Bruce Boudreau talks about bringing new players into the fold after trades

By Katie Carrera

While the Capitals have yet to make a move with the trade deadline looming on Feb. 28 at 3 p.m., they have plenty of experience -- with mixed reviews -- trying to integrate players with only 20 or so games remaining in the regular season.

With the exception of 2009, when General Manager George McPhee stood pat at the trade deadline, Washington brought multiple players in at the deadline two out of the last three seasons.

In 2008 it was blockbuster impact deals to acquire Sergei Fedorov, Cristobal Huet and Matt Cooke. Those three players helped propel the Capitals into the playoffs the year that Coach Bruce Boudreau took the helm midseason, and they all fit in well to have an immediate effect on the team.

Last season the same results weren't really apparent, despite a flurry of trades. The Capitals picked up Joe Corvo, Scott Walker, Eric Belanger and Milan Jurcina at the 2010 deadline but of those four players arguably only Belanger was able to mesh with Washington and add a significant boost.

"I don't think it was too much for any of us to handle," Boudreau said when asked if there were too many changes made last year at the deadline. "I thought we handled it as well as we could. If anything was too much, we had too many good players sitting out every night, but that was great depth as well. If we had made it by the first round people would be saying: 'Well jeez, it's good we had the depth.'"

Boudreau said that while some players will fit better than others in a new team, he doesn't believe it's overly difficult for new faces to assimilate into the room.

"I don't think it should be tough," Boudreau said. "Sometimes it's tougher for some guys because they're leaving a family behind at this stage and maybe they've got more on their minds -- if it's the last year of their deal -- to fit in.

"But some guys fit right in, in that they've really not liked where they've been and they can't wait for the breath of fresh air to come their way."

i'm laughing at all these trade scenarios you posters are mulling. do you think the other GMs are morons? MP and Beagle for top line quality. C'mon. Beagle and MP are nowhere close to Neal who went to Pitt. This team has some great talent in the pipeline, but what we have seen this season is that while we have a couple of great guys in beags, mp, and gordo they aren't much more than 4th line contrib. and we aren't going to get much trading those guys. And Pat, while you portend to have some inside scoops, you also caveat everything with the exact opposite scenario, making you worse than the meteorologists that drum up excitement when a windstorm blows in. Love the caps! Lett's drop the puck and where is doughless when you need him.

Posted by: mekongplease | February 25, 2011 12:40 PM | Report abuse

Just to add to the Stastny/Semin debate. I can tell you that it wouldn't take Semin to snatch him. It will take some assets and it will take current players but Semin can stay (and will want to even more).

I'm debating how I want to say this. Lets try this, GMGM is looking to make a very significant move. Plan "A" has a player on a team that has yet to go into "sell" mode as they want to see how their games go over the wkend as they're still in the playoff hunt. Plan "B" is a significant move and this player is available. There is some "framework" and "interest" on both sides.

So all of that being said, I'm guessing that if plan "A" is gonna go down it won't until Monday due to the other team wanting to take the wkend to decide on if they will buy or sell.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 25, 2011 12:47 PM | Report abuse

@poker, any chance you could give us some idea what team "B" might have interest in on our side. Don't have to have names but are we talking top picks, mid picks, top prospects, lower prospects or roster players? If you can't answer I understand.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 12:49 PM | Report abuse

@mekongplease (love the name)

It is common here for people to think B Gordon and a 20th round pick can fetch Spezza. Ever heard the saying "your trash is somebody elses treasure"? LOL! :)

Can't answer because he/she doesn't know. Just like mice following the cheese.

lol

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 25, 2011 12:54 PM | Report abuse

Nah, this is fairly ok I think. Both scenarios have talked about players from our roster. It wouldn't be just prospects/picks if that helps.

I would never mention names out of respect for the player(s) involved. What if what I hear is wrong or I misinterpret something? That's why I have to leave things broad at times like when I said "go west" when referring to a 2C.

Some people dont understand that. One if you name names and the person actually feeding you the info sees you post it, he will get pissed and stop feeding you the info. People will be surprised how many people that work for the Caps read the comments on this and other blogs.

the bottom line is that both STL and colorado are out of the playoffs. what puzzles me is this constant rumor on vokoun. does not make sense

Interesting, the Panther's trade, I figured they would be getting picks this deadline not trading them away.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 1:05 PM | Report abuse

even i wouldn't suggest that MP85 or jay beagle would fetch a first or second line forward. I am stying out of this because I believe either no trades will occur or McDummy will pull in some run of the mill veteran.

