Hi Bruce. First time caller. Excuse me for being a little nervous. Love the birdcalls! Anyway here's my question, I'll hang up and listen. Thanks!
"What the #*&# were you and GMGM thinking this summer? I mean everybody including my blind Aunt Ruby knew this team needed a veteran 2nd line Center and a big tough smart Defenseman! What the $%&# were you guys doing over there at Kettler all summer, playing cornhole or something? Geez!" Thanks for taking my call, bye bye.

Hey Bruce,

Since you love all the bird calls, can you give me your best impression of the Springtime-choking Capital?

i hate to say it - but that's funny (i'd expect something like this more from a pens fan though)

@Kirk

I'm as big of a Caps fan as they come, but after three straight game 7 losses at home, a change is needed

a change is needed

Posted by: philarmy | October 22, 2010 6:08 PM

this is true - i actually submitted a question for BB - the gist of the question was: in 07/08 there was plenty of effort each night - was that your motivation or just the players trying to keep jobs/impress the new coach?
09/10 and this year less effort - what has changed?

BB needs to demand more (with some kind of consequence) or the players need to hold each other accountable for their play on the ice (apply some peer pressure)

@pkme
@capscoach

Thanks for the Hunter player and coaching stats. We need a change and 32 may be the answer.

Capscoach, I would not be as ticked if I really thought Tim Thomas was that great, but he's not even the starter on out Olympic team. So, when GMGM exlains why we lost to Ryan Miller in round two, it will be the old "Goalie came up Large on the Caps again" excuse.

Good goalies get pounded all the time by hard working teams with skill. (Unfortunately, that's Syd and the boys and Datsuk and company. Not us.)

I want win the cUp, and I'm not seeing much "ANGER" out there. This was the year we took no prisoners.

Posted by: Hunterforcoach | October 22, 2010 6:29 PM

agreed - it is all here in this blog. the 'dark siders' should use their 'evil jedi mind tricks' and tranfer it where it belongs
if this team could play with the anger that is displayed here - i think they could get 60+ wins

Per John Walton on the Bears pregame show:

Matty Perreault and Jay Beagle are scratched, listed as 'unavailable'. No official moves have been announced, but Walton is assuming they're being recalled to Washington....

My question to BB: When are you going to hire some of these great coaches commenting on this blog?
My question to GMGM: How can you be so stupid and put such a lousy team together so quick?
My question to the nurses on the psychiatric ward: Don’t we get the pills today? We seem to be more delusional than ever…

Bruce-

There has been a lot of criticism of you and McPhee for not getting a two way center and a tough top two D man, but it is clear that all you really need to win is a Hot Goalie. Wouldn't the CAPS be a much better team if we had a HOT GOALIE?

Posted by: festus75 | October 22, 2010 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Bruce-

Presuming the CAPS make the playoffs this year, if you tank in round one again this year where do you think McPhee will be GM'ing next year? Would you consider Coaching under him there?

gee so OV is overplaying his ice team...what a good example for the captain to make....he should lose his C to someone who is a team first not a I am The Great 8 and i make my own rules type....he needs to get his head on straight and like Luongo doesnt deserve the C just because he is the best player.Wake up gmgm your star is starting to tarnish

Posted by: wendel2 | October 22, 2010 7:22 PM | Report abuse

@festus75
You solved it! I've been selling center and defenseman for months, but you said it. All we need is a HOT Goalie like Montreal had, and we're going to win it all! If we can't get a HOT Goalie, can we dress a goalie who is HOT? (My vote: Jessica Alba)!

Posted by: kcbrichmond | October 22, 2010 7:36 PM | Report abuse

hey wendel, who died and anointed Brooks Laich the next Dale Hunter??

he's more of a floater than Ovi who at least hits people... all Laich is good at is to sound good in front of a mic.

Backs is more of a captain material and competes harder than Laich.

