Wanna know what's really starting to annoy me? Everyone deciding not to take part in optional skates! The powerplay is AWFUL, but won't get fixed if no one is around to work on it. Ok. /end rant

2 points tonight boys. You can take it easy tomorrow.

Yeah we need at least a 3 goal win to roll into the break. The farther Knuble drops on the line combos (line 3 and counting!), the better off we'll be.

can anyone please answer me why jamie mcbain is all star gaming instead of carlson!?!?!?!? Why is Skinner there instead of Backstrom? Im not gonna watch any of the all star stuff just coz the voting and selection is always so horrible. I know Carolina is the home team, but this is a league wide event, it should be the best players, not the home town players.......

If that really happens, they may as well just stay in ATL and not come back home.

But not likely, the Thrash are done. Carolina is gonna jump over them and is not gonna look back.

Erskine with the best hit of the 1st pd so far. Thundering check inside the Atl blueline. He's the only current Cap dman who does that in the offensive zone. Simple pinch-in play that kills the Atlanta breakout.

Chimmylimmychoochoo with a big hit at the end at the whistle.

Can someone explain to me why Gordo is considered a great defensive forward? He just got schooled by Peverley. Gordo has no reach, he can't do anything on a forward with the puck except hump him from behind.

Brads looks tentative out there. Had a chance to line up some hits and he backed off.

nice xcheck by Perreault to turn the play the other way

he needs to do that more, just a subtle shot from the back to move someone off the puck. He's not strong enough to do it legally

MP having a decent effort tonight

We gotta get Erskine on Thorburn. None of our other D can handle him. He's not a bad player for being a waiver wire pickup

I was kinda hopin we'd get him when he got put on waivers initially by Buffalo. I think the Pens picked him up and then traded him for a pick to Atl

I like the look of the Power Play with OVi down low, and Green and Carlson at the point. Let's see if they stick with it for a while. We had great zone time and a few good shots from the point.

I'm so sick of Schultz. Its one thing to be ball-less. Its another to be a ball-less defensive liability.

and btw Kirk, Schultz made a career out of NOt being able to keep the puck in at the opposing blueline in his first 2 seasons. That puck always skipped over his stick. Guess he's reverted back to form.

Yes it is. Missing the Playoffs would not guarantee the Caps would get a new coach. Just look at the Redskins. They miss the Playoffs all the time and....wait. The Redskins do get a new coach about every other year.

But seriously...no it's not okay. Once in the Playoffs anything can happen. YOU WANT PLAYOFF HOCKEY IN WASHINGTON!

My biggest fear right now is that Boudreau gets frustrated with the lack of offense and abandons this smarter brand of hockey. The Caps are playing well and need to continue in this direction.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 26, 2011 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Schultz' +/- just dropped to a +1 for the season. Nobody is talking about his +/- this season. Hmmm, I wonder why?

Posted by: puckman

because the same fans who kept insisting that the rest of us didn't know what we were talkin about in reference to Schultz, could only point to his +/- as the reason they liked him

now they can't even point to that. Thank god.

I dont' know if he has much trade value to be honest. Probably get a 3rd rounder for him or a conditional 2nd. No more.

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 26, 2011 8:35 PM | Report abuse

The bad thing about this game now is...the Caps need 2 goals in the third period to get a clean win! This year and right at this very moment...I have ZERO faith they can pull it off!

I notice that BB when interviewed after the loss to the Rangers the other day that he was upset that his team didn't shoot more! He claims he tells them to get more pucks on net, yet they don't! BB is introuble in my opinion for this very reason. His players aren't listening to him! This is a problem! BB could be on his way out. But that won't happen until they get bounced out of the first round...AGAIN!

Posted by: ekbinion68 | January 26, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are still generating chances but not by playing high risk one-way hockey. The forwards, including 8, look committed to playing the right way in alll 3 zones. I just hope they get rewarded for this style of play so it recinforces the right habits. We've had a number of good scoring chances in this game and gave up 1 goal on an unlucky bounce.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 26, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Can't fault MP tonight. He's hustled, backchecked, and created some plays.

Does Bruce have the cojones to bench Sarge? He'll pull Erskine outta the lineup at the drop of a hat but Schultz is entrenched like a big lanky virus. His apathetic play really has a negative impact on our chemistry. He watched Green get railed twice by Thorburn and didn't even hit Thorburn when he had a chance. Then he helps an Atl fwd run over our goalie. Then his turnovers. He's horrible

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 26, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are playing like the Florida Panthers now. Why on Earth would you play that style with this lineup? God I wish we could have gotten Laviolette.

