Backstrom Improving, Won't Skate Tomorrow

Center Nicklas Backstrom (sprained right ankle) won't participate tomorrow, but he should be on the ice at some point next week, according to Coach Bruce Boudreau.

"He could [skate tomorrow] but we want to be overly cautious," Boudreau said. "This is still September. Those ankles are such a weird injury. Even though it was never a high ankle sprain, or anything like that, we still want to be cautious. We'll probably see him by the end of the week, but he probably won't participate in the scrimmages [next] week."

Waow, the team is very careful when it comes to Nicklas..

Tarik, I saw that three minor moves have already been done, any word if the rest of the players from rookie camp will be in the training camp?
Or will we see a couple of more moves tonight before training camp starts tomorrow?

Posted by: Gavlegirl | September 19, 2008 10:59 AM | Report abuse

I like the fact they are being careful with him. Don't want to push it too hard and reinjure it - missing the opener.

Posted by: JP | September 19, 2008 11:04 AM | Report abuse

Let him ride the pine! :-)

Posted by: Dave King | September 19, 2008 11:09 AM | Report abuse

Tarik - are any of the guys practicing today?

Posted by: Arlington, VA | September 19, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

Nonsense, just make this lazy bum skate suicides! It's the best way to whip that wobbly ankle back into shape.

Hmm.. do the Caps have a warranty on these faulty Swedes? Nylander's shoulder, Gus's back, Backstrom's ankle.. where's the quality control at the meatball factory? Caps' fans demand answers!

Jokes aside, looks like the Caps have really rolled the dice on Gustafsson. Even if he does fully heal, these kinds of health problems can really hamper development.

Posted by: Vlad | September 19, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

GOOD! I'm with JP; I'd rather they be careful with him now than krisk him missing the season opener. If he has to sit out the pre-season too, so be it. As long as he's healthy and on the ice the night the puck drops on the regular season, I'm good with that.

Jschon, I like the "Cause I said so" one. Nough said, get him a sweater.

Gavlegirl,
All the guys that are playing junior this season will leave, (i.e. Carlson, Holtby, Mestery, Della Rovere, Broda, & Leffler)

Flyers blogger reported that Semin, Green and Ovechkin were in attendance yesterday at the rookies game. Anybody saw them in a crowd?

Posted by: Dave King | September 19, 2008 11:45 AM | Report abuse

They were all there.

Posted by: JSchon | September 19, 2008 11:55 AM | Report abuse

A lot of big-team guys were watching the game...

I saw Clark, Laich, Gordon, Brashear, Bradley, Green, OV, Erskine + daughter, Schultz, Semin and Fehr. They were all on the end corner watching.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:01 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin was definately there, they interveiwed him postgame.

"Satan eyes vacancy on Penguins' No. 1 line"
I know that's his name and its not pronounced that way, but it merits a few "Penguins sold their soul to the devil for the Cup" jokes

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | September 19, 2008 12:11 PM | Report abuse

jmu_capsgirl, maybe Miroslav gets his wish and we can write "Satan is Crosby's wingman" headlines.

Posted by: tallbear | September 19, 2008 12:16 PM | Report abuse

Glad to hear that they are letting Backs heal - better to be out now than when we need points.

94:
I don't think that we were at the same game (or maybe the guys were playing differently on opposite ends of the ice). I saw Alzner have some heavy hits as early as right after the first puck dropped. He came out hard. Granted, I also saw him let someone crowd the crease for far too long - he should have cleared that guy. But he slammed someone into the glass by me a number of times. Regarding Carlson, I thought he played much better earlier this summer. He didn't seem as intense this time. He still played well, but I didn't think he shined like he did last time.

Posted by: Boo! | September 19, 2008 12:21 PM | Report abuse

@Boo!

94, my boy Rog, definitely has something out for Alzner, its borderline hatred and/or jealousy.

Now, I agree that Alzner did nothing yesterday to wow the crowd or even stand out, but that aint his game.

I thought Carlson was very solid, poke checking and throwing his body around, never saw his hard slapshot, but he has it. He is only 18 and he is going to be a top 4 blueliner for sure.

These one-year contracts will catch up with them sooner then later, especially in a town like Pittsburgh where they have nothing to do but wait for players to show up on their front porch with tickets.

Most 'Burghers can't afford to keep spending their hard earned, coal-shoveling bucks to update their formal, Sunday best whenever a family member leaves for Detroit anyway so Satan jokes would not phase 'em.

That intersection of The Ohio, The Monongahela, and The Allegheny is backwoods Appalachia minus the banjo.

Crosby, yeah whatever...

I never saw the ice girls at Kettler yesterday.

What gives?

No announcement, no appearance, nothing from the beat reporters.

This summer's biggest news and nothing.

Hey folks, ESPN has Jose ranked as goalie # 3, OV as forward #1, Semin as #37 (ahead of Saint Louis at 38), Backs as #78 (more weight to goals than assists), Green as #6 blueliner, and Poti at #47. I thought the fantasy folks might enjoy their rundown. One thing that was consistent was the expectation that the individual would all improve from last year because ESPN's group expects this team to post great numbers. Interesting. Boudreau is being overly cautious with Backstrom's ankle, but put a guy with a herniated disk through "Herbies".

I guess we don't worry about the future at all, do we?

Sometimes the hot girls are in the stands. Take me, Boo, Kim, etc. for instance.

Anyway, just got off the phone with my rep. In a fit of anti-Pens-ism I just spontaneously bought another extra pair of tix for both Pens games. I now have two pairs of extra tix for each Pens game. Not buying 'em for anyone in particular. Just blocking Pens fans.

See y'all at KCI tomorrow!

Posted by: Girl Watcher | September 19, 2008 3:29 PM | Report abuse

Actually, I fail to see why Boudreau should've kept Gustafsson out of Herbies. I'm no doctor, but I don't see how skating hard by itself damages the spine. It's not like he made him stay in front of the net and take punishment to his back.

After all, the kid was about to go back to Sweden and play in a men's league, where he surely would have endured more punishment. Now at least everybody knows that he's got ways to go before his back is strong enough to play.

@To All:
Thanks for all the scouting information - without this board to entertain me through out the days prior to the season, I would never make it. - wish I could have been there.
@Boo - if you want to meet at the Canes game let me know....I believe I will be going to all in NC this season - they won't release tickets to the public, I know it really is a bummer!

I sold my soul to JMU Athletics, so I'm counting on those going to keep us up to date on the goings on and how much better everyone is looking during camp.
I'm hoping the Caps great play yesterday somehow inspires the local football teams tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to angry drunk football fans if App State beats us tomorrow.
Can't wait for the televised hockey to start now!

Why is it that these newbies are so damned accusitorial? In the game commentary yesterday, they mentioned that Semin was in the house along with seemingly half of the big team players. I guess we should finger print and DNA sample everyone so we could be sure. Or better yet, implant a RFID device in all the players so Danny will know where everyone is at all times. And, believe it or not, some people do have their own blogs that they report on, as well as comment here. Simply amazing that people can do more than one thing at a time now adays, isn't it?

Posted by: Greg S. | September 19, 2008 11:32 PM | Report abuse

Greg S, it is amazing. Just the other day I saw a woman driving on 95 that was texting, doing her nails and smoking all at once. She was doing fine with the texting, smoking and nails thing but her driving just plain sucked.

Wasn't there a book entitled "How to Win Friends and Influence People"? These guys need to read that one. Either that or "Every Man's P.R.I.N.C.E."