I was hoping they would have added something early in the season, not last minute.

Adam Foote to Philly.

Makes sense after they lost Bartulis.

Come on GMGM let's get a deal done!

Posted by: digster1013 | February 25, 2011 1:10 PM | Report abuse

@ThePat

For me, I don't know that that's a big concern with me. Not saying that's bad or good, it's just not something that's really "talked" about in my circles. Unwritten rule maybe? I mean the way I look at it is I'm not a journalist so I don't have a reputation or career on the line so in that respect I could say who told me "x" and etc etc etc.

My deal is more with the players. In today's world let's say I put on here or "tweeted" that player "x" got traded. Somebody sees that and starts calling said player or who knows? Maybe their wife! It's happened that's why I bring that up! LOL!

While I don't have a journalistic reputation on the line, I think there's a level of respect you have to have in general. Anytime people don't want to hear it I can stop. I'm not doing it for any agenda. Maybe it's kinda boring in Colorado for a Caps fan and this is where I find my "Caps commradere" so to say.

Heck if I said Cody Eakin or Evgeny Kuznetsov out here somebody would ask me "what hurts, huh?"!

@Poker and Pat, do both plans involve a 2C? I know at one point either you or Pat or both mentioned a move that didn't involve a 2C. Was/is that still a seperate deal and does it hinge on plans A or B?

Posted by: Chucks20707 | February 25, 2011 1:26 PM | Report abuse

@ThePat

Not only that but I don't mention 1/2 the stuff I get. I typically don't post anything outside of Caps b/c why would you care?Understand it comes more from a ref/coaching standpoint so it's so different. I'll get a text when somebody's getting ready to get traded and it'll be something to the effect of, "remember when we did (ref'd) that tourney over in "x" and player "x" was there? well he's getting ready to be a Leaf (for example). Some of them I may not have ref'd but I knew the ref and he has a pretty funny story about player "x" in juniors or whatever so he shares it etc.

Also understand that I'm 40 so my "network" is more on a downward trend than upward. I used to know a lot more people than I do now. Heck now instead of getting player "x", I get player "X's" SON!!!!!!!!! LMFAO!

Thanks BB. "It's not that tough, but it can be tough for some guys, but for other guys it's not tough, but for most it's not tough, a few do have it tough though". Glad we cleared that up!

This may be blasphemous, but after looking at what's available, maybe there isn't the impact player out there. I mean Richards has concussion, Arnott isn't the same player, and Weiss isn't everything. I've been shouting make a move since June last year, but don't make one if the return isn't significant.

I can tell you this, whoever is reporting Vokoun etc to Caps is crazy and has some sort of agenda whether it be their own or otherwise or doesn't follow the team. There has been no talk of obtaining another goalie and no talk of Varly or Neuvy being moved to my knowledge. GMGM has said repeatedly that he's happy with Varly and Neuvy and he should be. That's not where we need help.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 25, 2011 1:37 PM | Report abuse

they wanted to do more than 2C. And I mentioned they had a deal in place and I dont know what happened not involving a 2C. It still may happen but at this point I think the team ended up backing out and wanting more. I think another team is going to step up and pay the price.

Right now their focus is 2C, if something else comes up though it wouldnt surprise me.

@kcbrichmond interesting the 25% of what I would assume are Caps fans, because who else would actually take time to do a poll, are just looking for us to do any more. GMGM will wait until Sunday or Monday when team start to lower asking price for players.. I have faith that GMGM will do something that will help this team go deep in playoffs.. GMGM might be a better scout, I mean he finds all of these players in the draft yet, come trade time, can't seem to part with any of his pet projects. GMGM need to realize if he waits to long this team shot at a cup will have come and gone... I think Jason Arnott would be a nice fit for this team as a second line center, I dont think you would have to give up as much for him as you would other players being shopped.. Statsny is not coming to the Caps. 6+ mill for a 2nd line center would hamstring the caps for years to come... You gotta realize the Caps arent going to get any star players.. It will be someone who can fill in for a playoff run.. So get over your hopes of landing a star player wont happen, will be a role guy that can provide leadership, and fill a void...

There are plenty of "tweak" moves that could be made right now is my guess. Obviousyly GMGM wants to see if he can "tango" with the bigger prize so he won't need the "tweaks". I love this time of yr esp when we're contenders.

I still say we should have kept Brendan Morrison and we probably wouldn't be having as many nightmares. That's hindsight, of course, but centers are just too hard to come by. I like 3 or 4 of ours. I just don't think we're in that bad of shape. MJ is progressing nicely. This guy is the real deal.