Posted by: alanb1 | January 26, 2011 8:40 PM | Report abuse

tmac you're 100% right. I think the players know this to be true. Bruce I'm not as sure. But for the moment, lets enjoy the fact that for the most part this team is playing the right way.

And the last PP was good. People crashing the net, digging for rebounds. They'll get their goals if they keep at it.

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 26, 2011 8:41 PM | Report abuse

I think too many fans got spoiled by that run 'n gun high-risk crap of the past couple of seasons. Any time that plays that way will increase their scoring output but at the cost of giving up more chances and goals.

It isn't easy to be strong in all 3 zones but the best teams are able to do it. Chicago was a good defensive and offensive team and they played excellent team defense with their forwards committed to playing in all 3 zones.

The answer for us isn't to go back to the high-risk, run 'n gun crap. It's too continue in this direction of defense first and learning how to create offense within that structure. That's what the truly best teams are able to do. It isn't easy.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 26, 2011 8:42 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are getting a lot of shots down low. That's impressive for a team recently built of 3-point shooters. Let's hope they can up the forecheck in the third - and knock in some rebounds.

you are so correct. Seriously, you are so correct. That's exactly right.

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 26, 2011 8:45 PM | Report abuse

And the PP issues are largely independent of pretty much everything else. Getting that fixed has nothing to do with defense and how we are playing right now at even strength.

26 shots on goal and 14 scoring chances in a road game and we've largely limited ATL's scoring chances outside of a few transition opportunities and a bad bounce.

Eventually those chances will start turning into a few more goals, on the PP and at ES, and if we continue with this solid team defense, there is the chance that we can be a much better team than we've been over the past couple of seasons despite where we've been in the standings over that span.

@cstanton1

We know you don't like Schulz and it was poor execution by him, but if that puck doesn't take a bad bounce(the bad bounce was clearly shown on replay) Schulz was in the correct position and performing the correct play by sweeping it to the opposite boards past the blue line.

What I hated most about that play was about 30 seconds earlier, when I think MJ had a good shot and a juicy rebound went directly to Laich right in front of an empty goal. But hands of stone Laich misses the empty net by a mile.

Laich either shoots the puck directly in the goalies chest or misses the misses the goal by a mile. And he is completely ineffective in front of the net. When was the last time he knocked in a rebound?

I really think Laich should start being called hands of stone too because he does nothing with the puck. At least Chimera makes some plays with his speed. Chimera's hands are horrible, but he does contribute something to the offense.

I'm starting to think that Laich should never cross the redline and just play defense because he adds absolutely nothing to the offense.

I really want the players to get rewarded for doing the right things out there. I'm really proud of some of the things #8 has done over the past few games. I thought he may have had the best reg. season game of his career against TOR. He was terrific offensively and more importantly, DEFENSIVELY.

New "defensive system" is great and all, but completely worthless if we don't score...Losing 1-0 and claiming we "Shut them down" is really no different than losing 5-4.

How can BB not make some sort of change with this offense. Last year we beat the NYR on Monday night 4-1 in that game.

good game tonight. I thought Sarge blew chunks until the end of the 3rd pd where he had 2 good shifts

also thought ovechkin played like a d0uche tonight. Looked like a cherry picker and besides his one forecheck play on Buffy and later a backcheck on Buffy, he stayed away from the boards all game.

Not a bad effort though. The Atl goalie made 2 or 3 really good saves tonight.

shooting high was the right call by green - nobody is getting pucks in low on pajvlec. Im not a huge fan of the stretch game, but the caps need to throw a couple into the mix - this setting up in the zone just isn't working. 90% of the time in the offensive zone they had two d men right in front of their goalie. no way to get shots through. This team needs to learn how to score again.

I making an All-Star break wish:

That we never see Laich on the PP ever again and not placed on the top 2 lines ever again. He is atrocious offensively.

Yes cstanton, Laich is in the area in front of the goal, but he does nothing there. He can't tip shots and he can't score on any rebounds and he is rarely ever screening the goalie when the Caps shoot from the point. It's a phony net presences in my book.

I think the Caps should start using Hendricks on the PP in Laich's place. Hendricks has demonstrated an ability to create more rebounds and greater havoc in front of the net. I did enjoy watching Ovie in front of the net and he helped create scoring chances doing that.

