Blog Maintenance: Comment Outage

Just a quick heads-up: The Capitals Insider will undergo an upgrade today starting around 1 p.m. and lasting an hour or two.

Don't worry about missing any Caps news; Tarik will be able to post, but you will not be able to comment until the upgrade is finished. We'll let you know when that is.

Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for your patience.

Update: The upgrade isn't completely finished, but the comment outage is over. How do you like our new look?

Oh, yeah? Take this comment!

I first read that wrong as "Comments Outrage," and expected to read something about furious blgo posters.

It turns out that the word was "outage," and now I'm outraged. I have outage outrage.

I did say 1 p.m.!

Anything good coming of this upgrade?

Posted by: Semvechkin | March 23, 2009 12:48 PM | Report abuse

@lindey,

I know. I just wanted to be snarky.

Thanks for the work.

Posted by: saintex | March 23, 2009 12:48 PM | Report abuse

or Lindsay...spelling issues.

Posted by: saintex | March 23, 2009 12:49 PM | Report abuse

@saintex - No problem. We like snarky.

@Semvechkin - Many good things, mostly on our side. Biggest thing you'll notice: Tarik's head. It's flipped the other way and about five times larger.

Posted by: Lindsay_Applebaum | March 23, 2009 12:50 PM | Report abuse

Fantastic. I love me some oversized Tarik.

Posted by: Semvechkin | March 23, 2009 12:52 PM | Report abuse

The Flu!? OMG I didnt know it was the flu..Geez i feel so bad now OMG really guys i had no idea its the flu..Is he alright? Did they call in the family? will he ever play again ? I hope they dont try to rush him back! Has he tried chicken soup? I know he loves eggs because one game he went into a corner with eggs in his pockets and didnt break one!

Great. He deserves it, his head is getting bigger.

I share the computer with others, the signers name on this blog does not change with a new signer on the WP. Is that going to be fixed?

Posted by: opita1 | March 23, 2009 1:03 PM | Report abuse

The last two posts were not made by opita1, and neither is this one. See what I mean?

Posted by: opita1 | March 23, 2009 1:05 PM | Report abuse

@ opita1: The outage won't fix that because regristration is mandatory for commenters.

Posted by: Lindsay_Applebaum | March 23, 2009 1:19 PM | Report abuse

I don't think they've gone down yet. One more win and that gives the Caps six straight non-losing months this season. One more win and an OT loss and it's six straight winning months. Not bad.

luvdcaps:
Ironically, the Caps offered flu shots to STHs during a game last season. The locker room was hit by the flu bug then, too ... guess the guys should have run up between periods to get 'em!

So far, two complaints:

Can you make headlines bold? Red on gray is a bit hard to read.

The widget ad is making it impossible to see more than the top post. Could it be moved over to the right with the other ads?

These are minor things. In general, it's swell to have a blog that functions so well.

something tells me sc1907 would call in sick to work with the sniffles. but he's right, brads and semin and others SHOULD risk further injury by playing w/ the flu in a meaningless game against toronto. not to mention they should risk infecting others on the plane flight. you guys are wrong about sc1907, he really is smart.

from Elliot at CNNsi.com, and I agree....

"And it isn't as if Ovechkin's outburst was the first of its kind. The NHL in '80s featured Tiger Williams riding his stick and Bernie Nicholls' overtly demonstrative gesture that became known as the "pumper-nicholl.

For the most part, players put up with those celebratory acts even then. Why? Because Williams and Nicholls were showmen. They weren't necessarily showing up the opposition -- and that's a critical difference. I think the same applies to Ovechkin: he puts on a show, yes, but showing up an opponent isn't part of his thought process. He's just an otherworldly hockey talent who also happens to be a ham. Like Williams and Nicholls, Ovechkin is a character who is not out to challenge the character of the other team."

End of story.

lol @SC1907: You failed to read the sarcasm in dc's statement. Or, you chose to ignore it. I'm in awe of your incompetence. Bravo, though, for keeping a "straight" face amidst your absurdity. Also, you haven't shown much love for Semin in the past two hours. He's heartbroken. *snicker*

@SC1907: When Ovi scored his 50th goal, didn't they win that game? I don't see what skid you're talking about. Unless you mean the loss to the Hurricanes, which I could hardly call a skid. I would also think the other players have better things to think about other than what Ovi's going to do next. Heaven forbid they worry about how they play in the next game or wrapping up another division title. Heaven forbid you find anything else to do besides walk around in your underpants, marching around with a poster board on a pole, predicting gloom and doom for our team.

spot on again. i could see it in pothiers face when he failed to cover the guy on the canes second goal, "if i cover this guy and he doesn't score, then ovie might take the puck and score and do something stupid. i should let this guy score so that wont happen." i think thats why the team takes so many penalties cause it keeps ovie off the ice so he doesn't showboat. great insight.

