Alzner Shows Another Side for Caps

(Toni L. Sandys -- The Washington Post)

If you're looking to pass the time until the Caps and Blackhawks face off at United Center (not on TV, but you can listen in here), we bring you a feature on defenseman Karl Alzner:

Karl Alzner is reminded of the daunting challenge he faces each time he walks into the dressing room at the Washington Capitals' Arlington practice facility. It's right there along the wall to the right -- the locker stalls of the seven defensemen who helped the team advance to within a game of the Eastern Conference finals last season.
Alzner wants to have a fulltime spot along that wall come Oct. 1, when the Capitals open the season in Boston. But, barring a trade, injury or the unlikely decision by management to keep eight defensemen, he knows that will only happen if he outperforms one of the incumbents over the next two weeks.
"This summer I started thinking about all the successful defensemen and what they do that I don't," said Alzner, who will turn 21 on Thursday. "I thought about guys like [Nashville's] Shea Weber and even [Washington's] John Erskine. I know the coaches like that Erskine is physical and a force out there. I want to be that guy if I have to."

@fatboy08:

You got your Richards mixed up.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_Richard

Henri, the "Pocket Rocket," is younger brother to Maurice, "the Rocket." Henri had a great career, but he was not the player that Lafleur was IMO.

There are a number of records in sports unlikely to ever be bested. Henri Richard is such a person. Very likely no one will eclipse Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak, nor top Cy Young's 750-odd complete games, nor Glenn Hall's 502 straight games started and finished as goalie, nor Richard - he holds the NHL record for having won the most Stanley Cups as a player - 11. Most were won when there were six teams. It's almost inconceivable that any future NHL player could capture 11 Cups. OTOH, maybe if Bettman stays around...Crosby?

@icehammer

Thanks dude. I keep getting page cannot be displayed even after the IE download...any suggestions?

Posted by: ralCapsFan | September 19, 2009 9:08 PM | Report abuse

is there a bar on the top of the page that says it needs to run an add on? If it isn't that then I don't know I had no problems.

Posted by: icehammer97 | September 19, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Also make sure you actully installed the add on not just downloaded it because it needs to actually be installed. It only took about a minute for me.

Shots 10-8 Hawks after one score 1-0 Hawks. Neuvy has looked good. Caps have 3 minors while not having a single Power Play yet.

2-0 hawks :(

Posted by: rachel216 | September 19, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Some rook skated untouched into our zone then snapped a shot through Pothier's legs and over Neuvirth's glove hand shoulder.

It was a great shot but poor defense.

Posted by: tmac2yao | September 19, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

Neuvirth getting 0 support from our offense. Easy to tell we're not dressing the A squad.

Posted by: thiazzi | September 19, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Wilson!! 2-1 hawks. let's go caps!!

Posted by: rachel216 | September 19, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

wow another Caps penalty. 4 PPs for hawks, zero for us..

Posted by: rachel216 | September 19, 2009 9:45 PM | Report abuse

That's our 9th penalty in less than 5 periods of play. Our opponents have had 2.

So you are saying that Quintin Laing is going to be more than a fourth liner who plays on the PK, which is what I said he was going to be? Where do you have him on the roster? Top line with Ovie? Second line with Semin?

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | September 19, 2009 9:58 PM | Report abuse

Real sketchy play by Neuvirth trying to handle the puck out of the net. Nearly resulted in a shortie for the Hawks.

Posted by: tmac2yao | September 19, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

As much as we all have a soft spot for Laing and what he brings to the game (blocked shots galore and killer smile), I doubt seriously if he has any real chance of making the roster. I do, however, think it's a positive to have a player such as he in the organization.

Posted by: gonchpup | September 19, 2009 10:12 PM | Report abuse

alzner wore 47 in his first game, then switched to 27

Posted by: arcassells | September 19, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

this team needs an agitator, not necessarily a tough guy but someone who gets under your skin... guys like Neil Sheehy who was about the only one who could get under Gretzky's skin... LOL

Posted by: joek443 | September 19, 2009 10:19 PM | Report abuse

joek I don't think an agitator is really necessary in the new NHL. Pittsburgh didn't really have one last year and neither did the Wings when they won the Cup.

Posted by: icehammer97 | September 19, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

My money is on Laing making the club with Flash and Fehr out.