I really hope Semin is back after the All-Star break. The Caps need someone who can actually shoot the puck and score. Fehr has the ability also so I'm looking forward to him coming back.

@SoaringCaps

I agree, this was the most boring game to watch in a long while. If all the Caps games are going to be like this I think I may start missing some. Nothing happened in this game. It was like watching grass grow.

The team comes up short a lot. They may be trying, but the results are Redskinesque. That is, close but no cigar. This team is simply unable to beat a decent team. It's funny reading the quotes about how they need to beat the Thrashers and have a positive vibe before the break. Now what? As someone said earlier, this team just isn't as good as we want it to be. Maybe the talent is overrated. Who knows. At this point, the point total is dropping in relation to the point total of other teams. Crosby is laughing. Heck, all of the NHL is probably laughing. Supposed Cup challengers. Well, maybe in a couple of years, after another rebuilding effort.

You nailed it.
That's why it's never good to say "they're a year or two away", because you never know. Last season was the time to put up in the playoffs and they didn't deliver.
This season we all keep waiting for the real team to show up, unfortunately maybe they're already here...

The Caps have looked puny for too long now. (In fact, we've been a middling team since our 14-4 start.) Ovechkin can't do it all. He needs more support out there.

True, we're still trying to overcome injuries, but so are the Thrashers (and many other teams). There's no excuse for getting shut out tonight.

Let's the All Star Break is a panacea for all that ails the Caps. They need the rest and they need to come back with much more fire for the stretch drive.

i do agree with some of your points though. Laich in some ways is an ineffective net presence. But at least he's trying. And he was hitting tonight. Had a great hit on the PP to keep the puck in. Nice big open ice hit.

I also support him being demoted only because he can't sustain the effort. He's like Gordo who had a good game as well but can't play lke that consistently.

POSTMORTEM - ERRR UMMM POSTGAME THOUGHTS: It is deplorable and inexcusable that this team loses almost 2.5 goals a game. Over the next 5 days the guys have to get away from the game. Ovi and Green need to just go have fun.

In the meantime, GMGM needs to sit down with Boudreau. Boudreau needs to figure this out and get these players believing again. They are a defeated team and once again make Pavelec look like a world beater. Sure they were victimized by a bounce but how do you go from scoring copious amounts of goals to this. Sure they are emphasizing defense but at sacrificing offense like this? Yes they had shots and how they didn't bury some chances - sure cue it up to unlucky but this is happening consistently.

These next five days could be very important to where this team heads after the break. If they continue on this way - they will fall out of the playoffs. That's not a guess - that will be a fact. If they can right the ship - they're in. I also feel GMGM is going to have to find a way to make a trade at the deadline that 1. makes sense and 2. is big enough to shake things up. The structure of this team is messed up and I'm sorry but even when Fehr and Semin come back - I'm not so sure it will make that big of a difference. Damn do I hope I'm wrong.

Thank goodness it's break time. This team, coaching staff, and organization better look in the mirror and find out what it's made of because three division opponent have shut them out this year.

FACT: The Tampa Bay Lightning are a step above and far better than the Caps right now. That may be a bitter pill for some to swallow right now but it is a fact. I'm going to the TB/Caps game in Tampa a week from Friday. I hope this is a different team.

Disgusting.

BB appears lost for an answer. However there's no way they'll fire him before the end of the season. It should have been done during the losing streak. Maybe they could have righted the ship. Now it's almost February and it's too late. I don't think a few additions at the trade deadline can change the dynamic enough.

the best part of this season besides the improved team play is the humbling of the coach, gm, and owner.

Their smugness was bound to catch up to em.

But every player from Brads to Green says the right thing. That the goals will come and they have to keep playing this way.

Joe B and Locker forgot to mention Kate Jackson, one of the original Angels, although Locker surprised me when he remembered Tanya Roberts, who was an Angel for only one season - the final one.

The Caps have whiffed on so many shots this season, it's unbelievable. I have to believe they're getting paid to blow these games, because there's no other explanation for how they can go from being the highest-scoring team in the league last season to forgetting the basics of hockey this season, e.g., ensuring your stick makes contact with the puck when taking a shot.

he may have gotten hurt in that goalmouth scrum. I think at this point the top line needs a proven veteran RW who has better legs and a more fearsome attitude than does Knuble. I wonder if Rick Tocchet still can play. He was quite the boost to the Lemieux/Kevin Stevens line.

