Boston Globe: Lucic and Savard questionable

According to Fluto Shinzawa over at The Boston Globe, the Bruins could be without a couple of key players tomorrow afternoon. Milan Lucic and Marc Savard -- two players who have given the Caps (and a lot of other teams) fits this season -- both have upper body injuries and did not practice today. Blake Wheeler, meantime, has a bum wheel, but he's expected to play.

Follow Fluto's blog here.

As for those two being out ... part of me wants to see a fair matchup with two completely healthy teams. The other part of me thinks my birthday came early, if indeed they do not play.

From Allan Muirs speculative article on possible deals @ SI.com:

Nashville sends Radek Bonk and Greg Zanon to Washington for Oskar Osala and Sami Lepisto

The young Caps may still be a year or two away from the silverware, but they've played well enough to earn deadline reinforcements from George McPhee. Goaltending may be the most glaring need, but this deal addresses two other problem areas: lack of depth down the middle and the need for a physical presence on the blueline. Bonk is operating at 62 percent on the draw -- tops in the league -- and Zanon is a warrior who'll sacrifice his body to make a play. Both are UFA's this summer, so they won't impact next year's books. The Preds get a promising young forward in Osala -- currently third among AHL rookies with 19 goals -- and a small but talented puck-moving blueliner in Lepisto.

Thoughts?

Osala is too promising for a rental. The caps could get more for him.

Posted by: Natstural | February 27, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

It's an interesting deal, but it sounds like renting 2 guys for a promising physical winger in an organization whose forward talent is (mostly) a year away, and Bonk's got the favored "upper body injury" and is on the shelf for a couple weeks.

Posted by: Section117 | February 27, 2009 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Stats on
Zanon – defence
5’ 11’’ – 211 lbs
3 yr – 200+ games – played all 62 this year
Seems to keep PIM’s down
This year 3g – 9 pts total – 34 pim
Gets 20+ mins per game
08/09 salary 750k (cap hit 725k)

Bonk - center
6’3 210
13 yrs – just under 1000 games – almost 500 total pts
This year 56 games, 7g, 20pts, 28 pim
Just under 15 min per game
08/09 salary 1.6mil (cap hit 1.475m)

unlike cooke and heut - these two shouldn't have too steep of a salary demand for next year. if this were to happen and either played well in BB's system - at least there would be a shot to keep them and not just be rentals.
i wouldn't like giving up osala - but any move to shore up the D will take something

Now we are starting to get the stuff we all come here for, thanks guys.

Section117:
i wouldn't see this deal to get bonk as it would be to get zanon. i have no clue as to how he plays - but if he is physical and only costs somewhere between 1.1 to 1.3 as a ufa next year AND he could be signed AND the scouts, GMGM and BB see him as a fit ....

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | February 27, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Wow...with those two out...we need to really take advantage of that! It would be nice to sweep them and get into their brain a bit!

Posted by: NatyBG | February 27, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Scouting sez...

Bonk
complete package, defensively strong, sound fundies, but doesn't play a physical game and is losing his scoring touch.

Someone said upper body injury above - he's out until mid-March so they say.

Zanon:
"Has proven he can put up points at the collegiate and minor-pro levels. Uses a low center of gravity effectively to defend in his own zone.

"Doesn't stand out with any one trait, so he often gets lost in the roster shuffle. May have already peaked, and doesn't own much upside."

That doesn't sound too good.

Posted by: Greg S. | February 27, 2009 4:28 PM | Report abuse

How's this one sound...

"ASSETS: Has both the size and mean streak to keep skill players honest. Can unleash a big-time point shot and log a lot of ice time.
FLAWS: Must curb his propensity to run around the defensive zone in search of the big hit. Is inconsistent in terms of playing the shutdown role.
CAREER POTENTIAL: Point-producing, physical defenseman. "

Brendan Witt threw an elbow and is now suspended for 5 games.

Posted by: Greg S. | February 27, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

now you're just confusing me - i'm not sure if the 'Point-producing, physical defenseman' outweighs the 'run around the defensive zone' - we don't need a Dman that will 'circle around without the puck'!!

to bad GMGM has an NSA mentality - guess we really won't know anything until it happens

dont' trade away the future GMGM

Glad you asked here it is:

Just want to thank everyone for their input making this info better each time.

Is everyone prepared for the 21-game salute?