Posted by: Cayugalaker | February 25, 2011 2:08 PM | Report abuse

Sorry, I thought the Foote trade was official.

How many buyers are left? Wash, LA, Tor, Clb, Min, , NYR

Who is left? Hemsky, Penner, Weiss, Stasny, Richards, McDonald, Boyes, Bogosian

It is possible all of those guys get moved prior to Monday. That is a lot of talent. Any one of them could make a big difference. I think we get at least one or two big fish.

Posted by: underpants2 | February 25, 2011 2:13 PM | Report abuse

@cayugal

I mentioned this last night, MJ is the real deal. But dont be surprised if he is our real deal 3C for the next few years. Skates extremely well, sound defensively, but doesnt put up much O and doesnt really have the offensive instinct. At least thats my take.

Posted by: CAPSHOCKEY2 | February 25, 2011 2:19 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: CapsBaby | February 25, 2011 2:26 PM | Report abuse

I had hoped t keep Morrison as well, but thought we maybe would pick up someone better over the summer. When we didn't I believe the plan was to give Flash & MJ a chance at 2C & 3C. Flash didn't pan pout obviously, but I think the playing time that MJ has received would not have been there if we had signed Morrison. So it has been good for MJ's development, but I would like to get a veteran rental player for the stretch run and playoffs.

Posted by: boomer44 | February 25, 2011 2:27 PM | Report abuse

@Cay
Zubrus will not be here when we wake up. His contract is brutal. $3.4M for 30 POINTS! Granted points aren't everything but I'm not paying but 1/3 of that contract for what he is today.

MJ is the real deal but he's a rookie. He's clearly heads & shoulders above MP. That being said we need a better option with more consistency at the 2C position for a long playoff run. Maybe next yr but not this one.

If GMGM can pull off a deal maybe MJ can be afforded a couple yrs at the 3C spot and fill in 1C & 2C as injuries occur. Thinking that would be ideal.

U2 - everybody on Ottawa is up for sale so you have to include Spezza & Alfredsson. Phillips wants to stay but may waive NTC to go to Montreal. They're doing their best Caps "rebuild" impression. Ottawa has a serious handicap now that the Caps didn't when we did ours. There is still a salary cap floor so can't shed too much salary and go below that floor. Someone mentioned that one option was to wait and see how the weekend games go, so that a team that cant decide if they need to be a buyer or seller, has a little more time to make that choice. A couple points behind and out of the top 8 may make a team think "hmm, maybe we should become sellers".

So saying something like "will not", is a bit too much to assume. Perhaps "likely will not" would be better. :)

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 25, 2011 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Flames are not trading Iggy. He is the face of the franchise and the leader of that team that even if it falls out this year will be better next year and have a new GM who has been working toward that without hurting them this year.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Teams have already played 60 games. If they dont know already if they want to buy or sell - they are in big trouble regardless.

Posted by: capsfansince74 | February 25, 2011 3:07 PM | Report abuse

From what I can tell CBA pp 198-200, the lower range of the cap is $16.0M below the cap ceiling.

http://www.nhlpa.com/About-Us/CBA/

That would make it for this year $41.4M. Read the example of how they would calculate the 2nd year and how top and bottom would be $16M apart, that's how I came up with that.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 25, 2011 3:08 PM | Report abuse

1pt out of playoff contention may put you on the fence capsfansince74.

Yeah you want to make the playoffs, but if you feel you might not make it and need to do some over haul...you may give up on the season and sell. Or you may think that 1 essential piece is missing and put you over the top and ergo you decide to be a buyer. You dont have to make a choice until the final day...so why rush?

Posted by: SeminAllOverTheIce | February 25, 2011 3:10 PM | Report abuse

@capsfansince74, not all the time look at a team like CBJ. 4 points out right now with two games in hand. By the end of the weekend they could be 6-8 out and even with games in hand they are sellers. They win both their games and they could be only a point or two back with games in hand and are buyers.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 3:11 PM | Report abuse

they become buyers because they win two in a row this weekend - Than they lose three in a row and are screwed again.

Posted by: capsfansince74 | February 25, 2011 3:19 PM | Report abuse

@capsfansince74, at the point of the deadline teams have to make a choice, it may not be what it would have been if they knew the future but if they did they would never be sellers. If the trade deadline was at the start of Feb, Dallas and Colorado would have been buyers. If they had still fallen like they have then it is bad for them but you have too look at your team at the time of the deadline and make a decision based on what you think at that time.

