Backstrom's Ankle Improving (Updated)

Nicklas Backstrom, who has been nursing a sprained right ankle since last Thursday, skated on his own for about 10 minutes this afternoon and looked pretty good to me.

I also noticed Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin joking around before Backstrom went onto the ice. At one point, the two of them jumped up in the air for a chest bump. Something tells me Backstrom wouldn't have done that if he was still hurting.

Update:Speaking of injuries, 2008 first round draft pick Anton Gustafsson didn't skate today. In fact, he hasn 't been on the ice since aggravating a herniated disc in his back during Sunday's suicides.

--Retread of a few threads ago that didn't make it before this one--

@ All
Thanks for the jersey advice, I'll make use of it soon.

In regard to the game, though, that's not really what I need. I'm 5th in league scoring overall with 38 points, but Hershey has 20 points in 35-40 games, which is good for last place by about 10 points. Whenever I'm not on the ice (and even sometimes when I am), the team completely gives up trying to forecheck or shoot on their own, and gives up the puck time and time again. And, actually, I've discovered that if you do a traditional one-timer (pass and right control stick to shoot, instead of the right bumper), they shoot a lot more quickly than by using the RB button -- but they can't hit the net!

I'm guessing, then, that everyone else is coasting in their Be A Pros? What difficulties are you all? I'm playing All-Star at the moment.

Relevant Comment:
Backstrom sounds like he's fine. I think Tarik's right in that he probably wouldn't have done that if he were really still in pain. Maybe he's playing hoo(c)k(e)y (only one 'o').

when did the vets practice today?

Posted by: Anonymous | September 17, 2008 1:49 PM | Report abuse

(from a previous thread)

No worries - seriously. I didn't think you were directing it at me and, even if you were, oh well! I agree that some people have blinders when it comes to Kolzig, but I also think that a lot of people (still) don't show him the respect that he deserves. (I think I have a pretty balanced perspective of him.) Not that I want to start that debate again ...

Yes, JSchon's "bearded lady" is still worse, as is 94's "mother" comment ... ;-)

The 10/25 game is in Dallas, right? I guess I don't understand your question ...

Would you like every poster here to respond "No"?

OK, I'll start.

Posted by: Jeff | September 17, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse

well that would im sure they did practice and someone will eventually answer.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 17, 2008 2:14 PM | Report abuse

I put myself in the Kings organization so I can play with Dustin Brown and Anze eventually. haha. I'm still on the Monarchs, and the team sucks pretty bad. I had a career game last night with 2 goals and 4 assists, but the team usually ends up giving up goals like crazy when my dude isn't on the ice, and losing by one goal or in the shootout. You should be able to aim the one timers that you feed to your teammates, too. That's how I got most of the 4 assists.

Posted by: Jordan | September 17, 2008 2:20 PM | Report abuse

no idea at this point. I'm trying to figure out if I can get down there for a bit, have to look at the practice schedule and see.

Posted by: Steve R | September 17, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

I guess I would be more inclined to answer a real person rather than "anonymous" if I had any info.

(That being said, I have no info since I'm stuck in an office building in Chevy Chase and nowhere near KCI)

I am playing on Pro, or whatever the default level was, so that might explain my team's success. I have only played 6 games but am 5-1 so far. My team has only scored 3 goals with me off the ice so I understand your frustration.

Oh and something funny, in my friend's be a pro league the CPU traded Ovechkin straight up for Hossa. He wasn't too happy.

I'm a regular reader of the blog, and I know you all post discussions of tickets and so forth... I have 4 great seats in 104, row H (behind where the Caps shoot twice) and I have about 6 weeknight games that I need to get rid of. I only want my season-holder price, $62, down from 80 face, but these sections where the Caps shoot twice are sold out for the season anyway... really great seats, you really the speed...

Anyway, I have weeknight games for 2 Lightning games, 2 Thrashers, and the Kings, Oilers, and Panthers...

