Brashear Getting Close

Donald Brashear began practice today on the fourth line and was hoping to be able to last the entire session. But after about 20 minutes, the veteran enforcer knew his knee wasn't quite ready.

"It's better," he said this afternoon. "But once we got to the physical stuff, it's not there yet. I still tweak it here and there. Even though I was skating out there, and you couldn't really tell, I tweaked it a couple of times."

Brashear has missed eight straight games with a sprained ACL in his left knee. And it's looking like he'll miss Wednesday's meeting with the Islanders, too. Coach Bruce Boudreau said he expects the team to promote a forward from Hershey, though he wasn't more specific.

I'm thinking Keith Aucoin has earned another stint in Washington, but I guess we'll have to wait until tomorrow morning for confirmation.

"I'm really day-to-day," Brashear said, adding that he hopes to practice again tomorrow. "The last three days are the days I have felt the most improvement. And today was the best of the three days."

Why rush it? Sure, we need a healthy Brash for the playoffs but not any games until then. Knowing the calls ups are gritty eases the lack of punch, IMO

@Sonyask

You're right, according to ESPN the tiebreakers are:
--
In the event teams are tied in the standings, the following tiebreakers are applied to determine which team receives the higher seeding.

1. The fewer number of games played (i.e., superior points percentage).

2. The greater number of games won.

3. The greater number of points earned in games between the tied clubs. If two clubs are tied, and have not played an equal number of home games against each other, points earned in the first game played in the city that had the extra game shall not be included. If more than two clubs are tied, the higher percentage of available points earned in games among those clubs, and not including any "odd" games, shall be used to determine the standing.

4. Goal differential
--

So the Caps need to win the division on points, as Carolina takes the head-to-head tiebreaker by virtue of their OTL.

(Ooops, didn't mean to hit submit)

But if my math is correct, all the Caps need to do to clinch is win on Wednesday and then take a single point from any of their last 5 games.

Posted by: spacecadetkid | March 30, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

Spacecadet that is correct, or we win one and caralina loses one.

Are you kidding me, we're changing lines again? When is this team gonna figure out some chemistry? Not a good sign this close to the playoffs and we still don't have lines established.

Posted by: ParticipatoryDemocracyNow | March 30, 2009 1:36 PM

Chemistry will NEVER come to the NO CUP CAPS . Players are allowed to sit out when they want! ...with this team rest assured they will be firing on one cylinder entering the play off

Go-Coin! From my vantage point Fri. night, Aucoin was cookin! His one point was only one of several very nice feeds. I'd love to see him again

Get better Brash, but don't hurry...

Posted by: Sonyask | March 30, 2009 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Hey can anyone tell me if there is college hockey on tonight?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 30, 2009 2:36 PM | Report abuse

IzzySez:
Brash is not much of a playoff guy ... he didn't seem to get a lot of post-season minutes last year (and, if memory serves, did not fight at all during the series).

Posted by: Boo- | March 30, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

rachel, no college hockey tonight. No games until the 9th, when they will be at the Verizon Center!

I hope everyone got hooked on college hockey this weekend. What fun it was, even if my bracket is a disaster! way more fun than basketball, imo.

Not for the men -- the frozen four is set and begins in about 10 days.

Posted by: Sonyask | March 30, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Oh, thanks RedBirdie and Sonyask. I forgot there was Rangers/Devils tonight, so I'll be watching that then. Go Rangers!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 30, 2009 2:52 PM | Report abuse

Wow, a lot going on today! Gordon and Brash out and Green sick too? yikes. Who runs vicks all over the sick guys? poor bastard.

BOO- Brash had a goal in the first game last year (I think it was the 1 at). He's good for a goal a series. I hope to see more fights this year. no more running over our goalie, though the refs opted not to call the contact on theo last Friday, despite butchering the nylander on McKenna call.
I'd like to see more of Osala.

Boo, been my experience that there is very little fighting, if any, in the playoffs.

redbudsie, you mean the one off clopper? the whole game?

sorry, redbirdie, my auto correct decided you were a Russian bud drinker.

Posted by: oo7 | March 30, 2009 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Brash did score the first goal of the series last year.

just sayin.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 30, 2009 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Brashear's due for a goal. Not sure it'll get a Pothier ovation, but it'd be a nice way to return when he does... We need to keep up the garbage goals and the secondary scoring.

