Backstrom Named To YoungStars

Snubbed yesterday when the Eastern Conference All-Star Team was named, Nicklas Backstrom received a bit of a consolation prize today when he was chosen for the YoungStars Game for the second straight year.

The NHL announced the team moments ago. Karl Alzner did not make the cut.

Backstrom wasn't definitive yesterday when asked if he would attend the YoungStars Game if chosen. But being that it's in Montreal, I'm thinking he'll go.

There's the token bone for the Caps.

How is David Krejci not in this game?

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Snubs can work to ways,......take the day off Nicky and rest up.

Posted by: RichC3 | January 9, 2009 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Nailed by the dreaded new post syndrome, so from last post:

Wasn't there a story that Columbus was looking to add and their ownership had given the GM the green light to spend away. Maybe Nylander gets on the plane with them tonight after the game for a draft pick or two??

And by the way, Alzner got screwed, along with Green and Backie.

Posted by: PhilR | January 9, 2009 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Isn't the Youngstars game like 3-on-3 or something ridiculous like that? I guess that's why they don't need a bigger roster.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 1:34 PM | Report abuse

No Alzner?! Jesus, now I really am convinced that the Powers That Be in the NHL are smoking something.

Posted by: RedBirdie | January 9, 2009 1:36 PM | Report abuse

We should just dress Brashear in Backstrom's jersey and send him to the youngstars game.

Posted by: SA-Town | January 9, 2009 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Well, they play even less defense in the YoungStars game than the All-Star Game, no wonder Karl didn't make it.

Posted by: koalatek | January 9, 2009 1:41 PM | Report abuse

YAY NICKY!!! That's excellent fun for him, I'm sure. :-) Definitely annoying about Alzner, but I'm not going to argue Backstrom getting in! :-)

Posted by: irockthered | January 9, 2009 1:42 PM | Report abuse

I think Alzner may not have played enough games. He might be eligible next year.

I am amused that the article appears to have gotten the Backstroms confused. Look at the end - it talks about young kids breaking out into dominance, and references Backstrom last season but links to the Wild's goalie.

Okay, either way. I think Nicky should stay home, rest up, and tear up the conference the second half.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 9, 2009 1:45 PM | Report abuse

We know that Karl is going to be a star here in DC, but also understand that his style of play is the kind that you *shouldn't* hear much about him. Casual hockey fans want to see defensemen like Greener, not defensemen who's job is to make the game boring for the opposing fans.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 1:47 PM | Report abuse

To be fair, the YoungStars game can only allow one player per team to participate...

Posted by: Section117 | January 9, 2009 1:47 PM | Report abuse

The YS game is a joke. Isn't it like 3 on 3. I've seen pick-up games that have more action.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | January 9, 2009 1:51 PM | Report abuse

I think this is the ultimate insult, he's being offered a JV spot when he is clearly VARSITY. Their telling him to swim in the baby pool and he's proven he is one of the best in deep water...

STAY HOME NICK!!!

Posted by: WTF_Fehr | January 9, 2009 1:52 PM | Report abuse

JMU, I'm with you on your sentiments, although with the way some fans around here act makes you wonder if he'll be treated similar to Schultz

Posted by: superpaqman | January 9, 2009 1:54 PM | Report abuse

OTH, yep. I also remember it being really short.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 1:57 PM | Report abuse

other than the skills comp, the all star/young stars games are worthless. Sutherby was in the young stars game once.

Posted by: oo7 | January 9, 2009 1:57 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't worry about how much energy Nick is going to expend at the YSG. It'll probably be easier than a BB practice.

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 1:59 PM | Report abuse

superpaqman, Yeah, although Karl is *much* cooler than Schultz. His personality alone makes people like him. Who else would be excited about going grocery shopping in DC?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom should stay home, he needs more seasoning.

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 2:01 PM | Report abuse

Jschon, I think 19 is sufficiently seasoned. His grit and knick-knacks could use some development, though.

Posted by: redlineblue | January 9, 2009 2:06 PM | Report abuse

_jordan, I think he just needs to hang out with the Alexes. Pick up some Russian. Then he won't have to drop the F-bomb. He'll have much more imaginative things to say. :-D

"I think this is the ultimate insult, he's being offered a JV spot when he is clearly VARSITY. "

DITTO! That is a bunch of crap. I wouldn't play based on principle, also, to protest the all-star selection.

