Backstrom To Wear No. 19

I forgot to mention that little detail yesterday. It's the number he's worn forever, I'm told. Why? No one with the Caps knows if there's any significance to it, but I aim to find out when I meet him for the first time on Monday.

So, for fun, I looked up all the players who have worn No. 19 for the Caps. And I think it's petty safe to say Backstrom should become the best No. 19 in franchise history.

Here they are, in order:
Pete Laframboise, 1974-75
Jack Lynch, 1975
Bob Gryp, 1975-76
Steve Self, 1976-77
Bryan Watson, 1976-77
Chuck Arnason, 1978-79
Paul MacKinnon, 1979-82
Ken Houston, 1982-83
Peter Anderson, 1983-86
Greg Smith, 1986-88
John Druce, 1988-92
Pat Elynuik, 1992-93
Enrico Ciccone 1993-94
Brendan Witt, 1995-06

Yes, it's another slow day on the Caps beat.

You telling me Witt's number wont be retired!!!!!! I am Shocked!

Wow Pat Elynuik's name brings back memories of his rather lameness. 19s a good number I guess...will a bit strange at first because of Witt wearing it so long.

Jurcina was wearing 68 in the WCs like he did in Boston. What better to get rid of the Jagr-era by another player wearing that number. So I wonder if someone in the caps organization is not allowing the number to be used.

So are they doing a jersey pullover ceremony for the signing press conference? Are they using the old jersey?

Posted by: tallbear | May 17, 2007 3:31 PM | Report abuse

the new jersey will not debut until June 22 at the draft.

Yeah, this was my curiosity as well.
I figured they won't use the new jersey, but, why use the old one????
They could actually use this to spark interest in the new one if done right.
I guess Uncle Ted is someone who might actually get that...we'll see.

Posted by: Mark Tucker | May 17, 2007 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Darn. That seems kind of silly, "Here's a jersey to wear for the cameras, but it's the last time you'll see this model."

I'm surprised they've actually kept the lid on what the new threads look like. No website miscues or anything.

Wow, Witt was with the team for 11 years?

Backstrom probably won't be the thoughest #19 on the team ever, but he will have the best offensive numbers for sure, unless he's a total flameout.

Posted by: EricS | May 17, 2007 4:06 PM | Report abuse

there are some mock ups on some of the boards... the AOL Caps board as well as the HFS board....

Posted by: jeff | May 17, 2007 4:09 PM | Report abuse

john druce killed it in the playoffs....straight up baller that year. :)

Posted by: what | May 17, 2007 4:09 PM | Report abuse

I scored 14 goals in the Playoffs and led my team further than it had ever been. Let him top that first!

Posted by: JohnDruce | May 17, 2007 4:15 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom wore #19 in the 2007 IIHF World Championships that just finished up this past weekend.

Posted by: Gustafsson | May 17, 2007 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Stranger than a new #19 for the Caps, IMO, was seeing a #6 on the ice that wasn't Calle Johansson when Jamie Heward was here.

Posted by: OrderedChaos | May 17, 2007 4:50 PM | Report abuse

Who can forget that famous SI cover of
Druce after he tore up the first two rounds of the playoffs with the headline "Druce on the Loose".

Posted by: boor4 | May 17, 2007 4:51 PM | Report abuse

I think Backstrom has a long way to go before he's better than playoff scoring machine John Druce.

I dont have much else for Caps news either...summer plans, and thats it. Slow post-Backstrom day.

Posted by: LB | May 17, 2007 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Speaking of numbers, do the Caps plan on retiring Peter Bondra's number whenever he calls it quits?

Posted by: mac | May 17, 2007 6:44 PM | Report abuse

druce was really good that playoff year and hopefully backstrom can have greater long term success. numbers caps might consider retiring eventually:
6 Calle Johannson - I agree its sad to see Heward wear it so I guess they don't think so highly of him
10 Kelly Miller
12 Peter Bondra
32 Dale Hunter

Posted by: Pakk | May 17, 2007 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Hunter's has already been retired. They did it a few years ago. Looks really good up in the rafters.

Posted by: EricS | May 17, 2007 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Hey, Bugsy Watson is the best #19 the Caps ever had! Okay...well, maybe not the best. But, he sure was fun to watch.

Posted by: Dezlboy | May 17, 2007 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Ken Houston was an awesome safety. Oh, wait....

I just saw a website that supposedly has a leak of the new uniforms and let me just say they are hideous.....say it ain't so!

Check it our here:

THere are some claims that it is a fake - I hope so.

