Bears Promote French

Hershey has promoted assistant Mark French to head coach, the team announced this morning. French replaces Bob Woods, who was promoted to Washington after he guided the Bears to the Calder Cup this spring.

Troy Mann, meanwhile, has been named French's assistant.

As long as he doesnt wear a Beret behind the bench..I'm cool with it.

Not surprised. Good move. Keeps the continuity of BB's 'system'.

Congrats to Mr. French!

Congratulations! This is most excellent news. :-)

Tarik,

On your previous Development Camp post I can only see 23 names listed. Who's missing?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | July 13, 2009 11:43 AM | Report abuse

Ha! Give Backstrom a 25-yr deal with 15 yrs at $7M and ten years at $1M. That's $115M over 25 = cap hit of $4.6M/yr. McPhee's a sharp cookie. If the Flyers can pull one with Pronger, let's us do it with Backstrom.

There is no way in hell the Player's Association is going to let anyone sign a 25 year contract.

@LeftCoast

Suicides are a no-fun drill. Especially for hockey.

BMo is awesome. You guys will see....As for Afinogenov....KEEP HIM OUT OF WASHINGTON UNLESS HE WANTS TO MAKE 500K AND SOME CHANGE PLEASE!

Now my question about Development Camp....where is Dovgan?

BMo is not awesome. He's a speedy smallish player who doesn't play well along the boards and now he's older and coming off 3 or 4 big injuries. Its not out of the question that he's on the downside of his career. Is he an upgrade over Nylander? yeah but thats about it. One can hope that he comes in hungry as hell to prove his injury issues are behind him. But he's not your classic 2 way 2nd line center. He's finesse and speed.

Posted by: cstanton1 | July 13, 2009 12:17 PM | Report abuse

He does play along the boards. And he was basically the only Nuck backchecking in his zone in both of their 2 runs around 03-04.

He also is not coming off any injuries, he played 81 games last season. He only had 1 injured season, the season before that. He came back, lost a step, but still played 81 games. In Dallas, he became the #2 center again and paced about the same as he normally does.

You are right, he is not your classic 2-way 2nd line center, whatever that means, because most of his career he played on the top line.

Lemaire is going to be the Devils coach again?

Freaking great..lets ruin hockey again..yah!

Maybe Dovgan is just going to be at the pro camp? The organization didn't seem too thrilled by him since he had limited time in Hershey last year.

Oh my goodness, the BMo debate continues! BTW, I love the word "smallish" ... for some reason it always makes me laugh. What exactly is smallish, anyway? It seems like it means not big but not small ... wouldn't that be medium?

LeftCoastCapsFan:
Is that a subliminal message for Buffy and Jody?

"smallish" - is NEVER funny
hahaha

@cstanton1 - Didn't your mama teach you that if you can't say something nice, keep your piehole shut? :-p All I ever hear/read from you is all this negativity. I dare you to come up with ONE positive thing to say about BMo. ONE. Bet you can't do it, because you think negative, not positive. And no, "he's an upgrade over Nylander" does not count.

Posted by: irockthered | July 13, 2009 12:38 PM | Report abuse

irockthered:
thats a tall order. if you take out the 'negativity' - what you get is information on the possible downside of things. and sometimes those things are real.
what i would like to see is for nyls to come to camp with a re-newed attitude/commitment to BBs system and a desire to win with this team. it would not bother me to see nyls as the #2 and BMo on the 3rd line. one thing is almost guaranteed - BB will show us 8 to 10 line combos through the first 1/4 of the season. once he figures out the best possible combinations - the rest of the EC better look out. i think their offensive output will surpass last years

I have to say I like that BMo is speedy, if he is the 2nd line center, that works because Semin needs someone that can keep up with him and not do circles.

Posted by: RichC3 | July 13, 2009 1:01 PM | Report abuse

RichC3:
every team has some form of circling (cycling) in the offensive zone to allow their daredevil/stuntman (the caps now have knuble) time to setup camp in front of the net. if nyls can commit to altering his game to more closely fit BBs system - he can be productive as a #2 center. he has the skills to play and is pretty much rested/healed after his 'press box' stint from last year. you can't teach heart or talent - but you can teach your system. if nyls has any desire to be the best he can be (and does not want to leave dc) - the he needs to re-dedicate himselft to BBs system and the rest of the team

Are we talking about the same Brendan Morrison? The one I've seen is pretty decent defensively and an OK penalty killer. I think he ends up on the second or third penalty killing pair, probably with his buddy Knuble

@boo: OMFG! it abso-freakin-lutely was a reference to them. i kept thinking "the butler show, with the two kids, and the young lady". *blush* i didn't think anyone would remember and i never could figure out the name of the show. for some reason "family affair" kept coming up but i'm not sure that's the right show. =)

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | July 13, 2009 1:36 PM | Report abuse

@Boo and LeftCoastCapsFan: We are all showing our age now. We all called the show Buffy and Jody, but it was actually called family affair. When you congratulated Mr. French I swear I was going to ask if Mrs. Beasely was going to get a job in the front office.

Posted by: fanohock1 | July 13, 2009 1:43 PM | Report abuse

I was probably 5 or 6 watching that show and always wished we lived in an apartment like those two kids. Those kids appeared to always be depressed. Any thoughts why they didn't get any psychiatric treatment for their daddy issues? =P

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | July 13, 2009 2:03 PM | Report abuse

I know, how could you be depressed living in a high rise apartment with doors that had knobs in the middle of the door. They were in the middle of the door, how cool is that?

The attitude of the kids might have been their actually personalities though. The girl that played Buffy died of a drug overdose when she was like 17 or 18, kind of sad.