Picture perfect heading into the stretch. Is anyone more excited than I about the beginning of the stretch run?

Looking Ahead:

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against Carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabres (H)
1 against the Islanders (A)

Looking good for the stretch run! All we need is a veteran puck moving defensman.

So let's say for argument's sake that ShaMo goes and Jurcina/Schultz are given qualifying offers, if for nothing else based on their current contracts. Signing Zanon basically putting Alzner in Hershey again next year. Which goes back to my hesitation on making that deal if it's close to being true.

Capt_Kirk_in_AZ, Well, since I've failed on pretty much all my other Lent things already, I'm going extra hard on this one. And I've extended it to "not being snarky about people I don't know". Which stopped me from making fun of the baseball player with the rolling bat bag. And the girls in the leggings and Ugg boots. I guess that also extends to the girls in the pink jerseys. Capt_Kirk_in_AZ, Sure you're not! lol. Well, laughing is okay, but I have to laugh for the sheer sake of the situation, not because my mind came up with a snarky remark about them. So I can't laugh at the ball player, because its not funny in and of itself. But I can laugh at the leggings and Ugg boots because, well, its just pathetic. Leggings require something over top of them unless you're in an 80s aerobics class.

Capt Kirk: Just so you know, I will be up at 5 am in the morning (like every other day). Tomorrow is low 80s in Central FL so I will be at the beach by 6:45 for sunrise. Your wife makes faces at beer before noon? Try I pop one open and the wife says, "Isn't 8 in the morning kind of early?" and I say, "Well, if it wasn't too early for the first two, it shouldn't be too early for the third one." So I light up a cigar and drink the cold brew. I will have the game on record so we will watch at 7 or 7:30 in the evening, like normal for Hockey Night in Orlando.

BTW, I own a .7 acre plot in Lake Havasu City with a really nice view of the Colorado. I'll be calling you neighbor one day. I'd move back to Maryland except the allure of steamed crabs and Caps games live doesn't make up for six months of frigid weather. (Any time it isn't in the 70s that day, it's frigid.)

Don't give up young pieces like Osala. He's been a guy they've quietly been mentioning since we got him in I believe the 4th round. He might need a few years of seasoning but he looks to have size and scoring touch. I'd hate to give that up merely for depth down the middle (seriously I have no problem with Backs/Feds/Stecks/Gordo) and hoping to add some defensive punch and toughness.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 27, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

I like afternoon games on the weekends. You're happily snoozing until game time after (usually) a good night out, chilling out getting your head together (or over your hangover) while watching the Caps rock some bells. Then you put the jersey on to wear out on the town that night. Caps hockey!

Capt Kirk: Me and you are the same person! T-shirt is like overdressed! And my pool - the cleaner is giving me fits! I go to the beach and hang out with all the same crew and we talk about our "dress" t-shirts and our like dingy t-shirts! Most of my "dress" t-shirts are either Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Yosemite, etc. One of my favorites is Paul & Jerry's Saloon Jerome, Arizona. Jerome rules. One time I was there and there was this guy on a bench like 80 years old with a long beard and I sat down next to him and started talking and my family took pictures and when we got home and looked at the pictures they were like that was me (the old man) when I got old.

We are flying into Phoenix Sept 24th, go home 30th. I have three vacations this year. I made Tucson April 8th-14th since I knew Caps would have it locked up in SE so I am only missing last two reg season games. Then we have Four Corners June 24th, come home July 1st. Santa fe, Durango, Mesa Verde, Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, Painted Desert (again, a favorite) to be done after Cup Finals. Then just before the new season end of Sept we will see again Prescott, Sedona, South Rim, etc. I want this time to climb to top of Mingus Mountain and ride the Verde River RR.

To those who haven't visited Arizona: it's the only thing in life almost as good as Caps hockey and The Allman Brothers Band and a western ribeye steak, cooked to medium.

I had seen a reference to a lower level goaltender in the system, guess it's Holtby. The reference wasn't bad but implied he's got some growing to do. Pretty weak for me to base anything off of I guess though huh?

