How come states that vote democrat typically have a wider income gap between the rich and the poor than states that vote republican?

Why are democrats trying to eliminate the middle class?

Why do democrats hate business owners who at the very least provide jobs or healthcare or etc. yet they love vain entertainers who only care about themselves?

Why are democrats pro-abortion?
Murder is wrong, therefor illegal
Stealing is wrong, therefor illegal
Rape is wrong, therefor illegal

Abortion is wrong, therefor legal? Or is abortion right? Liberals seem to think so.

If everybody were pro-thievery wouldn't stealing be legal? But no decent human being is pro-thievery because stealing is wrong!

Republicans want abortion illegal because they think it is wrong.

Democrats want abortion legal because they think women should have a choice to do something wrong? or do they think abortion is right?

That was the sharpest I've seen Ovechkin look in weeks.

He was skating better, handling the puck a little better and I even saw him make an excellent backcheck or two.

I definitely get the feeling that he's about to break out offensively and I hope he continues to progress defensively like I thought I saw happening a little earlier in the season.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 4, 2010 7:48 PM | Report abuse

OVerrated can't score again what a surprise. Good thing he's in the weak Eastern conference so that he can pad his stats a bit and make things look not as bad. Highest salary for this lazy mofo who hasn't won anything important in his life? Wow.

Posted by: BigGameSid | December 4, 2010 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Solid first. If Ovie doesn't end the drought tonight, I'll take full responsibility for jinxing him. I told my bar owning friend that gives a free Ovie shot to everyone whenever he scores a goal that I thought they'd being giving away many of those tonight. Notice I didn't shamelessly name the bar on here, I gots class.

Will we ever see another Republican President?

After watching Obama win by a landslide with more new democrats voting for the first time. If these same new voters continue their support, it's obvious America is overwhelmingly Democrat, how can the republicans ever win again?

Unless all the new voters were black and the only reason they voted was because Obama is black.

Posted by: Debaitor | December 4, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I just noticed how tight the top of the Eastern conf is.

There are 3 teams 2 pts behind us!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 4, 2010 7:54 PM | Report abuse

Hey bigGameSid. Your name shows that you really know very little about hockey. Crosby was horrible in the big games for Canada in the Olympics until he made one good play that happened at a good time. When the Pens won the Cup Malkin was the teams best player and Crosby only had one goal and two assists in the Finals and two of those points came in one game. He also was off the ice almost all of the final period of that game because he was "hurt" but magically felt fine when the game was over. So for all of the team awards Crosby has won the biggest reason why he got those were because of his teammates.

Ugly goal Varly!

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 4, 2010 8:14 PM | Report abuse

This ATL team is looking mighty impressive. They keep everything tight and all seem to buy into what their coach wants them to do.

I think it's good for the Caps that their is some better intradivision competition this season. It should be good for them in the long run.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 4, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Nice shot but that goal was Varly's fault.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 4, 2010 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Got to get a goal here.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:17 PM | Report abuse

It seems like the linesman has thrown the Caps out of the faceoffs circle an inordinate amount of times(it cost them on both goals too).

Posted by: sgm3 | December 4, 2010 8:18 PM | Report abuse

there is something about the scorer getting in on top of varly untouched that is not varly's fault

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 4, 2010 8:21 PM | Report abuse

@FunkyGloveFacewash If Varly doesn't go paddle down the Atl player goes across the front of the net and scores easy. Varly going down like that forced him to make a great shot from a horrible angle. That was the right play to make. If Hannan had not gotten sucked into the corner and could have cut off the middle then Varly could have stayed up and had a better chance on the shot but staying up in the situation presented would have led to the puck going in front of the net and Varly not having any time to go down or even try to make a save.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:22 PM | Report abuse

problem now for providing a physical spark to energize the bench and get the fans into is is that, game as they are, Hendricks and Bradley can't hang w/any of the Thrashers willing partners....they can't go after easy pickings, either, because we don't want the game turning nasty; wish DJK was in, he'd find boulton.......lets get one soon, GO CAPS

see, good things happen when you don't try to shoot the puck 200 mph every time...

Posted by: joek443 | December 4, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

how did they keep it in the zone that long 5-5? that was incredible!

