Boudreau's Postgame Quotes

Here are a few excerpts from Coach Bruce Boudreau's postgame press conference:

On the Penguins' onslaught of odd-man rushes: "We were down. You've got to take chances when you're down. I thought we had a little mistake on the first goal with the penalty killing. But the odd-man rushes, like the one on [Sidney] Crosby's goal, we were pressing to get a goal, that's what's going to happen."

On Alex Ovechkin's not-so-great performance tonight: "They were desperate down here. Alex is only human; he can't be unbelievable every night, and if you take analogies of baseball players, they don't hit home runs all the time, they can go eight games and then they'll get three and everyone's back on the bandwagon. Alex is a good player -- he's a great player. He just had one of those nights where he's not going to get three goals."

On goalie Simeon Varlamov: "He struggled. Again, he's human. He hasn't had a bad game. When you look at it, it's his tenth game, I think, in the playoffs, and arguably there were four soft goals out of the five. But he'll bounce back. He's a real competitive guy."

Will he be in net tomorrow night for Game 5? "As far as I'm concerned, yes."

Not a fan of these quotes. Seems like he's still letting this kind of play and effort on the ice slide. I was hoping we'd see more fire from him.

If the Caps don't hustle the next game, the series is over. The Caps have let the Pens climb back in the series. I've watched this too many times in the past. Why do the Caps need pressure to be compeitive? The lack of practices is telling. The Pens have responsed to the Caps and practiced important aspects of the game while the Caps get the day off -- bad idea. Time to get back on the ice and work on schemes. Oh, will someone please tell Semin that we can show up in this series, and tell Kozlov while you are at it?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | May 8, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Jurcina has been far and away our best defenseman. I never would have predicted that, but the playoffs have really exposed the weaknesses of our D. Both the Rags and the Pens have forechecked us to death. We can't get into any kind of offensive flow when we are fumbling around in our own zone for minutes at a time.

I have tickets to tomorrow's game. Tell me why I should be excited...

Posted by: mwalk1 | May 8, 2009 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Not cool laughing at an injury. It looke like he tried to make a move on Ovie and thats how they hit

Anyone think (other than the obvious caps haters) that Ovie went at his knee?

Posted by: CheyenneWY | May 8, 2009 10:42 PM | Report abuse

This team is LUCKY to even be playing in round 2, thanks to torts for benching avery in game 5.

Yeah cause Torts was leading his team in goals and had nothing to do with Lundquist not being able to stop a puck over his glove.

good call. the village called, they want their idiot back

mwalk1: Be very excited. Hockey in May is a gift that we haven't had for a very long time.

Posted by: tess2201 | May 8, 2009 10:44 PM | Report abuse

and when we do clear the zone, we are facing three Pens in the neutral zone who are back because it only takes two of them to successfully forecheck against us.

Posted by: Satts | May 8, 2009 10:44 PM | Report abuse

I also expected Boudreau to come out all indignant and fired up. Interesting. Maybe, unlike all of us fans, he doesn't immediately slip into panic mode when there is a bad turn. Maybe he wants to keep his players from tensing up and giving in to fear. I trust that he knows when it's time for toughness and when it's time for a cool, detached head to prevail.

We will see the Caps' mettle tomorrow.

Ah, Cheef has shown upa fter a loss to tell us what he really thinks. Step away from your moms computer. Come back after a win, fella.

Posted by: oo7 | May 8, 2009 10:45 PM | Report abuse

4 soft goals tonight, that said by the coach.
Everyone said it was 1, thanks for playing.

Posted by: Cheef | May 8, 2009 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Why is Alzner not playing? You can't blame the skilled guys, if the D are passing whiffle balls to them. I would put Fedorov back on D to. He's done almost nothing other than the huge goal in Game 7.

Posted by: JoeWho | May 8, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

The sad thing is...they could have won that game. Fleury only had 22 shots against and 3 went in. Varly was due for a stinker and the boys should have pulled one through for him.

We need Semin to wake up. Ovi probably had his worst game of the season. I'm not asking him to be super human every night but that was a very bad performance in one of the biggest games of his career.

Gotta have a short memory and re-group. Played the 82 game season to earn home ice. It's a best of 3 with two at home if we need them.

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 8, 2009 10:46 PM | Report abuse

@mwalk1 - sell or give your tickets away to someone who wants to enjoy the game - it's entertainment!

Obviously, you need an attitude adjustment. You could be in Afghanistan/Iraq, in the hospital, recently laid off or whatever. Appreciate want you got!

Should have been 2 penalties called right before jurcina goal.

If they can't win the past 2 games with an early lead, they don't deserve to win anymore games.

JILL- I agree on the practices. I dont like the fact that so many options are taken. No more options. Everyone or no one and I lean towards everyone. Practice keeps you sharp. Id rather be a little more tired but sharp, than rested and rusty. The lack of practice has shown in this series. Pens practice, look good, Caps don't and flounder.

I'd rather see BB rest players from time to time during the regular season than make practices optional in the playoffs. Use it as an excuse to try out more of the Hershey prospects during the season.

Posted by: bbposter09 | May 8, 2009 10:52 PM | Report abuse

@Cheef: You are an idiot. You never say anything on these boards when the Caps are up. If you dislike the Caps so badly go buy another team's jersey and leave us alone. Don't bother responding because I won't respond to you again. The Caps are very lucky that Tortorella benched Avery because I think they are going to waive his waiting period to get into the HHOF. Fehr better find another number to wear too because I heard the NHL is going to retire number 16 league wide in honor of Avery. You're a joke Cheef.

Posted by: fanohock1 | May 8, 2009 10:56 PM | Report abuse

Both teams are banged up (like everyone in playoffs) and the Pens are showing they're the better/tougher team.

