Open thread: Capitals at Ducks

By Washington Post Sports Editors

logologo The Washington Capitals (29-18-10) face off against the Anaheim Ducks (32-21-4) tonight for the second time this season.

Anaheim won the Dec. 15 contest in overtime, extending the Capitals' season-long slump to seven. This time, Washington is looking to avoid a four-game skid by building upon an encouraging (albeit losing) effort in Phoenix.

Faceoff: 10 p.m., Honda Center; TV: CSN; Radio: 1500 AM

Update: 6:34 p.m. PST
Based on warm-up here's what the lineup should look like against the Ducks:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Johansson-Semin
Chimera-Perreault-Bradley
Hendricks-Steckel-Gordon

Defense
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Hannan
Erskine-Sloan

Goal
Varlamov
Neuvirth

Scratches: Mike Green (inner-ear trauma), D.J. King and Patrick McNeill.

I didn't see that much encouraging in the last game except for Bradley's effort and his line along with a few others. I won't bore you with the sub par play of at least a half dozen others who look like it is just another day at the office.

So what's in store tonight? Hopefully not another 2-0 loss.

On a side note, the Caps e-mailed season ticket holders today telling us that the renewal information is coming soon!

For the love of god, Ted, do something. Change something up. Not only are we losing, but the Capitals are just plain boring to watch. Going to the games is borderline depressing given the team's performance for about the past 3 months. You're a businessman, Ted, and it's all about entertainment dollars. There are a finite number of them, and I'm not sure a lot of us are going to shell out thousands of dollars to watch this much longer. DO SOMETHING.

Posted by: wahoo_Mike | February 16, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Wow....lay of Joe B he is one of the best in the game. We are lucky to have him.

I absolutely love Joe B and Locker and cant imagine watching the Caps without them.

Emrick is also really good.

For the people bashing them, sorry we don't have boring ass commentators for you. Jeez.

I don't want to renew my tickets.

Brad Richards has a concussion. Cross him off the list.

We are gonna get shut out tonight.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 16, 2011 9:14 PM | Report abuse

I don't want to stay up and watch...sleep would be so much less stressful! Don't want to see us make an icon out of another backup goalie.

If the Devils keep winning, I wonder if they will look to trade Arnott? He's my first choice for a 2C. But he may not be available.

I wonder if the Caps should have waited before sending out those sty renewal emails? I got one and deleted it in frustration! Now if the WaPo would only let me change my id as this is most definitely NOT the year!

Posted by: Thisistheyear | February 16, 2011 9:15 PM | Report abuse

I want Umberger! And Clutterbuck!

Semin for Nash? Yeah, right, Columbus would do that. If we throw in Kuzzie and Neuvy.

And I want to put my vote of support for Joe B and Locker. I find them very entertaining.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 16, 2011 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Isn't Umberger hurt?

Posted by: Thisistheyear | February 16, 2011 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Joe B, Locker and Smokin Al are all awesome. Too bad the team stinks!

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 16, 2011 9:23 PM | Report abuse

All right gang. Enough gloom and doom already. Let's take a delusional (?) look on the bright side.

We have a thriving NHL franchise that sells out night after night. They are still holding on to a playoff spot. They are slowly but surely getting its players back. And, who knows what GMGM has up his sleeve for the trade deadline?

Did anyone hear about the Thrashers today? Part-owner Michael Gearon all but assured that the Thrashers would move without an influx of capital. He and other owners can't stomach the $20M shortfall. What a shame it would be if Atlanta lost its 2nd NHL franchise!

Whew, I'm sure happy we're not in the position of the local Thrashers. I honestly don't know who would consider buying in/out except for Arthur Blank.

Geez, Umberger just threw the front of his upper body in front of a shot 3 secs left to keep 3-3 tie and go to OT.

Semin, Holtby, Eakin and 2 #1s and throw in Poti and Steckel for Nash and Umberger. Make it 3 #1s if need be.

