jrockstar: I don't tweet, don't blueberry, don't text, and I just got a cell phone a few months ago.

I'm trying to stay in the 70s. Life was very simple then.

The Sierra Nevada Tumbler Ale working nicely so far for an afternoon game.

BTW, any mention on Poti? I missed the pre-game but assumed he'd be playing. BUT, nice play by Sloan to start the third goal. The two Alexes made the goal but Sloan blocked a shot and shoveled the puck ahead to get it started. We pick on him enough, so must also give credit where due.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 14, 2010 5:58 PM | Report abuse

Another 2nd period to forget...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 14, 2010 6:46 PM | Report abuse

Wow. That period was uglier than Lindsay Lohan's mugshot. Maybe even uglier than some of Charlie Sheen's "girlfriends."

Some observations: Jeff Schultz, with that moustache, look EVEN MORE German than before.

If they were to remake "Frankenstein," would Craig Ramsey merit serious consideration for the role of "Igor?"

Caps are in a rut. Let's hope they get out of it soon. Usually it takes a few games though.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 14, 2010 6:49 PM | Report abuse

How about a German Sean Penn? LOL

I'm opening a bottle of red wine before the 3rd starts. Caps need the help.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 14, 2010 7:02 PM | Report abuse

hey look on the bright side. if we continue this inconsistent play it'll be just like last year. we win a meaningless trophy and fail in the playoffs. The bright side being that it won't be a shocker, then again, last year really wasn't a "shocker" to some of us long time caps fans.

how, as a coach, do you send a message to a team (or certain players) that just don't really seem to want to listen?

i hope they turn it around. not just in the third but for the rest of the season. find that consistency of good team play for a full game. play like a championship team and we can be champions.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 14, 2010 7:33 PM | Report abuse

HOW DID I MISS THAT!!??

(You turn away for 4 seconds to see the Cowboys' safeties screaming at each other and having to burn a timeout as a result, WHILE helping the Skins out by beating the Giants, and one of the seven signs of the apocalypse occurs, i.e., Erskine picks the top corner.)

May have confused my seven signs with seals or the seven signs of the second coming. Don't care. Something's wrong with Ovi/he needs to get more responsible NOW. Too many 3-or-more-GA games recently as well. Don't like the way the Caps are playing, though it sure is "fun" to watch . . .

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | November 14, 2010 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Well, there you have it, for the power of the red wine.

I wonder of some Dark Siders might complain that Erskine is only "stepping it up because it's his contract year."

Oh, Boudreau FINALLY sent the message some of been hoping for, as he put the grinders out there to get the empty netter.

Let's hear it again for Hendricks. cstanton1 called that one. He's another guy you might want to lock up come January 1st.

Informal poll: Based on what you've seen so far, if you can only bring back on enxt year, even at the SAME salary, do you want Hendricks or Flash?

Same salary??? Maybe Flash, maybe.

One dollar less? Hendricks.

BTW, Alzner made a great pick near the goal, late in the game, so Carlson could take the puck around Caps net. That's what playing together in Hershey gave them.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 14, 2010 7:52 PM | Report abuse

What was with the puck bouncing around all night!
Caps just need a good practice or two to get their game back under control. This happens a lot when you have a busy week with no real time for practice.

Posted by: capscoach | November 14, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

After being up 3 - 1 I would have thought the Capitals would have clamped down on the Thrashers. They can be an infuriating team to support. Kudos to Erskine for his fine performance this afternoon, I have always liked him as a player.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | November 14, 2010 8:12 PM | Report abuse

capscoach: Puck bouncing is bad ice. It's because the Wizards are playing now. It will only get (way) worse when Georgetown starts back with the noon games on days where Caps play at 7 pm. I am hoping in the next CBA the players insist on a clause minimum 15 hours turnaround time between basketball tip-off and hockey puck drop. We had hoped that would have gotten better with Ted owning everything, but I guess not. The bad ice not only causes bouncing pucks but ruts that contribute to groin injuries. Exhibit A: Tom Poti, a groin just ready to rip. Exhibit B: Chris Clark, he was the same way.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | November 14, 2010 8:26 PM | Report abuse

Did anyone else notice the awe on the Capitals faces as they watched the replay of Erskine's scrap? A fight that he won in my opinion.

