Brooks Laich not on the ice for practice

By Katie Carrera

Capitals practice has just started here at KCI and Brooks Laich is not in attendance. I'll have an update on his status after the workout but this is unusual for Laich, who almost always takes part in practice even when it's an optional session.

--Michal Neuvirth is skating with the rest of the team for the first time since leaving the Flyers game back on Jan. 18 and Alexander Semin has remained on the ice for the main practice after exchanging his yellow, no-contact jersey for a gray one.

--Tyler Sloan has returned to Washington after his conditioning stint in Hershey.

--Tom Poti and Eric Fehr are both off the ice.

After all of that here are the Capitals' line combinations for this evening practice:
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Chimera-Perreault-Semin
Hendricks-Johansson-Gordon
King-Steckel-Bradley

Schultz-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Hannan
Sloan

Green and Hannan was a good pairing. Which we could have stuck with that one.

Brooks Laich not on the ice for practice....Uh oh. :/

McPhee traded Laich, Fehr and Poti for the concussed Sidney Crosby.

Schultz is awesome though. Nevermind that he is slower than molasses and softer than a marshmallow, his positioning is awesome and he's great with his stick.

I don't know about y'all but I just love watching 55 have 3 steps on an opposing forward and lose a race to what would have been an iced puck.

laich is the new optional? where is soaringcaps when you need him

Laich is missing. Addition by subtraction.

Beagle isn't back?? No reason King should be on the ice instead of him.

Of all our expendable players, Laich is clearly the best. At times he's even appeared to be non-expendable.

He's really the only roster player we can trade where we can get back more than what we give up.

I came across this when googling for Jeff Shultz pics:

http://capitals.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=463249

It's an article from '08 but the scouting stuff is from '04.

Some gems...

On Ovechkin: "He plays both ends of the ice capably and actually enjoys his defensive responsibilities... he is a complete player. That’s the best way to describe him."

On Schultz: " The Caps see Schultz adding more bulk and muscle to his already hulking frame and hope he can develop into a strong two-way defenseman."

"I think as Jeff Schultz matures into that body he is going to get more strength and getting more strength will give him more confidence, and having more strength and more confidence should allow him to be a little more confident in some of those physical confrontations."

"Schultz on which NHL defenseman he compares himself to: “I think Wade Redden. He is real poised with the puck, makes the smart play with the puck all the time. He likes the offensive and defensive sides of the game and I try to play like him."

On Bourque: " He reminds some of former Capitals great Dale Hunter with his size and his tenacity and edge on the ice."

lol...

OV - Backstrom - Knuble. That sounds like a potent scoring line. How did BB think of that combo?

Be glad, Craps fans. King may actually whack someone good. Then you can laugh at me.

--------
He's a mad, mad scientist with those line combos.

Posted by: Hatfield223 | January 31, 2011 6:13 PM | Report abuse

I have no idea why BB hasn't used the most obvious 1st line:

DJK/Hendricks/Erskine

That line would dominate and score at will. All opponents would tremble in fear of being destroyed and the ice would be all theirs. The goalie would curl up into the fetal position in the corner of the ice in fear of being destroyed by the indestructible greatness of DJK and Erskine. This would then lead to many wide open nets.

The Caps would win games around 80-0. I guess some would be lower scoring, around 5-0, just because the other team would forefeit in the first 5 minutes of the game.

BB, GET IT DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Laich has appeared to be missing from the ice during games lately, even when he's actually out there. Now this. Maybe he's hurt, or maybe he's just caught the same attitude as the rest of these guys. Good thing we've got a good coach who knows how discipline and motivate players so that...oh wait...

Both Laich AND Chimy need their "hands of concrete" looked at by a specialist.

@sgm3

Funny post !
So what is your solution to the softness on this team. Can't win the Big Ugly and be this soft.

