Boyle Apologizes to AO

Alex Ovechkin practiced today with a full plastic face shield attached to his helmet and said he might have to wear the cumbersome cage against the Sabres to protect the 16 stitches he's got on the inside of his bottom lip.

AO was hit unintentionally by the stick of Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle midway through the third period of the Caps' 7-1 victory Sunday afternoon, just as Alexandre Giroux scored the sixth goal.

AO, who was sporting a fat lip and small cut near his chin, said that Boyle text messaged Ben Clymer, who relayed the apology.

"It's not like usual," Ovechkin said of the full cage adding that he had difficulty locating the puck when it was in his skates.

The cage won't be the only thing that could make AO's life difficult in Buffalo tomorrow.

He could spend much of the game matched up against former linemate and mentor Dainius Zubrus, who will likely skate on the right wing of the Sabres' checking line.

Asked if Zubrus might have an advantage because he knows his moves, AO joked: "Sometimes I don't know where I go. So he will never know where I'm going. It will be a fun game if he plays against me because I know his moves, his strong side."

Anyone think OV will knock Zubie on his rear? I have a feeling he might.

As for practice today, it did look like OV fumbled the puck a couple times. But its only practice.

Zubrus will hook AO and get a 2 minute minor, bank on it.

Do you have a working relationship with Dave Fay? Is he as much of a dumbass in person as he appears to be from his articles?

Posted by: Leigh | March 20, 2007 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Good for Boyle. I'm sure that will help make things a bit smoother next time they meet. Tim Taylor, on the other hand, should get himself plastered to the boards a few times by Jurcina.

What EricS said.

...and what Leigh said.

Japer's Rink has a great dissection of the article at

And no, I'm not Japer.

How will Semin follow up on his hat trick?

Posted by: Sanjaya | March 20, 2007 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Semin will probably take the week off, maybe show up for a shift or too.

JK... It'll be good to see him follow it up with another strong performance, especially on the road.

Very classy of Boyle to apologize. I hope Ovie's game isnt affected by the cage and maybe he wont have to wear it. It will be very exciting to see Ovie and Zubrus play against each other. Cant wait!

I don't think Leigh's comment was very nice. Of course Tarik has some sort of a working relationship with Fay. Like all sports journalists, most of what is spewed is subjective (though most journalists these days seem to have abondoned objectitvity). If you don't like the guy, don't read him. But have some class and don't try to drag someone like Tarik in with a lame bait. Ironically, Leigh, you called Fay a dumbass and then came off as one yourself. Well done.

Posted by: Kerplunk | March 21, 2007 2:31 AM | Report abuse

Get over yourself. You always come off as all high and mighty. I'm not naive enough to expect Tarik to respond to my comment. I was just making a comment I expect many people agree with. Read . All Dave Fay does is spew nonsense without doing any research whatsoever. I have no problem with editorials, as long as they make sense, are researched, and items that are claimed to be factual, are indeed factual. Go back and read all of Dave Fay's articles, he clearly has a vendetta of some sort against the organization. He always seems so angry for some reason. Sure, Tarik has come down on the organization many times, but atleast he makes sense, does some research, and doesnt come off as hating his job.

Posted by: Leigh | March 21, 2007 9:10 AM | Report abuse

Ironically, Kerplunk, you called Leigh a dumbass and the came off as one youself.

You're the dumbass if you can't see how stupid Dave Fay's article truly is.

Posted by: Dumbass | March 21, 2007 9:12 AM | Report abuse

Fay's article was exactly what most fans are feeling and thinking. It was an article that needed to be written. Just because the "high and mighty" think "OMG, How could someone write that about my Caps. It could hurt managements feelings", most of the rest of us are fed up with the mis-management of this team.

Fay is cranky at times, no doubt. But he calls it like he sees it. I applaud him for that.

And Tarik, keep up the good work. I love your blogs and in depth reporting.

Anyone know if Fay is even aware of blogs, let alone read a Caps blog like Japers'?

Posted by: wensink | March 21, 2007 9:50 AM | Report abuse

I am one of the people that agrees that the organization has been mishandled to a point, and if big changes arent made this offseason, the organization could toil in obscurity forever. That is not where I disagree with Mr. David Fay. I disagree with many of his baseless, moronic, mis-informed arguments, including, but not limited too:

1) Chastising the organization for not being buyers at the tradeline, even though the team was already deep into its free-fall, and had no chance to go to the playoffs at the time.