Posted by: ejohnsto | January 9, 2009 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: WTF_Fehr | January 9, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

I stand corrected, 19 does need more We resigned Erskine in his life.

BTW...

Yes the selection process for the ASG is flawed. Yes Tomas Kaberle is a 3 time all-star, but before you automatically say, system flawed, he also played with Mats Sundin for all his years in TOR. So throw your 1 representative from each team out the window. Sundin and Kaberle both from TOR both have played on 3 AST together.

Re: Backstrom and the YoungStars game... I would not refuse to play, and I'll tell you why.

Reputation.

SOMEONE, somewhere will decide that Nick Backstrom is a prima donna who needs his beauty sleep, and will make a huge, ugly deal over it, and our young Swede will be marked as a prima donna for life, like Crosby is marked as a whiner.

Now, I'm not saying Crosby *isn't* a whiner, and Backstrom is definitely NOT a prima donna... I wouldn't believe him to be, even if he did turn down the YoungStars invitation. But people have a way of sticking someone with a label, usually an uncomplimentary one, and having that label follow the person stuck with it around like glue. And I, for one, would be most annoyed if a nasty label got stuck on an otherwise really talented young man.

Let him play in the YoungStars game and let him kick behind and take names, and score the only goal for our side, and win the day in spectacular fashion. THEN let someone say something uncomplimentary about our Nicky. Let someone TRY.

Posted by: irockthered | January 9, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

I might be trying to see things that aren't there, being the superstitious sort, but weren't Luongo and Brodeur the only two guys to turn down the ASG last year? (Luongo I believe because his wife was due around then & Brodeur because...?) Are they not both on LTIR this season? Just saying. Bettman might get angry.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 2:28 PM | Report abuse

Only in '02 did Kaberle attend the ASG with Mats or another Toronto player.

Seems in '02 several teams had mulitple players there. Perhaps because it was a World vs. NA game.

Posted by: AleksanderOMunchkin | January 9, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

irockthered

I think he's getting the flu bug that week...such a shame.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

Agree with irocktheread that if Backstrom refuses the dubious honour, someone will raise a stink about it and label him as being too big for his britches, or un-sportmanslike or un-Canadian, or something. And the same Montreal fans who made it impossible for him (or Green or Semin) to join the ASG, will jump on the bandwagon. It's almost a no-win situation: go and play below your weight-class, or don't go and get bad-mouthed. Not a total loss though: according to Ovi, the point of the whole thing is to hang out with some good players and party in Montreal!

Posted by: RedRocker1 | January 9, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

King Karl reminds me alot about how Langway played as far as stick positioning, body positioning, and smarts, the only thing Langway did more of was physical part.Long live the "King"!!!!!

Rock the Red tonight!
Big Week-end guys, first things first, then lets show some Montreal fans some of the real ALL-STARS!

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | January 9, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom not going is silly. It's a good time to hang with Ovie, and represent the team. Montreal is a great city. There will be fun dinners and parties and a chance for him to meet legends and celeb's in the hockey world left and right.

It's a MUST to attend, and Im sure he will.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 9, 2009 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Last year, didn't Backstrom and the Thrashers' young Swede stay out late at some concert? He'll go for the parties at least.

Posted by: koalatek | January 9, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

Why wouldn't Backstrom go? Planning on sitting at home and watching The Office or something rather than hitting up Montreal?

Posted by: Stu_c | January 9, 2009 3:13 PM | Report abuse

The YS game is a snoozer. 3 on 3, sometimes without enough goalies. I've seen pick-up games at Kettler with more pizzaz. Its great that Nicky got the nod and he should go, but the odds that I watch it are very low.

Posted by: oldtimehockey | January 9, 2009 3:15 PM | Report abuse

I am absloutely baffled about the schedule.

Can someone give me a rundown of the last 21 games? Who they play? How many times? And if it looks good to make a stretch run?

Re: man-games lost - A few days ago, someone asked how many man-games the Caps had lost to injury this season. I have that information at my fingertips now, thanks to the Game Notes I just got. The answer is 211.

Posted by: irockthered | January 9, 2009 3:22 PM | Report abuse

Did I see Stamkos' name in the mix? How is it possible that a guy with a whopping 14 points, and a terrific -11 +/- is considered a star. I know that he was a number 1 pick, and might be a star in the future, but how does the league justify that?