Posted by: austinsteve | February 27, 2009 9:06 PM | Report abuse

austinsteve,
He does have some growing to do. He's a little, um, adventurous with the puck from what I've heard. He likes to play it and can get caught. From what I remember Prior saying after we drafted him, his technique could use work and he's not as athletic as Varly, but he's a solid goalie. My guess is he's got an AHL career in front of him unless something happens. But here's his stat line for this seasons so far:
54 GP, 37-13-3, 2A, .913 SV,%, 2.51 GAA, 6 SO

I like to check them out too. Only problem is, with most of these guys, I'm old enough to be their mom! You gotta get the older guys like Feds and Brash and Kozlov to get close my age range. But I remember being 15 and that's why I smile when I listen to my niece's opinions.

From the looks of the box score, Kunitz is playing well with JStaal. It would please me immensely if he meshes better with him than Crosby.

Sorry Rachel, NHL looks out for the Pens and Toews hat trick gets taken away (stick above crossbar...was it? probably but too close to call imo) only to see Mr. Mo Mentum change his address to the Pens for 2 dirty goals at the end of the 2nd. 4-2 Pens going to 3rd.

Random pre-going-out thought:
How much would it cost to imbed a flat light panel under the crease that would blink red when a goal is scored?

I always thought the spinning police light still found in a lot of stadiums kinda belongs as a minor-league thing.

Could be trend-setting...

No, I haven't even had a drink yet

austinsteve, it *might* work, but I guess it would depend on how much work it would be to lay down the ice around it. Would it have to be waterproof? I don't know much about ice-laying. It would be cool though!

Thin plastic cover I was thinking.

I thought about an lcd panel but that could cause potential distraction. Maybe we could show Club Scarlet Caps profile pix to entertain the opposing goalies.

Came across something while poking around for info for my fantasy team. With Gaborik out all year guess who's the leading goal scorer on the Wild. None other than the oldie Owen Nolan with... get this... 17 goals! Yet amazingly enough they're still very much in the playoff hunt. What does any of this have to do with the Caps you say? Well, imagine we had Nicklas Backstrom as our #1 goalie.

Can't help, but make a quick post about Neuvirth's last game. I was sure that some would get on his case for allowing 3 in a game in which he didn't have much to do. That's totally unfair. You have to look beyond just the stats and see how the goals were scored.

1. Not even god (otherwise know as Martin Brodeur) would have saved that one. A perfect cross crease pass finished off by a lethal Kovalchuk. Not a chance in hell.

2. Breakaway. Yes, the goalies have a pretty good chance to stop a breakaway, but that's often when a player doesn't make a good play. The Atlanta player made a great move and a great shot.

3. Puck gets coughed up right in the slot and the Atlanta player makes as perfect a shot as you can make.

Conclusion. While Neuvirth didn't have much to do overall he had very little to no chance on all 3 shots that went in. Also, ask any veteran goalie and they'll tell you that those are the toughest games to play. When you don't have much to do and then bang, there's a great chance. The kid did fine and showed great rebound control once again.

I'd like to see him again on Sun vs. Florida.

austinsteve,

i swear i was watching some ahl highlights a few months ago, and instead of the flashing red siren when a goal was scored, the goal posts (and crossbar) lit up red. it was the coolest thing i have ever seen...i have no idea how it was done, but it was awesome. has anyone else seen this, or was i dreaming?

@ranndino

I see what you're saying, but as good as he is he benefits from a team playing a lockdown system every night. They try to win games 2-1. I'm not saying he wouldn't be an upgrade perhaps, although I wonder if you take Theodore's numbers since Christmas and apply it to his season prior and I wonder how many less goals against we have on the sheet.

@_stevo: Oddly, I'm okay with Obama going to a Wizards game first.

Disclaimer: I don't like our sitting president. But, do we really need him to get the media love? I'd argue not. The Caps are growing steadily in popularity, if only because they're the only team in town who's winning right now, but that doesn't mean that everyone has to like hockey. President Obama's earlier comments indicated no interest in hockey - so be it. I'd rather someone come who is going to enjoy it.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 28, 2009 8:04 AM | Report abuse

@ranndino: So would I. I think that with a bit more decisiveness, he'd've had the third goal and eventually he'll make the second, but that will come with experience and confidence. I thought he did well, and had a couple of dynamite stops that he got when it counted. He made the ones he had to. Marty Brodeur doesn't get the first one.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 28, 2009 8:07 AM | Report abuse

ranndino, I agree with everything you said about Neuvirth, maybe it's cause I love him...but anyway, yes, I feel games where there is little to do are the hardest games cause there are times when you're just standing there. As for the breakaway goal, if Jose was there, I bet he couldn't stop that as well. I hope to see him tomorrow, if BB were smart (which he is) he would not give Jose back to back starts. Neuvy on Sunday, hopefully.