Caps have zero heart, leading both games and can't win one, no heart.

Hey look Cheef is back. Didnt you learn you lesson from last series you pathetic prick.

Anyways, we played a bad game. They were forchecking ONE guy and we couldnt break out. That needs to be adressed ASAP.

Varly or Theo? Varly looked real tired, he was down in his stance and looked slower. I think you have to lean towards Varly, but its interesting to think about.

The Pens want it more. The Caps need to show some fire and step up.

7 games against no offense rangers, real challenge, especially when Torts hands over the series in game 5.

Lesson ? Only lesson learned will be watching the Caps BLOW 2 game lead and already blown 1-0 lead TWICE in games 3--4

Caps organization is second rate, classless and doomed. I'm loving it

When you play as bad as the Caps did tonight, you have to expect that from pens fans.

Best thing to do is get it back tomorrow on good ice and a friendly crowd.

Hey Bruce. Ovechkin has had two bad nights. He needs to be outstanding at least 50% of the time.

What the hell has Green done to you guys? Jeez, you would have thought he killed your family.

These are the kind of fans we dont need, seriously. The Second goal tonight was all Green fellas.

Yea Im talking to you FancyDan. And others bashing Green for no apparent reason. All the guy did was score 70 points in 60 some games.

Posted by: digster1013 | May 8, 2009 11:20 PM | Report abuse

We spent most of the two last games on the pk.

That limits Ovies time on the ice. We will be better tomorrow

Posted by: CheyenneWY | May 8, 2009 11:21 PM | Report abuse

My theory is that we're not used to scoring early: it confuses us. We fall back into defense. And since we suck at defense, that doesn't work too well for us. Our best defense is to go on the offense.

Anyways, here's a word to all the naysayers, the critics, the nitpickers, the armchair coaches, the giver uppers and the fair weather fans:

We've beat this team before. Six times. We can beat them again. Believe it.

If any of you that watched the CSN broadcast and want to hear what I am talking about listen here: http://www.nhl.tv/team/console.jsp?hlg=20082009,3,224

Where's your team, queef?

Posted by: Chase4 | May 8, 2009 11:57 PM | Report abuse

I sometimes wonder what really is the point of being really good in the regular season and gain all the home ice advantage. Maybe the Carolinas and the Pittsburgh's of the world have the right idea. Fart around for the first half of the regular season. Be just barely in the top 8 and then clean up in the second half and pick up some rent a players at the deadline. (And don't repeat our mistakes of signing any guy over 32 to a 4 year deal.)

I'd say, go ahead and get Backstrom and Semin signed to contract extensions (at least until their 30) or are we ready to dump them?

Posted by: CapsFan75 | May 9, 2009 12:00 AM | Report abuse

Mike Green has been total crap on defense. Can't clear the crease, just stands there doing nothing. Looks clueless.

Posted by: FancyDan | May 9, 2009 12:08 AM | Report abuse

Why does Boudreau keep defending Mike Green? He has played like crap for 10 out of 11 playoff games. Had this been one of the non-Hershey guys, he would've done something about him 7 games ago. If he's hurt, take him out of the game. If not, it's time to take Mr. Green to task. It's getting ridiculous.

Posted by: madden091 | May 9, 2009 1:05 AM | Report abuse

OK, all y'all don't KNOW what Boudreau is saying to Green in the locker room, unless you want to tell me you're all Washington Capitals in disguise. So just STFU about what Boudreau "should" or "shouldn't" be doing. He knows what he's doing. I trust him. Have a little faith!

Posted by: irockthered | May 9, 2009 1:36 AM | Report abuse

In the past, Boudreau has publicly called out other players in his postgame press conference. He even called out Feds publicly after 2 bad games, telling reporters that "He was going to talk to him about that". What makes Green different?

Posted by: madden091 | May 9, 2009 1:57 AM | Report abuse

@irockthered:

Excellent point, so thanks for making it. There's no way to know what Boudreau is saying in the locker room, and he's going to deal with different players differently. Maybe calling out Green in public would do more harm than good. Feds has been doing this forever and can take the criticism. I've never been a big Green fan, but I think there's something going on with him behind the scenes. He's a shell of what he was earlier on. I'm just happy Schutlz isn't a factor!

I'm also amazed that reporters are still asking if Varly will start -- after one bad game! He can't play out of his mind every night anymore than Ovie can score a hat every night. Although, I'm not sure what's behind the response, "As far as I'm concerned, yes" that Varly will play. Makes it sounds like his isn't the only vote. Leonsis has said he has no role in roster decisions. Only McPhee would have the authority to overrule a coach on a roster change, and even GMGM couldn't be that stupid.

Posted by: FedsFan | May 9, 2009 9:35 AM | Report abuse

Anyone else feel like the Caps are playing a regular season style of hockey, while the Pens are have ramped it up and playing true playoff hockey? With the exception of OV and Jurcina (there's a suprise) no one ois hitting. The team is looking to make the "cute" play instead of getting the grinding goals.

Posted by: capsfan2233 | May 9, 2009 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Not a fan of these quotes. Seems like he's still letting this kind of play and effort on the ice slide. I was hoping we'd see more fire from him.

Posted by: CDon | May 8, 2009 10:34 PM | Report abuse

lost in all the Boudreau love over the past 2 yrs is that he has some significant flaws as a coach. He doesn't always play his best lineup, and he frequently downplays real problems that this team has which makes me wonder if he even knows what the real recipe for success is at the nhl level.

He's cost us games with his choices of players to insert into the lineup -- schultz, nylander etc. And he doesn't make good enough adjustments during a game which is why this team can look bad for 45 mins of a game. And he doesn't think enough of defensive hockey, which is why he has Semin and Flash playing the PK or out late in a game where we have the lead.
