Tonight's Lineup

Coach Bruce Boudreau wouldn't confirm tonight's lineup or which players might be back from their injuries when he spoke to the media, but here's what the lines look like in warm-ups with Alexander Semin, Tom Poti and Tyler Sloan all skating.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Giroux-Nylander-Kozlov
Osala-Laich-Bradley
Brashear-Steckel-Gordon

Morrisonn-Collins
Poti-Sloan
Alzner-Jurcina

Johnson

my fave injured players are back (I LOVE YOU TOM POTI!!!) and i'm sure semin's got a lot of aggression to get out after being sidelined for the last month, and my favorite goalie's in net.

this is gonna be the most enjoyable game i've seen in a while...I'M SO EXCITED!!! C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS!!!!!

God.. after those posts i feel the need to write something overly manly.

Good to see Semin and Poti back.
Im sure with as long as Semin has been out he is 100%. He has been day to day for how many weeks now?

Posted by: MZawacki | December 10, 2008 6:47 PM | Report abuse

I won't get excited until I see Semin and other key players go a few games without reaggravating their injuries.

Lets Go Cap-I-Tals!!!

Bernie,
I've heard some scuttlebutt that he's not that great to have in the locker room and was part of the problem last season for the Sens. But could just be hearsay. I guess I don't see him play enough to judge his talent. I remember he had a good year a few seasons back, but he hasn't really impressed me since.

Semin is looking great! Boy, have we missed him. What a 1st period he had! Was anxious to see first contact, but he looked OK after getting hit. In fact, hit Chara later on that shift.

Osala looks hesitant & unsure of what he should do. Just do what you're doing in Hershey Oskar! Don't be so afraid to make a mistake.

Collins is looking great again. Aside from doing his thing cleaned up a few of Mo's screw-ups, in fact. And almost scored his 1st NHL goal too.

Posted by: ranndino | December 10, 2008 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Ugh. Can't get the game in Phoenix - the web link is not working and Versus is not showing now. Bummer. How do the boys look? SO HAPPY Semin is back. And someone said Poti? How about Green? Guess you are all watching so I can get the highlights later. Go CAPS!

Posted by: vkova10 | December 10, 2008 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and of course we're getting great goaltending so far from Johnny. Just afraid that he might not come up for the 2nd. Looked really hurt on that great save and took a long time to get up after every save thereafter. Looks injured to me. Hope I'm wrong.

Posted by: ranndino | December 10, 2008 7:51 PM | Report abuse

what is up w/ poor brent johnson?! he seems like he set himself up for a breakout season and keeps getting injured.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 10, 2008 7:52 PM | Report abuse

sloan and poti are back, no green.

osala up, and collins still up.

flash is out.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 10, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

What brought Spezza onto the issues anyway?
Agreed, I would take him for sure but it would definitely take more than Flash to bring him to DC to begin with. He was an overall first pick I believe, and he and Heatley are ungodly when they click.

Anyway, hope Giroux and Osala can keep playing their game. So far so good.

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | December 10, 2008 7:53 PM | Report abuse

I guess you could Spezza in the category of
Semin
Jeff Carter
Phil Kessel

Gotta tighten up that dee -- 14 shots, yikes

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 10, 2008 8:01 PM | Report abuse

I have 30 years exp in defense industry. What does this mean in relation to Caps? Nothing. Except, well, team building. Success isn't Bob + Stan + Sally Jo = Profit. No, Success = (Bob + Stan + Sally Jo)*1.2 (synergy from team) = Total Results.

People who "buy into the system" tend to magnify the results. Did you see Semin? The world-class moves? Soccer-styling the puck at the blue lie with his skate and bringing it in, onside? Semin has "bought in." His head is with the team. Know what I mean? And look at Johnny - best goaltending of his life maybe (I didn't watch his early Blues days) - he has bought in. And Poti - this everyone is injured thing has propelled him to team leader status - and he has bought in. Ovie - the consummate leader - he's the Swarzeneggar of the team.

And which two players don't fit in?

Take your own guesses.

My opinion - Nylander and Theodore. I can't see inside their heads, but they are clearly "somewhere else."

So make them fit in or ship them out.

You can't keep square pegs in a round world.

There are some things us old guys have learned that fit in today's world.

Johnny was just plain great. If he can play like that, I'd dump Theo for any taker and bring up Varly and then get to keep Alzner and Sloan with the cap savings.

