Caps assign Alzner to Hershey

Karl Alzner has been reassigned to Hershey, I'm told, and Matt Bradley has gone back to Washington to be with his wife, who is having a baby.

I'll have more after the morning skate at St. Pete Times Forum.

Well, at least the Bradley baby question has finally been answered. All we inquiring moms want to know . . .

. . . Tarik, let us know the blessed outcome!

Best wishes to Matt and Sasha on their new arrival! He deserves the night off, anyway.

See you again soon, Karl.

Go Caps!

Posted by: CapsChick | December 7, 2009 10:36 AM | Report abuse

I hate to see Alzner go, he's looked pretty solid.

Posted by: Chad8 | December 7, 2009 10:36 AM | Report abuse

im guessn no matter how well Alzner plays...he cant stay till they get some cap relief ( Nyls) or make a move.

Posted by: thd1 | December 7, 2009 10:42 AM | Report abuse

Damn Salary Cap- Hang in there, Karl, you'll get your chance.

Posted by: dlakjesad | December 7, 2009 10:48 AM | Report abuse

With Alzner reassigned and Bradly sent home how will the d-pairing looks like?

Posted by: FCKoeln1 | December 7, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

It's not the salary cap. Alzner fits while Knuble is on LTIR. It's a roster space issue.

Posted by: jincargo | December 7, 2009 10:57 AM | Report abuse

(sorry) ... d-pairings look ...

Posted by: FCKoeln1 | December 7, 2009 10:58 AM | Report abuse

Well Alzner has made it clear that he is ready for the big league. I loved having him in the lineup. He was solid and effective.

And congrats to Brads and family. That's great news.

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | December 7, 2009 10:59 AM | Report abuse

If it's a boy, will he name it Danny?

Kidding of course. Lots of Brads love in front of this screen.

Posted by: Fro_ | December 7, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

@Brads baby:

Hopefully it's all going smooth wihtout any complications ...

... and of course at first: congratulations and all the best to his wife (she has the difficult part in this) and his baby ...

Posted by: FCKoeln1 | December 7, 2009 11:15 AM | Report abuse

Alzner has looked really solid. Can't wait to see him back.

Posted by: josheyre | December 7, 2009 11:24 AM | Report abuse

Well congrats to the Bradley family...hope all goes well!

As far as Karl heading back to the Bears...salary cap I HATE YOU (in this situation)! He was looking really good, well besides the penalties!

Well...I am hoping for another good night for the Caps...and hoping for 6 in a row!

Not that this is huge news, but Sugden is headed to the KHL.

Anybody notice how well the D has played since Poti went down and Alzner came in? I really hope this trend continues with Poti back. Come on Poti! This team is starting to click...it needs you to step up!

Posted by: DisgustedinArlington | December 7, 2009 11:40 AM | Report abuse

@Fro

Sugden should played vs Philly next month!

Posted by: SA-Town | December 7, 2009 11:43 AM | Report abuse

go go baby Brads

Posted by: rh71 | December 7, 2009 11:45 AM | Report abuse

@SA

That was sort of my first thought. But don't we have a couple other tougher guys down there too? One of the McNeill's I think?

Or maybe Laviolette will just sit Carcillo and Cote. As I hear they're dead weight in his type of system.

@DIA

Poti is so overrated, overpaid, overweight (jk), overstated... Alzner is so much better than he is... So is Schultz... So is Pothier... So is Jurcina...

I'm with you on this. He's an alright player and eats up a lot of minutes, but he's getting paid an awful lot to do that. It would be awesome if the Caps can trade him and his $3.5 mil cap hit for this year and next to another team.

Posted by: cainoo7x | December 7, 2009 12:01 PM | Report abuse

Aw! Too bad about Alzner, but I have confidence he'll be back soon!

Surprising news about Sugden; I really liked him and his permasneer-smile.

