Why the Canadian National Anthem? Neither of these two teams are based in Canada.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | November 13, 2010 7:16 PM | Report abuse

Because Buffalo is so close to the border, and Maple Leafs tickets are uber expensive. So a large part of the crowd is Canadian

Posted by: aglatfelter | November 13, 2010 7:17 PM | Report abuse

According to Wikipedia re: Canadian national anthem:

One American team, the Buffalo Sabres, goes a step further and performs both anthems before every game, a nod to Buffalo's location near the Canadian border and the team's substantial number of Canadian fans

I was wondering too, @FloridaCapsFan, and googled it.

...not diggin the Alzner stashe.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 13, 2010 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Solid period by the Caps. Numbers look good and we have the lead.

Lots of fumblin of the puck and slippin, hope that changes, because we had big time chances.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 13, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

hmmm so Poti is part of a three D-men rotation with #4 & #89 now?

that was a great move signing him to an extention then, wasn't it??

Posted by: joek443 | November 13, 2010 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin's defense is so remarkably bad at times. I don't know how any player at this level, superstar or not, can get away with it.

He leans so heavily on Backstrom and his other linemates to do all the dirty work while he just passively stares at the puck with no attention to his mark.

I understand that he's not a centerman but he has defensive responsibilities, too.

He'll make a solid defensive play "occasionally" but that's not how to play a role on a good defensive team. It needs to be a regular part of your game like shooting and hitting.

Just one of the countless examples was towards the end of the period where Backstrom basically had to cover two guys with Ovechkin just casually trying to track the guy from behind. It led to a golden scoring opportunity in the slot for Buffalo. Just an ounce more of energy and effort and the puck is out of the zone.

This kind of stuff happens with him regularly in 9 out of 10 games. It's maddening, particular when we have a lead. He has to improve in this area and the coaches need to demand it of him and drill it into him.

I almost wonder if he's overly conscious of the goal scoring race because he had seemed to be trying harder defensively in recent games.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 13, 2010 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and a similar play occurred against TB the other day when we were up 4-3...

People will remember that he scored moments later but his awful defense nearly led to a tie game just before that.

so you talked to BB - poti is in a rotation?

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 13, 2010 8:01 PM | Report abuse

If a guy is making a sixth of your team payroll and getting this much ice time, he owes it to the team and the franchise to be a complete player and commit himself to both ends of the ice.

It's also the responsibility of the coaching staff to demand it of him and not cater to his "superstar" status.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 13, 2010 8:02 PM | Report abuse

so you talked to BB - poti is in a rotation?
--------------

well he's not injured, is he? the NHL is still in the Stone Age when it comes to revealing injuries but since nobody has mentioned anything injury-related, you're just gonna have to assume that Poti is a healthy scratch.

Posted by: joek443 | November 13, 2010 8:10 PM | Report abuse

...not diggin the Alzner stashe.
--------------------------------

I think he's trying to look like Langway, not a bad idea.

if he starts to play like him as well, then we'll have something... scoring one goal/year is Langway-like as well.

Posted by: joek443 | November 13, 2010 8:13 PM | Report abuse

common sense would say poti probably tweaked something - not re-injured - and hes sitting out to ensure it is fully healed. its only game 17 - no reason to push poti to play just because sloan is a #9d

Great KILL!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 13, 2010 8:19 PM | Report abuse

you don't see a slap shot like that from a D too often these days for some reason... that was MacInnis-like.

Posted by: joek443 | November 13, 2010 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Even though he gave up that goal, Holtby seems to be playing a lot better this game than against Philly (granted the game against Philly was his first start)

Posted by: aglatfelter | November 13, 2010 8:27 PM | Report abuse

I agree with you JoeB..Dammit!

Posted by: aglatfelter | November 13, 2010 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Vanek is HIGHLY overpaid.

Wait a minute, THIS IS OUR PERIOD!

WE CANNOT GIVE THIS WEAK TEAM THE VICTORY!!!!

FIGHT!

GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 13, 2010 8:40 PM | Report abuse

I don't get it...Flash was hooked which CAUSED him to loose control of his stick and we get the 4 minutes? I know the bleeder rule, but that seems ridiculous to me.

on another note...this is quite the embaressing period!

Posted by: capscoach | November 13, 2010 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Not a good period.

AND I AM STILL WAITING FOR OVIE TO SHOW THE F UP!!!