My final offer: Semin, Holtby, Eakin, Poti, Steckel, Perreault, Aucoin, Collins, three #1s and a bad contract extension to be negotiated by McPhee later for Nash and Umberger.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 16, 2011 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Crab cakes and chardonnay. I'm going to watch live and rock the white like in the old days.

I want to thank George McPhee publicly for driving me to drink.

@tominsocal1

Toss in two Red Rockers, a Zamboni driver, and the guy selling Red Russian drinks outside section 110 at Verizon and you may have a deal!

Posted by: AADCDERM | February 16, 2011 9:44 PM | Report abuse

@thisistheyear

Umberger took a knee to knee hit but came back in in the 2nd period. And was all over the ice the rest of the game. Including a blocked shot in the final seconds to get the game to OT.

Tom

You are too funny.

Posted by: pkme | February 16, 2011 9:46 PM | Report abuse

I do agree... Umberger + Nash would be pretty awesome (and I'd drive Semin to the airport myself if need be). Are they really rumored to be shopping Nash?

Posted by: chombie13 | February 16, 2011 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Any trade rumors about the Caps? Don't tell me that McPhee just wants to make just a few minor adgustments this time around.

Posted by: caraveli | February 16, 2011 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Could really use some chikken little right about now. What happened to him? The gloom became unbearable?

Posted by: jakopz | February 16, 2011 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Players potentionally coming to DC:

C's - Cogliano, Arnot, Reasoner, Connolly
RW's - Hemsky, Hejduk, Kovalev, Alfredsson (I was told I could put these, really)
LW's - Ruutu J.
D's - Greene, Gonchar (yup), Martinek

Players rumored to go are just about everybody outside of the "young guns", Hendricks, Brads, Knuble, Hannan, Alzner & Carlson.

That's about as detailed as I'll ever get. The reason being is this, I doubt very seriously you will hear GMGM say that things are very quiet on his end and he doubts he's gonna do much come deadline day. He has a lot of things going on and it's just a matter of seeing where the dominoes fall.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 16, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

you guys are funny. why would Columbus trade Nash that was playing with Blue Jackets since day one.

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | February 16, 2011 9:56 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: slurpeesarecool | February 16, 2011 9:58 PM | Report abuse

WE don't need RW. Semin, Fehr, Knuble, Brads, King. Center yes, but I doubt that Sabres would trade Connoly. Arnott is way too old

Posted by: beforeitstoolate | February 16, 2011 9:59 PM | Report abuse

I predict a win. 3-2 Caps. Caps will win at least one game during this road trip to ensure that there's no shake-up.

I actually opened a bottle of French white wine since last time I did that, Caps won at Ottawa to break a slide.

This particular wine (Anjou, chenin blanc grape) has tiny bubbles in which means something wrong in the process.

That's OK I'll drink it anyway if it helps. Really doesn't taste like chenin blanc though too tart and not enough of the fruity sweetness.

Anyone calls me sweet and fruity and I'll slug you btw. Unless you are female, then you can call me sweet and fruity all night long.

I heard an unsubstantiated rumor that we were going to trade several of the CI trolls for a bag of used pucks, 5 dirty laundry bags, and a bag of garbage but the deal couldn't get done since the bag of trash itself was worth more than the trolls. I guess we are still stuck with them.

Haha. Lapierre gives the Craps the business. Former Habs represent!!!

Posted by: slurpeesarecool | February 16, 2011 10:12 PM | Report abuse

Unless you're the Avs, Oilers, or Sens, any team can make the playoffs. The Leafs and Panthers are streaky, but a long hot run, and they're in. Florida got screwed over by the Habs a couple years ago. The Devils and Sabres have found their game, and the Isles are slowly keeping a fight with the Devils as well. Except for maybe the Flyers and Bolts, no team can afford a long losing streak. If it weren't for a great October and November, we wouldn't even be in a playoff spot.

Talk about tilting the ice. ANA totally dominated every aspect of the first 6 min or so.

Guess there was no reason to expect them to be ready from the start.