@ranndino, kittypawz

After watching the highlights (darn it, will miss both next games too except the first period tonight :( )... I didn't see any big save and the last two goals... well... let's just say he could have done better. They weren't exactly softies, but not unstoppable either. If Theo had allowed those, this board would be all over him (and with some good reasons since he's a seasoned goalie).

Is anybody worried about tonight? Usually it's in the hands of the Caps, but the Bruins are playing really good lately. There was some talk about Pronger for Kessel... the Bruins should not do it because they'd lose too much firepower (and young too), but imagine a D with Chara and Pronger... and a PP with those two at the points... if you like hockey, you almost want it to happen just to see it lol (except I'd like Pronger in red).

Posted by: mauree | February 28, 2009 8:18 AM | Report abuse

rachel you're biased cause you like-like him admit it! :D hehe just joking. My judgment was from the highlights only, they might have missed many good saves?

@_stevo:

Obama wanted to see the Bulls, not the Wizards, so until the Caps play the Blackhawks maybe he'll come. (next year) Him showing up to the Wizards game rooting for the Bulls certaintly made the Wizards play better.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2009 8:24 AM | Report abuse

@Mauree: Um... of course not! ;) lol, okay yeah, but I think everyone knows I kinda got something for him. Early on, Neuvy was swallowing the puck up, everything the Thrashers were shooting was right to his chest. I guess they didn't show that in the highlights.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2009 8:30 AM | Report abuse

@mauree: They didn't show his rebound control, his squaring to the shooter, and they didn't show a couple of cases where he made two or three quick successive saves with traffic in the crease. Cool as a cucumber.

I think he could have done better on the third one, though. He needs a bit more decisiveness and confidence, but that will come with experience. I want him to start vs. Florida to see what he can do against a playoff-caliber team - it'll give us an idea of what we need to deal for at the deadline.

Anyone else take off work on deadline day?

I see that my Neuvirth comments generated quite a response. I stand by what I said. You can always say that a goalie could have done better on almost every goal, but there's no way to logically say that Neuvy could've saved the 2nd and 3rd goals with more seasoning or experience. My whole point was that those 2 shots could have easily beaten any goalie in the league. Sometimes you get these, sometimes you don't, but he certainly can't be blamed for either one and had he saved either those would have been truly great saves. Look at the shot placement and how quickly the Atlanta players got them off. It was great execution on their part so there's a very good chance that those shots would have beaten even Thomas or Luongo.

Also, Mauree, I know I always get on Theo's case, but no I would not have blamed him for goals like that for the same reasons. I try to look at everything objectively. I only blame him when he allows goals he SHOULD be expected to stop. Like when the shot is right at him, but squirts threw or when his recovery is so slow that the guy basically shoots at the empty net, or when he completely loses sight of the puck and is looking in the opposite direction of where the shot came from.

I would not attach any blame to him whatsoever on a well executed by the opposing forward breakaway (goal #2) or a perfect and very quick shot from the slot after a giveaway (goal #3). Like I said, any goalie, even the most experienced one, could've easily been beaten on both of those.

Also, like you said you didn't watch the game. Neuvy's rebound was once again much better than what we see from Theo usually. He just at pucks up. They were sticking to him like magnets to a fridge.

@ richmondphil

Let's not bring politics into it or this thread could quickly deteriorate. While I'm ecstatic that we finally have a president that is well educated, well rounded, incredibly intelligent and can actually speak proper English those who didn't like him before the election wouldn't start liking him after. Whatever causes you and me to like him apparently doesn't do it for them.

For example, while I can see how someone can like McCain (and even used to like him myself before his unbelievably sleazy campaign) when someone tells me that they love Sarah Palin it definitely takes my opinion of them down a few notches. It's almost like an IQ test for me.

The point is that I can certainly tell you that had McCain - Palin won I would not have reversed my opinion of Palin in any way. I just absolutely can't stand her in every single way so it wouldn't matter whether she does something or not.

40-18-5 would look really nice after today's game. COME ON CAPS... but the thought of Thomas... UGH.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 28, 2009 11:39 AM | Report abuse

Seems we are in the same boat, as I actually liked McCain a lot but could not stand Palin. I see your point, but I guess I just read her comment as a relative assessment of what he's done in his job so far, and not necessarily just him.