Posted by: hbcapsfan | October 22, 2010 8:05 PM | Report abuse

@tess2201

Agree that callups are a-happening. Given that the Caps are playing poorly and need a shakeup. Also, given that Green and Gordon will not be coming back tomorrow and are eligible to be put on injured reserve. And Bradley is already on Injured Reserve.

Surprised we haven't called anyone up on defense.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 22, 2010 8:11 PM | Report abuse

Also, I am glad to see that we are sitting in 6th place in the standings for the Eastern Conf. With it being so close to the playoffs, atleast we make it in... :)

It is a long year and we still have a ton of games to play. I am happy as ling as we make the playoffs. When we are in the middle of the season and at the bottom of the standings, I will be worried. Until then, Go CAPS!!!!

Posted by: hbcapsfan | October 22, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Change the fricken PP around, it's been horrible since the playoffs last year. Try taking Ovie off the point try Backstrom there, put Ovie and Semin in the cirles. Backstrom wouldn't be the only passing centerman at the point. Brad Richards does a heck of a job for the Stars. At least try something. And Ovie doesn't need to play the full 2 minutes or play defense the last 4 minutes of the game, in regular season game # 6 & 7...That's crazy, if it was the playoffs I could see it.

WELL THEY JUST STINK BECAUSE THEY ARE POORLY COACHED AND HAVE HORRENDOUS DISCIPLINE AND BAD SYSTEMS. THEY ALL WANT TO BE A CELEBRITY. HOW WOULD SCOTTY BOWMAN COACH THIS TEAM? tHE ANSWER IS BETTER. MAYBE I WILL EAT THESE WORDS BUT BB NEEDS TO GO. NICE GUY AND BETTER THAN HANLON BUT THAT IS A WEAK COMPARISON. OH AND THOSE THAT WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE PRESIDENTS TROPHY WHICH IS A JOKE CAN LOOK AT THE CAPS AND SAY THAT THEY PLAYED IN THE WEAKEST DIVISION IN THE WHOLE NHL TO GET THAT TROPHY. HOWEVER BOTH TAMPA AND ATLANTA IN MY OPINION WILL PUNISH THE CAPS SEVERELY. FLORDIA NOT SO MUCH. TAMPA WILL BE THE SE CHAMPIONS THIS YEAR BECAUSE THEY HAVE ONE OF THE MOST CREATIVE YOUNG COACHES IN THE NHL AND A FABULOUS ROSTER. MAYBE NOT AS GOOD AS THE CAPS BUT THEY WILL BE BETTER AS A TEAM

Posted by: pkme | October 22, 2010 10:07 PM | Report abuse

THE OLD CAPS TEAM WE USED TO TALK ABOUT HOW AWESOME THE CAPS DEFENSE AND TEAM DEFENSE WAS AND HOW WEAK THEIR OFFENSE WAS. GO LOOK AT THE CAPS TOTAL OFFENSE IN THE 80'S COMPARED TO NOW. I THINK EVERYONE WOULD BE SURPRISED THAT IT WAS BETTER IN MANY STATISTICAL AREAS THAN EVEN LAST YEAR. I KNOW THE GAME WAS DIFFERENT BUT NUMBERS ARE NUMBERS. WE ARE STILL TALKING ABOUT HOT GOALIES AND SHUT DOWN DEFENSE FRON TWENTY SOME YEARS AGO. ALSO THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF THE PLAYOFFS LAST YEAR. HOT GOALIE AND SHUT DOWN DEFENSE. OH WHAT WILL WE EVER DO. CLOG THE CENTER AND SET UP A TRAP AND OUR BELOVED CAPS WILL CRAP THEIR PANTS. ESPECIALLY IF A GOALIE HAS SOMEWHAT OF A DECENT GAME. THE VELOCITY AND MOVEMENT OF THE SHOTS STUNK. THE LOOKS WERE AWFUL AS WELL. GIVE ME A BREAK ABOUT THOMAS. BILLY SMITH WHERE ARE YOU?