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 10, 2008 8:02 PM | Report abuse

Bernie, somebody brought up a Spezzay for Flash straight trade and I protested. Guess I shouldn't have bit.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | December 10, 2008 8:06 PM | Report abuse

I agree that Nylander's style does not fit the Caps up tempo, push the puck up ice, quick transition game. His salary is far too expensive for what he brings. When Feds gets healthy, I hope GMGM can find a buyer for Nylander.

Posted by: jess4caps | December 10, 2008 8:40 PM | Report abuse

For those Theo apologists this is what I call good goaltending. If the Bruins had 4 goals right now after 2 periods you'd say that the goalie could not be blamed because they were all 100% scoring chances. But that's what the goalie's for. Johnny's been excellent so far.

Major screw-up by Sloan on the Bruins goal.

Mo needs to get his crap together. He's supposed to be the vet in that pair, yet I've now counted at least 3 major screw-ups by him that his partner Collins managed to clean up. Once again, Collins has been absolutely awesome. Every time he's around the puck he gets possession and either makes a good outlet pass or throws it hard out of the zone. And what a great diving play there to save an almost sure goal. The more I watch him the more I like what I see.

Good board work by Osala on Giroux's goal.

Posted by: ranndino | December 10, 2008 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Gotta agree with everyone who says Johnny should be the Caps' no. 1 netminder!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | December 10, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

@tess, ranndino

I'm positively impressed by Collins too. I hope he stay around, he seems cool under pressure. I liked it when he got checked on the boards behind the net, but still kept the puck and didn't fall. You don't see that often on Caps D.

Posted by: mauree | December 10, 2008 8:47 PM | Report abuse

if three-or-more was in net, we'd be losing 3-2. any moron can see the difference in the 2. Good to see Semin and Poti, Leadership at the blueline so far, except for Sloan's bonehead play at the end of the period, we're solid. We need to take control early in the 3rd.

Posted by: ergoroc | December 10, 2008 8:51 PM | Report abuse

Randinno,

Poti was on the ice with Sloan when the goal was scored. But Sloan still made a bad play. Second half of the period the team could not clear their zone.

Posted by: Leeguru | December 10, 2008 8:52 PM | Report abuse

I have to say the credit for goal #2 goes mostly to Nylander for the set-up. And the blame for the Bruins goal, my opinion, is to Sloan for not clearing the puck and leaving Poti high and dry 1 on 2.

What really impressed me (besides Johnny) was Savard the little c-su@ker comes over and goes after Poti again and here comes Alzner (Poti don't need no help vs Savard but it looked great) and then Ozzie (Osala) jumps in and the B's need to understand to back off. That was nice.

Jurcina has also really stepped up since his "promotion" to "senior player."

Alzner has played very nice positional hockey. Fifteen years from now they will be talking about him like they used to talk about Kevin Lowe.

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin could go down as one of the Top 10 hockey lines all-time. A bit too soon to tell, but I'd wager a Benjamin on whatever odds are floating in my vacation town of what y'all refer to as Sin City.

Don't have much time to type. So my summary:

-Semin looked good on his first game back. As well did Poti
-Very good 1st impression from Osala. Used his body well. Didn't score a goal, bue he had a few chances
-Collins continues to impress
-Nice to see Giroux score
-Brashear was flying tonight. Didn't have many scoring chances, but his physical play was very pleasant to see.
-I give 70% of the credit to Brent Johnson. He was PHENOMENAL!

Posted by: elicea | December 10, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

I just hope Johnny is ok. After that scare in the first, it seemed like there were several times when he was very slow to get up.

I know all this blog won't agree with me, but I liked Jurcina as well. He was aggressive and well positioned. I think him and Alzner make a good pair.

am_jim:

tominfl1,

i can't blame nylander or clark given that they are trying to regain form after long-term injuries. they would have been on fire w/ out those issues.

Posted by: am_jim | December 10, 2008 9:12 PM

My opinion: Nylander has had enough time to recover. Is he still hurt? everytime he brings the puck in the o-zone and opposing D approaches he dumps the puck toward the goal - whether there's a teammate there or not. Am I imagining? You can't have a team of tough guys (Ovie) and then one guy who just isn't. I'm not criticizing because it's way harder to do any job than how it looks from a distance (let's see you all put together a $1B cost estimate and then defend it to corp HQ). However, I will say that Nyles and Theo just don't FIT IN.

