Alzner Recalled

I just arrived at Boston College for the Caps' late afternoon practice, their first team activity in six days. I'm counting 14 forwards and seven defensemen, including rookie Karl Alzner, who has been recalled.

Defensemen Tom Poti and Shaone Morrisonn are on the ice and participating fully. Alex Ovechkin, meantime, skated for about 30 minutes before coming off early (which understandable considering he's the only player who had to work over the weekend).

I also covered Bruce Boudreau's induction into the AHL Hall of Fame in Worcester earlier this afternoon. Unfortunately, you may have to wait for tomorrow's paper for that one since it's getting late and I'm running up against deadline.

Update:The lines looked like this:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Laich-Fedorov-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander/Steckel-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley/Clark

The 'D' pairings were all over the lace.

I'll have more later.

I thought someone needed to be out before KA could be back with the club. Hope this means they traded MN!

The Caps offices at Kettler are closed today, so I'm not surprised that the Web site is not being updated at the usual rapid pace.

No surprise that he's back...
Gonna be real interesting seeing what kind of roster shell-game GMGM is gonna pull.

Tarik,

I know I'm going to get shouted down for this, but I kind of like it when you don't essentially post the article on the blog before hand. Its nice to read something new when I sit down with my cup of coffee in teh morning and read the fish-wrapping edition.

If its a massive injury or a gamer, that's one thing, but the back story pieces like the recent one on Flash are great to see for the first time in the paper. So, I'm ok reading about BB's AHL HOF moment in print for the first time.

I expect to be lambasted now...

I dont think the salary cap supports all these healthy players and an Alzner call up. LET THE WILD CONJECTURE BEGIN!!!!

So some people did catch the TMNT reference. :) *tickled* You guys are awesome.

Alzner recalled, eh? Thought maybe. Question is, who does he replace, and how are we wrangling that with the salary cap? As WEF said - let the wild conjecture begin!

Tarik, what are they working on? Please say it's the PK.

oldtime--

I generally agree with you. I like getting breaking injury news, game updates, etc. as they happen, but you're right that for the most part if I'm going to read it in the paper anyway (which I always do), it sometimes lessens the excitement to have already seen it in the blog.

That said, many time TEB posts quotes on here that don't make it into the paper, and I wouldn't want that to stop.

Theoretically, we may have enough space for a few days of "Mr. Kleen" at least. I doubt he stays here for the duration without a move or two, but I think we've saved enough being just under the cap in the early part of the season.
majiksea, There's no trading Minnesota, no matter how much you try. Canada won't take it without sending at least Alberta back and that won't fit under the salary cap. :P

Here is what I am looking for tomorrow night. A change to this caption from his page on TSN.ca.

PERFORMANCE

BACKSTROM IS COLD

0 pts in last 3 GP

@jmu_capsgirl

You have been on a roll since the "LOUD NOISES" some time ago. :)

wtf_e_fehr, It's amazing what sleep deprivation and stress do to your sense of humor. :/

Related to TSN, I noted that they listed Eminger as TB's "Norris" and "breakthrough". Too bad its for a division rival, but I always respected Emo for his professional approach to being a healthy scratch 40 consecutive games (which I know isn't right, but humor me).

@Scott in Shaw, Certainly, the "extra bits" are also welcome, as is the heads up that the story's in the paper tomorro. Those of us who care about line combinations and the like are coming here anyway.

if alzner is back - my guess is that poti won't play yet. i haven't seen anything about it yet - but if he is still on LTIR then they can still exceed the cap

I wonder if Karl still has headaches.

Posted by: Section117 | January 26, 2009 6:11 PM | Report abuse

Now that Ovi and Malkin have made nice, my trade rumor seems more likely...

Posted by: Leeguru | January 26, 2009 6:20 PM | Report abuse

Poti is still on LTIR. If Poti is ready to go tomorrow, then Alzner can be sent back down before the game. If Poti needs to sit, Alzner is up and ready to go.

Posted by: SA-Town | January 26, 2009 6:29 PM | Report abuse

Glad Karl is back, I'm still holding out that Poti stays on LTIR, I'm just not ready to see Karl go! I wouldn't mind waking up to a Nylander trade tomorrow morning though...

So how does the Ahl Asg work? Canadian all stars against American all stars? I saw Coiny and somebody else on Aas an Helmer and Giroux on Cas, that's kinda weird playing against guys on your team.

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 26, 2009 7:24 PM | Report abuse

Somebody else is Bourque

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 26, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Lets see, we trade a state, Minn, that tends to elect clowns to political office for a province, Alberta, whose idea of a good time is a party with 100,000 drunk cowboys. I'll find a way to get that under the cap! We can throw in North Dakota (nobody there to complain)!

Posted by: majiksea | January 26, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Gee, Borque, still looks like Borque. Do you think he is a pod person?

Posted by: majiksea | January 26, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

I sure Fehr gets a chance to develop, his stats are really good considering the amount of ice time he gets. 6 or 7 mins of ice time, no power plays, lots of points per minute.

Posted by: Freez | January 26, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

Aw they took Flash off the FFS line?

I see no reason for that. I love Laich but Fedorov and Semin played great with Flash the last few games. Flash can finish better than Brooksie IMO.