Tarik does not respect blogging at all. You make great points.

Hart trophy vote this year:
1 - Ovechkin
2 - Mike Green
3 - Alex Semin
4 - Evgeny Malkin
5 - Steve Mason

Semin would win a Hart (or at least the scoring title) if he could stay healthy for a full 82. More talent Crosby, and right up there with Ovechkin and Malking. Just happens to be ~50 lbs. lighter than Ovie.

agreed. these russians dont really play hard or through pain. i mean, two years ago semin only played in 77 out of 82 games. what the hell was he doing during the other 5 games. and last year he dogged it playing only 63 games. sure, 17 were due to a sprained ankle, but what about the other 2. total dog. i mean during that same two year strech, sidney crosby has played 8 fewer games, including missing 28 for a sprained ankle. are we sure cindy isnt part ruskie?

@rachel216: I have to admire SC1907, for coming out with his mancrush on Alexander Semin. It's a difficult process to come to terms with, and his attempts to mask his crush under derogatory comments about the object of his affection are slightly outdated and immature. I must give him credit though to brave the criticism for his disposition. Remember, it's not a choice, but the way he was born.

For the record, if trolls were like seagulls, I'd be shooting them down to stop their caucophonous cawing.

From the Sun Media:

Jeremy Roenick believes that Sidney Crosby is the hockey equivalent of a rice cake in an interview: "I think he's too quiet, too hum-drum, too cliched. I love the kid as a hockey player, but I think he can be more spectacular if he steps up and shows a little personality."

J.R.'s comments came out of a discussion with hosts Bill Watters and Greg Brady on Caps star Alexander Ovechkin. As you might guess, Roenick gave a thumbs up to Ovie's controversial post-goal celebrations.

"If we don't have guys afraid to push the envelope, how dull are we going to become?" Roenick said. "Sometimes we've got to do something a little bit fun. We can't all be robots."

The possibility of the Caps and Pens meeting in the first round - very possible as they 'Canes may steal fifth - would be a dream for TV: the possibility of Ovi, Semin, Green, Crosby, and Malkin for a seven-game series is massive. I'd love to see it - at that point, there's no reason to broadcast any other games in the first round.

Posted by: saintex | March 23, 2009 3:48 PM | Report abuse

I would imagine coaches and GM's have a say on whether the players take days off for minor injuries and/or resting for the playoffs. So your point is moot, SC1907. Try again. If you're so bitter about the prices you pay, no one's forcing you to spend your retirement money on a ticket. I s*ck it up when I unload my money for tickets and I don't blame anyone for the credit card statement the following month so, whining about it just seems futile. But still though, I'd think no price is too high to see your mancrush in action. Go, Semin!

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | March 23, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

well, of course the all star game and the regular season are two different things.

i say players should play in the all star game unless they are ligitimately hurt and risk impacting their teams playoff chances(btw, when was the last guy to get hurt during an all star game?). at the very least, they should show up and schmooze with the sponsors to try and promote the game. thats all the nhl is asking for. show up. you guys are the best of the best and get paid for it. is it too much to ask to wear a suit and sign some autographs. guys get plenty of time in the offseason for vacation.

for their regular season games, players need to do whats in the best interest of the team. if missing a meaningless game will make the team better in the long run, do it. if resting your players in the last week will make your team more competitive in the playoffs, do it. if ovie has a nagging injury during the last week of the season, he should sit. i dont care if they are playing a team w/ playoff implications on the line nor do i care if ovie has 59 goals.

Are you talking about when Grapes said he would include Semin Sittout on his next Rock'em Sock'em Video...LOL

btw, when was the last guy to get hurt during an all star game?).

How about Price for starters! He played and was shelled with goals has never been the same since. He was just coming off injury

DC, LeftCoast, Leegru:

I hope that you enjoy the banter with the trolls. The more you respond the more they continue their nonsense. Realize that you cannot win with a troll because they stand for nothing, besides tearing down what others hold dear.

Personally, I hold trolls in low regard and feel they are beneath contempt. I will not grace a troll with my pearls of wisdom. However, you may feel otherwise.

