Boudreau's Other Day Job

While other NHL coaches are vacationing at their summer cottages, Bruce Boudreau is (where else?) on the ice, coaching. This week, it's the 300 hundred kids attending his Golden Horseshoe Hockey School in Ontario.

Here's a little summer reading from this morning's St. Catherines Standard to help you get through this August Friday, which, of course, is smack in the middle of the s l o w e s t week of the hockey calendar:

Boudreau, who spends a good deal of time on the ice and enjoys working with kids, wraps up the hockey school week with a huge banquet.
"It's my favourite day of the year," he said.
"Unless I win a Stanley Cup, it will always be my favourite day."

But instruction from last season's Jack Adams winner isn't all the kids get.

This time around, he had 65 autographed jerseys, more than 100 sticks from NHL stars, such as Jaromir Jagr, Alex Ovechkin and Sidney Crosby, as well as the chance to be a stick boy for a day with the Toronto Maple Leafs and a chance to be a Washington Capital for a day when the Caps visit Buffalo this season.

Thanks for the link, Tarik!
How awesome is our coach? He is so great and such a class act. Why is it not September yet?

He should be in the weight room with Backstrom..

J/K..Thanks for the update.

BAD NEWS, fellow STHs (and those who benefit from their "STH-ness"). I heard from Caps Guest Services - they will NOT be honoring the STH price for extra tickets throughout the season. The only options after 9/12 are tickets at gate prices MINUS all of the Ticketmaster fees, or purchasing a 6 game pack (which is discounted). So be sure to get your orders in by 9/12!!!

Posted by: Boo! | August 8, 2008 11:04 AM | Report abuse

@Tarik

Seriously...can you call Brashear and talk him into letting Backstrom train with him for the next month?

Posted by: SA-Town | August 8, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

@SA-Town,

I call Brashear right after I finish booking all my travel for October. :-) Booking hotels, flights and rental cars could take the rest of the day, though.

Awesome! I going to be a Capital for a day TODAY. That's right, I'm wearing my Lainger jersey to pickup.

can you please give us an update on the roster as of now?

Awesome story. BB is a true class act.

@ Jordan

When and where is pickup? I expect you to block shots like Lainger out there.

Tarik,

Any word on little nicky's offseason regimen? I hope he is not primed for a sophomore slump.

Posted by: O-V-P | August 8, 2008 12:46 PM | Report abuse

@Boo

I dont really have a problem with it. All of those great benefits were only there because the place was 1/2 full. Im sure if attendance is down during the week, they will open it back up for those games. Weekend games should be packed as long as we dont tank it this year.

Posted by: SA-Town | August 8, 2008 12:55 PM | Report abuse

Boo! -

Any comment why this year is different than all of the others. That's definitly (sp?) one of the main reason's I got full season. Since theres always one more late comer to the games...

Boudreau FTW!

Posted by: FTW | August 8, 2008 1:01 PM | Report abuse

Ok Kids. Here's three jersies.

Jagr, Ovie, Cindy.

Which one is not like the other?

I'm a bit sad Gabby would give out a jagr jersey. Cindy I'm OK with, the kids are all canadian... but Jagr. please.

@O-V-P

I trust you haven't seen the pics of Nicky from Sweden.

Slump may not be the appropriate word. :)

MetalCap:
One word - demand.
(Actually, better described in three - SUPPLY and demand.)

I really hope BB has another successful year and can stick around for awhile, cause the man is MONEY! ... I couldn't be happier that we have him in the organization!

Boudreau, is indeed a grass roots hockey guy. It's too bad he's associated with being the Caps "last resort".

Nobody likes to be considered as "settled for"

I wish him the best, despite being looked over in the past for all the wrong reasons, yet another reason for my hate towards front office/owner

Good 'ol Chief... always finding the negative side of things.

didn't you get banned from this board yet???

Posted by: Scofield | August 8, 2008 2:59 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see where Chief originally pointed out Boudreau to us as the better bench boss than Hugs.

Hindsight, my friend, hindsight.

Posted by: keef | August 8, 2008 3:12 PM | Report abuse

I am a little upset that the Penguins games are premium games. I was really going to collect some money from all my casual caps fan friends and get them in the seats. It will be harder to do that now with the higher price. I can understand front office wanting to make all the money they can.

I just cant take 5000 pens fans...It breeds anger.

