Backstrom Sprains Ankle

Nicklas Backstrom suffered a sprained ankle yesterday when he collided with the goal, General Manager George McPhee confirmed moments ago. Backstrom stayed down for a few seconds, then skated off the rink gingerly.

Backstrom was seen walking with a pretty pronounced limp later in the day and he didn't skate this morning. McPhee also said it's unclear whether the first line center will be ready for the start of camp, which begins next Saturday. With the season still a month away, the team is going to take a cautious approach, McPhee said.

We'll probably know more in a few days after some of the swelling goes down.

He'll be fine in 2 weeks.

"Collided with the goal," huh? Not good news, but at least it's only a sprain. Could be worse. He may be ready to go by early to mid-camp.

Not of the high ankle type?

I hope this is not an ominous sign for lil nicky's sophomore campaign

His center of gravity must have changed!!! :)

Better now than later.

Are they sure its swelling from spraining it or it the newly acquired cankles from all the weight he put on :)

Posted by: WhooHoo | September 12, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

Hopefully he's fine in 2 weeks but it took Semin a while to shake his ankle sprain last year

Usually the guys don't get hurt until they hit the crappy ice at Vz Center.

It has to be a "high" sprian. Its pretty close to impossible to sprain the lower part while wearing skates. Could also be a bruise/partial dislocation, etc., depending on the nature of the collission.

Semin! Semin! Semin! Where is Semin? Angst! Angst! Angst! Green! Green! Green! Where is Mikey? Angst! Angst! Angst!

I guess A Caps preseason without an ankle sprain is like Oktoberfest without beer. Unimaginable.

Well, it seems that Nylander is going to get his chance with Ovechkin..

We're still just under a month until opening night, it sounds like Backie's ankle will be by then, if he's not up to first line duties on opening night bfd, as Nick said it's nice to have 3 quality centers.

You got an injury update from GMGM??!!!! Wow Tarik, life is looking up on the beat huh?

Posted by: virtueandvice | September 12, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Is it official that Backstrom is the first line center? I'd rather see him on a second line with Semin.

Posted by: King | September 12, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

didnt this happen with Semin last year? and he ended up missing have the season? Cripes!

Posted by: sean | September 12, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

I think it was 19 games Sean.

Posted by: Steve R | September 12, 2008 1:43 PM | Report abuse

See? Never hurt to have 3 good centers in case like this. Backis might miss a couple of months.

Posted by: King | September 12, 2008 1:44 PM | Report abuse

I we sure it is an ankle sprain and not a leg injury to his upbody...GMGM gave away a lot of information there.......

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2008 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Nooo!!! Backstrom's hurt?!? We need Green in here now, a week before he's supposed to be here, before it's too late!!!

I agree...well the hell is Green

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2008 2:07 PM | Report abuse

Now you can see how smart Semin is. His ankle is in good health and he is still eating his ethnic russian food deep down in Siberia.

Backis is not alone...

Nikita Filatov will not take part in the Traverse City prospects tournament because of a leg injury. The Blue Jackets say he will miss 10 to 14 days, meaning he'll likely be out for the start of veteran camp on Sept. 20, too.

"Nikita has an old injury that is bothering him, so he will not accompany our rookie team to Traverse City for the NHL Prospects Tournament," GM Scott Howson said, in a statement released by the club. "He’ll rehab the injury here and be re-evaluated in the next 10 days to two weeks."

Vogel said the Traverse City tournament will be shown on NHL TV channel.

Actually since Backstrom is a pro hockey player and does not wear figure skates it is possible to sprain an ankle, rather than a high ankle. Pro hockey players, as opposed to beer league players wear their skates very loose so that they can turn quicker, so ankles can sprain. By the way I am not a doctor, I just play one on a hockey blog.

Posted by: Bob | September 12, 2008 2:31 PM | Report abuse

You are obviously not a hockey player either. Pro players don't wear skates "very loose".

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2008 3:13 PM | Report abuse

OK...Not good for Backstrom. On the bright side, he can still work out his upper body, and try to get some much needed bulk and size up top.

Posted by: SA-Town | September 12, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

No need to freak out. We have 3 top centers. I hope they don't bring him back too early like Semin last year. His was a sprained ankle , too, wasn't it? And he wasn't right until Jan, it seems to me. So, better be safe than sorry. Makes it harder to make the cuts that may be needed, but so be it. But would be nice to have all our talent early into reg season play. I'd love to come out like gang busters which we can if we have all our top guys!

Posted by: Caps Fan | September 12, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

I saw Green in The Mint Restaurant in Raleigh with Eric Staal and Joe Corvo. He was chowing down on some Beef Tartare. Looks like he's defecting to the Canes. What are we gonna do?!!

Posted by: Green Stalker | September 12, 2008 3:43 PM | Report abuse

Interestingly, I beleive Backstrom can be sent to Hershey w/o going through waivers, so if he does end up being injured to start the season, he can be sent down as cap relief.

