Atlanta goaltender Ondrej Pavelec collapses during first period

thrsasahersM2X0a0046_9.jpgAtlanta goaltender Ondrej Pavelec collapsed and according to a note from the Thrashers lost consciousness early in the first period of Friday night's season opener against the Washington Capitals.

With the play in Washington's end, Pavelec fell backward on to the ice and although it's unclear exactly what happened at this point, he didn't appear to receive any contact from a player or the puck prior to his collapse. Because the play was in the opposite end it took a few seconds for the players and crowd to realize Pavelec lying on the ice motionless between the two faceoff circles.

The first medical staff member to reach Pavelec immediately motioned for help. Pavelec was then wheeled off the ice on a stretcher and taken to a local hospital.

I'll have more updates as they become available.

UPDATE: Per Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal Constitution Pavelec has regained consciousness.

UPDATE, 10:33 pm.: According to the Associated Press, Pavelec is in stable condition. And the Thrashers have said preliminary tests did not determine any serious health problems.

Kinda weak first period but an incredible highlight goal.

I liked what I saw from Semin, Chimera, Hendricks, Fehr, Johansson, Carolson. Semin's knock-down and feed were incredible, and he had a couple of nice steals. Carlson and Johansson are going to be awesome. Still plenty of upside to Fehr. How nice that Laich picked up the first one. It'd be nice if he could find the back of the net with such ease regularly this season.

11 hits in the first by the caps - they should try and get to 60. that way if they don't have any in the next game - they can still be averaging 30

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 8, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

capt

no need to meet his requirements

Jeez it looks like two of our guys were screening.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 8, 2010 9:12 PM | Report abuse

Not exactly a stellar second period so far for the Caps. Neuvy deserves better support.

Posted by: wocoliz | October 8, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Getting heavily outplayed. The Thrashers are out-executing and out-working us.

Sloppy in our own zone.

The Semin line got a good forecheck going not long ago but for the most part, Atlanta has been the better team.

It'd be 4 or 5-1 if not for Neuvirth.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Pretty ugly... good early wake-up call win or lose.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:19 PM | Report abuse

And an already bad period gets worse. Come on, Caps!

AWFUL.

Horrible call by the ref there. I hope he get shown the replay between periods she he knows he blew that call.

Didn't expect to need a wake up call first game of the season, we usually save those for the play-offs. Maybe it's a good omen?

Just trying to find something positive in this mess

whoo hoo Julie!

Posted by: ebolean1 | October 8, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Neuvirth is a beast. The referree needs to go back and check his rule book. Green made a legit hand pass WITHOUT closing his hand on the puck. You tell me the ref saw that through that whole pile??? Give me a break. Horseshit call but that doesn't diminish the fact that this team sleepwalked through that second period. Neuvy saved their ass. They better repay him in this third period.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | October 8, 2010 9:24 PM | Report abuse

But Neuvy def. needs to work on stopping penalty shots.. that san jose game where he allowed 2.. yikes

Posted by: rachel216 | October 8, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Remember, the Thrashers also had a 2-on-0 and a goal that taken away after an early whistle.

They've had far more possession of the puck and less gaffes. Definitely the sharper team tonight.

We better tighten things up quickly. The EC has changed a lot since last season, including much of our own division.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Ugly first game so far. The story is out, drop five back, wait for the Caps to over-commit with all five, and strike back with an odd-man rush. The Trash are playing as a team and the Caps are playing like a pond-hockey pick-up game -- bunch of inidividuals goofing around.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | October 8, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Beat it Lisa Hillary! Wowser....

Posted by: EricinReston | October 8, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Hand pass in the crease isn't kosher? I thought you had to actually cover the puck to get that called. Missed call or not though, we're definitely being outplayed

Well it's not like we haven't been here before... Here's to hoping we can fix this over intermission like we did so many times last year :-/

Posted by: Raber | October 8, 2010 9:26 PM | Report abuse

It wasn't just the 2nd period. Atl outplayed us in the first as well. They dictated the play in that period and easily could've had another couple of goals.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:27 PM | Report abuse

You nailed it, JIMALLCAPS1.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Atl has had guys getting open in the slot way too many times. Our D has been out of position countless times, forwards and defensemen.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Ladd was completely unmolested. Green just chillin' behind him, serving as an additional screen.

The entire defensive structure is whack. Need to tighten up and get more physical.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

McPhee sure did a bang-up job improving on the team that sleepwalked through their last 3 games of the playoffs.

Fire that idiot ASAP!!