Posted by: ebolean1 | December 4, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Only bad thing about that is now at the end of the period we stand a good chance of losing the momentum.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

I'm just glad the Hokies are playing better than the Caps. Atl has the Caps' number this year, as much as the Caps' have Tampa's. Just not crazy about these last two outings.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | December 4, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

I just pumped my fist like I haven't all season long.

That very well could have been the best even strength shift in the NHL this season.

That was tremendous stuff.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 4, 2010 8:32 PM | Report abuse

Then FSU and the Caps both get late scores near the end of the period/half. Go Caps, go Hokies.

i actually counted thrashers on the ice - it sure looked like PP with the puck possession they had

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 4, 2010 8:33 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have played really good hockey over the last 5 periods despite not once having the lead.

If they keep playing this way, better things will happen.

Posted by: tmac2yao | December 4, 2010 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Pens send Mason packing 6-1 in the second and Crosby with more goals -- boo!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | December 4, 2010 8:35 PM | Report abuse

In the zone at the 2:24 mark and goal in with 48.2 so in the zone for 1:36 before the goal. Also when doing back Ovechkin was lucky he didn't get called for a cross check because he had two ggood shots at whoever 47 is. The first one was a really good shot the second one looked like more of a dive to try and draw a call. I am going to say the refs missing that makes up for one high stick.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:37 PM | Report abuse

The Jackets have been horrible since Thanksgiving including today they are being beat 21-7. Not trying to take away too much from the Pens but the Sabres just beat them 5-0.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

icehammer, true the D broke down on the last goal against Varly, but I still thought he went down too soon given the angle the shooter was coming from but IIRC, you play goal, so I'll defer to your perspective on this one.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 4, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

@joek443

hope you saw my last posts on the last thread....that was fun

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 8:41 PM | Report abuse

Make that 22-7 now for the Jackets.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Thrash are clogging the slot just like Habs did last spring and Caps are falling into the perimeter game trap. Hopefully that one shift and all that hard work will lead to more success.

BTW, how good did John Carlson look on that shift? What is he, 21? He looked like a solid vet there, and Alzner was where he neeeded to be the whole time.

All five caps had to play perfect hockey for over a minute to score. And they did it. Let's see some more in the 3rd.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | December 4, 2010 8:44 PM | Report abuse

Actually Tom he is 20 he won't turn 21 until the 10th of January. I still say he should get the Calder if he keeps this up. He has been getting some offensive numbers but he also is leading our team in blocked shots and is playing great D as well.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:48 PM | Report abuse

uh oh

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 8:52 PM | Report abuse

Enstrom needs to learn to keep his skates in. Steckel was going for a clean hit and instead of him taking the hit he creates the penality.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:54 PM | Report abuse

steckel probably would have won the PK faceoff - to bad he was in the box

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 4, 2010 8:55 PM | Report abuse

So their guys sticks his leg out our guy keeps his in and we get the call because their guy gets hurt and their guy comes across the ice to start a fight and doesn't get an instigatior penality. Are the refs even watching this game or not?

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Oh and all of this "call" on Steckel wasn't going to happen until after the fight.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 8:58 PM | Report abuse

these last few games really makes one question the qualifications of refs

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 4, 2010 9:00 PM | Report abuse

I should have known when I saw that McCreary was calling the gm tonight, that it would be another poorly officiated gm! I swear someone in the Caps organization must have left a flaming bag of dog s**t on his porch a loooong time ago, because he always calls our gms horribly.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 4, 2010 9:03 PM | Report abuse

Looks like the Refs saw a replay of their blown call and are making some calls to make up for it.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

they better get one on this PP

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | December 4, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

ok, now would be a good time guys

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 9:09 PM | Report abuse

oh well. sometimes you run into a hot goalie..

..............

Posted by: rachel216 | December 4, 2010 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Big Buff has a heavy shot like Al MacInnis...

hard to complain about the refs when you more than double up on the PP

Posted by: joek443 | December 4, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

We might finish with 50+ shots on this guy.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | December 4, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

@joek443 that is because the Caps have had the puck for more then 2/3rds of this game. They have missed two high sticks on Chimmy including one he was bleeding bad and should have been a 4 and called a kneeing play well after the play and no instigator for what was a textbook example of it. It is not the questionalble ones that are being missed it is the easy calls right in front of them that is inexcusable to be missing as much as they have tonight.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 9:18 PM | Report abuse

And as I send the thing about easy calls they miss another high stick this time on Carlson.

