Boudreau puts Caps through grueling practice

Capitals forward Mike Knuble had trouble remembering a practice this year that featured as much skating as Bruce Boudreau put his players through this morning at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Boudreau had steadily been ramping up the conditioning since the Capitals' non-Olympic players returned to the ice Wednesday after a 10-day break, but this workout was clearly the toughest. After a sometimes tedious hour-long session focused almost exclusively on neutral-zone play, Boudreau had his team end practice with a shootout game involving sprints to mid ice and then some traditional suicide sprints across the width of the ice.

"Maybe one other day since training camp we've skated like that, probably when he was mad at us about something," said Knuble. "Guys knew it was coming today, it's just part of conditioning. It's good to get our feet moving."

So just how hard was this training camp-style practice? Usually players stay on the ice for 15 or 20 minutes post-practice to play shooting games and joke around. Today, all but one marched straight to the locker room, drenched in sweat and gasping for air.

"I think the biggest thing was a lack of numbers out there," said forward Matt Bradley. "We're missing a full line. That makes for some tough drills because you have to go a lot more than you usually do."

Boudreau said that after tomorrow's day off, he plans to work on defensive-zone coverage on Sunday and Monday and the power play on Tuesday before the Capitals return to the ice Wednesday for a game in Buffalo.

*The lone player to remain on the ice after practice was returning Olympian Semyon Varlamov, who didn't appear until halfway through practice because his equipment had yet to arrive from Vancouver. Once he had his pads on, the 21-year-old goalie faced shots from assistant coaches Bob Woods, Dean Evason, and Arturs Irbe for 30 minutes extra minutes before sitting down in the locker room to discuss his experience at the Winter Olympics.

Varlamov spent much of his time in Vancouver in the press box as Team Russia's third-string goalie. He did not appear in any games, but made it a point to take in everything he could from veteran Russian goaltenders Ilya Bryzgalov and Evgeni Nabakov and Team Russia GM and Russian goaltending legend Vladislav Tretiak.

"I think it's a good experience for me because I was talking with great guys, big stars," Varlamov said in English. "I learn how guys play in the Olympics, I watch many games."

Washington's other Olympians -- forwards Alex Ovechkin, Alexander Semin, Nicklas Backstrom, and Tomas Fleischmann -- are expected to rejoin the team on Sunday.

Be sure to check out tomorrow's notebook in the paper, where I'll have more on Boudreau's back-to-basics practices and what it was like for Varlamov to watch the Olympics side-by-side with Tretiak in the press box.

*Speaking of the goalies, Varlamov's return means the Capitals now have three on the roster, a logjam Boudreau addressed after practice.

"Only Theo has to clear waivers to go down, so we could send one down," he said. "But I haven't really had the meetings with [GM] George [McPhee] because we didn't know when Varly would be coming back. So this weekend, we'll be making decisions, probably by Monday, on that scenario. Now I believe Varly will have to go down [to Hershey] and play a game or two to get game-ready because he played one game for us and didn't play any in the Olympics. We're hoping that that will happen, so we'll see."

As for handicapping who will be the starting goaltender for the final 20 games of the regular season and into the playoffs, Boudreau was vague when asked if determining who would be between the pipes in the postseason is the team's biggest looming decision.

"I guess it would be," he said. "Theo's been playing really good of late, when Varly was healthy he was playing really good and when Neuvy was healthy, he was playing really good. So it's a tough call and I'm glad we don't have to make that call in the next day or two."

*Matt Bradley wouldn't take the bait when asked about the five-game suspension levied by the NHL to Cam Janssen of the St. Louis Blues yesterday for his hit on Bradley when the two teams played on Feb. 13. ("It's up to the league to decide those things and whatever they decide is usually the right thing," Bradley said.) But Boudreau didn't miss an opportunity to throw his two cents in.

"I thought it was quite adequate," he said. "The league saw it how we saw it. It was a dirty hit approximately a second and a half after Matt had let the puck go and he had turned his head, too. And it was a shot to the head. So it's over and done with; we don't play them anymore but I think it was good justice."

*On the injury front, goalie Michael Neuvirth (minor injury) and forward Jason Chimera (groin) both made it through all of today's practice.

That's all for me as I try to make it back to D.C. for the start of the USA-Finland game. I'm breaking out my Miikka Kirprusoff voodoo doll as I type this. Enjoy the Olympic hockey this afternoon and tonight.

So CanadasBest, how do you defend your idols actions of punching someone in their goodies, not once but twice from behind while the player was engaged with another Pen....WOW...that little tantrum showed a hell of a lotta class and respect for the game there....and the amount of overwhleming maturity that action showed as well, you must be so proud! Go back and guard the bridge you left troll.

