Alex Ovechkin participating fully in Capitals' practice

By Katie Carrera

As expected this morning, Alex Ovechkin is participating fully in practice after receiving a cortisone shot in his left arm following Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay, which prohibited him from handling the puck the past two days.

There is a new look to Ovechkin today though as he is skating on the right side of a line with Brooks Laich and Marcus Johansson in practice. Earlier this season, on Nov. 24 against Carolina, Coach Bruce Boudreau put Ovechkin on the right side, rather than his usual left, in an effort to spark the captain. Ovechkin tallied three assists in a 3-2 win over the Hurricanes that game.

Both Matt Hendricks, who also received a cortisone shot this week, and Mathieu Perreault, who had some work done on his broken nose, are taking part in practice after missing Thursday's session with the team.

Here are what the lines look like at KCI this morning:
Semin-Backstrom-Knuble
Laich-Johansson-Ovechkin
Chimera-Beagle-Fehr
Hendricks-Steckel-King or Hendricks-Perreault-Steckel

--After missing the past nine games with a foot infection, Boyd Gordon skated with Matt Bradley (broken finger) ahead of the regularly-scheduled practice. The veteran center has played just 22 games this season.

--In other news around the league, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby missed Pittsburgh's 2-1 shootout loss to Montreal Thursday night with a mild concussion and is expected to be out for at least a week.

Coach Dan Bylsma said Crosby suffered the injury during the Penguins' game against Tampa Bay on Wednesday. Bylsma did not attribute Crosby's concussion to the collision with David Steckel at the end of the second period in the Winter Classic and said that the center did not have any symptoms prior to the contest against the Lightning. The NHL reviewed the contact between Steckel and Crosby and did not discipline the Capitals' center.

Interesting that the Langenbrunner trade was actually made late Thursday morning but approvals were needed because of the Stars' sale.

It's those approvals that are needed which makes signing Richards to a long-term, and expensive extension difficult. Not impossible, but those approving may be loathe to guarantee to pay a player $70M over the length of a deal.

I'd rather see...

Semin-Backstrom-Fehr
Laich-Johansson-Ovechkin
Chimera-Beagle-Knuble
Hendricks-Steckel-King

Assuming Matty P is a no go and Esskay is noshing in the stands.

It is time for BB to start playing King !!

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | January 7, 2011 11:39 AM | Report abuse

I want to see

Semin-Backstrom-Fehr(or Knuble)
Laich-Johansson-Ovechkin
Chimera-Beagle-Knuble(or Fehr)
Hendricks-MP-King

The MP can set up DJK for a hat trick. DJK will have 3 goals, 1 assist and a fight. So he will get a hat trick and a gordie howe hat trick in the same game.

Then he will be scratched by BB for the next game.

Ovi is the man and glad to see he's participating fully in practice. Concerning the last thread, I think Ovi's doing fine as our captain but I wonder if he's struggling (statistically) because of the weight and responsibilities that come with the role.

Patrick Marleau took-off when SJ relieved him of his captainship, and I wonder if Ovi would similarly benefit from a switch. He wouldn't stop being a leader on the team, but it would allow him to focus more on his game and not be distracted by the all the little things captains are responsible for. I miss his old destructive self, it's just a thought.

I Laich these lines...could they be just what the team neads to get OVer the hump and recover their scoring MoJo?

Langenbrunner is a guy the Capitals could have used. Playoff experience, hard nosed veteran with leadership qualities.

Personally I think the Caps need to take a Fehr step Back and realize that they Arnott (just a wish) as Green as they Se(e)m in this league! Leaders need to Chime up and get Matt at their failures, Knubs up, give it their Alzner, and develop thick-Erskine!

puck Fittsburgh, I want the Cup!

I think this team goes as Backstrom goes. Everybody keeps talking about OV. I'm not sure it's all on him. Backy just doesn't seem to have it for whatever reason. I don't know if he's hurt or what but I think his struggles are affecting OV. Both OV & Backy seem to feed off each other and Backy is struggling so it hurts OV. I don't know if it's just a rut he's in or what but I think the key is, if you can get Backy goin, you're probably gonna get out of your goal scoring slump. Just seems to me that last yr almost every game he was making great plays and getting OV the puck in open space and that's not happening this yr for whatever reason. I'm not trying to say none of this is on OV. Some of it obviously is but OV is not getting the puck in open space where he can do what he does best. We've got 3 months to fix it so get on it fellas!

It doesn't appear Langenbrunner cost the Stars a lot...a conditional 3rd rounder?