Aside from his first shift, 19 has looked like the old 19. He gave 8 a nice lead on that pass that helped 8 get some momentum to break through. Nice finish. Old school 8.

Posted by: O-V-P | February 16, 2011 10:25 PM | Report abuse

For the locals here, I'll speak on Tmacyao's behalf...

Ovie has a low hockey IQ. A smarter player would have shot that opposite side and stayed on his skates. He could score like that more often IF he wanted too, but he is too fat and lazy. Less vodka, more winning battles along the boards.

=) jk tmac, love ya bud.

F EM UP CAPS.

Finally! Ovi used a different move on a breakaway. BB should have him skating with bantams at Kettler. Those kids could teach him a few new moves!

Posted by: jfk10 | February 16, 2011 10:29 PM | Report abuse

It sucks that we can't sustain pressure in the o-zone like ANA did to us early.

Even last season, we were very largely a one and done, score off the rush team.

Our forecheck has been miserably nonexistent for years. We've been better in our own end this season as far as not getting hemmed in as much but the beginning of this game was embarrasing for a team in this position. BB's not getting them ready.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 16, 2011 10:29 PM | Report abuse

Bingo Tmac, 19 hit 8 in open space! That's more like we saw last yr. I mean there isn't a 2 line pass anymore right? Silly me.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 16, 2011 10:29 PM | Report abuse

With that goal, maybe Ovie just jarred the memory of the Caps as to how they should be playing.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 16, 2011 10:30 PM | Report abuse

I still cant get over that ChimChim shot into the leg pad. And then I think about the other night when HE was the shot with 1.9 sec left. Really GMGM??? BB is still here why? Vomit.

ChimChim reminds me of Major League. Lou Brown, "Well you may run like Mays but you shoot like $hit. Everytime you shoot like that, you owe me 100 push-ups".

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 16, 2011 10:30 PM | Report abuse

Ovie has a low hockey IQ.

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 16, 2011 10:25 PM

He very much does, sad to say.

That play had little to do with hockey IQ. That was what he tries to do all the time and was what he did for so much of the early part of his career. It was speed and physicality. Very little to do with thinking the game on that play.

I can show you plenty of examples of low IQ play by 8.

In fact, I will since you brought it up. Stay tuned.

SeminAllOverTheIce

I can't believe you or anyone else taking aim at Ovie. No matter how much of a slump he is, he is always our best and hardest working player. The guy dominated scoring at NHL for 3 years or so. How did you suddenly decide that he has no hockey IQ. But since you descend to the level of personal attacks and slander (he is fat, drunk etc) I suppose nothing you say can be taken seriously.

Ovie and the entire team are having an inexplicably bad year. By my boy has been steadily coming back--more and more each game.

Caps seeking another complete effort tonight vs. high-scoring Ducks

By Katie Carrera

...

That was already out the window in the first 6 min of the game. They couldn't look less ready or get more dominated than during that stretch. The ice was as tilted as it gets.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 16, 2011 10:49 PM | Report abuse

@OVP

I agree. It's too late to fire BB to salvage this season. That ship has sailed. It's best to just ride out the storm and see what happens. Which will likely be a game 7 loss. :(

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | February 16, 2011 10:49 PM | Report abuse

One thing I'll always take credit for.

(cstanton was first to call to sign hendricks)

I was first to call to trade Chimera before even the playoffs last year. There is no aspect to his game (except speed, which is worthless by itself) that is even a C- by NHL standards.

Let's face it, half our players are one-trick ponies.

And then you have Perreault. When he gets a trick, let me know.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 16, 2011 10:50 PM | Report abuse

I think the Matty P experiment should be over. He's a nice kid but maybe a trade to Montreal would be in order as they seem to like the diminutive players.

Posted by: AADCDERM | February 16, 2011 10:46 PM | Report abuse
You'll have to take Gomez's contract first.