Do any of you know what Bruce's salary was with the Bears and is now with his new contract? I have never seen it published before and I'm just a little curious. Thanks.

Posted by: Caprat | August 8, 2008 4:29 PM | Report abuse

@ Corndog,

Kettler, tonight. And I block shots, but I don't go down to block shots. They don't pay me enough. In fact, I pay THEM!

My terribly ugly new stick came in the mail yesterday and I can't wait to begin the process of breaking it.

Posted by: Jordan | August 8, 2008 4:30 PM | Report abuse

chief, last time i checked, every other team in the NHL had passed up bruce for many years. give the team credit for hiring him in hershey and having the cajones to bring him up when their most recent history of hiring coaches from the minors has been, well, less than good.

everyone's a genius when looking back in hindsight. if he screws up this year, i'm sure you'll be the first to claim that they should never have hired the guy in the first place.

Tarik-nice find, thanks for posting. Though I have to think being called up to the bigs, winning the division, winning the Jack Adams are better days for Gabby than some banquet. :-)

I've been out of town for a few days and haven't seen my STH packet yet, but I get the gist of the parameters for ordering extra tix. In past seasons there has been a September deadline for purchasing additional tix at the STH price. It was a nice perq for us when they relaxed the rule last season, but I'd rather have a heavy demand for tickets than to be able to call my rep on game day and order up an extra pair of tickets at STH price. I understand the grumbling from new STH because they don't know any different, but this is really just business as usual.

As for the premium games, well, price increases suck but they've been doing this in baseball for a while now. It's part of being a popular team. May as well make some more $$$ off those Pens fans!

Posted by: Jill | August 8, 2008 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Jill:
I am not a new STH. I understand the change (and appreciate the reasoning), I'm just not thrilled that the 08/09 renewal packages said that bene would continue, and now they are saying it will not.

Posted by: Boo! | August 8, 2008 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Boo! - I wasn't referring to you or anyone in particular, just pointing out that the "rules" are not new. I didn't realize that the Caps had promised that STH could buy additional tix at the STH price for the duration of the season. I don't recall the STH benefits since all I really care about is getting my own seats at a substantial discount. However, if a promised benefit is being reneged upon, that's unfortunate and requires clear communication to STHs.

Posted by: Jill | August 8, 2008 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Jill:
I agree. If you still have your renewal package, check it out - it is on the full season ticket holders benefits page.

I'm currently about 3000 miles away from my renewal package but will check it out next week. :-)

http://nhl.fanhouse.com/2008/08/05/fedorov-and-the-500-goal-club/ Anyone think Feds get to 500 this year, I did not know he was so close, maybe this was one reason he did not go back to play in Russia, that and 4 Mill does not hurt.

Posted by: Rich C | August 9, 2008 9:45 AM | Report abuse

@boo

I agree with you. As a long time loyal caps fan they should allow me to buy whatever I want at that STH price. Having to go through ticketmaster is just robbery.

Wow, is the blog down? Did registration start and no one knows how to use it? Is it really that sllooooooww? I don't think I have seen it like this since, well ... ever! Anyway, here's something to chew on - a story on TSN looking back at the Gretzky trade:

Boy, and we think it is going to be weird to see Olie in a different sweater?!?

Posted by: Boo! | August 10, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Ugh...slowest news weekend of the summer. Nothing is happening in the league. THN actually interviewed Greg W - shows how little there is to report on.

Posted by: keef | August 10, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Man, this is brutal. I started checking TSN to see if maybe Sundin had decided what socks to wear when he woke up or if he had decided to go sandals sans socks.
We've got to do something to alleviate the doldrums. Anybody got any brilliant ideas?
There's the obvious Sundin situation we can take bets on. Winner(s) gets bragging rights. Somebody can come up with something ingenious, I know it. We can steal the "Card of the Day" idea. Somebody gets a pack of hockey cards and posts the first card they draw out. Everybody posts reactions. Continues until the pack is empty. I'm even looking forward to the start of classes at this point.

I am still waiting to see if anyone knows anything about the entrance song for the Capitals.

Who picks it and what are the criteria?

What have been the entrance songs in the past? Pretender, Metallica, and I can't remember any more.

Posted by: The One and Only #94 | August 11, 2008 12:05 PM | Report abuse

I know DJ Jordan, who handles the music during the game. I'll try to get ahold of him and see if he knows anything about the entrance song.