I don't see how someone can legitimately try to care about politics and disregard a position, one of the highest regard in this case, just because s/he doesn't contend to your party views. That kind of scares me. But i see it was an aesthetic judgment of him, and not specifically a judgment of what he has done.

@ Davethecapsfan

I agree that Backstorm might benefit from Minesotta's lockdown system, but I watch him all the time (at least via NHL on the Fly highlights) and there can't possibly be an argument that he would be a massive upgrade over Theo.

I would even say that on average he is called upon more to make great saves than Theo because Minnesota is not good offensively so the opposition spends a lot more time in their zone.

This is actually a myth that a defensive team's goalie has less work. The Caps dominate the opposition in most games spending most of the time in their zone. If you watch any of the games by defensive teams you'd see that because their offense sucks most of the play is in their zone and their goalie has to constantly make saves, often very good ones. Florida is also a good example of that. The only reason they've been so successful this season is because they've gotten tremendous goaltending from both, Vokoun and Anderson who are often called upon to make over 40 saves. Same goes for Pekka Rinne in Nashville. So I would actually say that had Theo played for any of those teams his numbers would be far worse.

On the other hand, if any of those goalies played for us we'd be nearly impossible to beat. You give them 3 goals per game to work with and they win 95% of the time.

Theo is barely adequate. I'm happy when he doesn't single handedly lose us games and just makes the saves he's supposed to. Goalies like Backstrom, Rinne, Vokoun and Anderson steal games on a regular basis. Same goes for Steve Mason, Nabokov, etc. Mason especially because he also gets very little goal support.

Hello All!
Lets get real Caps fans, our defensive breakdowns and lapses of late have been gross and glaring (the 3 goals on Neuvy). About our activity at deadline, I know most of us agree addressing our defensive needs should be the focus and thinking about any forwards would be counterproductive.

We can argue that coaching has alot to do with those lapses but still, we need to get our defense to the Cup level of which we are definitely not.

Unless we get a Selke winner or something, if GMGM does not make a defensive impact at deadline, we will not make that jump to true contenders. Having said all that, my true opinion about landing a Pronger-level defenseman is that a Flash and Fehr/Alzner package is what the bill will be if that were to happen and GMGM won't do that this year anyway. Think about it, Pronger/Niedermayer won Anaheim the Cup and they don't come cheap, salary or acquisition.

I think GMGM will grow our D organically like he has been doing with the rest of the team so deadline day will be quiet for us. Hate to say it again but I think the Cup is still a few years away but we are on the right track.

@ richmondphil

Right, she just said that she doesn't like him. Since she's obviously a Republican she won't like anything he does either.

People just see everything through the prism of their own views and biases. I try to be as objective as I can be, but I admit that even I can't be 100% objective all the time. Most people don't even try though.

As for the position of the president. Once again, I couldn't stand Bush before he first got elected. It was mind boggling to me that someone like that could be elected to be president, in fact. So after he got elected it's not like I all of a sudden said, OK, even though I think the guy isn't qualified to run a laundromat he's now our president and I have to like him.

The point is that just because someone you don't like gets elected it doesn't mean you reverse your opinion of that person. So all the people who hated Obama before the election still hate him. Some of them pretend like they don't, but dig a little deeper and it comes right out. I have Republican friends so I know.

I would even say that if has somehow miraculously managed to solve the financial crisis and end the war in Iraq in an acceptable fashion (the Republicans would simplify it and call it "winning") they would still hate him.

Most people are just way too brainwashed. With the abundance of sources of info these days it's very easy to limit yourself to one sided, extremely biased opinions. It's even easy to be as extreme as you wanna be. If you're getting all your info from fringe websites (either left or right wing) your whole perception of reality will be incredibly skewed, yet you'd believe it to be the ultimate truth.

I see examples of that all the time. This is true as a social observation and applies to anything, not just left vs. right political views. The same goes for religious views, PC vs. Mac, sports teams or anything else.

ranndino:
i won't try to argue that theo is better than backstrom. i would agree that def teams like minn spend more time in there dzone which leads to giving up many more shots. those def systems rely on most of those shots coming from the point with a good sight line for the goalie. in my opinion if you swapped theo and backstrom - theo would have slightly better numbers than he has now and backstroms would be a little worst. however i think the caps would be better overall - as you would have more of a chance with backstrom stealing a couple of games.