Actually putting a grinder like Hendricks
in with Ovi and Backy may force them to start playing "hockey" again. Backy looks like he's playing in the Swedish Elite league with his refusal to crash that slot like the 3 Pens centers do on their way to a cup !

I will be more than glad to trade Fehr Laich, Semin, and 2-3 first round picks for Crosby. Heck I will even throw on Poti, MP, and Boyd Gordon.

Yea, so would anybody. I'd trade Ovechkin and Semin for even a permanently concussed Crosby.

Crosby as the 1C, Backstrom as the 2C and Green, Carlson, Alzner would be a good foundation to build upon.

Any update on Laich?

Posted by: Hatfield223 | January 31, 2011 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Laich had a delayed flight coming back from from all star break. If he can't get into town tonight, I bet he won't make it back for tomorrow's game.

Posted by: MattBradley10 | January 31, 2011 7:18 PM | Report abuse

tmac2yao--

Please. an off year, even a half dozen, does not alter the Crysby-OV debate.

Crosby is such a baby, he's a disgrace to hockey tradition. The Rocket rolls in his grave at his whining. Howe said its a man's game-- Crosby brings shame to the Pens. Management should sit him down and tell him, and sit him until he gets it. Cannot believe Lemeiux has not put an end to it by now. Bylsma-- he's a figurehead to it all.

I'll take OV always, regardless, before that. Crosby is Pittsburgh's Snyder, their unfortunate reality

Unintentional comedy at its best. Thanks, capfan7.

Question: why was practice at 5:00 p.m. today? That's definitely unusual.

Now next question. If Semin was wearing a "no contact" jersey, does that mean he's not yet ready to play?

I'm assuming Brooks Laich will make it into town tonight somehow and that he'll play in tomorrow's game, presumably on the line with Chimmer and Perreault -- except that Brooksie's usually a LW and so is Chimmer.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | January 31, 2011 7:32 PM | Report abuse

What I'd really to do is trade McPhee for an elite GM. I think having a top of the line GM is even more important than having an elite player. Any team can suck and acquire top picks. Not every GM is capable of using the same available resources to build an optimal and balanced set of role players.

probably to allow everyone time for travel today due to the ASG break

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 31, 2011 7:57 PM | Report abuse

I'm assuming Brooks' flight got delayed from Regina, Sk where he went for the all-star break to visit family and friends because of the snow there and will fly in sometime tonight and be playing in the game tomorrow. If he's in town by gametime tom, he'll play in the game for sure....this is Montreal we are talking about and he was really looking forward to playing them this season after they eliminated us from the playoffs last year.
He'll either play on the 2nd or 3rd line depending on whether Semin plays or not. Brooks usually plays left wing, but he has played right wing and center on occasion.

Though Semin wore the non-contact gold jersey before practice when skating around with Fehr and Poti he changed to a gray jersey, on the 2nd line paired with Chimera and Semin, for practice and he practiced fully with his teammates so I think he is good to go tom and if not definitely will play on Friday....probably will be a game time decision for him with him taking the pre-game warmups to test his body.

As much as I post about Cindy Crysby & her whining, I would take her in a second if I was starting a team. She works like crazy & is a good teammate. Cindy Crysby is the best player in hockey, as much as I hate to admit it.

Yes you would take Crosby. You can tell he has an actual work ethic unlike OVI. Caps fans lets be fair. Crosby may whine but most superstars always play the refs. Crosby improved upon his weaknesses. He stunk at faceoffs but worked hard to improve. Guess what he got better. His shot needed improvement and he worked and got better. His defensive play at times was a liability and he became more disciplined. He also went to two Cup finals and made every player around him better. He also has a better coach and a much more intimadating lineup around him. What exactly has OVI gotten better at. As much is I love OVI I can not think of much. His play is going the other direction. And Backstrom looks dreadful compared to last year. He was playing for a contract. Now he can relax. Also Crosby plays a more challenging position than OVI. It is like comparing a shortstop to a first baseman. On another not Crosby has more toughness in his big toe than any of us. All hockey players at this level are tough as nails. Can anyone imagine Crosby and OVI on the same line. I woukd trade half the Caps and the next four years of draft picks to see that.