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 7, 2011 12:21 PM | Report abuse

@RoyHobbs

Rumor was the Caps were trying for him, but Lou wasnt going to trade him to an East Coast team. In fact, the Devils beat reporter said that he was only asked to waive his NTC for 3 West Coast teams. Philly was also trying to get him rumor had it.

Anyone else feel bad for the Devils? On paper they have a good team! At least it puts our troubles in perspective.

Yeah. Except for two things:
1. There is no room for him here.
2. He wasn't offered to the Caps.

Other than that, no problem.

Huh? Exactly why would any of us ever feel bad for the Devils?

Posted by: Wiley_One1 | January 7, 2011 1:21 PM | Report abuse

I don't think GMGM is going to make anymore trades.

Just a hunch. I mean, who would he give up?

Posted by: Jordan_Kitts | January 7, 2011 1:23 PM | Report abuse

If a move for a 2C is going to made I'd rather it be sooner than later. I hate to see GMGM wait until the closing bell at the trade deadline and get another Corvo type. Also this team has always had trouble adjusting to one of their boys being moved (Clark, Fleischmann). If possible do something now so they can get over it before spring.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 7, 2011 1:27 PM | Report abuse

So how long until Arnott is traded? I'm sure NJ would prefer to get him out sooner than later just to save some money.

I think Arnott will be the guy GMGM keys in on(his net presence being another important factor on top of being a #2 center).

The question will be, how much does it cost to get Arnott? I'm guessing not too much, as I don't think there will be a bidding war(he is still too expensive in terms of cap for many contenders) and the Devils just want to get him out to save money.

It should be interesting.

@jordan

Matthieu P. could help out a lower ranked team, teams clearing cap space for next season...Hershey is stocked full of prospects, and quite frankly giving up a couple picks would not be a big deal for this team.

We can also offer up Semin to a team that might want to sign him next season.

Posted by: capscoach | January 7, 2011 1:29 PM | Report abuse

I agree with kbrich - Let's do this sooner rather than later so as to squelch chemistry issues.

I could see Arnott coming our way...

Posted by: Jordan_Kitts | January 7, 2011 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Arnott has a NMC though, so he will only come to a team if he wants to.

Posted by: sgm3 | January 7, 2011 1:36 PM | Report abuse

Arnott would be nice but I just think its doubtful. Look to teams that GMGM has done trades with in the past. And as crazy as it sounds with his comments about our team previously, tominsocal's dreams may come true and RJ Umberger could be coming our way. Just a gut feeling.

I don't feel bad for NJ at all. This was all Lou's doing. Trust me there are many exec's throughout the league that feel they are getting exactly what they deserve.

If you want to feel bad for a franchise, feel bad for the Islanders. This is a very historic franchise with great tradition and success and now due to many factors including Nassau county NOT approving a new arena for them! You're talking about a franchise that might not be the Islanders in the not so distant future. To me I think it's sad because I've known a lot of people that have gone through there and it used to be the class of the NHL etc. Just a shame to see something like that happening. And to have a talent like Tavares just wasting away there should be illegal.

That's a good point. GMGM rarely makes the trade that everyone is expecting(i.e. Chimera and Hannan). It will probably end up being a guy like Umberger or Brad Boyes or someone none of us are thinking of.

With the amount of centers in the Caps system I do not see them trading for a center who has more than 1-year remaining on his contract. So Umberger and Boyes would be possibilities(if their own teams are willing to trade them).

Posted by: sgm3 | January 7, 2011 1:53 PM | Report abuse

Umberger make 3.75 for this season AND the next and is then a UFA. That doesn't sound like the type of contract that GMGM would try and take on at all.

That's not to say that I wouldn't welcome him but it's likely the price will be way too high (think pick, and one of the prospects we all like: Kuznetsov, Eakin). maybe Perreault and a pick or 2 would do it but no way to tell until after it's done... if it's done!

Umberger's stats:

If the stars can get langenbrunner for a 3rd rounder, I think we can get a decent center without having to give up Eakin or Kuznetsov.

Matty P. is a keeper, he is feisty and willing to challenge. Sascha Fierce? I miss him.

PS -- Please don't tell me that Crosby wasn't concussed in the Steckel collision. That's total BS. He was never the same after that. His head didn't hit the ice, but it did collide with Steckel's shoulder at a pretty high speed. If you were watching 24/7 -- look at the locker room clips from the 2nd intermission. He isn't quite himself. Sure the weather and the score didn't help, but neither did getting his eggs scrambled.