2) Saying the only players on the team with measurable skill levels are Ovechkin and Semin. Did he forget about a certain one-time Vezina trophy winner in Olie Kolzig who is clearly immeasurably valuable to this team? How abount Chris Clark who is approaching 30 goals this season? How about some of the young, talented defensemen like Shultz, Green, Morrinson, and Jurcina?

3) Saying that 2 years ago, the Caps and Penguins started at the same level. I would argue that the Penguins had a 2 year headstart at that point considering they had 4 top-5 picks in a row.

4) "word out of Sweden is that Nicklas Backstrom, the Caps' top pick in the draft last summer, might not want to come to the NHL this season or even next season. There goes the theory of a first-line center." Nice source Fay. "Word out of Sweden" is not a source. I think to Fay, "Word out of Sweden" means, "hmmmmm...let's dump on the organization even more, and pretend that someone told me that Backstrom might not come over next season."

These rediculous comments/arguments are all from his most recent article. It's a pattern with Fay at this point.

Posted by: Leigh | March 21, 2007 9:52 AM | Report abuse

SpendSomeMoney, the problem isn't that Fay has written a negative piece, it's that the piece is specious.

It's worth mentioning too that, unlike Tarik (who has also criticized the Caps' organization in the past), Fay does not offer a public forum for the debate of his article.

Posted by: wensink | March 21, 2007 10:08 AM | Report abuse

Fay is a nice guy. You can talk about his articles and not his character because you don't know him.

Posted by: Anonymous | March 21, 2007 10:24 AM | Report abuse

Enjoyed Fay's article. I agree with alot of it. The shame is he is a hockey writer in a non-hockey town. This would be BIG news in a hockey market....not even a blip on the radar in DC .

Posted by: caphcky | March 21, 2007 10:25 AM | Report abuse

Leigh:A newspaper in Sweden has confirmed that Backstrom is coming to the US next year. His agent says that considering the Caps interest it should not be hard to get a deal done. Some much for Fay's "sources"

Posted by: eric | March 21, 2007 10:32 AM | Report abuse

I appreciate the heads up, but what's the newspaper in Sweden? Without that, your comment isn't much different then what Dave Fay said in his article.....

Posted by: Leigh | March 21, 2007 10:35 AM | Report abuse

Fay called Ted out and Ted's blog on the website was laugh out loud funny.

I've been critical of this man and his organization both in person and online (responding to his blog) and he is such a fraud, he doesn't post all the responses. Only the ones that he agrees with and the ones that make him look good.

Fay called him out and we'll see this summer if he's going to be true to his word or just a cyber fraud

Posted by: caphcky | March 21, 2007 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Wensink, is that a reference to the great old Bruin form the 70's, made famous when he challenged the entire North Stars bench after a brawl?
(What can't you find on YouTube?)

Leigh, the Swedish newspaper that Eric was referring to was discussed at Japers' this morning.

Posted by: Chumas | March 21, 2007 10:56 AM | Report abuse

The very same, Chumas. Nice call. And thanks for that YouTube clip. I haven't seen that footage in probably 25 years. He was a remarkable player.

Posted by: Wensink | March 21, 2007 11:03 AM | Report abuse

Thanks Chumas! It's nice to see that 'Japer' actually did some research before posting his comment *ahem* Fay.

It's exciting to see that Backstrom will be joining the team next season, and hopefully centering a prolific second scoring line with Semin and Fleishman as his wings.

Posted by: Leigh | March 21, 2007 11:05 AM | Report abuse

Fay article was crap, not for the opinion, but because it took a giant dook all over journalism. about that Caps - 'LectroSlugs game tonight? 4th line center Novotny comes to the Caps and barely looks worthy of 4th line center. 1st line center Zubrus (who projected here as 2nd line RW) barely hanging in as a 3rd line right wing in Buffalo.

I'm guessing Zubie won't get 3mil/5yrs as a checking line RW. Maybe he comes back to the Caps after all, but more like 2.5m/3y.

I'm most interested in a possible Semin FlashBack line. Semin-Backstrom-Fleischman.

Fay expressed his opinion. What's the problem with that? The fact that most of the hippies don't agree with it?