Posted by: pkme | January 31, 2011 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Crosby may well be the best player in hockey (at the moment) but we don't want him on the Caps do we? To even say that is hockey blasphemy.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | January 31, 2011 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Andrew Gordon had nothing but good things to say about Crosby.

Regardless, if we had drafted Crosby years ago and he did the same things he's done that people criticize, Caps fans would defend him to the grave.

When it comes down it, biases and haters aside, Crosby is simply a better and more complete hockey player that is an elite player at a more valuable position.

I'd rather have Crosby and Backstrom than Crosby and Ovechkin.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 31, 2011 9:25 PM | Report abuse

At no point would I ever want Crosby to become a Capital. I am also very happy that Ovie is a Cap and wouldn't trade him for any player in the NHL.

Others may think differently, but that is how I feel.

I would trade OVI for Zetterberg and Datsyuk in a second. The Caps would actually win a Cup. It would be worth some of the downside because of their respective ages.

Posted by: pkme | January 31, 2011 9:42 PM | Report abuse

I can't think of any player who could have been a better representative of the team and the community as well as being a great player than Mike Gartner.

But in the end Poile had to pull the trigger and trade him to get a better playoff scorer. Players come and go, that's just how it is.

Posted by: joek443 | January 31, 2011 9:45 PM | Report abuse

I would trade OVI and throw in a 1st round and 2nd round pick for Mike Richards and Jeff Carter.

Posted by: pkme | January 31, 2011 9:47 PM | Report abuse

Can anyone off the top of your head name the players on The Cup winners in Tampa, Carolina or the Stars? Without looking this up. How about the Devis? Do not mention Marty or Scotty on the Devils. That is too easy.

Posted by: pkme | January 31, 2011 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Me too, pkme... without hesitation.

I'd certainly be down with your first proposal as well but I'd rather fleece some other team for younger players. I don't think it'd be worth the downside given that McPhee has us in this eternal rebuilding phase.

The core of our defense is ridiculously young, as are our goalies.

I would very much be down with building around Backstrom, Richards, Carter, Green, Carlson and Alzner in addition to whoever wins out among the 3 current goalies down the line.

As much as I love Datsyuk's game (he's far and away my favorite non-Caps player), I just wouldn't want to waste a valuable asset like Ovechkin for players that will be too old by the time the remainder of the core players hit their primes.

I would never trade Alzner, Backstrom, Green or Carlson. All the Green bashers will come out on this one. He really is one of the top five defenseman in the NHL. Notice The Pens in 24/7 talking about making 52 pay. They did not talk about anyone else. And Carlson and Alzner will be the best defensive duo for the next decade. I think they are that good and will get better. And Backstrom can at least play every aspect of the game unlike OVI. When was the last time you saw OVI on a penalty kill. Or when was the last time you saw OVI on a key defensive situation. I love it when BB puts the least defensive oriented player on empty net situations when we are up by one. Just got to pad those stats.

Are you an employee of the Caps? So the Caps are just perfect the way they are. Now I know. Listen I wish to be wrong and I want to eat every word that I have written or spoken by I will not. The Bruins, Flyers, and Pens are better than the Capitals. Also Carolina and Bolts are moving up in the world. the Caps are staying the same and it shows. We lost four games to The Thrashers. Ignore reality. Maybe The Caps need something to make them stronger and have higher endurance and quicker heal times.

Posted by: pkme | January 31, 2011 11:02 PM | Report abuse

Is this a nine year rebuild. How long did it take Joe Gibbs and Bobby Bethard to rebuild the Redskins. Not long. Granted there are differences between football. You need 53 players on the team vesus 20. More moving parts and greater vision from coaching and management is needed. Mcphee has been here too long and most NHL coaches last about 2.5 years.