Any word on why Green didn't make the trip...was listed in Tarik's lineup by I see Pothier is playing his 2nd game instead...

Posted by: ralCapsFan | September 19, 2009 10:29 PM | Report abuse

I think the rosters, both Caps and Bears, are fine the way they are - enough role-players and plenty of depth. Keep them healthy and get the performance out of them that is expected, and we should be in for another great season.

Posted by: gonchpup | September 19, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

ralCapsFan I hadn't heard anything on the TV coverage but since it is the Chicago feed it doesn't mean anything. It may just be that he was never supposed to be in the lineup and the one we got was not right or the Caps decided to keep him out.

Posted by: pachanga74 | September 19, 2009 10:53 PM | Report abuse

PP hasn't looked good at all tonight but since Liach is the only forward who plays any PP at all in the NHL in our lineup tonight that is sort of expected

After 3:

Chicago Blackhawks 2
Hershey Bears 2

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | September 19, 2009 10:55 PM | Report abuse

personally I prefer goalies like Neuvy who relies more on positioning than flashy, athletic ability but that ship has sailed more than a couple decades ago.

that doesn't mean he can't be a solid NHL goalie for this team but to go far in the playoffs and win the Cup, you need flashy goalies like Fuhr, Roy, Hasek, Brodeur and MAF. yes the wings also won the cup with Vernon and Osgood who aren't really flashy but I think Varly is more likely to lead the Caps to the promised land than Neuvy.

Gotta be pleased with the effort so far... now let's leave Chicago with the OT win!

Nice effort with 9 Bears in the lineup.

Can't wait 'til Monday! What a long summer it's been!

Posted by: gonchpup | September 19, 2009 11:08 PM | Report abuse

Perreault made a sick play about 20 seconds before the goal to generate a breakaway. I think he pushed the puck forward off a faceoff.

Nice game.

I thought Neuvirth was very good for the most part. His biggest gaffe was when he tried to play the puck out of the goal on one of our PPs.

Pothier didn't have a very good game on either end of the ice, in my opinion.

Posted by: tmac2yao | September 19, 2009 11:09 PM | Report abuse

It's only pre-season and the Caps/Bears showed a lot of heart out there. Hat's off to the kids!

Posted by: Terptwin | September 19, 2009 11:09 PM | Report abuse

In fairness to Pothier, he led all Caps in ice time so maybe he was a bit winded. I just seemed to notice mistakes he made at both ends of the ice.

Posted by: tmac2yao | September 19, 2009 11:13 PM | Report abuse

I hope there is a recap at some point that has the full play. My computer froze with about two minutes left in OT when I got it loaded back up the game was over so I didn't get to see the end.

Posted by: icehammer97 | September 19, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

Pothier was one of our heroes in the Buffalo game so he should be forgiven. Great game by our "defenders and grinders". Gee, wonder what happened to Green? Hope he's okay.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | September 19, 2009 11:31 PM | Report abuse

Why is everyone expecting there to be something wrong with Green? A bunch of our top guys haven't played yet because its the preseason. Unless I missed something, I don't think there is any reason to assume something is wrong with Green anymore than anyone else who hasn't played.

Posted by: mrszilla | September 19, 2009 11:35 PM | Report abuse

mrszilla the reason why is according to the last blog he was supposed to be in the lineup tonight but wasn't.

Posted by: icehammer97 | September 19, 2009 11:38 PM | Report abuse

Tarik (and I) assumed that Green would be playing tonight since he was at the first Caps practice today (i.e. the Morning Skate) and, given that the rest of the guys who showed up at the Morning Skate went to Chicago.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | September 19, 2009 11:50 PM | Report abuse

Well BB is probably gonna say that Wilson was the best player on the ice tonight. In my eyes he was anyway. LIstening to Eddie O call the game (color) he mentioned several times about how Caps were in front of the net setting up screens etc. Pretty solid game for 9 players not being on the normal roster. Madden played a great game for Chicago as well laying down blocking shots. Heck we actually blocked 11 shots in the first period alone (or 13 I can't remember). Regardless Chicago only had 3 blocks in the 1st. PP looked not so hot but that's to be expected as well. PK I thought looked more aggressive. Chicago was tape to tape on alot of the passes on their PP and still didn't end up with great opportunities but when they had em Neuvy was there. Overall solid effort for the 2nd preseason game.