Posted by: icehammer97 | December 4, 2010 9:20 PM | Report abuse

god i do not want to play atl in the playoffs.....

Posted by: rachel216 | December 4, 2010 9:21 PM | Report abuse

doesn't matter how many PPs you get if you can't score, they've had more than enough chances for one game

Posted by: joek443 | December 4, 2010 9:23 PM | Report abuse

joek- just because we've had more PP's, doesn't mean they've called the gm well. Look at Chimmer's face and Carlson's high stick was missed, not to mention the call on Steckle. That being said, we still failed to capitalize on the PP's that we were given to us.

Posted by: FunkyGloveFacewash | December 4, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

and the Thrash had to play without their best D for most of the 3rd...

if this team can keep getting good goaltending, I think they'll be a better and scarier team later in the season than Tampa because they have more veterans with playoff experience.

Posted by: joek443 | December 4, 2010 9:27 PM | Report abuse

We'll NEVER win the cup with 55 in the line-up.He sucks BIG TIME!!!!

Posted by: Tondi | December 4, 2010 9:28 PM | Report abuse

you know, despite the disparity in shots i don't think the caps had the better of play....kinda reminds me of the game in st. louis, only the shoe's on our foot now

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

this game was eerily similar to game 7 last year. seems like semin tightens up when the going gets tough...shooting high, fanning, not burying opportunities

Posted by: mja712 | December 4, 2010 9:31 PM | Report abuse

I agree it is hard to complain about the refs when you get 5 powerplays compared to the opponents 2. But McCreary seems to miss more blatant penalties than any ref I have ever seen.

I remember watching a game earlier this year and there was a boarding call (I think it was Laich) and he was right there and it was the trail official who made the call. I think the play by play guy actually said something about how it was strange that the trail official made the call.

I don't think a referee should ever miss a high stick, esp. since they almost exclusively happen within 5 feet from the puck and are definitely a "safety" penalty as opposed to like a holding call.

Posted by: SFcapsfan | December 4, 2010 9:33 PM | Report abuse

Varly soft on the second goal. The game was eerily similar to the Montreal series last year. The Caps haven't learned how to defeat the collapsing defense and the "hot goalie" yet. I'm very dissapointed. A lot of the shots on goal were of low quality. One good thing, Ovi scored.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | December 4, 2010 9:33 PM | Report abuse

@tondi

earlier today i vowed to refer to *** as Dork forever.....joek443 got me all pumped up about the caps and feeling good; i subsequently had a change of heart and said i'd call him by name if/when he aggressively stood up for a teamate. I agree, if that was Erskine on the 3rd goal we gave up he'd be skewered; dork's big body and reach didn't help him on that one, he just looked like a flat-footed oaf

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 9:43 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan

Agree with you. We looked exactly like we did against Halak. There's something about those Czechs and their goal tending.

Glad Ovi scored. That's the only good thing about the game.

Otherwise, the Caps offense absolutely, positively sucked -- in that they can't score.

It's nearly to the point that I'd predict that Atlanta will break their playoff loss jinx -- against the Caps in Round 1 this year.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 4, 2010 10:41 PM | Report abuse

We have a lot of cold shooters, not just Semin. Fehr as well. He seemed to have a fair number of shots tonight but couldn't bury anything.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
From fainting in the first game of the year to looking like a rock solid wall that the puck happened to hit more times than I can remember tonight - hats off to Pavelec for a monster effort. It's not like the Caps came out flat and were listless in defeat. They threw the kitchen sink at Pavelec and he shut the door. Give him credit.

For two straight games - the officiating messed up. And no it didn't cost us the game. The Caps had their chances but on that Steckel kneeing - there was no penalty that was going to be initially called. When do you come back five minutes later and decide "oh you get a kneeing penalty" after the ATL player engaged him to fight and he gets no instigator. McCreary and that other yahoo - let's also not forget how many high sticks thhey missed tonight. That was joke. But again - not the reason the Caps lost.

Eric Fehr: PLEASE GET RID OF HIM. Once again he had a golden opportunity and was a dud. Dud dud dud. Scratch him or trade him. Ugh just not a fan at all.

Ovie: Welcome back to the scoresheet in the goals department. Hope he can crank it up now but I still say put him back on the right wing.