Posted by: Sonyask | March 30, 2009 3:11 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, have you heard anything about the Caps signing Joe Finley now that his college season is over. I was thinking he could get a couple of games in at Hershey.

Posted by: 4capitals | March 30, 2009 3:27 PM | Report abuse

Oh that's right - Brash did score a goal in the PO last year ... forgot about that! But still, POs seems to be non-fighting events w/o a lot of rough stuff (other than our gaolie getting run over), so I doubt he will see a lot of ice time even if he is healthy.

Posted by: Boo- | March 30, 2009 3:29 PM | Report abuse

oo7, yeah, the dogfish off clopper road. Sometimes the game isn't on when I get there, but I'm a monday regular (burger special night!) and the lovely ladies that tend bar let me put the hockey game on, even at the height of monday night football season.

If that game isn't on when you get there, just ask. One the of bartenders is a HUGE hockey fan and will always put the game on. She'll even discuss the Caps with you.

And no worries, I kinda like being "redbudsie"! awesomeness. Redbudsie ess rooosian bird!

Posted by: RedBirdie | March 30, 2009 3:36 PM | Report abuse

Boo, I was thinking about that. Is this team more successful when they are rolling 4 lines? If so, I think he'll get more than he did last year. They need to keep the top two lines fresh, given the dearth in secondary scoring, no? Plus, they need the 4th line to bang bodies up. If they learned anything last year, I hope it was to bang up their opponents bodies before their opponents do it to them. Both Mo and Green were injured last year. We really can't afford to lose Green this year.

redbirdie, very cool. I wont be able to make it until the second intermission, in all likelihood, but will try. I could use the hour out.

new powerrankings up at espn, caps to 3rd: http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/powerranking

however, this might be the msot heartfelt thing ever written on an espn hcokey page: "Capitals defenseman Brian Pothier's first goal since Dec. 27, 2007, against the Lightning on Friday was a special one in Washington's season that has been full of great moments -- and likely has more to come."

Good point, although I need to look at the minutes from last season - I think the big boys got most of the time (like ridiculously so). Do you recall?

From the previous, previous, previous ...

Joe/Tim:
Thanks so much - I appreciate that!! :-)

Posted by: congero | March 30, 2009 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, whatever...I just think you're wasting your time and ours bad-mouthing the Caps with these disruptive posts. The difference between you and I is that I prefer to engage fellow CAPS fans (emphasis mine) in discussions where we may agree, or we may choose to disagree with no ill feelings either way. You, on the other hand, with your "NO CUP CAPS" nonsense, are simply spoiling for a fight that most of us are unwilling to engage in...because you're wrong!

Saying that the Caps will "never" win the Stanley Cup is the same as claiming that victory is certain for any team: it is unproductive at best and delusional at worst.

The neat thing about ATW's is that they ONLY work on trolls. There is a fine line between constructive discussion of ways in which we think the Caps could improve, and simply tearing them down with ill-considered and inflammatory statements.

When you have something genuinely constructive to say, we'll be happy to hear (and acknowledge) it. Otherwise, just go away.

Honestly, I'd rather you chose the former, but if you can't, just go away.

Brashear's presence is there for more than just fighting. Things do get rough in the playoffs, he's there to neutralize that if our skill guys get pushed around too much, he's there for his ability to stir up trouble around the other net which always seems to give his team a mental boost when he's scrumming around and pushing their D all over the place. And don't forget, he scored our 1st goal in last yr's playoffs :)

all kidding aside, Brashear isn't the perfect tough guy by any stretch because he's super slow on the forecheck and he can't hit like other teams' 4th line guys. But just having him in the lineup is a boost to this team's fragile confidence in physical games, and if we're up by a few goals or down by a few goals he can assert himself on the ice in a specific situation that calls for it. Maybe the other team is trying to send us a msg by running us and we put him on the ice to send them back a msg or whatever.

I LOVE it! That ATW is genius! Though I'm a bit dismayed that we still don't have an explanation why the troll is still a trog. My condolences to the mentally disabled who were insulted by being compared to that trog. Let's GOO Caps!