Posted by: icehammer97 | February 25, 2011 3:24 PM | Report abuse

@SeminAllOverTheIce
I will say it again the Caps will not make any trades until after this weekends game.. Why would they make a trade on a game day..Knowing GMGM he will wait until last minute. You would think having the last few days off they would have made a trade. This not happening show they will wait and see how this weekend plays out..

It appears to me, while some maybe arm chair bench boss, there is alot of knowledge about this game on this board and that a certain scarf model should read too.

Thank you All

Posted by: bqts | February 25, 2011 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Waiting to the end of the deadline can be smart. By the end of the weekend other teams might feel they need to start selling players before the window closes to get something. Some team will clue in that they have no chance and consider a deal they might not have last week.

Thats good if you like what they have...but sometimes no deal is still the best deal. These selling teams will hold out to be sure they know what cards are available - they owe it to their fans not to jump the gun and make an early trade.

Maybe the best guy isn't available until Monday.

But who outside of Fisher did you want? Fisher was going to Nashville b/c B Murray did him a favor for him being such a good role model in the Ottawa organization. So he traded him where he could be with his family.

Outside of that who do you want? Lets say you want the Dallas/Pitt deal. The equivalent to Goligoski would be Alzner or Carlson. Would you still do that deal? Not me.

So I'm not real concerned with the lack of movement. There will be more sellers each day and when games conclude on Sunday evening teams have to make a decision if they're buyin or sellin. There will be more sellers Mon AM than there are today. There will still be a flurry of activity on deadline day.

@yes: I see you won that bet last night. I knew Minn had made some upsets back when they went to the Finals, but didn't realize the magnitude of that.

The only way I will try and weasel out of making a mistake like that is to say that the OTL has skewed the pts distribution. Still, on paper, the North Stars win over the Hawks seems to be a bigger upset than Habs defeating Caps.

I felt Montreal handled the Caps well all last season - Ottawa did too last year - I had an awful feeling in my stomach when the Habs got 8th because some teams just match up better than others...still should have beat them, especially when up 3-1. Cant overlook that Pitt lost to the Habs in the same way and they also struggled with Ottawa. But yeah Minny had no business beating Chicago in '91 :)

IMO I don't think Laich will get more than $3 mil/yr considering his numbers are down this year and his not so stellar effort in the playoffs last year. Maybe 3yr/9$mil (2,7-3,0-3,3)

I think we should send a low pick at the draft to NYI for the rights of Nabokov to sign relatively cheap and use him as a backup. Then maybe one of our G's can be used in a trade. IMO we don't need both with Holtby in Hershey

And instead of trading Semin for Stastny, i think Green should be considered

Green + Perreault + 1st for Stastny + Liles?

Green is arguably the best offensive defensmen in the game, but doesn't get to exploit that to his full potential in this new more defensive-minded system, making him not as important to us.
Not to mention his vanishing-acts in the playoffs the last two years. Plus he's due for a raise soon which makes it very hard to fit both Semin and Stastny going forward

I think MaJo is going to be more of a really good #3C (รก la J.Staal), thats why we i feel we need a fulltime #2C, not a rental

John-Michel Liles is no MG52, but he can man the point on our PP, and is a lefty (which would move Ovi of the point). He's also $1mil cheaper than Green and wouldn't likely get much more if we wanted to re-sign him for the future.
Since Carlson-Alzner is probbly going to be our #1-2 D-pair going forward it wouldn't make any sence to tie up any more money into Green

We would then finally give Semin a chance to be consistent by playing with a playmaking C, and if he's not, then we can trade him for something we need

And to give Orlov the time he needs to transition his game to the NA-style in Hershey, we should try to pry away Michael Del Zotto from NYR where he's getting very few min/game at the moment.
He's also a left shoot for our PP

Would Schultz + 3rd be enough maybe?

If Hannan is to expensive to keep then there are a few good options to sign as UFA in the off-season, especially Jan Hejda comes to mind

And this is all very affordable, especially if the salarycap goes up!