It's like if you invite your buds to come over and drink cold ones and watch the Caps and someone invites Liberace (OK, before he died) and you are all watching and screaming and Liberace is oogling over Ovechkin ("Oooh, isn't he cute?") and some asks, "Where the hell did the guy with the sequins come from?"

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 10, 2008 9:52 PM | Report abuse

geauxcaps...to summarize..why wouldn't you want them on? one slip up and a quick score like ovie showed. You want your best stick handlers in a situation like that. kind of like an onside kick...for a minute. Incredible win tonight!!! It will be sick to see what our playoff lineup will be when everything settles out!

Posted by: CapsSkins | December 10, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

What, Nylander wears sequins? Too funny. Looks like BJ earned top goalie until he loses it.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 10, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

CapsSkins, well for one thing, I was stuck listening to the game over the web so I couldn't see the line changes. I just heard their three names called and thought, huh, no Gordon or Steckel or Laich for a more defensive presence? I know Ovechkin and Semin have been killing penalties, so having one or both out there wouldn't have been so surprising. Just having all three at once seemed unusual. At any rate, it's a win and I'll take that any way they come :).

Posted by: geauxcaps | December 10, 2008 10:07 PM | Report abuse

I noticed something...
When Lisa Hillary was interviewing Ovie in the postgame show, Collins' locker stall was in the background...completely empty. Does this mean he is already in a cab on the way to the airport to join the Bears in Texas? And does that mean Greenie is back on Friday?

WOW. WOW. And more WOW!! Just got back from the booth and got caught up on the comments.

This team...when they play like they can and dont blow-off a game against a weaker team, is silly good.

I've been straight up killing Jurcina on here for the last three weeks. Today, he played really well. Marking his man, moving with out the puck. The little things that pester a team all night.

I am super worried about Johnnie. We sit right behind him 1st and 3rd, he was having a hard time moving when the action wasn't on top of him. I hate to say it, he looked hurt. But jeez-o-flip did he paly his tail off tonight.

Please all the threeormore disciples, save it. Tonight showed that Johnnie should be the lear number one.

Boston fans are a bunch of front-running cry babbies. Evidence by the putz who sat next to us. Complained the whole night to the usher about our section. Pal..if I go to the enemies building in my gear, I'm gonna try and not pick a fight with the Caps season holders, who know the person that you got the tickets from. Capishe?

Mauree,

I agree with you about Jurcina tonight but to me, he only stood out because he just did his job. Unfortunately, Juice tends to be on the short end of the game's goals against more often than not but tonight, again he just kept the puck out of the slot. If he was more steady on that department, I would be agreeing with you about #23 more often.

Where is windjammersouth?

No wise comments about this win? Oh, yes, only negatives.

Nice win to build on. Yes, Johnnie is the #1 now.

@tess2201,

You notice everything, don't you? Maybe it is like the subsitute teacher who doesn't bring too much of their own stuff until they are permanent...then again....

:)

Gloom and Doom before the Canadiens game...
result 3-0...

Gloom and Doom before the Bruins game...
result 3-1...

I hope "the sky is falling" crew always cry "we're doomed" before every game.

Steve R, thanks for the ticket, sorry about the 3rd wheel, she's a Bruins fan.

Ended up in the Bruins Box and Adam Ward and Marco Sturm were in there. I called Sturm a Kraut, jk.

I love Johnny, but with the money being paid, Theodore's going to get his fair share of starts. Does he deserve them? Maybe, maybe not. I do think Johnny, right now, is a better goaltender. But in a week, I might say something else. And then, in another week, something else. I'd like to think Theo can get his game together.

Alzner... the only +2 player on the ice tonight...

in 8 games

1G 2A +3 20:13 ATOI 6 Hits 13 Blocks

Why people thought he wasn't good enough to play right away is beyond me.

Whiter,
You saying something else on alternate weeks about our goaltending does not give me heartburn. Not having a steady starter in goal does.

I am preaching to the choir I know, but either BJ or JT must play the starter roll consistently or our season is doomed to sporadic highs with intermittent lows.

Granted, BJ looked great tonight and I want him to play like this every start, but my realistic hopes are that he just plays like a starter every game. Too much to ask, maybe?