Posted by: pkme | October 22, 2010 10:16 PM | Report abuse

MP and Beagle have been recalled. So something is either up trade wise or they are sending a strong message to Flash and Steckle. Very odd that they'd call up 2 Centers in my opinion.

BROOKS LAICH SHOULD ALSO BE CAPTAIN. HE ACTS LIKE A LEADER LOOKS LIKE A LEADER AND IS A LEADER. OVI IS TOO BUSY FOR THIS JOB.

A question about "optional practices" would seem to be in order...

Posted by: chombie13 | October 22, 2010 10:37 PM | Report abuse

ONE ALSO HAS TO BE CUTRIOUS ABOUT SOURAY BEING IN HERSHEY AS WELL. MY GUESS IS THAT THERE COULD BE A TRADE. MY GUESS IS THAT THE CAPS WILL TRADE FLASH, A DRAFT PICK, POSSIBLY A PROSPECT AND ASK THE OILERS TO PICK UP A COUPLE MILLION OF SORAYS CONTRACT FOR THIS YEAR. WHO KNOWS IF THE CAPS WILL RESIGN SEMIN NEXT YEAR OR HAVE THE CAPABILITY TO DO SO. SEMIN MIGHT FETCH AS MUCH AS 8-9 MILLION. THIS WOULD ALLOW THEM TO ABSORB THE FULL HIT OF SOUAY AND GIVE THEM FLEXIBILTY TO DO A COUPLE OTHET THINGS.

Posted by: pkme | October 22, 2010 10:37 PM | Report abuse

The biggest problem with this team is the fact that BB lacks a long-term/playoff vision. He coaches from game to game which is the reason why he depends too much on Ovi and Green.

That might win him a few more games during the season but doesn't prepare the team for the playoffs. Ovi can and will be just as productive playing 18-20 minutes/game just as Green playing a few minutes less every game.

The team won't suffer, it will benefit during the season as well as the playoffs.

souray would really help the caps

Posted by: pkme | October 22, 2010 10:47 PM | Report abuse

Souray is the play is my guess. He is way too good to be playing in the AHL and the Oilers do not want Souray back becaus of his open comments about management. The Oilers need a guy like Flash. Maybe a Boyd Gordon also.

Posted by: pkme | October 22, 2010 10:53 PM | Report abuse

pkme:
in your 'passion and pure frustration' you may have overlooked (or just didn't know) that edm can not pay any portion of souray's contract if they were to trade him. souray cleared waivers when he was assigned to hershey and edm would have to pay half his salary for the remainder of his contract if he were called back up and plucked off of re-entry waivers.

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | October 22, 2010 11:00 PM | Report abuse

souray would need to have pass waivers. they cannot just trade him to caps. someone else will pick him before the caps pick. Most likely bieksa would be in play.

@hocki

We know we can't coach in the NHL, but also see cUp winning coaches like Peter Laviolette wizzing by us on I95 up to Philly. Did you think the Flyers showed up ready to play some "smash mouth" play off
hockey ? Or, was that a fluke. Hell, Laviolette is a REAL NHL coach who doesn't dither around lost during crucial playoff games. Did you see how the Caps came out in an elimination game in their own building ? They acted surprised that the Habs were putting up a fight. Didn't happen that way in Philly.

BB has been out coached for four playoff series. That's enough. No, I can't coach the team, but there are many who can do a much better job than BB in the playoffs.

I've been following this team since before these Caps were born. I know bad hockey when I see it. GMGM has put togeather a "fun" regular season team. You know their playoff record. But what makes it worse is when you watch the playoff games after we exit. We had no business being in the finals. Those were two heavy weight teams throwing hay makers. We won't get close to the finals with this current roster. "All hat and no cattle."

What playoffs are you watching ? The Hershey Bears. Because if you think this coach and GM have done good job, you're not watching the Caps in the playoffs.

