Boswell: Let Eight Celebrate

Thomas Boswell wrote an excellent column about Alex Ovechkin for today's paper in which he blasts the old-school critics who say the Caps winger's 50th-goal celebration was inappropriate. Here's an excerpt:

When a charismatic, 23-year-old reigning MVP wants to "do his thing," and it's more modest than what lesser stars have done in every other sport for a generation, the adults should let him do it. Young genius has prerogatives, too.
The NHL needs all the help it can get to attract new fans and get the major TV contract it desperately lacks. Yet the snipers are already after No. 8.
"He's the game's most dominant scorer, but to do that, especially on our ice, I took it as an insult," Tampa Bay winger Ryan Malone told the St. Petersburg Times. "It's embarrassing. This isn't football."
As one of my editors blurted: "No, it's not football, you moron. Football has a billion-dollar TV deal."

So who gives a f* what Boswell thinks, that guy still thinks that baseball and football are the only sports in the world, he just jumped into the hockey bandwagon and now he becomes a statesmen on the sport? What a laugh.

As one of my editors blurted: "No, it's not football, you moron. Football has a billion-dollar TV deal."

Hey, Boswell, you moron, the player was referring to the sport not to the business side. What do you care about the business side of any sport? You don't get a dime out of it, or do you? The fans are the ones who end up paying directly or indirectly for those huge TV deals. Stick to your moronic sports.

Much ado about nothing..........

For those of you that want to make comparisons to Ocho Cinco and TO, ask yourself this. Is it the celebrations that have caused their problems or is it their reputations as self centered athletes that are cancers in the locker room. I have never once heard anyone in the media or in his peer group accuse Ovie of being a bad guy. If TO and Ocho Cinco were well liked by everyone, I doubt anybody would care about their end zone celebrations.
I think a much better example would be Bruce Smith. His celebrations tended to be over the top but he was a beloved figure by his teammates and fans alike so nobody seemed to care.

I think before next Penguins game Ovi needs to tell us we'd better get our popcorn ready

I feel that it is acceptable to e excited - but... play and act like you've been there!! How many Playoff rounds has the great #8 won in his career??? So,,, you can have the greatest individual year but if you're team doesn't win when it matters, what is the point of celebrating a basically meaningless goal (in the overall scheme of things) in the regular season... Did you see #71 do any of that when he scored his 100th pt the other night against Atl? Blog/Post back when #8 wins at least one playoff round or comes within two games of winning the Cup.

Posted by: 8isgreatnot | March 21, 2009 4:54 AM | Report abuse

#71 (whoever that is) gets enjoyment out of watching a city rust. He has the charisma of cardboard. And coming within two games of winning a Stanley Cup still means you lost. Especially when #71 not showing up until it was way too late was the cause of not winning that Stanley Cup.

#71 and #87 are weird. They are adult male multi-millionaires living in someone else's house. Aren't they just what you want your kids to grow up and be like? At one point that was cute, but the slumber party should end at some point. Don't they have realtors in Western PA?

Plenty of people care about #8. Hardly anyone cares about #71. #71 and #87 give people the creeps through their odd personal habits.

Posted by: pga6 | March 21, 2009 6:17 AM | Report abuse

Good point - not! The celebration may have been goofy or over the top, but it's over and BB says it won't happen again. Were 8isgreat on your team, you wouldn't be saying squat right now. So go watch 71 and his baby sister 87isamannot (Ref! someone checked me! Wah!) and keep wishing that they had as much personality as 8isgreat.

Posted by: Puckdawg69 | March 21, 2009 6:53 AM | Report abuse

@ 8isgreatnot
He didnt celebrate much his 100 points - big deal. Ovechkin will get 100 points this season and have a calm celebration and Crosby will also :) I dont think that anyone else is going to get 50 goals.
Malkin had his celebration once when he was mocking an opponent's team bench after scoring a wrap around. So you totally forget about Malkin's mocking celebration or Selanne showboating because you like em right? I got that already.

HELLOOOOOOO? GAME TODAY? Can we PLEASE let this thing go and concentrate on the important stuff? Nobody is going to remember this in the grand scheme of things.

We have some Hurricanes to go beat today!

Last game is last game. This is THIS GAME.

Can we please get back on topic?

@Tarik - I fervently hope this is your LAST POST on this stupid subject, because it should have been forgotten two days ago. SHEESH!

Posted by: irockthered | March 21, 2009 7:42 AM | Report abuse

I agree that we've had enough of the subject. It has, however, brought more attention from a wider audience, even during NCAA tournement time. If the goal is to grow the sport, then let the focus be here in Washington on the best player in the game.

Posted by: bluejeener1 | March 21, 2009 7:53 AM | Report abuse

Boswell is right. Now let's go beat Carolina.

Posted by: mikebrady1 | March 21, 2009 8:36 AM | Report abuse

Only thing I didn't like was Backs and Green left Ovie out to dri.....he was looking for his buds on the Celebration.......