ABOUT JOEK.

For those who want to know, NO he is NOT a caps fan. He is a Pens fan. And a dumb one at that. A while ago somebody labeled him "Joke" and it's more than appropriate with his idiotic comment about getting rid of foreign players. His comments are always very complimentary of Pens especially Mario and his son (daughter) Cindy. He thinks Boston and Montreal were never really rivals. Mario was the best PKer ever, bench OV blah blah blah. And OV needs to work on his defensive play? That's like saying Erskine needs to work on his offensive play. Why is OV on this team? Oh yeah to score goals. And now his latest is to trade the "foreign players" if we have an early exit from the playoffs this yr. So I'll be the 1st to nominate "Joke" not to the dufus brigade, no not "Joke", he's so good he gets promoted to "troll" of the day!

From the previous post responding to Pens fan puckheaded1: You are a complete HYPOCRITE and don't even try to say you're not. You say we "bash" Crosby and never give him credit... blah, blah, blah. Why don't you cry about it?! PENS FANS DO THE SAME EXACT thing to Ovechkin!!! Do you realize that? You're accusing us of doing the thing that you folks to the BEST. All over Pensblog is Pens fans making fun of Alex Ovechkin, how he looks, how he's a dirty player..and so on. And I've never seen credit given to Ovechkin either. You guys only see it one way but you don't even realize that you do the same exact thing. And it's time for you to get off Capitals Insider since you're obviously too sensitive to take any criticism of your lover.

Ovechkin vs Crosby
Crosby vs Ovechkin

*yawn* I am soooo tired of this.
Wednesday night can't get here soon enough. Thank goodness I have a Bears game to go to this weekend.

all it shows is Caps fans PENS envy, jealousy and inferiority complex, and you all are a pretty sad example of hockey fans. I mean, I'm a huge hockey fan and totally respect Ovie for his phenomenal talents and his flair that he brings to each and every shift. but apparently you are all either too immature, bitter or stupid to do the same for Crosby.

yeah i guess i should just expect a lot less of Capitals fans, apparently they're not capable of any more

Posted by: puckheaded1

We're not that stupid to believe you when you say those things. I'm almost 100% positive after you wrote that you went to Pensblog and wrote crap about Ovechkin.

And richmondphil is exactly right. You think we're the only people that "bash" Crosby? Look around, I think a lot of fans of other teams can't stand the guy. I think Flyers fans are even worse with what they say about Crosby. But go cry about it, if you will. If it bothers you that much.

Okay now I'm done responding! =)

How are the Bears doing, Tess? From the scores, it seems like they may be in a bit of a mini-slump. I guess it's unrealistic to expect them to keep winning every game by 6+ goals. How are our 2 favorite d-men looking?

Well said Rachel216!

Of course the very fact that certain Pens fans feel the overwhelming need to troll here speaks greatly to their own jealously and insecurity, as well as the meaness to their character. Their actions reflect very poorly on them.

@zmega:
Alzner and Carly are looking good. A lot of games Frenchie has them working as a d-pair and they seem to mesh well. Holtby has had a few hiccups in goal lately; got pulled midway through last Sunday's game. But Bacashihua has been strong and picking up the slack. We were hoping to see Neuvy during the Olympic break but his "minor injury" (never did hear what it was) prevented him from playing for us. And of course the offensive firepower is still there...Giroux, Aucoin, Gordon, Bourque, etc. Bears have won 20 in a row at home; that's a new league record. Hope to see them add to it Saturday.

For anyone coming up for the game Saturday, I heard that BB will be there doing a "Gabby" book-signing gig before the game.

He's probably very lonely in life as everything he talks about is negative. He acts like he knows hockey so well and has seen it all yet 99% of what he states is either irrelavant or false. Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 26, 2010 3:35 PM | Report abuse

The reason it's 99% instead of 100% is because he did state that our PK is our biggest weakness. Then again, a blind squirrrel finds a nut every once in a while. Posted by: cbs75 | February 26, 2010 3:46 PM | Report abuse

Rachel when Crosby plays hockey like a man he will get respect. He is improving on that but has a long way to go and the fact that he is improving on it shows everyone agreed it was a problem.

It has nothing to do with insecurity. It has to do with a player getting too much undeserved hype while another gets way too much undeserved criticism. In a town where we never had a superstar like this and he is the best of the best. We deserve him to be treated that way. He is clearly the best player in the world. Just because his name isn't Smith or some Canadian name doesn't mean hockey fans should treat him how they do.

