Aucoin Recalled

Center Keith Aucoin, the AHL's leading scorer, has been recalled and Graham Mink has been sent down.

Looks like the top line will be Alex Ovechkin-Nicklas Backstrom-Michael Nylander. Interesting, huh?

I'll have more after Bruce Boudreau talks.

I want Oskar

I wonder what line he'll play on. This is interesting!

Posted by: _jordan | December 4, 2008 10:15 AM | Report abuse

I brought my Mink jersey for tonights game too. Shoot!

Good way to drive up Nylanders trade value, get him a bunch of points in a few games and ship him out when people are healthy right before xmas.

Posted by: ThePat | December 4, 2008 10:23 AM | Report abuse

How Swede it is!

Posted by: SA-Town | December 4, 2008 10:26 AM | Report abuse

I don't think Nylander is going anyplace, since he said "this is where I play" while using a copy of his no-trade clause to paint himself red, white and blue.

Posted by: _jordan | December 4, 2008 10:26 AM | Report abuse

As we've seen by the slew of recent injuries, Nylander isn't going anywhere until we're ready to send him for a viable piece. We have a lot of Hershey talent, but if we "lose" Nylander to picks, we'll have practically no one to step in. I guess we'll see how Aucoin does tonight...

I don't think we'll see this line for long, though. Assuming Kozlov's not hurt, but Backs and Ovie are going to be annoyed with how much Nylander won't finish the play. Kozlov, for his flaws, is a good finisher when he needs to be.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | December 4, 2008 10:27 AM | Report abuse

Hope Nyls will shoot the puck....

Posted by: Steve_R | December 4, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

This is interesting. Maybe Nyls can draw some penalties with his skating..

I like the call-up and he'll probably play on the second line with Kozzy or Flash..

I would like to see Osala at some point.. Is there a money issue behind why they haven't summoned him yet?

Posted by: ovys8 | December 4, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

both*, not "but" Backs...

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | December 4, 2008 10:28 AM | Report abuse

Has Nylander played RW before?

Should be interesting to see Keith Aucoin since he's tearing up the AHL, but only if he gets decent playing time and isn't stuck on the 4th line. This is why it's so difficult to make the NHL. Even if you have shown that you're a very good offensive player in the AHL when you get called up usually get stuck on the 4th line with a couple of bums and 5 minutes of ice time.

ovys8, according to nhlscap.com, Oskar NHL contract is in the 850K range, way above Mink's 500K and Aucoin's 487K

Aucoin is a good move.
He's got NHL experience playing with the Canes last year.
This gives another Bear a shot to step up - on a first place team, surely one of them will.

2nd line center Brooks or Aucoin?

Posted by: Steve_R | December 4, 2008 10:41 AM | Report abuse

Lee, you want to join me 12/10 Boston game? It's a Weds.

Posted by: Steve_R | December 4, 2008 10:42 AM | Report abuse

Please, please, please let him wear #37. Someone needs to sully that number before it hits the rafters.

@Steve_R

aucoin according to corey.. laich is down on the 3rd line with gordon and fehr

oldtimehockey, I'll let you know what # Aucoin is listed as wearing when the game notes are sent out this afternoon.

Posted by: RedBirdie | December 4, 2008 10:47 AM | Report abuse

That's funny. I just watched Boudreau's last interview posted on the Caps site and he said exactly the same thing about guys who get called up... how they usually get stuck on the 4th line with 5 minutes of playing time. Pretty much word for word.

Who's the kid reporter, btw? Is that Bruce's grandson? That was a great little video where he did interviews with a bunch of Caps. The kid is a pro!

Posted by: ranndino | December 4, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

Looks like they're rotating Bears into the line-up and giving them all a taste of the NHL. Getting 'em hungry for more. Sending a message that even though you have a bigger contract (Osala), you're not a given for the job.

Good motivation for all of them.

Posted by: Greg S. | December 4, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

It says on the Caps site that Aucoin will be wearing #20.

Glad to see that he'll get a chance to center the 2nd line... possibly. Although looking at his last season NHL numbers they're not particularly impressive. Still not bad for a guy who was never drafted and played NCAA Div III hockey to get a whiff of the NHL.

Can't do a weds. Thanks though.

Im throwing hot dogs on the ice every time the Islanders score. Just the dog..the bun will catch wind and never make it.

Posted by: SA-Town | December 4, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

I like moving up Aucoin. It is great to give these young guys a shot at the NHL, but when you end up with a bunch of them in the line up i beleive it is counter productive. Aucoin has good NHL expirence and should help since expirence is what half the roster has lacked the last week or two

Posted by: UMWHockey | December 4, 2008 10:54 AM | Report abuse

koalatek.. thanks for the $$ figures.. it really sucks how close to the cap we are..