Did you see that play a few min ago where Green was going back to collect a puck behind the net with Peverley chasing him?

Green does that cutesy thing where he just casually lets the guy hit him and doesn't show much urgency.

Peverley just walked out with the puck.

Green needs to rethink that move.

ATKL is just mucking up the middle, forcing Caps to shoot from the perimeter or on -rare- oddman rushes.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | October 8, 2010 10:04 PM | Report abuse

Poti had a real good shift there.

We just look sloppy and a step slow out there overall.

Carlson was forced to turn the puck over a min ago because the forwards were way up high and didn't give him a target.

Eeeww...Alzner poked it right to the Thrashers and Neuvirth was caught out of position. Definately not the wingers fault, they cover the point.

Posted by: Caps4Life1 | October 8, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Well, Caps have come back from worse. This looks like the defense we saw last year.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 8, 2010 10:08 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | October 8, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS1 | October 8, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

I was just waiting for somebody to bring up that pathetic excuse.

This loss had nothing to do with Pavelec going down.

We actually came out better than them aftet the delay.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Neuvirth looks good, but Caps still keep hanging their goalies out to dry.

Posted by: MyPostIDisAfake | October 8, 2010 10:11 PM | Report abuse

Alzner can't cover 2 players. Semin darted across the circle off the faceoff and left Antropov or whoever it was unmarked.

Alzner was in perfect position. if the forward is there, he can easily prevent the shot, taking the body or stick.

I'll check the replay again but I don't think it was on Alzner at all even though the announcer said that.

Was that pre season? They played like they did last Sunday against Nash lets hope we can put some fire in them tomorrow night at home.
Its one game but we need to play a lot better. My worry is that they are so set focused on the play offs they might not even make it.

Posted by: callejo1 | October 8, 2010 10:20 PM | Report abuse

I hate it when we believe our own hype.

It's a good thing we decided to start playing better defense. I could see a difference since last year. We weren't running around lost and leaving checks wide open in the slot at all, good.

I know a team can't go 82-0 but that was brutal. Outworked the whole game. Stop believing your own hype Caps, you still have to earn the victories no one is gonna hand it to you. Play the f*(*& game.

I am hoping for Pittsburgh to win the Presidents trophy, with the Caps fighting to get about 3rd or 4th in the conference. Perfect way to start the playoffs. Assuming they do...

Posted by: el_oscuro | October 8, 2010 10:29 PM | Report abuse

I'm hoping to see the Caps finally have a well-constructed, well-balanced roster one of these days and playing responsible hockey in all 3 zones with attention to the little things.

I don't think it matters if the Caps finish 1st, 4th or 8th if they don't make changes to their roster and their style of play... assuming they do make the playoffs.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | October 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

And what's with all the cuteness by this team again? Sasha trying to thread the puck through 3 guys on the PP??!!

They'll play better tomorrow. But it's disturbing the way they played like it was still a preseason game.

Posted by: rachel216 | October 8, 2010 10:35 PM | Report abuse

Maybe another 9 of these in a row and we'll finally be rid of Boudreau and his nonchalant attitude and favoritism towards marginal players. Maybe after a full season of ineptitude or another playoff disaster we'll be rid of this crummy GM.

Feed bad saying that, but it's the truth. As currently constructed these Caps are going nowhere.

Posted by: Hatfield223 | October 8, 2010 10:36 PM | Report abuse

I barely care about this loss. What's frustrating to me is that McPhee felt that there was no need for change after continually coming up short when it matters.

Bad luck, a hot goalie, poor officiating, etc... is not the problem when it happens time and again.

There is something missing with the personnel or the coaching.

One possibility for all the regular season success is that we play such a run 'n gun style that when teams play us on a one-off basis, it's tough to adjust to. When you face a team 7 times in a row, the systems become easier and easier to exploit.

It's also probably a lot more "fun" to play for Boudreau because he's relatively player-friendly and doesn't hold a lot of the players responsible for certain things. Other teams are trying to do the right things becaue they know it pays off down the line even if it's not as fun.

Posted by: tmac2yao | October 8, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

If they are not going to try to win every game, at least they could have worked harder to improve on their defense. 4 goals against and 31 shots allowed is not improvement over last year.

Posted by: JohnWWW | October 8, 2010 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Obviously you guys didn't see BB post game interview. He was p!ssed that we weren't in the shooting lanes to block passes. I believe his comment was something to the effect of "we can block shots by pretending to be in the shooting lanes, we HAVE to get in them period"!