I can remember in Atom and Peewee playing in tournaments where if a team got up by 6 or 7 they wouldn't stop the clock after whistles in order to prevent a massive blowout. The Olympics may wish to consider this method for today's game.

As a Canadian (and obvious Canada supporter) I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the States. They are so fast, move the puck well, and have incredible goaltending. They have been the best team in the tournament since the beginning, and if Canada don't win then I certainly don't mind seeing them get the gold.

From SBJ:

Taking Out The Trash: Milbury Defends Use Of Controversial Term

Milbury Stands Behind Calling Russia's
Performance "Eurotrash"
NBC hockey analyst Mike Milbury appeared on NHL Network's "NHL Live" Thursday and addressed his use of the term “Eurotrash” about the Russian men's hockey team performance against Canada Wednesday. Milbury said, "I sort of just made it up as I was going along. That's really what I do is make it up as I go along. What I meant to say about that being a 'Eurotrash' game was a perimeter game without contact. If you use that definition, no, I don't take it back. If somebody else says there was some other connotation to it I guess I'd have to rethink my position. For right now, it was a dog of a game by the Russians" ("NHL Live," NHL Network, 2/25). Penguins LW Ruslan Fedotenko, a native of Ukraine, said of Milbury's comment, "It's not cool. If he feels that way, it's too bad. But it's just one person, and I'm sure people in the rest of the United States and Canada don't feel that way." NBC was unavailable for comment "regarding possible sanctions against Milbury"

On Long Island, Neil Best wrote Milbury "appeared to be channelling Don Cherry ... who for years has been famously critical of European players." Milbury is "not expected to face any reprimand," but NBC "did not make [him] available for comment Thursday" (NEWSDAY.com, 2/25).

In Boston, Chad Finn writes, "Don't expect NBC to discipline ... Milbury for his comments." NBC pays Milbury "to be opinionated if not outright controversial," and on Wednesday, "he was both" (BOSTON GLOBE, 2/26).

ESPN.com's Gene Wojciechowski said, "He was trying to be like a Don Cherry wanna-be. He was trying to get a reaction, trying to cause controversy." ESPN.com's J.A. Adande: "One of the downsides of the Olympics is that when you bring together all different cultures without cultural awareness, you have some inappropriate comments like this" ("Around The Horn," ESPN, 2/25).

BOSTONIST.com's Matthew Gannon asks, "Has Milbury considered how he'll explain what 'euro-trash game' means to [Bruins D] Zdeno Chara when they get back to Boston?" (BOSTONIST.com, 2/26).

Posted by: Moose33 | February 26, 2010 3:50 PM | Report abuse

If the Russians are Euro trash what does that make the Finns? As great as the US was, the Finns were equally bad.

Mike: I agree with you but you don't need to tell me that. You should tell Pens fans that. But I don't think he will ever get the utmost respect of his peers or fans because of his constant whining and all the other stuff. Until that changes (which I believe it will not change) it will always be the way it is.

I mean wasn't he voted "whiniest" player in the NHL by NHL players a few years ago in Sports Illustrated?

2nd Battalion was the Trolls. The bashers would snipe and get the Caps fans in the open and then the trolls would attack.

3rd Battalion was light artillery to pick off the Caps fans as they scattered.

And that, sir, was the Doofus Brigade. Oh, Brigade HQ had the Doofy Dozen (the 12 players we hated most; yes, Crosby, Orpik and Pronger, and Avery were there), the demolition platoon (people who said Caps should be blown up), the engineers and the supply dept.

We never made anyone Colonel, commanding officer of the Doofus Brigade. However, since we made Don Cherry Doofus Emeritus, I will hereby name Mike Milbury (henceforth known as the "Colonel") CO of the Brigade.

In watching the Olympics, let's not forget that it's the small NHL rink, with NHL officials primarily, in a Canadian city. The US and Canadian rosters are exclusively NHL players, best equipped to play the North American style game. So these Olympics were set up for a US-Canada final. On an actual Olympic rink, you get a different result IMO.

6-0 USA

So, RUS and FIN are in the same eurotrash boat. I suggest, they combine forces now and be united team at the next WC in Germany.
Their united roster will be deep enough to inflict an ultimate evil humiliating revenge to USA and CAN :-)
Well, maybe this will happen without Ovi, as CAPs will be too busy winning SC. But Malkin - Crosby rivalry will be worth to watch :-)

there's a difference between making fun of them and spewing hate.. according to pokerface, Lemieux was not only a lousy hockey player, but a terrible human being as well, total scum

jwash4472: I also found that very funny and pretty telling. I mean, those are NHL PLAYERS voting, not fans. They definitely would know the best. Even Sean Avery only got 7% of the votes. On the flip side, Ovechkin won for player you'd most want to switch lives with. Only 16%, but that's the most.

