BB can get some line chemistry

Do you really think that BB hasn't lost this team and can actually find chemistry on the team other than between Esskay and the vendors ?

Posted by: bqts | December 14, 2010 11:53 AM | Report abuse

Really good article...very balanced about BB, the caps, and the slump.

http://insidehockey.com/?p=14260

my favorite part of course

Most importantly, the Capitals organization down through the AHL has utilized Boudreau’s system for years. Most of the players on the current roster were playing this system since their days in Hershey. So if trading Chris Clark last year shook the foundation of the locker room enough to precipitate a three-game losing streak, imagine the adjustment period for an entirely new scheme!

Still, the fact that they’re 4-9 in the last 13 games indicates that this is a situation to keep an eye on. If this continues into January and the team is barely in contention for the eighth seed, then it’ll be time to have a serious discussion

Replacing Boudreau mid-season should be the last resort for owner Ted Leonsis and GM George McPhee. It should only be used if it’s 100% clear that he’s lost the team and the only way to save the season is to bring someone new on board. We’re not quite there yet.

He found some pretty awesome chemistry last season! And when I reffered to chemistry I was thinking more along the lines of consistent lines...we will be forced to change up the lines now...sorry I can't be as gloomy as you.

@capscoach

I've achieved my goal on this site in raising the awareness and appreciation for #4. I would stop coming and posting, but now I'm somewhat addicted and the issue has become larger. I'm sorry if I offend or irritate folks like yourself w/my use of capital letters, but if they or you refuse to ingnore the message because of the messenger, well...that's not my fault and calls into question their motivations as fans.

I use the cap letters because, believe it or not, I really am screaming them as I type. Additionally, many posters here seem to need things spelled out for them, and by using caps they should be able to easily ascertain what my main points are. You should hear me converse w/my Bruins, Pens, and Flyers fans....WE'RE ALL THE SAME WAY!!

We talk about our hockey much the way we expect it to be played: loud, bold, and brash. I promise to do my best to contain myself and limit the screaming, but sometimes that's the only way to gain attention and get the point across.

But because you're apparently cstanton's significant other, and he's a GREAT FAN (couldn't resist), I'll do my best to honor your request....

ps...it will be hard; this is the closest I've come to having a "cyber" identity and I don't mind being forceful expressing my opinion..but i digress

So here is a possibly really stupid idea...

why not give Eakin a try? He is tearing it up with the Broncos and while they were only pre-season games, he seemed to hold his own.

I think we are ruining MaJo by forcing him to play a role he is not ready for. What could it hurt to give Eakin a couple games to see of he's ready...he is probably not, but as long as we don't waste a contract year with him, who cares?

Thoughts?

Though we could say that The Ducks have one of the worst goals against in league. That may be helpful However they have won six of their last ten. I think The Caps will lose three of their next four. It is an unhelpful schedule. They are all teams we have difficulty with even when we are playing well. Atlanta will over take The Capitals in this time period. they are playing strong team hockey and buying into Ramsey's system. Call them the way I see them.

Posted by: pkme | December 14, 2010 12:15 PM | Report abuse

@ThePat – ouch didn’t know it was that bad. Do you know if it was a concussion?

Now, regarding this debacle, since the start of this season it was clear to me that they weren’t firing on all cylinders. I couldn’t put my finger on what the issue was. But it was clear the offense is just not clicking. Looking at last season Caps when it was an offensive juggernaut, we had BMo & Belanger, two fairly decent centers. Now we only have MJ90 a rookie, so it’s not that difficult to conclude the problem might be our centers. The Caps are relying exclusively on Backstrom for playmaking, and if he’s having a bad day, we lose, plain and simple.

Rolston's cap hit is $5M. He is signed thru next yr. I would be stunned if there were any interest from GMGM. He would need to move some $ out in order to get him in here.

He's one of the fastest skaters in the league and is great on the PK/PP.

We were discussing him a bit the other day. I think he'd be a great pickup. But GM is an inside the box thinker, and he'd have to go way outside the box to even consider this.

ZK's consistently good on faceoffs, and is tough as nails. Imagine a 4th line of King, Konopka, Bradley.

The other guy I'd target is David Clarkson. The Devils are in cap hell, and you just might be able to steal him for a pick and prospect.

Actually for as much heat as BMo and Belanger took, last year they both had about 40 pts and were the like 60th and 61st highest scoring C in the league. That makes neither #2 line worthy on a contender. However MaJo and MP together won't get us 40 pts. Not even if you throw in Steckel and BGordo you might not get 40 pts. That is a major weakness.

@vermontcaps:

While I agree with some of your postings (and disagree with others), I have to say that using all-caps to get your point across could have a negative impact on your credibility.

There are ways to provide the emphasis you are looking for without "screaming".

Perhaps you may want to try using HTML "tags" to create boldface, italics or bold italics instead.

If you don't know how, follow this link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Html_tags

Then use the "find" function of your browser [ctrl+F] to search for the text: "Sets font to boldface".

That will scroll you past all the arcane techie stuff to show you how to tag text for boldface or italics (which, along with bold italics, are the only ones that work here at CI).

Just remember that the "start tag"(s) need to be at the beginning of the text you want to bold/italicize/both, and the "end tag"...well, you get the picture.

Play with it and test your results using the "Preview" button on CI...I think you'll like it.

Respectfully,
Das Rhino

@Tom - I couldn't agree more. If you remember I said at the beginning of the season that I thought we could at least get that much production from MJ or MP. Now that we're thru 25% of the season I doubt that's gonna happen. That's why I've been complaining of all the line shuffling etc. It's not helping either MJ or MP in their develpment to have different wingers practically every other shift. I mean why realease a lineup? It changes every other time out there it seems. When developing young talent they need as much stability as possible. I'm not saying don't ever change line combos but it's pretty crazy.

So I say either let MP or MJ take the 2C spot and give them Semin & Laich on a regular basis or get a more veteran 2C.

Oh Capt_Kirk_in_AZ, ye who has little faith. You will see, you will see. But yes, I'll be at least 25% right. Only need 35% more to pass.

Really good article...very balanced about BB, the caps, and the slump.

Very good article. That's pretty much exactly how I feel. If we go 4-9 over the next 13 games, there's a good chance it's time to make a change.

We are likely to have that kind of record double Alex.We are facing a tough schedule and taking on teams that play strong defense and can shut down our offense. Plus the sparks are not just going to magically appear. the one thing is that BB should have been fired after Montreal. there was no excuse to lose to that team. I thought maybe one more season a couple of weeks ago but the future is now. The Caps also look like they are physically out of shape all season. Now they are out of shape mentally.

Some of you guys think Boudreau is untouchable. Think again.

Two years ago the Penguins were under .500 further along in the season than this and replaced their coach and went on to win the Cup.

Hockey is not like the NFL where a coaching change usually is followed by wholesale roster changes and a pullback in competitiveness for a couple of years.

Washington has the assets to put together a Cup run, but they need to be able to HONESTLY assess their talent up and down the roster and see if they can move someone to garner the front of the net performer the team has lacked.