Anyway it's the 1st game. We were very rusty and the ice was horrible. Pucks were hoppin all over the place like they weren't even frozen.

We'll see a different Caps team tomorrow night.

Posted by: pokerfaceI208 | October 8, 2010 10:39 PM | Report abuse

More specifically, their coaches demand more attention to detail and two-way hockey in most cases. They get their players to buy in to doing the "not fun" stuff that wins you hockey games when it matters.

Our players buy in but what are they buying into? Run 'n gun hockey? Sloppy d-zone play? Forwards not having to come back consistently?

Posted by: wendel2 | October 8, 2010 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Well that was an interesting start to the season. Pucks didn't go the Caps way. A little loose at times and then actually spectating more than playing in that second period. Leaving their goalie out to dry.

This team wasn't at their best tonight and you don't want to start a season like that.

Not to mention after what happened to ATL's goaltender the Caps may have scored first but they didn't match ATL's intensity consistently. Need a better effort.

Semin's traditional whiff on a wrist shot and then trying to pass through 3 players. The "don't believe your own hype" points are valid. This team was lacking consistent fire tonight.

Those of you calling Boudreau and McPhee's head need to chill a bit. If they keep playing and losing like this - you better believe some heads are going to start being called forward to answer.

Not to mention some bad bounces. Caps announcers didn't mention it but that 4th ATL goal hit the defensemen and went up over Neuvy's shoulder. Lucky deflection.

S*** happens. Let's see how this team rebounds tomorrow night. Some of you seriously need to chill. I realize you're passionate and want this team to win win win win. And I see where you're talking about some of the same old wide open style. You're right - things continue like this and there needs to be some serious adjustments made. Not tweaks.

Anywho - poopy start.

Time to kick off the home schedule against NJ. ICE BREAKERS GOAL BREAKERS.

an intentional distraction from the Ovie Choke next spring........

Posted by: tjconnor | October 8, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Shooting lanes?

The first goal was a horrible giveaway by Flash. No time for anybody to do anything. Just a non-center trying to play center and choking with the puck on his stick.

The deflection goal was on Green for letting Ladd stand their unmolested. He had time to take his body more than do anything about the puck that he barely had time to see. He saw Ladd but just chilled standing behind him.

The third goal was a penalty shot.

The last goal was I believe Semin darting across the face-off circle leaving Alzner stuck on 2 guys. Not much Alzner could do. He had to try to poke the puck but he was on his guy. Antropov or whoever was left alone by the forward. I do wanna see this replay to confirm it.

Sure, getting in shooting lanes is always something this team needs to work on but I didn't see that as the biggest problem.

The oddman rushes, the relative lack of effort in all 3 zones, the unsustained forechecks other than on a couple of occasions, the inability to clear the puck out of our end at even-strength and on the PK, the cute stuff on the PP, etc... were all bigger concerns than getting in shooting lanes.

This is the 2nd year in a row that McStupid has gone with basically the same group of wimps. as a result, Fehr plays like The Invisible Man because he ( subconsciously ) has been made to feel ENTITLED. Same goes for the rest of these overhyped, underachieving chumps.
The elite teams ( and, Wash. certainly IS NOT one of them ) like Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia ) arecontinually trying to improve. McIdiot believes chumps improve their game by getting a year older. Now, THat'S BLATANTLY ABSURD.
Basically, ted is running a "Con" on all you idiots. Win a few meaningless reg. season games. Pack the building with suckers every night. And, NEVER STOP TALKING ABOUT THE FUTURE. Well, Puckguru's question is, "WHAT ABOUT THE PRESENT, TED? WHAT ABOUT WINNING THE CUP? Of course, he's convinced a lot of you morons that it's possible with a1st. team "Defense?" of Greene & MR. Nasty. Now, thaT'S GOTTA BE THE JOKE OF THE CENTURY. Or, "We're Cup contenders with rookies Alzner and What's his name. Again, UNBELIEVABLE!! But, many of you DO BELIEVE. All Puckguru can do is shake his head in disbelief. It's all so sad....

OK, we said we didn't care about or want a President's Trophy, so the team went out and played in a very mediocre fashion, without intensity, and lost. They'll win tomorrow, they'll win more than they lose, especially at home, and in a few months we'll see if they can find and use actual grit and determination to win in the postseason. And maybe that means that lackadaisacal, off the puck offense AND defense is really just a strategy in October, and not a character flaw.

All I can say is thank goodness the Caps all wore their special new motivational t-shirts under their pads! Most of the 2nd period they looked as though they had no interest in playing a hockey game. Obviously you can't win every game, but the effort seemed lacking...