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | March 21, 2009 8:45 AM | Report abuse

Yeah I don't like how Green said he would join in beforehand and then afterwards tells the media "Theres no way I was going to do that" He kinda left Ov hanging there.

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 21, 2009 8:52 AM | Report abuse

oh my god, I really dont care anymore. I just wnt them to play well against the Canes.

Posted by: oo7 | March 21, 2009 9:05 AM | Report abuse

I agree with Boswell. (Like Boswell, I'll admit to paying more attention to baseball than any other sport during my lifetime.)

Ovi's buddies had egged him and (and then backed out). And then one of his buds was in the penalty box at the time, too.

large23220: Wow, you have thin skin. You definitely don't come from Maritime stock because we Sailors can take a verbal beating without having a Crosby-like outburst. Of course since you were up at 3am you're probably still sleeping off your hangover. LOSER.

"Blog/Post back when #8 wins at least one playoff round or comes within two games of winning the Cup." -8isgreatnot

Congrats to you guys! You did exactly that. come within two games of winning the Cup... so do they keep track of that?... NOBODY cares. Just like no one cares about the loser of the Super Bowl.

Posted by: billieb | March 21, 2009 9:30 AM | Report abuse

I'm with IRTR

New thread please, we got the Hurricanes seeking revenge and hunting for a playoffs spot.

And we got Bourque possibly in the line-up tonight!

Posted by: mauree | March 21, 2009 9:48 AM | Report abuse

Even the beloved Crosby and Malkin have started to jump into the glass after games. Heck, I saw the Kings do it against the Bruins the other night.

Ovie started a fun trend and the Pens/Crosby fans can't stand that. I think it was great when JR said Crosby was, in essence, a boring interview.

This was a special celebration for a special goal. As you may recall, Ovie had not really jumped into the glass after his goals in a while because they we not necessarily special goals (i.e. record breakers, OT game winners).

Can't wait to get on with tonight's game and move past this. Here's to Semin getting 4 more points against the Canes.

Let's Go Caps!

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | March 21, 2009 9:51 AM | Report abuse

Here here, could not agree more. The dinosaurs that run/market/televise the NHL would never even consider that maybe, just maybe, they're morbid bound league could use more excitement. Gee, what a concept. Idiots.

Posted by: DaleDUI | March 21, 2009 9:52 AM | Report abuse

I agree with every pens fan: Until the redskins win 6 super bowls, and until 15 years has passed since our last stanley cup WIN, we cannot talk about the fact that we have the best player in the world, an exciting, close knit team, and have not sold our future like the flightless waterfowl did LAST season to get the opportunity to LOSE the in the playoffs. We must remain silent. According to Puckguru and cheef an the other more knowledgable people who post here, we are lucky the team is able to find the ice, much less be in 3rd place in the conference. We are this close to being a WHL team.

Let's talk about carolina, and we will be lucky to crush them tonight.

Posted by: Leeguru | March 21, 2009 9:54 AM | Report abuse

CTCapsPhan: Exactly, when I watch other teams (not the Caps) EVERYONE is doing the jump into the glass... when you're excited, you can't help it! Okay, time to move on, like everyone said, LET'S BEAT THE HURRICANES!

I predict that the Caps will win BIG TIME in Carolina!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | March 21, 2009 10:05 AM | Report abuse

We're still on the Ovi subject. C'mon now. With all that's going on in the US, Ovi dancing and having fun is the big subject. He did it, it done, now we should move on.

Honestly when I first saw it I thought it was funny then I got back to the game like the teams did and forgot about it until I heard it again. He danced fine. Those who have a problem fine, others don't, so leave the man alone and get back to the games. We have 9 more to go before the playoffs.

Posted by: bajgirl | March 21, 2009 10:12 AM | Report abuse

The bigger problem with the NHL is that they beat a dead horse like no other sport... Typically it is the negative stuff like Avery, McSorely, Bertuzzi.

Yeah Ovechkin celebrated, yeah it was different/weird/classless whatever. Drop it and move on.

wow, could have said the same thing about cindy and the pens this time last year. lets see, in cindy's first playoffs, the team bowed out in 5 games including a shutout in the last game, losing 4 straight. cindy had 5 pts and 1 gwg. alex's first playoffs went 7 games plus. they were down 3-1 like the pens, but didn't roll over like cindy's pens. they took it to ot in game 7. alex had 9 points in 7 games and 2 gwg's. and he was considered to have had a bad series. last year, as you mentioned, the pens didnt' win the stanley cup.

Capsroadcrew: Be loud as hell down at RBC guys! This is another HUGE game. A win and we all but slap Carolina off our feet.