Thanks Redbirdie. You get them mailed to you? I usually pick them up in the JW club or my seat before the game. How did you managed to get them mailed to you?

Jordan

I hope you are wrong or that you are right! I hope you are wrong and Nylander will accept a trade to Chicago where he still owns a house or that you are right and at some point he will actually "PLAY HERE"! At this point he is doing little more than taking up space on the ice or bench. Tuesday was one of the worst games he's played and that after a game where he had a breakaway and would not shoot.

And Brash needs to get in an F-ing fight! Its the only thing he is doing well right now, crap at least get some energy on the ice!

While we have anyone on LTIR, we make no "space" under the cap. As in right now, we are at 100% of it, with permission to spend over 100% to cover injured guys contracts.

Example. Say Cap is 50M. Say we are at 49. If we had just 1 injury to a guy making 2M and need to place him on IR. We have 2 options.
1)Replace him with someone for 1M or less, and not claim LTIR, while any savings under the cap goes to our daily average to be used later in the year.
2) Replace him with someone who costs more than 1M. Claim LTIR for 2M player and we can replace player with someone of equal or lesser value. (if lesser value is less than 1M, then no LTIR is necessary).

I have up to 8 seats behind the penalty box tonight in 111 Row C for $55 each

Let me know if you are interested

Posted by: DCSPORTS | December 4, 2008 11:24 AM | Report abuse

Nylander on the first line? NO!!!!! I can't take it!!!! Spin move, spin move and turn over!!! However, Back's and OV know how to get open for a pass. It might just work..

Posted by: ashburnpaul | December 4, 2008 11:26 AM | Report abuse

With all this line shuffling, nobody's going to figure out who the hell they are playing with. I understand that with the injuries we have, BB's just screwing around with stuff, but there has to be a point where we realize that we might not get any of these guys back for a long time and start playing with some set lines.

We don't know if Erskine's concussion is as bad as Pothier's was last year.
We don't know if Semin's back is as bad as Fehrs was two years ago.
We don't know if Poti's Groin is as bad as Clark's was last year.
We don't know if Feds' ankle is as bad as Semins was last year.
We don't know if Green's shoulder is as bad as nyls' was last year.

Not trying to freak anyone out here. But the 5 injuries above are non-time-table injuries. Unlike schultz/clark, they'll play when they feel like they can play.

Time to get some line-chemistry and let the boys go.

tess2201 -

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I forgot that people wait till they're 50 to have children in this country.

Posted by: ranndino | December 4, 2008 11:35 AM | Report abuse

Still don't get all the Nylander trashing. Obvioously I haven't seen the last game (once again thanks Versus), but for a bunch of games before that IMO he was one of our best players. Him and Fleisch were really cooking.

Posted by: ranndino | December 4, 2008 11:38 AM | Report abuse

He also turned away from a breakaway against the Blue Jackets to make a pass that accomplished nothing. He's been frustrating.

Posted by: _jordan | December 4, 2008 11:40 AM | Report abuse

oldtimehockey, I don't know! I'm a STH, but up in the 400s. I assume that rather than climb all the way up there and stick the notes on my seat, the caps staff assumes its easier to e-mail them as a pdf for each home game. I quite like it, actually. Gives me a nice excuse to slack off at work around 3pm or so!

I'm with you. 16/92/14 is a great line and should not have been broken up. Feds is the only other guy on the team who protects the puck as well as Nyls. His body placement is superb.

After watching him try to shoot on PP on Tues, I'm fine with him not shooting ;-)

I did, but I have my reasons. If 25 would play every game like we have seen him able to do, I'd put him there. Yes, he's great with it...but it's when he feels like playing.

I'm a huge fan of the style 25/91/92 have with the puck. They are 1-man 87/39/10-15 lines with their ability to control possession of the puck.

Posted by: FFSEnough | December 4, 2008 11:49 AM | Report abuse

The bottom 3 lines look capable. The top line looks awful with Nylander at wing. They're better off with Backis at RW than Nylander who will not work the puck in deep along the boards.

Posted by: cstanton1 | December 4, 2008 12:35 PM | Report abuse

Moving Circles to wing may be to get him and his 30% face-off pct off the dot.

Posted by: chuckatcws | December 4, 2008 1:39 PM | Report abuse

I think we need to call Ray Shero and trade the 'lander for Evgeni Malkin straight up. Or pick up Avery once Dallas cuts him.

Posted by: playahatah | December 4, 2008 3:08 PM | Report abuse

we need a 2 points. we need leadership at the blueline. we need to get back on track before this weekend.