We already have David Desharnais anyway.

this team can't do two things right at the same time, when they play good D, they can't score... when they score a few goals, they can't defend

Posted by: joek443 | February 16, 2011 10:50 PM | Report abuse

Well the first 18 minutes were good. The last two were terrible. And after that 3rd goal, the heads went straight down. Will be interesting how we come out the first 5 minutes of the next period.

Posted by: ThePat | February 16, 2011 10:44 PM |

Is that a joke?

The first 6 min were as titled as the ice has been against all season, regardless if it was just 1-0.

All those optional skates over the past 3 years have finally caught up with the lazy capitals. They can't keep up with any team anymore. They practice once or twice per week. Most NHL team practices at a minimum 4 times per week.

They get great efforts from like 1 or 2 guys per night. Tonight it looks like Backstrom and Ovechkin are those 2 individuals, but of course 2 individuals will not get it done.

On February 15, 2009, with the Pittsburgh Penguins struggling to make the playoffs, the Penguins organization announced that it had relieved head coach Michel Therrien of his duties and had promoted Bylsma to serve as interim head coach of the team

It is not too late to make a right decision!

Question to anyone who might know: Leonsis is our owner, a bubbly salesman who really doesn't have a clue about hockey (not like a Canadian owner who grew up with the sport); McPhee is GM...make your own judgment; in between there used to be Dick Patrick, who has been in hockey since Gordie Howe was on that aforementioned teet.

I haven't heard anything about Dick Patrick in a long time. He used to be the little birdie who would whisper in Teddy's ear.

If he is gone and there is no little birdie it's no wonder the barn doors are open and the horses are running around the prarie in no particular pattern.

Rumor on THN is McPhee is negotiating with Nylander for next year.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 16, 2011 10:55 PM | Report abuse

I fear that if they do keep Boudreau, they might not make the playoffs. Remember, there is another long road trip coming up. Should have taken all those home games seriously, now it's the hard way and that's not good for a team with no confidence and no cohesion.

Dale Hunter has the pedigree (Memorial Cup - which is more indicative of teaching and mentoring than a Calder Cup), and not much reason to stay in the OHL other than his investment and the opportunity to work with his brother. Both of his kids graduated junior, which was the main reason he wanted to coach in the OHL, right?

He is an accomplished player, coach, owner, and father. He would fill the seats every game, like Pat Quinn or Mike Keenan. And he'd win.

You see the way 8 worked along the boards just now?

That needs to be the norm.

For a guy with his supposed strength, he needs to be winning a lot more board battles. I think part of the problem is a lack of effort. The other may be technique. He needs to learn to use his body better to shield the puck and fend off opposing players the way a guy like Hossa does for example.

What's going on with our goalies tonight? It reminds me of the Theodore days when we had to score 10 goals to win because each time we scored one goal, Theo would let in two. I'll still take this over 0 goals.

tominsocal1: as long as I can have the fine French wine you are having, I'll be sure to stop by. How many of your 130 bottles have you had so far? If it will help us score the two exta goals we need, just keep up the good work.

I can't decide. Did we like this period? It was all over the map

Posted by: caraveli | February 16, 2011 11:40 PM | Report abuse

I'm pretty sure that the puck that squeaked through Neuvy was defelcted right in front of him. We've been giving up way too much time and space in the d-zone all game long. Neither of our goalies were getting much help. I suppose the same could be said for ANA's goalie.

WHIFFGATE!

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 16, 2011 11:42 PM | Report abuse

The Caps need a goalie. Neuvy needs more time in Hershey...

The Anaheim announcer just somehow called Jeff Schultz a "physical presence back there."

He's obviously never watched the caps.

Chimera gets goalie interference when Sutton walks free. Not as unfair as Mubarik v Egyptian people but what the hey.

Ducks announcer just said it is "Tiger Woods Learning Center Night" at Honda Center.

This game is nuts. I realize that this isn't playoff hockey, but I miss this style of play. The Capitals are playing with fire and emotion, and when a mistake is made, the players are doing their best to correct it on the next shift and recover for their teammates. Maybe this is the style of hockey that we DO need to play to win...