BTW: Mike Green wins the Norris this year.

Is it just me or did the font size on the blog triple to "large print edition" sizes. Ack.

Like the widget though...

i'm sorry, was he injured in the all star game or just embarrassed?

Is Tarik AWOL this afternoon? Shouldn't we have an after-practice update by now? Or did Lindsay block him out of his own blog? :)

Posted by: tess2201 | March 23, 2009 4:09 PM | Report abuse

Crooks,

while I do agree with you, it's fun on a slow news day to play with the slow and stoopid.

Posted by: Leeguru | March 23, 2009 4:10 PM | Report abuse

We always knew that this sudden interest in the Caps would give Tarik a big head...

(Sorry, that was too easy...)

Actually, I think that last year in the ASG a goalie did pull a groin and missed a few games. Can't remember who it was though.

crooks_c,
sorry, just having fun.

OMG DC you sure have no respect for the paying fans.
Players should realize the customer is king. If it wasnt for the fan these hockey players might as well be playing pond hockey

Yeah, it was Rick DiPietro last yr and he injured his hip.

Posted by: cbs75 | March 23, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Alright, I will get out of the way.

BTW: get ready for a few slow news days over the next 10 days since we will have just two games. This is perfect timing. Get some rest and get healthy. Then crank up the Caps machine to finish off the regular season and roll through the first round like it is nothing.

Prediction: Caps will win the first round 4-1, no matter the opponent. They have shown that when focused they can beat anyone in the league. We will see focus.

richmondphil, ...and brushing his teeth, and walking the dog, and eating cereal, and washing his car, cooking an omelette, sending an email...

Question for those who sometime attend practice:

I haven't visited Kettler since way back in training camp, but am going to be in the area this weekend. I see on the schedule that Sat morning practice is listed at 11 am. How crowded does a Sat practice get? And how early do you think we should plan to get there? Also is there access to the players after practice? Hoping to get my Fedorov jersey signed...

as a paying customer, i would be p'od if i thought a player was dogging it, particularly if it was an important game. however, as a paying customer, i also would be pissed if a player took an unnecessary risk which jeopardized this teams chances in the playoffs. for example, playing w/ the flu in toronto.

nylander was hurt last year. he tried to play through the pain then had season ending shoulder surgery. i fail to see how this relates to semin or others. are you suggesting the caps are the only team that suffers injuries?

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | March 23, 2009 4:33 PM | Report abuse

I'd love to see an "Ignore this poster" button that would work maybe for 24 hours...or permanently.

Getting rid of sc1907 is easy. Just agree with every statement made, it'll take the wind out the wanker's sails.

For example: "Yup, Semin is a floater, couldn't agree with you more" or "Absolutely right, the Caps are doomed with Theo in net". Have fun with it

8 > StanleyCup1907
28 > StanleyCup1907
52 > StanleyCup1907
91 > StanleyCup1907
55 > StanleyCup1907
92 > StanleyCup1907
26 > StanleyCup1907. etc., etc.
The (movie) Mighty Ducks > StanleyCup1907...(and that's when they were know nas "District 5")

You get the idea.

Posted by: Rhino40 | March 23, 2009 4:41 PM | Report abuse

DC

Nylander was also on pace for 74 points last year. He had 37 points through 40 games played. He did that with the shoulder injury.

Does SC have a point to make?

It is mildly amusing to poke fun at the troll. It's like he's trapped in a cage and the space between the bars is big enough to push a stick through it and poke it, as it clumsily sits on its' duff, picking fleas out of its nose hairs. And I'm not a particular fan of giving him my other cheek to spit on. I'll give as good as I get, with a bit more humor. Though he'd get a different reaction if he was standing next to me and making his comments. Highly doubt he'd be able to finish his sentence before I bopped him on the head with a foam bat. *snicker*

That cliched statement may work at your drive-thru window, SC1907, but again, respect is a two-way street. Just because things don't go the way a paying fan would want it to, does not give justification for calling players/teams all the wretched things you've called Semin and any other player that has failed to meet your bar of excellence. Again, unless you've had years of playing hockey, have managed a professional hockey team, and/or know fluent Russian or have access to Semin's personal thoughts, then all you're doing is f@rtin' out statements that no one can take seriously. Tool.

Still getting the hard-to-read, funky red letters on grey background on the front page of Caps Insider. Changes to big black letters only if you go into an article.