Always fun to watch "Playoff hockey."

As I pointed out last time these two teams played, Craig Ramsey has absorbed every word of Jacques Martin's epic, "How to Beat the Caps in 7 Easy Steps." There were times when all five Thrash were in the slot. You'd think the Caps would cycle the puck to change the dynamic. NOOOOOO! It was just bombs away from the point as usual.

I have been asking the Post to investigate "Whiffgate" for some time now. Is it Ovi's eyesight? Shady dealings with Russian mafia? Is his IQ just way lower than even we expected?

We never got an answer though on why Nylander was Nylandered nor why King was Kinged so I'm not holding my breath.

From "Rock the Red" to "Powder the Pink." How did it happen?

I'm disgustipated. So disgusted I can't even, well...

as someone said tampa is a better team than we are right now and they did that, i believe, because they brought in a proven leader and winner in Stevey Y.

unfortunately our GM and staff don't have that lineage and pedigree. changes were made right away in tampa and every missing piece was addressed right away.

i think he's an intriguing prospect because he hits hard but also has some polish to his game. He can play the PP, the PK, be the 4th line energy guy, be an agitator. He does a lot of stuff. And he looks stronger this year. Rinaldo isn't an easy guy to handle despite his size. And although Pinner got the jump on him he still displayed good strength in that scrap. And what a hitter! And i love that he wears #13.

Posted by: vermontcaps | January 26, 2011 11:00 PM | Report abuse

To be honest, the nightly Gunsmoke rerun on the Western Channel is way more entertaining than these Caps games.

Can't this team do more than one thing at a time? OK, ok...the defense is decent and the PK is very good...we seem to have a checking line, and that's something some of us whined about for years. Can we get an energy line that cycles and cycles?

Another thing...Backstrom. Just. Stands. There. If he doesn't start moving, his nickname should be the Swedish Meatball.

Notice how Locker mentioned Dino's name tonight? I'd give my left one (I'm 53 anyway) to get someone like Dino as #1RW. That would help even more than a Hunter clone as #2C. I would take a Kono clone though for #2C. The MoJo can be #3 and MP can go back to Hershey.

Quite the war on ice. Those 2 teams have a long history of some real battles against each other. Dal-Edm played some of the best playoff series I've ever seen.

Looks like Sutherby has finally found a home and exCaps farmhand Travis Morin played for Dallas too. ExCaps draft pick Krys Barch with 2 fights in the game.

I'm sick of this crap, something needs to be changed, do I know what it is? No, but this team can not keep playing like this, and expect to go far in the playoffs

No Dinos or Pat Verbeek types avail unless you can somehow convince the Blues to part with TJ Oshie

Look at the Canes. They picked up 2 nondescript by solid role players and that has really settled down their lineup. They picked up Troy Bodie and Ryan Carter. Two strong defensive energy forwards who do a lot of dirty work and cycling down low. Its just about team chemistry. Its not always about adding a 30 goal scorer to the lineup. You're better off adding a wes welker than a randy moss. That's my $.02

The Bottom line is, it's the players who are not doing there jobs. Most of them are "fat & happy". Ovie, Nicky, Greenie, etc...they all got their BIG contracts, why should they work hard.

You can't go from 50+ goal scorer to "can't the net" in one year...

No heart with all the $$$$, welcome to DC pro athletes.

@cstanton1

You are right, Laich did try hard tonight. But this isn't kindergarten, you don't get gold stars for participation.

I'm not saying don't play Laich because he is a very good defensive forward. But he should not be used on the PP ever again. He is horrible at it. Last year was an aberration because the offense was clicking the entire year.

Also, no more Laich on the top two lines. Laich is a 3rd line player, nothing more. Now I believe he can be a top notch 3rd line wing, but he can't do more than that. For this coming offseason I hope the Caps pay him accordingly and not as a 2nd line winger. If Laich gets more than $2.5M/yr I will vomit in my mouth.

I know he got "player of the game" but that had to give it to somebody and you know how much the media loves Laich and his quotes.

Also, the Caps do need more skill. Now I think that will come once Fehr and Semin get healthy. Then all they will need to add is a good 2nd line center(yes another top notch winger would be nice also, but you have to be realistic in what you are asking for.

I will say it again though, I am very curious to see how this team plays once Semin and Fehr come back. I think it will be interesting. If the offense doesn't pick up then, then the Caps are in a lot of trouble.