Tarik - any "insiders" info?

Posted by: JF | May 17, 2007 10:24 PM | Report abuse

It was tough seeing #3 Nycholat but at least he wore it well for 5 games with a few big hits

Posted by: Schottie Schtevens | May 18, 2007 1:22 AM | Report abuse

The Caps can only hope that someday someone will step it up like Druce did that year.
Anybody have a guess on which unheralded forward might go nuts in the '09 playoffs?
I think either Pettinger would be the most equivalent; nobody outside DC knows who he is but he could get hot in a playoff series.
BTW I'd still like to know if the news conference on Monday is open to the public..

Are you serious? Drruuuuuuuuuuuuuucce!

Posted by: IJ | May 18, 2007 4:01 AM | Report abuse

That pic has been everywhere. Vogs even said on the Caps Report that it is a fake and he hasn't seen a picture of the new threads anywhere... and he HAS seen the new duds.

Posted by: Not the new uniforms | May 18, 2007 6:54 AM | Report abuse

I agree, Schottie. You see that #3 and you just think "Jason Doig." Anything else doesn't seem quite right.

Posted by: blanket | May 18, 2007 7:40 AM | Report abuse

The sad thing is that there were worse defensemen on the Caps this year than Jason Doig.

Posted by: Bubba | May 18, 2007 8:10 AM | Report abuse

Eric Fehr will be the Caps' next clutch playoff scorer. Having Pettinger hidden on the Caps' thrid line is pretty cool as well.

Backstrom will look mighty good feeding Semin head man passes. If Backstrom stays healthy and relatively consistent, I think Semin might be able to reach 50 goals. Ovechkin defintiely should.

Posted by: Graham | May 18, 2007 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Ovechkin should probably reach 50 goals, but assuming Backstrom is centering Semin, we still don't know who his C or RW will be.

I agree with what was written elsewhere that, assuming we do pick up another C and RW, a third line of Clark, Gordon, and Pettinger could be pretty nice.

Posted by: blanket | May 18, 2007 11:52 AM | Report abuse

Picking up or promoting a good third liner might be a good strategy, and the Caps could then use Clark on the second line RW.

Ovechkin - Drury/Gomez/Comrie - Fehr (or second tier top 6 RW)
Semin - Backstrom - Clark
Pettinger - Gordon - Sutherby
Brashear - Steckel - Laich

Morrisonn - Hannan
Pothier - Jurcina
Eminger - Rivet

Decent looking line up to me.

Posted by: Graham | May 18, 2007 2:05 PM | Report abuse

That kind of lineup does look pretty decent, but then think about it: that means we're signing Gomez/Drury, Hannan, Rivet, and a second-tier RW (Scott Walker? Fedotenko? Mike Johnson?). That's FOUR pretty big free agent signings, which will really be A LOT of money tied up in four guys. It starts to seem less realistic.

I guess it's just kind of meant as the ideal offseason: all of the perceived holes in the lineup are filled.

Posted by: blanket | May 18, 2007 2:56 PM | Report abuse

yea graham were going to get rivet, hannan and one of either drury, gomez, or comrie. i would think that looks pretty good but its not happening

Posted by: Anonymous | May 18, 2007 4:10 PM | Report abuse

might be hard to get and not very important, but i've got some of the numbers Bäckis has worn, according to

- in Brynäs u18 he wore 22
- in TV-pucken,playing for gästrikland he wore 16
- there's no information about his number in Brynäs, since Brynäs u18 didn't play in the top league that season, and he didn't play in the u20 yet
- in TV-pucken, Gästrikland he wore 19.
- in Brynäs u18 he wore 22
- in Brynäs u20 he wore 16
- in Brynäs u20 he wore 12
- in Brynäs he wore 19
- in Sweden u18 he wore 25
- in Brynäs u20 he wore 22
- in Brynäs he wore 19
- in Sweden u20 he wore 19
- in Sweden he wore 19
2006/07 -
- in Brynäs he wore 19
- in Sweden u20 he wore 19
- in Sweden he wore 19

hey, that's a whole lot of numbers..

but of course, he's number 19 now

Posted by: mac | May 19, 2007 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, its a dream lol. Rivet probably won't be that expensive, Hannan probably will be. But its what we need.

A top center should be a given at this point.

Those are not the new uniforms. They have been debunked so many times.

even though they have been debunked so many buffalo managing partner larry quinn told the buffalo news that the slug now worn was NOT the new uniform....hmmm, guess we'll see.