And - GO BABY BRADS!!! Hope all goes very smoothly. :-)

Posted by: irockthered | December 7, 2009 12:01 PM | Report abuse

I'm glad that Bradley apparently won't be playing tonight. It sounded as if he was going to try to give it a go, despite Saturday's concussion, which I thought would have been foolish. Better to be conservative where head injuries are concerned. I hope that all turns out well for baby and mother.

Posted by: rbpalmer | December 7, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

I can picture Brads looking in the nursery window with his recent cut up face yelling, "Loser, loser, loser; yea, best baby."

Posted by: beeman | December 7, 2009 12:11 PM | Report abuse

I don't know about Jurcina, but I agree that Alzner, Schultz, and Pothier have all been better than Poti this year. Poti hasn't been awful, but he's definitely overpaid for what he brings to the team.

Posted by: butcherbaker | December 7, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

Juice is playing against better competition and his end results are better than Poti. Juice is ranked 15th in the entire league compared to defensive defensemen. Juice at $1.5M is much better than Poti @ $3.5M.

Posted by: JSchon | December 7, 2009 12:16 PM | Report abuse

Right on JSchon. #55 is ranked up there as well.

@Fro_ - Витязь? Vityaz?! Oi. I hope they are financially able to meet whatever contract they offered Sugar, because they are currently dead last in the KHL standings... wow. Best of luck to the big guy!!!

Posted by: irockthered | December 7, 2009 12:27 PM | Report abuse

Congrats to Brads and his wife. The kid will probably come out with a bloody nose and a toy light saber in their hand.

Sorry to hear about Alzner. He definitely played well and definitely showed that he belongs up with the big boys. Now its up to GMGM to make room to get him here.

GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: pkendrick | December 7, 2009 12:27 PM | Report abuse

@Fro_ - Grant McNeill is who you're thinking of. He's been in several fights, but is also a bit injury-prone...

Posted by: irockthered | December 7, 2009 12:29 PM | Report abuse

Alzner is down because of his salary and his contract being able to be moved to Hershey without repercussion. Lets all be honest and all agree, if it were as simple as playing your best 6 defensemen, then Alzner would be here.

Posted by: JSchon | December 7, 2009 12:32 PM | Report abuse

@JSchon

Speaking of Poti and the Caps D, it will be interesting to see who the Caps retain next year on D with all the RFAs and UFAs they have at the position.

Posted by: cainoo7x | December 7, 2009 12:35 PM | Report abuse

I think when Poti is healthy, he is a solid D man...I would prefer to see Schultz and Sloan or Erskine go to make room for Alzner...but I have a feeling it will end up being Pothier.

Posted by: capscoach | December 7, 2009 12:37 PM | Report abuse

@cainoo7x

I'm hoping they are able to move Poti soon, I don't even know if they are thinking about it, it may wishful thinking for me.

But moving his salary would open up things this summer.

Posted by: JSchon | December 7, 2009 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Pothier makes sense to be moved because he is UFA after this season. He is also playing well so his stock is up.

On the other hand, maybe teams don't just want a rental player. Maybe they want a solid guy for a couple of years. If that's the case then Poti or Erskine make the most sense. I would prefer Poti because Erskine's true value comes in the playoffs where the game tightens up and his skills are put to better use.

I doubt GMGM wants to move Sarge or Sloan. BB is big on Sarge and they both have very small salaries which would not help to make room for Alzner.

Posted by: pkendrick | December 7, 2009 12:42 PM | Report abuse

Congrats to Brads and to Mrs Bradley. He's one of the hardest workers in the NHL, and he deserves some recognition for it. That's not the first time he's changed the course of a game with his grit.

Speaking of hard-hat earners, I can't wait to see Laing come back to the lineup. Welcome back, QL! And Mike K, of course. He's been missed.

It's a shame Alzner had to be sent back down, I think he fit in well. He's not perfect, but he was a good physical D who played good positionally.

pkendrick

True about the salary issues. BB has always had a soft spot for Schultz...never could figure out why...I can't stand seeing a 6ft 4 (I think) D man that won't check hard!