I criticize plenty of others from the GM to the coach on down.

As far as the extra criticism of 8, two reasons for that.

A) He makes nearly $10 mil per and takes up over 15% of our cap space. He's held to the highest of standards.

B) He is a borderline idiot when it comes to hockey IQ/ability to think the game. His success has largely been due to physicality and athleticism. His contract will be a huge dead weight if he doesn't become a better decision-maker and more complete player as his athleticism declines. He's currently one of the dumbest so called "elite" players in the league and he has enormous gaps in his game. A more knowledgeable and firmer handed coach would go along way to helping him improve upon his weaknesses. The marshmallow currently behind the bench doesn't hold him accountable for crap or doesn't know how to teach/demand the details.

the play continues because a caps player knocked off the net. the ref can let the play go and he did. you're right that as soon as the caps control the puck play stops.

@SAOTI - very nice game sir! Very well played indeed! Don't believe what those bums have to say about ya! What do they know anyway?

i begged for almost a month for them to figure out their offense - well they did - just 48 hours to late for me to get to see it live

hey tmac enjoy the win man jeez. enough of the negativity. give it a rest for one night and let us enjoy this. The guys looked like they were having fun tonight for the first time in a while and maybe this will spark a streak.

That was fun.

Posted by: zmega | February 17, 2011 12:39 AM | Report abuse

Cautiously pleased with this one. If they regained a little bit of their offensive swagger tonight & we can put down the 6 goals against as mostly being a result of shaky goaltending and fluke goals, I'm happy if this carries over to the next few games.

Worst case scenario...the offensive outburst is an abberation, the defense/goaltending is taking a step back, and Boudreau's job is safe at least through the next big losing streak.

Posted by: Hatfield223 | February 17, 2011 12:39 AM | Report abuse

And for all the people that I'm sure will praise the Caps for this performance cuz it reminds them of the run 'n gunners from last year, no... just no.

We were piss poor defensively (forwards and d-men) in this game. I don't care how good Getlaf's line is, we were giving up way too much time and space all night long and not just to their line. This game needs to be an outlier from a defensive perspective.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2011 12:40 AM | Report abuse

@SAOTI

That is a good stat for Semin...but only scoring in 13 games out of 50 or however many he has played is not a good rate.

The guys played hard tonight, which is a good sign. Now they need to play hard again tomorrow night. And actually play some Defense. We got lucky that the Ducks goalie stinks. I think the Ducks are going to have to look at acquiring a goalie with Hiller's health issues. Otherwise they are going to fall right out of the playoff picture.

Posted by: ThePat | February 17, 2011 12:40 AM | Report abuse

Okay, what got them to behave like the Caps of old tonight? And why, at the same time,
did we let in 6 goals on 21 shots?

Oh what does this all mean and what is the meaning of life? Please hurry up with your answers to the first two.

Posted by: caraveli | February 17, 2011 12:41 AM | Report abuse

@Tom - sorry sir but Varly & Neuvy will be your goalies for the playoffs. In that order too if you ask me (if healthy). Now if either of those go down before the deadline I'm sure GMGM knows who he'll call to get playoff help if needed. It'll take an injury though in order for us to acquire a goalie.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS: Well I couldn't see the game and then the Caps audio internet feed dropped to the sounds of someone skating and shooting a puck for the last 4 minutes of the game. Welcome back Semin.

GOALTENDING: Mulligan?

Sure this was a big win but doesn't hide the defiencies on this squad.

MEMO TO BOUDREAU: Take Ovie off the fricken point you idiot. All that Haagen Daas is giving him a brain freeze.

@Tominsocal1 - no matter how wild - the wine did it again haha :)

It's been a two point night. Off to San Jose.

We can't do the part about shakhy goaltending and flukey goals since by far the biggest problem was the team defense. It really isn't even close. The goaltending wasn't nearly as bad as the score reflected. The defense was just horrible. The first 6 min of the game were a bad omen from that perspective.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2011 12:43 AM | Report abuse

Crappy team defense though and the first 6 min of the game were about as bad as I've seen all season.