Didn't know if it was appropriate to post this sort of thing here... sorry if its not...

Just want to give them to Caps fans

Seriously Lee...

We don't need Schnieder...
We don't need Sykora...
We don't need Sundin...
We don't need Afinogenov...

We are perfectly fine with our roster as is. Bringing another "expensive" veteran with little upside isnt going to a damn thing for us.

I'm actually in the camp that rather than bring another veteran we should unload a veteran to allow the youngsters more of an opportunity to play on the big team.

@Boo! I had no idea you were upset. My bad. These crazy blogs. It wasn't my intention to start bad blood with anyone in here.

We have the Dish Network and live in Front Royal. We have purchased Center Ice 2 years in a row and get all the games (home and away)except the games broadcast on Verses and the major networks. This ususally includes the first 2 rounds of the playoffs as well.

Pokulok was definitely at development camp. He wasn't one of the top five there, but he may have cracked top ten. I only saw the final scrimmage. He's on the roster for vet camp next week. He's been playing in Hershey with stints in SC if I'm not mistaken.

jmu_caps girl: I've had DirecTV and the Center Ice package for about 10 years. Hockey Night in Canada is the best reason to switch -- Don Cherry and Canadian Commercials (much less PC that US-based marketing).

It seems about once a season there is a screw-up and a Caps game gets blacked out for reasons no one can explain but it usually gets fixed before the game gets too far along. Typically, if the Caps game is covered by the local carrier (MASN) then the DirecTV feed is blacked out and the MASN feed is available.. sometimes you have to hunt for the channel (especially last year) but I can tell you that on the whole I've been very happy -- and HD is getting much more prevelant.

Can't say for everyday, but Clark and Johnson have been running non-official practices for a week or so at around 10:00am for about an hour and a half. The Vets do not have to report until the 20th of this month.

Since the kids have the ice now and their practices start at 10am, the Vets have been practicing at 8:00am, again unofficial practice.

And there have only been a handful of people watching the practices and considering this is a blog forum, I doubt anyone there reads or participates in this blog or any other regarding the Capitals.

The practices are free to the public unless you park in the garage, then its the cost of the garage fee.

What else?

Who ever asked about Sasha Pokulok. He spent most of last season in SC because he was bad. I am thinking it was he lacked confidence. He would give away the puck right in front of the net. He was afraid to go into the corners. He looked lost and scared out there. He went down to SC and did pretty well from what I have read so I would have to think he has gotten a little of them confidence issues worked out.

For those that wonder why golf is being spoken on a hockey blog, golf is the second sport of choice for most hockey players. Especially from Pittsburgh!

I usually find it much better to ask politely and wait patiently for the response. Then thank them with sincerity. The results are that people will gladly give you what you need. If no one knows the answer, you won't get a response.

Bashing people usually causes irritation and a reluctance to help - ever.

Actually I find the opposite to be true. I joined in about a year ago and I was welcomed nicely. As long as you are polite, respectful and are willing to offer up good dialogue, everyone is on board. There is a lull at this time of year so not everyone is on the board every moment of the day. If someone had the knowledge, maybe they just weren't on the board when you were.

Questions are welcome and people will answer if they know the answer. If everyone answered "no idea" to every general question thrown out there we'd all be wading through a bunch of meaningless posts to get to something of substance.

Yea, I did miss that fairway. 5 yards left would have been perfect.

Nah, I don't play enough to get a cool handle like "the bandit". Playing soccer a couple of times a week limits me being able to sneak out for golf too.

being a distinguished alumni of JMU class of 06' and know how bad caps coverage is down there. I would be willing to pitch in $5 for jmu_capsgirl to get center ice.

Go Erskine!!!!

They said they would start checking in people with tickets at 1 o'clock and said they had a list if you had lost the email. Get there early for a seat, if you are still at work like me, get there asap and perhaps you stand.