It was another so-so performance for Ovi. He made some bad turnovers. He did get a goal (lucky) and an assist though.

Tyler Sloan had two assists and was a +2 for the afternoon, not bad.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | November 14, 2010 8:29 PM | Report abuse

It was not the best of the games for the Caps but of the 4 goals against we had one go off the back glass, off the top of the net, off the goalie, and in. A second goal that was high sticked, hit off the goalie's head then was hit in legally otherwise the first high stick would not have counted as a goal since the hit off Neuvy's head made it so the Thrashers could touch the puck again but would not have counted if it had just gone in. We also had a third goal that might have taken a weird bounce off of the D. Only one of their goals was not odd in one way or another. The Caps had an odd one or two as well and we won a game that we had several bad bounces against that ended up in the net and we did what we needed to do to win.

Posted by: icehammer97 | November 14, 2010 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Ovie is just not being physical any more (at least comparatively) no more huge hits, he won't dig for the puck, and his sticj hndlng is not what it was...but I really think he will figure it out...I bet he really hates that Semin is beating him! They may be buddies but I bet they are really competitive!

Posted by: capscoach | November 14, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

hey if Ovi wants to "coast" a little during the season then more power to him... maybe he has realized that the real season doesn't start until April.

Posted by: joek443 | November 14, 2010 8:43 PM | Report abuse

i'm glad they won - but don't really want to see a whole lot of these type games this year. i give them a pass - not because they won - but because sometimes sh*t happens.
they need to get back on track wed. against the sabres - and i would guess miller.

For some reason I have a double post two hours apart...

FloridaCapsFan: How bout cutting Ovi a little slack? That assist on Semin's goal was WORLD CLASS.

To everyone: Last year the complaints were that Ovi was too much of a raginb ull every game and if he didn't cut it out his career would be over by time 30 yrs old like Bobby Orr. Last I knew 3/14/10 Ovi plastered Brian Campbell into the end boards and got a suspension. Everyone said he needed to cut it out.

OK, so he cut it out! He still laid out some fine hits today. Maybe he's learning to pick time and space. Isn't this what everyone wanted? So, HOW CAN HE WIN?

Katie, can we please get a story on Ovi how he's backed off on the reckless abandon? My guess: Mama Ovechkina had some words with him over the summer about not ending his career prematurely. Or maybe Pavel Datsyuk had some advice. Or maybe the aches and pains were adding up.

THAT SAID, there's a thing in life called the "Happy Medium." Now, somewhere between the Wild Man in Borneo that he was and the passive skater we see now too often in the defensive zone is the player that Steve Yzerman became after Scotty Bowman gave him the lessons off life after becoming the Wings coach.

Boudreau sent a message today. Ovi and his linemates were NOT on the ice in the final minute. This is the time, when the Caps are ahead, when BB "rewards" the best players that game with the chance for an empty netter. I myself, if coach and/or GM, would have a Miller/Ridley/Kono combo on the team for such situations...but, tis not to be, so Bouds puts out that game's "best" players. Often, Ovi, Semin, Backie, Green...today, Steckel, Erskine, Hendricks, Bradley (I think that's what I saw).

This means to me that BB wants to cut off the "bad behavior" before it gets ingrained. Too often, in his book, scoring a goal equates with extra icetime. NO! It is the hard workers who must be rewarded, so it was a good thing today to see Ersk out there with Hendricks and Steckel. I'll bet if you check icetime you will also find no forwards way above the others! This is because BB fed up with lackadaisical play and spread around the minutes!

BB will never become Scotty Bowman (no one can) but at least anyone can learn a few tricks from the master.

(I myself with my daughters give them beers if they keep the house clean. Messy house, no beers. It's really the same kinda thing.)