Guess we're not going to give any credit to the Ducks?

Good game. These guys haven't shown this much energy since...I can't remember.

This was fun to watch -- reminded us of last season. Just seeing that many pucks go into the net has to be good for these guys. And coming back about 4 times and then getting the winner. Stop the whining and let's hope this is the spark for a nice streak.

Much needed 2 points. I agree with the poster mentioning the offensive swagger. If they did get that back and combine it what they learned in terms of being defensively responsible then we might be on to something.

Still need a 2nd line center. I think Johansson will do excellent as a 3rd line center. He got stronger as this game went on. He's growing up pretty well.

they abandoned everything they've been doing lately. BB needs standings points. until they lock up a spot in the top eight - i'd expect them to stick with this game. it's nice to know they can play D - but either or won't cut it. i hope they find a nice middle ground.

Now let's see them bear down and go into a place of horrors for them, San Jose, and put in a great effort.

More important than moving 8 somewhere else on the PP is not having him play SO MUCH on the PP. Boudreau needs to cut his PP ice time down big time, esp. if and when Green gets back and we are at full strength.

This was a game where I'd bet there was ice or puck issues (not frozen properly). That puck was bouncin all over the place out there! We just happen to have enough go our way. I'd like to think it's because a lot of hard work paid off to where bounces went our way but that'd be way too optimistic of an answer wouldn't it? Well you heard it here baby! Althogh there were plenty of times this yr where hard work didn't pay off so be greatful tonight did.

I have several more French whites, one or two, so we'll see. Sacre blanc!

pokerface: I will win the bet as the Hawks will sneak in as 8th seed.

I'll give you another bet - Neuvy gets sent down between now and early April.

I think they needed this game to shake them up. We've seen them play some defense and put the clamps down. Now, we have seen them get in a dog fight, shoot out, with a good team, and they won. I know it was a back up goalie, but let them go score and do what they do. Then put the clamps on and shut it down.

Posted by: eorr53 | February 17, 2011 12:56 AM | Report abuse

YAY! The Caps have re-found their identity and that fantastic goal by Ovie got it rolling. Screw the defensive hockey, we can't play it anymore than I could win a formula 1 race. Go balls out from now on. I'm with the poster (and always have felt this way) from a few threads back: better to lose in the first round and be who you are, than try to be some crap trap team.

@tmacYao - were you kidding about Semin?? He had the jump tonight, his skating was 100% better. And all of his goals were in the dirty areas, the best being the second. No one else in the league could've scored that goal. If he plays that way every fourth game and sucks the other three (during which he usually won't be a minus) he's easily worth the money and gets the team an additional 20 pts in the standings. Semin got us these two points boys and girls, but it was great to see the whole team play their old stupid style.

If you break down each of ANA's goals, I think just about all of them were the results of bad breakdowns in front of our goalies... ANA players were getting way too much time and space to work with from the get go. Varlamov made a couple of big saves early that kept it close when ANA spent most of the first 6+ min in our zone. Maybe Neuvirth could've made a big save on Perry after he made Ovechkin look stupid but that's about it. On the near goal that Alzner saved, I'm pretty sure yet another ANA player was just chillin in front of the net and deflected the puck at the last second.

I'm thinking of a very old episode of Sat night live: the show before the 88 election when they did "Dukakis after dark". Instead of wasting all that money on tv spots, Dukakis puts on a monogrammed bathrobe and has pals and bunnies over for drinks. That's maybe what the Caps should do now - maybe this team can't win the Cup, but we can play with some joy and some guts. Play our game, not Brian Burke's game, and who knows how far it will take you.

In fairness, Ryan-Getzlaf-Perry is arguably the best line in hockey. There are obviously a few others that you could make arguments for but that line is deadly in a number of ways. All 3 are strong on the puck, Getzlaf in particular. Getzlaf is probably the most offensively poised player in the league. He has brilliant vision, creativity and hockey IQ. Perry is feisty and plays with an edge. He has a nice combination of grit and skill that complements the line well. Ryan is an awesome talent as well. That unit works together beautifully. After the Sedin brothers' chemistry, those 3 ANA forwards may have the next best in the league.