Mike: No prob. ;)

USA didn't score in the second period! What is wrong with them?! Haha.

Michael: I can't believe Milbury hasn't called them "eurotrash" yet.

I like how Boudreau says " we don't play them anymore", almost like he was implying that the Caps would take a measure of revenge against Jansens

Hello, who on the current Caps roster could really punish a Cam Jansens. We don't have that type of team.

also love how the north americans are pummeling the skilled teams out there. Canada blasts Russia, US is killing Finland. Good ole North American hockey still trumps the uber skilled Euros. Love it!
And David Backes understands how to defeat highly skilled teams:
"They've got the talent to beat anyone in this tournament. We need to make sure we are outworking them to go along with the talent we have in our lineup. I think if we win the work ethic battle, we like our chances. If we don't win the work ethic battle, then it is up in the air and anything can happen."

if I was a Pens fan, I certainly would NOT have had my heart broken listening to Ron Weber when Pat Lafontaine scored the OT goal after one in the morning on that Easter Sunday or when Denis Potvin broke Gussy's leg

that Isles game was one great game top to bottom. One of the few times the Caps got eliminated where I actually felt they played their guts out on every shift in that series. Its a better feeling to have vs thinking your favorite team got eliminated because they slacked off here and there. That Isles game had one of Scott Stevens' greatest (largely) undocumented hits where he leveled Patrick Flatley in open ice in the 1st pd.

So, uhhh, I guess the voodoo doll worked, eh, Tarik? Go USA!

@cstanton - Wasn't Flatley the guy who butt-ended a linesman in the Olympics? Now that's North American hockey.

The Pat Lafontaine game was torture. It went on and on, but you could see the Caps and most of the Islanders gradually slow down as fatigue, and probably cramps, set in. Lafontaine was a little, quick guy, and he was about the only one who could move his legs as the game wore on.

zmega, I don't remember the butt-end but that 4-OT game was torture in the sense that there were so many great scoring chances in OT and you knew it was sudden-death so any close-in scoring play against the Caps was brutal to endure. I just remember the Isles crashing the net time and time again and our defensemen doing whatever they could to protect that crease. They coulda called 30 mins in penalties easy with all the post-whistle scrums that went on every time the goalie covered the puck. Stevens was a beast.

as it figured, it was an Isles forward doing the dirty work in front of our net that screened our goalie when LaFontaine's shot squeezed thru. Just a good old fashioned garbage type goal, nothing fancy about it. And from my recollection, most defining playoff goals are like that. They're usually just the product of grinding down low and someone setting a screen or jamming in a rebound. Its not usually an ultra-pretty give and go, or end to end play that gets you those critical playoff goals.

I've tried to forget about that game but I remember Bob Mason was great in OTs but if my memory serves one of the two goals that the Isles scored in regulation was kinda softie.

I also remember the comments by Lafontaine after the game... his shot went right thru the legs of Kevin Hatcher and then right past Mason and Lafontaine who grew up playing hockey with all of the Hatcher brothers said that he used to skate thru their legs when he was a kid.

HEY JOKE - if you're gonna quote me you should at least do it acurately. I never said anything about his playing EVER, other than he is far from "the best PKer ever" which was your EXACT quote. It's hard to respect a guy when all he does is complain and meet with Bettman every offseason complaining about the league. Sorry if you don't like it go play somewhere else. I'll go out on a limb and state that most Caps fans if given the opportunity to golf with Mario would decline.

You on the other hand have hardly anything good to say about the Caps, you always point out the negative or the problems with our team and you always have such kind things to say about Mario and his daughter. So sorry bud, I was always told if it looks like a penguin, walks like a penguin and talks like a penguin then it's probably a penguin. So you buddy are a Pens fan plain and simple.

Like MNMNT said, I shouldn't even be giving you the time of day but your idiotic remarks are too funny sometimes. You come off like you know so much yet in reality you know very little. But thanks for the advice to trade the "foreign players" on our team. That was one of the best yet. "IGNORE"

Hey P*UCKFACE,

Lemieux is the best PKer that I've ever seen, SO WHAT?? That's just my opinion and if you don't like it, that's your problem.

I'm NOT gonna have my credentials as a Caps fan questioned by a pathetic loser like you who can't see that this is just a game, NOT life or death.