Here's to hoping Poti and Erskine can get back in the mix soon.

Again another game that happens from time to time. The other goalie stands on his head and beats you but let this game serve notice again since the 5-0 drubbing ATL didn't seem to get through that the Caps must realize these divisional opponents are much improved.

Keep chugging away - the Maple Leafs are next up.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS

Posted by: Jonathan6 | December 4, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

atlanta has our number it seems. strange how they can continue to beat us w/boulton in their lineup yet DJK can't crack ours. is it just coincidence that the only time we beat atlanta was when Johnny E. beat up boulton? it was disappointing that someone didn't try to energize the building after we fell down 2-0 w/a fight, but truth is we didn't have anyone on the bench who could hang with any of atlanta's willing partners. erskine misses 1st game of the year, we missed his hustle on the backline. once erskine is healthy, can bb please give shultz a few nights off?

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 10:56 PM | Report abuse

steckel was horrible in his fight, but at least he didn't get knocked silly like he did his last fight (knonpka last year)...once again for the bruins though, shawn thornton took care of business in toronto....it's a shame BB is such a pacifist, free DJK!!

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 11:02 PM | Report abuse

@vermontcaps

Many times I disagree with your posts but I think King will make the lineup on Monday -- in place of Steckel.

My husband thought it was odd that they didn't call the kneeing penalty on him until after the fight. That's true. But I feared that since the Atlanta guy was hurt, it would be a major penalty (in addition to the fighting major). I'm sure if Ovi had done the very same kneeing, it would have been a major. So I felt lucky it was only a minor. Still, the Caps failed to kill off that penalty and that was the killer.

So, I figure King is in for Monday, if for no other reason than to send a message to the guys.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | December 4, 2010 11:07 PM | Report abuse

@capsfan75

it's too bad BB would only use DJK as a pawn to send a message to the team...instead of just throwing him a bone, the team needs to work his fistic attributes into the lineup on a consistent basis.....with the personnel we have, the lineup in St. Louis was as close to what i'd put on the ice, the difference being i'd replace shultz with hannan

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 11:23 PM | Report abuse

On monday with orr and rosehill in toronto's lineup, that would be too much to ask of bradley/hendricks to respond or stir the pot if need be....and it's too bad erskine's a lame-duck, w/BB publicly stating that when all dmen are healthy he'll be sitting; my guess is his absence will show his worth, assuming BB gives him another chance and doesn't bury him like last year

@JIMALLCAPS2

The way we play Atlanta this year. It looks like Atlanta who's never won a playoff game much less a series will be breaking that jinx this year -- against us.

(Must admit I am not feeling terribly optimistic about the Caps' playoff chances at the moment. They'll make the playoffs but what will they do once they're there.)

@capsfan75

isn't that sad that, even though we've got some of the best players on the planet, you're afraid we face atlanta...atlanta?!? what you're seeing, and maybe you just don't recognize it, is that we lack that tough-as-nails- swagger. i had a feeling fehr was going to break-out, but he's continuing to show how useless he is as our "power forward"

Posted by: vermontcaps | December 4, 2010 11:49 PM | Report abuse

@vermontcaps

Yes, I fear Atlanta. A trap team with a very good goalie. Not our parents' Atlanta team anymore that had scoring but no defense.

They don't have the swagger of champions, I must admit. They were the team that went from terrible to first place -- seemingly overnight. Now they can usually finish first but underachieve in the playoffs.

But, back in the day, when they were loaded with defensemen, they still lost in the playoffs, even with talent.

I feel almost like considering the same sacrifice that Joe Boyd was willing to do so his favorite team could win. Except giving my immortal soul to the Devil is too big a risk.

@capsfan

It's always something the Caps run into, eh? A hot goalie, smaller/quicker teams, trapping systems, etc...I say baloney. We've got for more talent than Atlanta, and superior talent + superior determination will carry the day more often than not. The problem lies w/BB; too many optional practices, letting Ovi take too long shifts, putting his favoritism on display for all to see by announcing who's going to play long before the fact, he despises rough and tumble hockey and the thought of using that dynamic to alter a game is foreign to him. I'm sorry, Capsfan, but if we're fearing Atlanta then we're nowhere close to SC material. (Atlanta's an up and coming team, no doubt, but if you see them as a major obstacle, I won't ask about Boston, Philly, Pitts, etc)