And boy does Getzlaf make those around him better.

After a thrilling game -- a relief to see the Caps get their scoring touch -- I come here to find the insane have taken over the asylum. Did our D suck? Yes, for a change, but the Ducks' D sucked worse.

We stole pucks, pressured, cycled, outworked them in front of their net and it paid off. Can the Caps play D? Of course they can, and they have quite well this season. But their scoring was lost, the team was lost, and could not seem to find their way. The Caps needed to score and score lots, and they did. That's a huge breakout for this team and a much needed antidote for games yet to come.

Posted by: Justafan | February 17, 2011 1:10 AM | Report abuse

And like somebody else alluded to, if Hiller's in net, we likely lose convincingly.

This was a fun game for some only because we won. The process was far from something to build on, even offensively for the most part.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2011 1:10 AM | Report abuse

it just feels good to get two points and to score 7 freakin' goals. sure we lacked the defense thing and the goalies had a tough night but it must have been such a huge release to fill the twine 7 times tonight.

i will celebrate tonight and hope that tomorrow night we can continue to score, but clamp down on that defense.

fun game to watch. i live in LA so it's early for me but my dad from back home in VA called as soon as the game ended and was so excited. i was just worried something was wrong having my pops call me at close to 1am!

it's a win baby!

Posted by: natresgroup | February 17, 2011 1:11 AM | Report abuse

Actually, I take the last part back. There were some very good things offensively to build on regardless of who was in goal for ANA. Still, we probably lose handily if their best goalie was available. We still badly need to learn to sustain o-zone pressure, particular with our top lines. We make bad decisions and don't seem to be encourage by the coaches to do things differently to create that sustained pressure. 8 is one of the biggest culprits. 19 and 22 are both strong along the boards and know how to maintain possession of the puck. 8 is more often than not the missing link on that top line when it comes to keeping the puck in longer.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2011 1:15 AM | Report abuse

And boy does Getzlaf make those around him better.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2011 1:08 AM

And Ovechkin makes everyone worse. That's why so many guys get big money contracts playing next to him. He's so dumb the players around him have to be good.

Posted by: ablake70 | February 17, 2011 1:15 AM | Report abuse

Specifically, 8 often fails to put in the necessary work along the boards or lacks patience and tries to do too much when there isn't anything there. There are times where he and the team would be well served if he'd show a little more patience and work a little harder along the boards. For all his supposed strength, he's awfully weak along the boards and when it comes to puck battles in general. Definitely an area among others that needs dramatic improvement for him to get where he needs to be.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 17, 2011 1:18 AM | Report abuse

The defense was terrible and that the goaltending was as bad as it has been in any game this season that you could write a book on how bad the D and goaltending were this game, but that was the most fun I've had watching a Caps game in a long time. That was entertaining, screw the 2-1 games, I want to be entertained.

Anyone blaming Ovie for the Ducks 5th goal is an idiot. It was a soft wrist shot from the blue line that took a strange bounce off of a deflection that caused it to loft softly into the goal as Neuvy never saw it. That happens less than 1 out of 100. It was a fluke goal, it happens in sports. Every goal against is not necessarily at the fault of a Cap.

Also, I loved this post:

"Semin has been a nightmare all game. Can't handle the puck at all. He still isn't back all the way.

Posted by: tmac2yao"

Now that is some great analysis there. If that is Semin when he is playing bad, I can't wait for him to get on his game.

I will say though, that getting Semin to score could be huge for the Caps going forward. He just seems like a guy who gets down on himself and frustrated when he gets into slumps. After he scored the 1st goal you could see him getting an extra jump in his step and you saw the happiness on his face. He started skating harder after pucks and started attacking the goal with more confidence as he went in with much more authority. That is a weight that is lifted off of Semin now and hopefully that will help get him on track.