Posted by: sct112 | January 9, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

This years young stars game is 5 on 5. Sophmores against rookies. all the sophmores I believe where in the game last year except Kane who made the All-star team. Remember this all-star stuff does not happen next year because of the olympics. Here is the roster.

NHL SOPHOMORES

Goaltender
Erik Ersberg, Los Angeles Kings

Defensemen
Marc Staal, New York Rangers
Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins

Forwards
Bryan Little, Atlanta Thrashers
Milan Lucic, Boston Bruins
Andrew Cogliano, Edmonton Oilers
Brandon Dubinsky, New York Rangers
Devin Setoguchi, San Jose Sharks
Mason Raymond, Vancouver Canucks
Nicklas Backstrom, Washington Capitals

NHL ROOKIES

Goaltender
Steve Mason, Columbus Blue Jackets

Defensemen
Drew Doughty, Los Angeles Kings
Luke Schenn, Toronto Maple Leafs

Forwards
Blake Wheeler, Boston Bruins
Kris Versteeg, Chicago Blackhawks
James Neal, Dallas Stars
Michael Frolik, Florida Panthers
Mikkel Boedker, Phoenix Coyotes
Patrik Berglund, St. Louis Blues
Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning

Just exactly how long are they planning this game to run? There are only two D-men per team here... I can't imagine playing a full game with only two D... are they daft?!

Posted by: irockthered | January 9, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

@jmu

Yes..In fact..Nick and Ovie should take me along with them...I will have the parties all planned out for them.

I would even give Lucic a good solid facewash from behind during the team dinner. Let him know Caps fans are for real.

Posted by: SA-Town | January 9, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

numero94

Don't egg him on...

As to going/not going to the ASG-lite. I can think of a few good reasons not to go.

Have a push for the second half of the season to get through. A week off with no distractions will have him well rested.

There would be no way for him to get injured at the game.

Ovechkin will teach him bad habits off the ice - just kidding.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 9, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Boo,
No word on Kaberle from my cuz so I had assumed any trade would be for picks.
However, if you throw Mo in and his $1.9m contract, that more than covers Alzner and we swap an underperforming centre (who is currently a healthy scratch) for an All Star Dman.

Schultz - Green
Poti - Kaberle
Alzner - Jurcina

Forwards as per tonight lineup, although I would prefer Fehr in for Clarke.

Nicky will go to Montreal, the Canadian media would string him up if he refused. Plus he is on a team with other sophomores so its hardly like he's the sole teenager sat at the kids table at Christmas. Plus he'll be able to paint the town RED with Ovie.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 9, 2009 3:47 PM | Report abuse

Just 20 wins over the 2nd half of this season would give us 97 points, which would have been good for 5th place in the Eastern Conference last year (among non-division winners). Pittsburgh (the 10th place team in the East this year) currently has 20 wins. Last year, only Montreal and Pittsburgh had 47 wins in the East.

27 wins over the 2nd half would give us 111 points. Only Detroit (115) had more points last season.

30 wins (the current pace of Boston) would give us a minimum of 117 points.

Whatever we do, Carolina has to have at least 5 more wins than us to knock us out of the division lead.

Has anyone looked at the second half of our schedule recently?

The KHL team Avangard Omsk fired it's coach Wayne Fleming at the end of the second period of a hockey game.

Very classy.

i would like to know where cheef is. i guess winning 9 of 10 with a hot goalie and developing prospects has caused his keyboard to lock up. takes a real man to kick a team when they are down but disappear when it becomes even more obvious that he has no idea what he's talking about.

I have lost interest in the ASG. It has gone down hill over there years and I tend to find it uninteresting. I never really watched the game itself, but I really liked the night before and the Skills competition, Old Stars game, etc... For some reason, it just isn't as fun to watch as 10 years ago. Don't really care for the trick penalty shot deal to keep up with the NBA's dunk competition.

I think I am becoming more and more like George Costanza everyday.

Your TV probably has a QAM tuner if you can put in a 'dot' or 'dash' in the channel number... like 122-4001.

The QAM channel on FiOS for CSN+ is 122-4001, at least in Anne Arundel and Howard Counties in MD.