I hope that Julie ignores the FOOLS who are posting all this CRAP after our first (freaky) game of the season.

Feel free to post anytime Julie!

@Hatfield223

If you were a true Caps fan, you'd be one sad sack if McPhee were gone.
He's largely responsible for what the Caps are now and would kick anyone's ass in 2 seconds if you talked crap about them

Not to mention some bad bounces. The Caps announcers didn't mention it but that 4th ATL goal hit the defensemen and went up over Neuvy's shoulder. Lucky deflection.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | October 8, 2010 10:46 PM |

Tons of goals in hockey are scored off deflections and lucky bounces.

The question and the issue here is how did he get so wide open in the slot?

From what I saw, Semin bolted off the faceoff and left Alzner out to dry. Alzner had to try to poke the puck because he had another guy right on his hip going after it.

Laughlin's comment made it sound like Alzner committed a gaffe but I want to see another replay. I think it was the forward covering Antropov that was responsible for that play. Alzner did all he could.

Alzner did look clumsy out there on that 2-on-0 early in the game. Bad ice or whatever, that wasn't good. Not sure who else was out of position there. Erskine maybe caught pinching? Not sure.

Rule of thumb: Ignore people that refer to themselves in the third person.

lol... "Stay Angry!"

That was pathetic. If the anger ain't already there, the t-shirt ain't doin' crap.

Almost makes you think it's yet another marketing ploy... eh? That was for the fans, not the players.

Hanlon got the Caps through their incubation period, BB got us to the playoffs, and now we may need a butt kicker - who holds even talented players accountable - behind the bench to put us over the top.

Are we all still so amused at Ovie's birthday pie face antics? Time for him to grow up and lead, or give back the "C".

We sure didn't play with much excitement tonight. Just 1 game, we'll get it back tomorrow at home.

I'm already tired of watching Green attempt to play DEFENSE!

wow - mason comes off the bench cold, becomes a hot goalie and beats the caps

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 8, 2010 11:36 PM | Report abuse

Mason was hardly tested. He made maybe 1 plus save the entire game.

Neuvirth was the hot goalie if anybody. Atl scores 7 or 8 goals if not for him.

Atlanta dominated this game in all 3 zones. Their goalie was fairly irrelevant, even on our PPs.

stupid comments. Sorry, Washington will never be a hockey town, or food town, or anything but a leech sucking government rip off town.

OK, got a chance to see the replay on the 4th goal.

I had Hendricks and Semin confused (28 vs 26).

Off the face-off, Hendricks skated in towards the dot trying to get the puck. He didn't come out with it and in the process, lost track of his man, Modin, who circled back around toward the slot.

The puck ended up on Antropov's stick and Alzner poke-checked it away. He maybe could've tried to send it across the ice towards the far boards but it was bang-bang and he couldn't do nothing.

Meanwhile, Modin was now unmarked right in the slot. Hendricks should've been on him. Nothing wrong with trying to win the puck off the face-off but you have to stay aware of your mark in the process while in the D-zone.

I put the play largely on Hendricks but Alzner could've tried to send the puck somewhere else despite not having much time to react. Antropov was almost in a shooting position and Alzner did pretty well just to be right on him and poke away the puck. If Hendricks is in position, it never gets to Antropov and probably ends up on Semin's stick to clear the zone.

@hockeypuck2

We need a real coach. That was a pathetic effort. Nuevi stopped it from getting silly. Maybe this is a good thing. BB will not win the cUp. You can't start a "Stay Angry" season with that wimpy effort. I don't care they know they're playing Jersey in 24. Flush Green and Flush. That stunk McPhee.

Gee ! I wonder how the homers are spinning this on Japer's ?

Huh?? What are the Caps now? McPhee has ONE playoff series win to his credit in 13 years. Any GM can preside over a losing team to accumulate a few high picks -- including one incredibly lucky draw of winning the Ovechkin lottery when we should have ended up w/ Cam Barker -- but the question now is, is he smart enough to fill in the gaps and make them a contender? I really doubt it.

I hope Pavelec is okay. But his collapse is nothing compared to the CAPS!

Posted by: festus75 | October 9, 2010 1:15 AM | Report abuse

That game is why the Caps will be better in the playoff's this year. They will have to overcome Montreal showing the NHL how to play the Caps. By the end of the season the Caps will figure out how to beat it. Or get the right lineup to. It's great our division will be tougher. That's what the Caps need.