Ovechkin ($9.538m) / Backstrom ($6.700m) / #1-2 RW ($3.500m)
Semin ($6.700m) / Stastny ($6.600m) / Fehr ($2.200m)
Laich ($3.000m) / Johansson ($0.900m) / Hendricks ($0.825m)
Bradley ($0.900m) / Steckel ($1.100m) / 4th line winger ($0.000m)
Beagle ($0.512m) / D.J. King ($0.637m)

Alzner ($1.600m) / Carlson ($0.845m)
Hejda ($2.500m) / Liles ($4.200m)
Erskine ($1.500m) / Del Zotto ($1.083m)
Cheap 7th D-man ($0.000m)

Neuvirth ($1.150m) /Nabokov ($1.500m)

SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $57,492,795; BONUSES: $0
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $1,907,205

There is still some wiggleroom with Steckel and Erskine to expensive for their respective roles

This leaves Varly, Hannan, Chimera, Poti, B.Gordon, Knuble out. And to get us a #1-2 RW Varly + some picks could do the trick. And considering this years draft to be the weekest in 20 years I wouldn't hang on to our picks that hard. Especilly with Eakin, Kuznetsov, Orlov and Holtby all 1-2 years away

Wow like Tom I knew the Stars were longshots in their final year but only 27 wins on the season and backed into the playoffs winning only 1 of their last 6.

I'm not arguing hard-core that we should get Zubrus back--I agree with Pokerface that his contract is too big. That said, let me play Devil's Advocate* for a moment and give some of the reasons why getting Le Zubi back in a Caps sweater might be a good idea:

--He is capable of hitting people.
--He has proven to be a good fit with Ovie and/or Semin
--NJ won't have his services anymore
--The ladies just loooooove his matinee-idol looks.

* = waka waka waka

On a more serious note, I'm not sure we'd really want Jason Spezza for two reasons:

1) If we don't end up winning the Cup after acquiring him, someone on this blog will inevitably blame him and start referring to him as "Spazza". I couldn't get behind that.
2) Doesn't he have a history of being kind of a head case?

No, if we're getting someone from Ottawa I'd much rather have Phillips or Alfredsson

Posted by: Rhino40 | February 25, 2011 4:11 PM | Report abuse

@walle, 1) Nabby would have to clear waivers to be traded, Detroit would still take him so it won't happen. 2) IF we made that trade with Colorado my bet is the PP points would be Ovie and Liles with Carlson getting some time when Liles needs a breath. 3) I really don't see NYR taking on extra salery considering they are looking to sign Richards in the offseason to play with Gabby. 4) That many moves with that many key members of the team would greatly mess up any chemistry we have. 5) I don't see us getting Poti and Chimmy off our Cap.

I am not trying to be critical but I just think that it is fun to think what you might do if you were in control there is no way almost any of that will happen in reality.

Pretty favorable schedule for the Caps for the rest of the season. If the season were to end now, only 9 of the Caps final 21 games are vs. teams in playoff position. Now, of course, in today's NHL there is a lot of parity (witness the crowded standings in the Western Conference). Still, we have few games left vs. the elite teams and a lot of games remaining vs. bottom feeders. Caps play single games vs. Flyers, Red Wings, and Lightning (whom I will consider "elite"). Caps have two vs. Canadiens (both away) and two vs. Hurricanes (both home). And single games vs. Blackhawks and Rangers. That's it for playoff teams. Not bad.

Caps have 8 "bottom feeder" games: 3 vs. Panthers, 2 vs. Islanders, 1 vs. Senators, 1 vs. Oilers, and 1 vs. Maple Leafs. The four remaining games are vs. teams in playoff contention: single games vs. Blues, Devils, Blue Jackets, and Sabres.

All in all, not too bad.

Last year the Flyers finished the last few weeks 4-7-2

Was that backing into the playoffs? Look how long they played in the playoffs. Hard to predict it isn't it?

@yes, which is why I have always said try to get better at the deadline for the playoffs because then anything could happen and you want to give yourself the best chance.

Cap'n: Sloan would have played for $0. But McPhee had to go and give him $700K.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 25, 2011 4:26 PM | Report abuse

@tom, I would play for $0 too if they let me, I would even sleep in the lockerroom so they wouldn't even have to spend money on a hotel room for me. I also have played all 6 positions so I could be the #13 forward, #7 D, and #3 goalie. They need one around with Brett Leonhardt gone, and I offer these services for food. Come on guys who work for the Caps who read this blog, just ask for my contact info.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 25, 2011 4:26 PM

$0 seems like a fair salary for getting to watch 82 games with all the esskay's and nachco's you can eat. i wouldn't think he'd need any additional money to do that.

@ icehammer97

Ok, i didn't know about the waivers, but would they still pick him up after the season? I could still se us trading one of our goailes though and sign a vet for backup. Hedberg, Nabokov, Roloson, Anderson, Turco are all out there as UFA for now.

