Backstrom Agrees to Terms With Caps

Although it shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention the past few months, the Caps made it official today -- Nicklas Backstrom, the club's No. 4 overall pick in 2006, has agreed to terms on a three year entry level contract and will be on the team next season.

Backstrom is scheduled to arrive in Washington on Monday to sign the paperwork. There will also be a press conference at that time.

It's a bonus laden deal that could be worth as much as $4 million a year, much like Ovechkin's deal.

Thanks, I noticed that right after I hit publish.

Will Leonsis pay him in free AOL trial discs?

One center down....

that leaves another center, a RW, and 2 Top-4 Defensemen still to go.

Great news. Cap fans, however, should have no illusions that he is going to have the same impact that Crosby and Malkin did in their first season in the NHL. I think it is going to take him a season or two to adjust to the North American game and to become an elite NHL center. Hopefully, the Caps will sign another top line center to take the pressure off him.

Awesome news. Know how to make the day even better: Scott Gomez to say he wants to play with Ovie.

(and the sabres get swept would be nice)

I just hope the team improves, I wouldn't want to see another young players hopes of winning dashed.

If you check the Hockey Futures message board, Backstrom is already viewed as the favorite to win next season's Rookie of the Year Award. Can't wait to see this kid in action.

Tarik,

any chance of Backstrom appearing on Wash Post Live?

Posted by: Cush | May 16, 2007 3:19 PM | Report abuse

How can it be like Ovechkin's deal, AO's deal was under the old CBA. I thought under the new CBA a rookie entry contract can only make $900k + $900 in bonuses.

Ovie has a new CBA rookie contract. The limit on the games played bonus is the Paragraph 1 salary. You can also have a bunch of "Exhibit 5" bonuses. If you meet all of them, you get a pretty big bonus. Ovie met a lot of them.

Posted by: tallbear | May 16, 2007 3:37 PM | Report abuse

It's $875,000 in salary (for 2007) plus $850,000 in bonuses. But that's the Schedule A bonuses. They can also get Schedule B bonuses up to $2,000,000. Also, they can get a signing bonus of up to 10% of their salaries.

BYW, how many goats will Backstrom be bringing?

Posted by: norske | May 16, 2007 3:47 PM | Report abuse

He was drafted in 04. Wouldn't that put him under the old CBA?

Posted by: Chris | May 16, 2007 3:47 PM | Report abuse

Oops, I made an error there. It's $875,000 for players drafted in 2007, not signed in 2007. Since Backstrom was drafted in 2006, he has a maximum salary of $850,000.

Posted by: norske | May 16, 2007 3:49 PM | Report abuse

I don't think any '04 draftees (like AO) were signed until AFTER the lockout, due to the uncertainty of the CBA.

"He was drafted in 04. Wouldn't that put him under the old CBA?"

Assuming you're talking about Ovechkin there, he was drafted under the old CBA, but signed under the new CBA. The new CBA contains provisions allowing for higher entry level salaries and signing bonuses for players drafted in 2004 to reflect the difference between the two agreements, but the new CBA governs.

This is great news. I missed his performance in the World's how did he do overall?

Agree with an earlier poster, RW, another C, and two top D are still on the list.

lets hope they do end up paying him 4 mil next year, that would put us in the playoffs

Great news. I'm ready for training camp.

great addition and i hope he lives up to some of the hype. did he play in the world championships and how did he do?

Posted by: Pakk | May 16, 2007 4:20 PM | Report abuse

He's not as good as people think. He is too soft (Briere?) and is not ready for the NHL.

Posted by: DoOrDie | May 16, 2007 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Who says he's not ready? Every scouting report I've seen said he was ready to come over last season and he's only gotten better playing in a very good Swedish Elite League where he led his team in scoring as a 19 year-old. As for being soft like Briere, I think good old Danny Boy has had himself a nice little NHL career without being a big hitter.

I'm sure backstrom will look great in the new uniforms-These were leaked on the web today-they're probably fake but who cares-its all good

doordie, don't mean to bust on you, but how much scouting have you done in the swedish elite league? you have no idea how whether he's soft or not. and briere was a first team all star this year. i hope he is like brier without the wussy spearing issue.

and those uni's are fake. i fell for it too.

anybody know if the press conference is open to the public?

Posted by: KCK | May 16, 2007 5:38 PM | Report abuse

That jersey was designed by a guy on the Caps message boards. He never intended to pretend they were real, he just did it for fun, and he has now spent a lot of time debunking the story that these are the real jerseys. But for some reason, this design has gone all around the internet. They are not real.

the presser is at Kettler and not open to the public. This is what Vogs said on Caps Report yestereday.

i like those jerseys, if they arent better than the fake ones that will suck

Posted by: Anonymous | May 17, 2007 4:47 PM | Report abuse

I've watched a few games from the swedish elite league. I've also seen him play and I can tell you this much... he ain't a bigg hitter! But, he sure can take a hit and he's very skilled at avoiding them.

Posted by: floorme | May 18, 2007 4:59 AM | Report abuse

excellent news. Tarik, do you know if he will be attending the rookie camp this year? If Backstrom goes, I'm probably going to head up to take a look. He'll look good on the second line with Semin. Bye Beech!