Posted by: capscoach | December 7, 2009 12:57 PM | Report abuse

@capscoach

maybe because Schultz is too busy dislodging the puck from the player as opposed to dislodging the player from the puck.

One keeps you still in the play, the other does not.

Just 2 different schools of thought, both effective.

Posted by: JSchon | December 7, 2009 1:02 PM | Report abuse

@capscoach

Schultz leads the team D in +/-at +12 and has taken only 8 penalty minutes (only Poti has less among the regulars). He is clearly doing something right.

@JSchon

"Juice is playing against better competition and his end results are better than Poti. Juice is ranked 15th in the entire league compared to defensive defensemen."

15th in what?

Posted by: butcherbaker | December 7, 2009 1:02 PM | Report abuse

@Jschon and others

Here's a snapshot of the D situation for next year with the player's name, current Cap hit and next year's Cap hit/contract status for next year.

Green - $5.25 mil, $5.25 mil
Poti - $3.50 mil, $3.50 mil
Pothier- $2.50 mil, UFA
S.Mo. - $1.975 mil, UFA
Juice - $1.375 mil, UFA
Erskine- $1.25 mil, $1.25 mil
Alzner - $1.198 mil, $1.198 mil
Sarge - $0.715 mil, RFA
Sloan - $0.640 mil, UFA
Carlson- $0.875 mil, $0.875 mil

As BB has been saying, assuming Carlson is ready, the team has 10 NHL capable defensmen and given that logjam, its highly possible someone gets traded this season, or in the very least, some of the UFAs won't be brought back.

Assuming, Carlson is ready to play a full season in the NHL next year, the Caps will have Green, Poti, Erskine, Schultz (he'll be brought back for sure) Alzner, and Carlson. Ideally, if I were GMing, I'd bring back one of Juice or SMo for depth which would allow Erskine to be used as the 7th who could crack the lineup when needed. Even more ideally, I'd trade Poti and bring back both Juice and SMo.

He's actually 6'6" and he does well because of his reach. I wouldn't mind him not being a big hitter if he were a faster skater. Although he did do a very good job against Briere on Saturday. I remember seeing Sarge use his reach to disrupt play and that's why BB likes him.

Posted by: pkendrick | December 7, 2009 1:07 PM | Report abuse

There is no way that the Caps let both Juice and Schultz go. If anything Carlson will patrol Hershey again. The Caps have never really rushed anybody for that reason as well as salary cap reasons.

Posted by: JSchon | December 7, 2009 1:10 PM | Report abuse

@ butcherbaker

James Mirtle, From the Rink in SB Nation recently ranked the top defensive d-men across the league. Not only was Juice at no. 15 but Schultz was at 8 I believe. So they are both doing something right.

Posted by: Capsyoungguns | December 7, 2009 1:11 PM | Report abuse

I like the idea of not rushing Carlson. Yes he has impressed but we have time with him.

Posted by: pkendrick | December 7, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Thanks for the link JSchon -- interesting list.

I'll bet GMGM signs Schultz to a 3-4 year deal at 1.5M/per. And, yes, that would be a good thing. Also, if we can move Poti, I would re-sign Pothier along with Juice. Pothier is basically the player that Poti was supposed to be when we signed him.

Posted by: butcherbaker | December 7, 2009 1:16 PM | Report abuse

BTW... Backstrom is the NHL's #1 star of the week.

I kinda' am feeling bummed out about Sugden leaving. Woulda' been nice to see what he coulda' done for us. =/ Good luck over there, Sugden.

Best wishes to the Bradley family!

Let's goo, Caps!

Interesting comments on the d. I think the Caps should hurry up and trade ... noone. Regardless of what opinions we all have about the guy relative skills, something is going right this year, why mess with it? The team has the luxery of extra d-men who have played together and are (mostly) on the same page. No doubt there will be some more injury time (nothing serious, I hope) during the rest of the season so having guys familiar with the systems and each other will help the team to keep thriving during those injuries.