Yes, you might be right, but for the second PP-unit Carlson and Del Zotto could be the pointmen and have Ovie on the halfwall.

And Nyr already would have, with Schultz included, 16 players signed for next year with aprox $14 mil left and Callahan and Dubinsky in for siginifcant raises, after next year Drury's $7,05 mil contract comes off, so I don't think it's impossible. Schultz contract isn't that bad.

I'm not saying they have to be done now, this is for next year mostly. Though I wouldn't mind the Green/MP/1st-Stastny/Liles trade happening now. The Schultz-scenario and Varly-scenario could happen during the off-season.
And as far as teamchemisty, I agree, it could mess up the whole thing, but it worked pretty well in 08 when Feds, Cooke and Huet came. It's as always a risk trading players, I just don't see us pulling a deep run this year with the current cast.

@tom, don't know how many of the others have played before, I know I was never even close to NHL or even NCAA D3 level but I have played all 6 positions which is something that not many can say. If the Caps do sign me to my $0 contract I will suggest they hire you to help fit me under the cap.

I will be getting home just in tiome for puck drop. Tonight they are on NHL Network, so HD. God knows why the non-HD Center Ice games are the blurriest broadcasts known to man. If anyone knows who/where to call/complain, let me know. All that money we pay for Center Ice and the picture is terrible. They should be ashamed.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 25, 2011 5:01 PM | Report abuse

@ Capt_Kirk_in_AZ

I know, that's why i left $1,9 mil in cap space, and our #1-2 RW wouldn't have to earn $3,5 mil either, it could be less.

I would also gladly tweak that roster even more. Boyle/betts/Konopka would glady center my 4th line instead of Steckel, all of them cheaper I'm sure.

I would get a cheaper 6th D and use that extra money + the $ saved on not playing Steckel for a good defensive 3rd-liner to play with Laich and MaJo to really shut other teams top-lines down, he11, maybe even Beagle could do that and save us even more?
And I would use Hendricks on the 4th-line wing with Bradley and Betts/Boyle/Konopka to hit everything moving on the ice.

And, much as I like Greenie, I would consider moving him even up for a TOP flight centericeman

What bothers me is that we're asking for a "solid veteran goalie" and we sorta' had that with Theodore. But every time, he effed up, everyone wanted to castrate him and ship him off. Now that he's gone and we have our two young goalies, who I feel are doing a good job for goalies breaking into the NHL, we're asking for a veteran goalie...again? How are they supposed to make the jump from the AHL to the NHL if they don't play in the NHL? They could prove themselves in the AHL a thousand times but the knock on that is "they're not playing against NHL caliber players". Then, you get them into the NHL and everyone and their mother's uncle wants someone with "experience", a "veteran", which usually means someone past their prime who can get you a few wins for less money. It'll be a vicious cycle and you people want to ride that ride...again? Gluttons for punishment. Ride the two goalies, until one of them shows dominance. Either way, we have two bomb a$$ goalies who can only get better over time.

@pokerface
I for one appreciate your insight. I agree with you that Marcus Johansson is the real deal, and think that as an all around center he is better than Perrault.

However, I would love to see the Caps move Perrault to a wing on the 2nd line, I think that he is right now better offensively than Johansson and could thrive on the wing where his size would not matter as much, especially if playing opposite a larger winger who can crash the net.

@ LeftCoastCapsFan

I agree with you, our goailes are doing a very fine job and I'm pleased with both of their performances!
But i think for the team going forward, they would benefit more from what one of them could bring back, and since only one of them can play at the time, and with Holtby down in Hershey, they should chose one to go with andr trade the other one for something we need more.

I think most of the people "hating" on Theodore was because he was making $4 mil/yr and not performing up to his paycheck.

Maybe a Neuvirth + 7th for James Van Riemsdyk + Blair Betts?
Flyers really need to shed some serious salary for next year. They have 18 players signed to contracts worth $58 mil. I'm sure they want to resign Leino, Carcillo, Nodl, Powe and they only have 1 goaile signed.

Posted by: Walle | February 25, 2011 5:59 PM | Report abuse

@Lefty:

Good point about the talk of acquiring a veteran goalie.

I would also have to think that it's possible that the Caps might have gotten a reputation--deservedly or not--for treating veteran goalies poorly in a crunch (viz. Kolzig, Theodore; perhaps Huet and Johnson too).

If so, player agents may have a role in significantly driving up the price GMGM would have to pay to acquire a veteran 'keep (figuring they ought to "get as much as they can while the gettin' is good").