Posted by: sgm3 | February 17, 2011 1:25 AM | Report abuse

@sgm3 - with you all the way - exactly what I saw with Semin, the old jump returning, the confidence coming back. Best player on the ice tonight. (If not, who was better people?)

Now, I can complain about a few things, though. Why is it - and it's all the lines so it's got to be systemic - that our forwards are miles away whenever an opposing D is shooting from the point??

Posted by: RedLitYogi | February 17, 2011 1:32 AM | Report abuse

Semin gave up some pucks, and tried too hard to hold onto others. But he had some key plays at key times. He pressured the man into turning over the puck to Laich for his goal, and scored three others that all our Caps would've loved to find the hands to score over the last two months.

If Semin can get back to where he was at the beginning of the season many of our woes will melt due to the contributions of this one player. He's rusty and this good now.

Posted by: Justafan | February 17, 2011 1:33 AM | Report abuse

One thing I really liked about the game was the incorporation of the stretch pass again. It has worked so well for the Caps before and other teams use it all the time. If you watch Philly play, they seem to be going for a stretch pass every few minutes.

Also, on the Ducks 2nd goal, the defensive plays MP and Bradley were horrible, just horrible. But it started with Erskine making a horrible icing by making a bad clear, and then following it up by not getting a body on Selanne in front of the net. But I do have to give Erskine credit for the fight and how he went in immediately to pound Sutton after that cheap hit on Hendricks. That was a good play by Erskine.

Overall, pretty much every defenseman played poorly in the defensive zone. Oh well, it was a great game to watch. I loved it.

hey tmac -

If ovi gave you a million check would you get mad because he spelled your name wrong or maybe put the wrong date on it so you have to wait a few more days to cash the check?

listen, i'm the first to admit ovi has a lot to learn to be an all around star in the NHL but man you almost never say anything good about anything all game long.

you should certainly quit your job, whatever that is, and become a video coach for an NHL team because you will certainly find every single mistake the team makes.

that's not meant to be a jab either. you do have exquisite attention to detail and a very good hockey mind but i do have to admit i've started rolling past your comments because they've become a broken record just like reading the players quotes about having to play harder. it's at a vermontcaps level with erskine and DJK.

ok, i said what i wanted to say. trust me you are very hockey savvy but your over critical cracks on OVI are getting old. we get it. besides you take away all the power of the trolls that come to the sight if you do all their bashing for them.

and i'll apologize in advance if i've angered you in any way. just felt like saying something.

How can a team go from exciting to boring in [1] year. since Bruce came to D.C. and "let the horses loose" the offensive system and Ovechkin brought me back to Hockey. Now Bruce and/or GMGM have given up on the offensive system and installed the old defensive system the Caps have always had---boring.They won three division championships in a row with offense and i was entertained and bought a season ticket the last two years. traveled 280 mile round trip from O.C. MD. They have been playing 500 hockey since Dec!'10?? I will not renew season ticket for more so-called Playoff Hockey. When you can't score goals no matter how good your goalies and defence is you can't win games. And 500 hockey is not worth 280miles round-trip. Caps will get into playoffs because of their pre-december play.if they continue to play under their present defensive system they will not win in the first round--UGH. CANCEL THAT SEASON TICKET NOW
GOODBYE CAPS.YOU GOT 2 CHANCES IN THE PLAY-OFFS----SLIM AND NONE.

TIRED--CAN'T WAIT FOR THE SEASON TO BE OVER NO HOPE OR CONFIDENCE THEY CAN EVEN WIN BACK TO BACK GAMES

PLEASE "TURN THE HORSES LOOSE AGAIN" BRUCE. THIS TEAM WAS BUILT FOR OFFENSE WHY THE HELL HAVE YOU GIVEN UP ON YOUR OWN STYLE OF PLAY BRUCE??? YOU DON'T BELIEVE IN IT SO WHY SHOULD YOUR PLAYERS???