I hope to see goal celebrations from Flash, Brads, Steckel, Poti, Pothier, Morrison, Erskine, Nyls, Koz, etc etc. It's awesome to see our top guys score but we need contributions from everywhere. Last two games were put away when secondary scoring started contributing. Koz's goal to make it 2-0 in FLA was the nail in the coffin. Nyls goal to make it 4-2 and Brads making it 5-2 = game over in Tampa. Keep the secondary scoring coming. Brooksy is the crashing the net, but we could definitely use more. I really enjoy watching these boys play because it doesn't look like a job to them, they love hitting the ice. Can't wait until tonight!

Posted by: fanohock1 | March 21, 2009 10:44 AM | Report abuse

Get over it, man. You should just be happy that Boswell is on the bandwagon for now because it means more Caps coverage in the paper. It makes no sense to blast him like that. Furthermore, Boswell's right, to the extent that NHL need a big-time TV contract, and Ovie is the kind of player who could get it for the league.

I'm heading to Raleigh for tonight's game. One of the few times I get to see the Caps live during the season. Last time I went this year, Caps won 5-1 or 5-2, so I'm expecting another dominant performance.

Posted by: CDon | March 21, 2009 10:46 AM | Report abuse

I've always enjoyed hockey not being a top 3 sport in the US. Easier to get tickets, players are more accessible, the fan base is more passionate, etc. A big time TV contract might sink the game we love.

@hock1 - Your right, I can't wait for the day when the Verizon Center is back to being half filled, you need a magnifying glass to find the recap and box score of the previous nights game in the paper and high school hoops is highlighted on the evening news before the Caps, yes that was much better.

All you Caps fans are still fuming over the fact that Jagr couldn't do anything when he got to Washington AND the fact that the Pens have pretty much owned you in the playoffs over the years. Hmmmm... What will happen if the Pens get into the 6 slot where they will take on your beloved Caps. Pens in 6 - # 8 can do his little dances and stick warming stuff while he is playing golf and the Pens are marching towards the Cup. And, oh yeah, who holds the Princes of Wales Trophy right now??? You're correct - The Penguins - so what if they "didn't win"... It was an amazing time in the city of champs that was culminated by the Steelers winning their 6th SB. How many do the
'Skins have?

Found top 10 all time goal celebrations on YT (forward to 1:40):

Somehow no one seemed to have a problem with these back then. I love Selanne's at #2 and can you only imagine Ovechkin doing what Tiger Williams used to do back in the old days (ranked #1 in this video)?

This is a wholly manufactured controversy.

Could someone explain to me what the Steelers winning the SB and the Pens being champs 15 years ago has to do with the Caps in 2009?

Because if someone is looking for a history lesson, didn't the Pens bring sucking to all new levels this decade? Sucking so bad that they had less people in the stands than the Caps did when we really sucked? Sucking to the point of getting two #1's and a #2 overall in three years in a row. Sucking so bad that Mario had to threaten to move the team to KC to get a new arena built?

But rachel, we can't count points in the playoffs. We only won 75% of the games this season against them. Oh, what are we to do? How many points are we ahead of them in the standings? We should quit now. In fact, we need to wait until the Redskins win 3 more super bowls!

It did help last game when the Pens fans were trying to explain the rules to us. They do need to work on their counting skills to figure out too many men on the ice though.

Well Rachel216, I hope that when the Pens and Philthy play each other in the first round of the playoffs this year, they'll play a 7 game, very hard fought series where the winner has nothing left for Round 2. Isn't it a shame that two players from the same team will finish 1-2 in the scoring title? Also, why does "AO" have more goals than assists... 'cause he is a puck hog and doesn't have the skill to pass the puck which can be just as exciting as scoring on a wrist shot!

Ah yes, nothing quite as exciting as the secondary assist!

That's right, it takes far more skill to pass to the guy who scores or to pass to the guy who passes to the guy who scores than to actually score.

Get over what? Posting my opinion? It seems like you should get over my opinion.

You obviously missed the point. Boswell took a player's opinion about the game and converted it into an opinion of the business side which was never the intention of that player. Worse, he call him a moron, when in fact the moron is Boswell for the lack of understanding a very obvious reference to the game and not the business. What does you and Boswell care how the league is managed? Do you think the people running the league, owners included, are moron business people who need your advice or the advice of an idiotic two bit writer?

Have a good trip to Carolina and enjoy the game, I am sure the owners will be fine.

By your little attempt to sarcasm, I can deduct you don't enjoy the game of hockey as much as you enjoy the atmosphere. That is cool, a lot of people feel the same way as you, the sport is secondary to what is around the event. You don't need hockey, you can go to football, professional wrestling, and the circus and to you it will be the same. For me, I don't need a full stadium to see a great game, actually, I will prefer no to sit next to some of the obnoxious morons that infiltrate the place.

While I still don't really like what Ovie did - the bottom line is that the Tampa players need to shut up. They had a chance to do something about it, on the ice, when Brashear wasn't even available to stop them, and they chickened out. The hell with 'em.