True, Dave Fay had cancer, and that's awful for any person or their familes to have to go through and I wish him all the luck in the workd for his continued recovery. But what does that have to with him being an awful reporter?

Posted by: Leigh | March 21, 2007 12:22 PM | Report abuse

People are allowed their own opinions, but Fay's "facts" seem far from accurate. The easiest one to point out is comparing the Caps and the Pens, saying they started rebuilding at the same time. There's no question Fay didn't check on that, while treating his comment as a fact. That is why (parts of) the article deserve/s to be ripped.

Mr Fay is more than welcoem to his opinion on the state of the team, and it's certainly not in the best shape right now, but his article bunk. It's somewhere betwene poorly researched and not even researched at all, and his opinions are belied by facts of the situation. In addition, if he wanted to write a sports opinion collum about the team that's one thing, but he wrote it as the feature write-up on the team in the regular article space. It's not the same thing as writing an opinion collum and the Time's should know that.

Funny, our resident haterade chuggers were no where to be found yesterday when things were all smiles, and today they're all over the place. Funny, and yet sad at the same time.

alexovetjin: What does cancer have to do with tossing journalism in the dustbin? I feel for Mr. Fay having to deal with this personal tragedy but it has nothing to do with this.

I had pneumonia (still recovering) so posting here was not my top priority. But is you still want to hear my thoughts I will lay them out for you. I think the wins will be used as an excuse not to get top people to join this club. Ted will say "We know we have the depth, our young guys will improve, we don't need anyone... bla bla bla..." To that I say "even an unloaded gun will fire once." Good for the Caps to move closer to the 70 point mark. But the problems of this team are evident.

As for Mr. Fay, having something to compare to Ted's pink-glass-wearing outlook is refreshing. Fay has been doing his job for a long time. I would not question his experience. Moreover, I think he cares about this team more than you think. Hence the article.

P.S. I did not find any postings on Ted's blog when the team was losing so bad.... Why is that? And yes, it is true, TED DOES NOT PUBLISH COMMENTS FROM POSTERS WHO CRITICIZE HIM!

enough press, and now Fay rips the

Thats just laugh out loud funny!

Posted by: caphcky | March 21, 2007 1:00 PM | Report abuse

Just read Fay's the article without bloggers' comments. It all makes sense. I am not surprised that Ted is surprosed. He thinks thigs are going great.

Posted by: Finn | March 21, 2007 1:12 PM | Report abuse

It's bunk because Fay is an idiot who can't even fact check and he put out an editorial as a feature. Knowing that Finn & Caphcky would be all over his teat was not hard to predict. Dumb people like recklessly authoritative people, facts are for hippies, etc.

Is it obvious that we should have added players at the trade deadline? For our playoff push (cough)? Or because that's when you get good value as a buyer (duh)?

Obvious that Backstrom won't be here next season even though he's negotiating right now?

Fay has been around hockey far too long to be this stupid. That's what really puzzles me. Finn is apparently 10 based on his reading comprehension. Caphcky - I know you to be pessimistic about the Caps for a long time in multiple message boards, but you should know better. Look at the facts versus Fay. The opinion is somewhat understandable but don't ignore the obvious.

Posted by: Shmoo | March 21, 2007 1:16 PM | Report abuse

Fay's article was flat out wrong on many levels, except the main nugget that the caps have holes that they will need to spend to fill with quality guys this summer. Thats like a peanut in a turd. Sure its a peanut... but its in a turd

Posted by: Goat | March 21, 2007 1:28 PM | Report abuse

The OBVIOUS is you don't know me and the article is not the issue. The article is his take on whats going on with an organization that has gone NOWHERE for a long time for many reasons.

I don't think I'm pessimistic about the Caps at all. The FACTS ARE that this team
is building AGAIN and the scouting staff still have jobs. Like Fay says, once you get past the Alex duo, you got AHL talent.

The thing is NOW what is the fat man going to do about it?

Posted by: caphcky | March 21, 2007 2:05 PM | Report abuse

Sorry Goat, but it gets really old having to deal with the same bass ackwards posts from the same people over and over and over and over again. I really just don't understand why they hate so much on the team, the owners and anyone think that they just might know what they're doing.

And, to reitterate, that was a really classy thing for Boyle to do. I wish we got alot more of that in the NHL and alot less of the cheap hits and retaliation.