Seriously sucks though - Semin was pushed into the back of the net and sprained his ankle last year - what's with the bad luck around goals?

Posted by: Stormblue | September 12, 2008 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Where is Federov? The nerve of that guy to not be here!!!!! And where is Laich? JEEEZZZ!!

"Caps have to trade Nylander. There's not enough room under the cap"

That's why (good) teams don't do kneejerk moves in the middle of summer. You never know when something weird might happen. Right now, Capsfan would be freaking out if they had dealt Nyles...

Posted by: pga3 | September 12, 2008 3:57 PM | Report abuse

@ Anonymous

They were both @ the Mint in Raleigh with Green, Staal and Corvo. I overheard Semin might be flying in early from overseas to join them plus Rod Brind'Amour for dinner tomorrow night at Gianni's. The Canes are going to steal all our good players!! OMG I'M FREAKING OUT!!!

Posted by: Green Stalker | September 12, 2008 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Who is Federov?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2008 4:04 PM | Report abuse

"You are obviously not a hockey player either. Pro players don't wear skates "very loose"."

Teemu Selanne, for one, wears his skates very loosley and I believe suffered a greater injury because he was wearing them that way. I think there are plenty of pros out there who don't lace up tightly. I, personally, don't know how they can do it.

Feder Federov is Karamazov's brother.

I think yellow laces are pretty common in Russia.

I can believe that they are retiring Roy's number, I just can't believe that they are retiring it this soon after all of that drama last season.

Posted by: Boo! | September 12, 2008 5:06 PM | Report abuse

Boo! I think you're not correct. BTW, the first guy with yellow shoe laces was Nick Lidstrom, way back in Russian 5 days.

I always thought yellow laces meant they were waxed...I proved my own theory wrong when i stopped by the proshop today and noticed they had white laces that were waxed. I think it's just personal preference.
Same goes with how tight you wear your skates...some people like em loose, some really tight. I, for one, like them loose. i leave the top eyelet open, giving me more range of motion in the ankle. whereas i see some people lace em up all the way AND wrap tape around the ankle on the outside of the skate. All depends on what ya like.

OMG, can u imagine if they gad traded Nylander? GMGM would have to hire a bodyguard like the secret service.

But you know, they never said they were thinking of doing....just somebloggers.

It's hard to think that they woudl not be expecting some injuries to top 6 players. That's why we have 7 who can play top 6!!!!!

Thank goodness.

I have the 6th sense that something is happening with Ferorov? Nobody talking about when he is coming/where he is?

I could care less if he comes back because somehow I feel ike he will be a disappointmnet this year

You'll all call me out on this, but I don't have these premonitions too often, but have to say, when I do, they always happen. Just had to share that.

Met Alzner and Fehr tonight at the rookie STH orientation. Asked Fehr about the Jersey number change and if he made Flash pay for 14. He just kind of laughed and said he always liked 16 anyway and flash asked for 14 so it was no big deal. Said 16 was his number in Juniors so hopefully it will "bring some luck". I said something like we can expect those 50 goal seasons follow the number 16 and he laughed and said "yeah that's the idea".

Sombrero Guy, I was there too -- which one were you? I was the one in the red Capitals T-shirt. :P Just got back home; Metro was slower than heck. Had two 15 minute delays waiting for a train to arrive.

Actually the friend that I brought was the winner of the 1st raffle prize after the Q&A session. Maybe that's a better clue as to who I was? I did not see any sombreros.......

Posted by: Greg from Annapolis | September 13, 2008 12:20 AM | Report abuse

Geez - what is it with y'all. As long as Green, Laich, Federov, and Semin show up in shape and ready to play at the OFFICIAL Start of Camp, that's all that matters. As for Backstrom's injury lets not turn into Redskins fans who get sick and can't eat for a week after a loss or bad thing happens - let's just be glad we are so rich at the Center Ice position right now that he doesn't need to be rushed back before he is ready.

Posted by: Usually Frustrated Caps Fan | September 13, 2008 1:59 AM | Report abuse

I agree with Frustrated Caps Fan. No need to panic: we'll be great with everyone healthy but still decent with one or two out from time to time. Let him heal. He has to be very frustrated but hope he doesn't push himself to come back too soon.

@Greg From Naptown

I choked with my planning and packing last night. Left my skates and sombrero home accidentally. I was sitting to the far left side and won one of the prize packs, which ended up being a portfolio and organizer with caps logos on it. I'll be easier to spot at the games though

@ Sombrero:
Cool, I'm in Section 413. Also if you saw the guy last night that looked like he forgot to shave, that was probably me. I'm trying to think of a clever way to get my contact info to the regulars on this blog without getting that same info to the whole world. ;)

@ CapsCorndog
Yes Mike Green is back, I rode up the elevator with him on my way to the STH Orientation last night. I was too starstruck to introduce myself, but yes he is certainly back.