Capt Kirk and Samb

Thanks for setting me straight on that one and you both are correct. That being said Soray will most likely never wear an Oilers uniform again. It is possible regardless that he could end up with the Caps. A deal regardless of the complexities could be done and worked out. Give me your thoughts?

Posted by: pkme | October 22, 2010 11:51 PM | Report abuse

pkme:
i didn't say what samb99 pointed out. if edm were to try and trade souray - he would still have to pass through waivers. i don't think all 28 teams would pass that up and even if they did - why would the caps trade any assets if they could get him via waivers. i can't see the caps trying to make any deal with edm for souray. if the caps really want souray their best bet is to wait and see if he must clear waivers again - then if the other 28 teams pass - the caps can pluck him.
i think edm is waiting for a condition where if they were to recall him - some team in dire need of a D will claim him. i'm not sure what would happen if edm did a recall and no one claimed him.

Did a some research on Ovi's average shift length during the Caps' first seven games, the 2010 World Championships, and the Olympics. Listed are the top 10 in each category.

So somehow, Bykov is able to manage Ovi's shifts during two international tournaments where medals and Russia's honor were at stake while BB is helpless to control Ovi during the first month of the regular season? Remember when we all called Bykov a dolt?

Maybe this will be his farewell speach, goodbye BB, i won't miss you. But the real question is...how will he find time in between hawking some book, dancing for money with zimmerman, hanging out with the Gieco caveman or cleaning carpets with Hadid? I for one won't miss this underachiever, hey what's Phil Jackson doing these days? He's proven that he can win with a bunch of superstars.

Or," Caps get outhustled in opener by Atlanta team that is serious about making the playoffs"

Or, "Knuble blames Caps loss in opener to 2 Hawks added to Atlanta lineup"

No update this morning? He!!, I even slept in on west coast time and no update on a game day where players are being recalled?

Anyone got the scoop?

On another subject, either all the Kool-Aiders have left or they've just clammed up, because this blog here is decidedly against Boudreau. BTW, he did not get outcoached in all four playoff series. Let's be honest, in that grand series in '09, he did manage to outcoach Torts.

Jury's still out maybe if he got outcoached vs Flyers or if they just had the better team since deciding factor was netcrashing and we didn't have those kind of players on the roster. Let's be honest here too that GMGM also got out-GM'd in all those rounds.

We've all read the latest Ted's Take though so maybe the boss is getting weened off the Kool Aid.

While Bykov could manage Ovi's shift length, we had plenty of other grounds of criticisms for him, like PP personnel and leaving Nabby in way too long.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 23, 2010 11:51 AM | Report abuse

And now we hear of more forward injuries:

Marcus Johansson has a hip flexor injury. (I did noticed that he was MIA at the morning skate this morning.)

Green and Poti reported that they're "iffy" for tonight

We know that Green's been out and Poti was back but we have no spares available if a D-man goes down.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | October 23, 2010 11:59 AM | Report abuse

In my opinion we don't need a second line center because i think that when the playoffs come around, Johansson will be a capable second liner, and IMO he is ready now. So that leaves flash or MP as our 3rd line center. If MP is the 3rd line center, i say we trade flash for a shutdown d man, but if Flash is set to be our 3C then theres no reason to trade him. We def. need at least one more solid d man if not two, maybe a guy like Brett Lebda(7th dman in Toronto, but would be our 4-5) or Regehr( would cost more) because Erskine should not play at all in the playoffs even if there is an injury. IMO what we really need is a coaching change. Our systems just aren't working. Even our offense isnt working and we still cant get the puck out of our zone. Our D isnt that bad, its the way he has them play. BB just cant seem to fire up the guys anymore

Posted by: rockthered90 | October 23, 2010 12:27 PM | Report abuse

about Ov's shift length:

It works for him! He is not nearly as effective on short shifts. BB may not be the best coach, but he knows better than anyone else on here how to make ovechkin effective.