WHERE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE WORLD!?!?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | November 13, 2010 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Yikes. The Caps were definitely sleepwalking that period. I dont think they were used to being up a goal after the first. Hopefully now that they are down 2-1 after a period they will think they will put in the strong period and come back and get the 2 points

Posted by: aglatfelter | November 13, 2010 8:49 PM | Report abuse

Hmmmm....MJ gets to play on the first line for a bit

erskine jumping up allowed the caps to keep the puck in the o-zone

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | November 13, 2010 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Possibly the worst game I've ever seen from Ovechkin. He's making Steckel look like Datsyuk comparatively. Hand of stone plus poor defense.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 13, 2010 9:25 PM | Report abuse

I saw a few of the guys at Fight Night on Thursday after the game - King's a big guy! Karl's stache is his support for men's cancer awareness. Movember is backed by Lance Armstrong's Live Strong. All in all, he looked hilarious but I give the guy credit for the support.

Posted by: CapsSighting | November 13, 2010 9:30 PM | Report abuse

Alzner was terrific tonight, not even counting the goal.

He still has a lot of adjusting and learning to do but he's a bright player.

The Carlson/Alzner pairing has been very solid.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 13, 2010 9:34 PM | Report abuse

He didn't look overpaid there... sick goal. Worked Carlson over.

Holtby still the MVP for sure.

Ovechkin the LVP.

The refs were questionable, too.

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 13, 2010 9:42 PM | Report abuse

does anyone know why it was a double minor? i saw no blood.

Posted by: rachel216 | November 13, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

Two games with only 1 PP! Caps have to draw more penalties.

Could someone please explain that 4 minutes for Flash...I mean I know players are responsible for their stick, but he only caught him because he was being hauled down by the hook.

Ovie has got to step it up...he is not digging like he used to...he is just floating around. I am sure he will figure it out.

Did Bradley lend the sabres all his paper thin skin?

That game just sucked! unfortunately I had a feeling that would happen. No biggie though...pick ourselves up for Atlanta 2morrow.

Posted by: capscoach | November 13, 2010 9:48 PM | Report abuse

is it just me or does Ovi have more whiffs than shots?

i had a feeling that was going to happen. they competed but not at the level they did against higher ranked opponents. that was a problem last year as well.

well, get back on the horse tomorrow and turn it around.

GO CAPS!

Posted by: natresgroup | November 13, 2010 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunately capscoach, that's the rule. You have to have control of your stick at all times, even if you are getting hit or spun around. the sabres just bleed easily.

hopefully we step it up for the thrashers tomorrow

Posted by: aglatfelter | November 13, 2010 9:54 PM | Report abuse

The Sabres wanted it more than the Capitals did. Weird though, all those 4 minute minors.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | November 13, 2010 9:58 PM | Report abuse

As for Ovi, he's up there in the points race but he sure had a lousy game tonight.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | November 13, 2010 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Not that I'm defending OV, but there were a lot of guys that didnt seem to show up tonight. I dont think i heard Laich's or Knuble's name at all tonight.

On the other hand, MJ seemed to have a decent game

Posted by: aglatfelter | November 13, 2010 10:09 PM | Report abuse

At least Laich and Knuble were contributing in other areas - the d-zone, on the PK, etc...

Posted by: tmac2yao | November 13, 2010 10:10 PM | Report abuse

It was just an overall blah game...nothing horrible but nothing really good. Holtby looked pretty good. BB did a good job adjusting the lines....this loss is on the players and def. not him.

Lets also realize that the Sabres while a pretty crappy team, were not about to lose their 8th home game in a row without a fight...we also only had one PP and a whole lot of PK! and the flash 4 min was not his fault, and I really didn't get the unsportsmanlike call. Didn't seem like OV or Chim Chim did anything out of the ordinary.

Posted by: capscoach | November 13, 2010 10:15 PM | Report abuse

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Attn: John Carlson - your jockstrap is somewhere on the ice. That was a great move by Vanek.

Solid effort by Holtby.

I'm not a fan of Boudreau mixing the lines up all night long. You can't get any flow going. Bounces also went Buffalo's way tonight.

Oh well - still got a point.

Need harder play in our offensive end to create more penalties. Inexcusable the team has had two pp's in as many game. A joke.

Time to rebound quick and get ready for the Thrashers.

It's been a one point night.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | November 13, 2010 10:17 PM | Report abuse

@Johnathan6

2nd period we had 2 SOG, BB switches up the lines and Backie scored and we get more chances.

I really think this loss is on the players.

We need better passing in the offensive zone.

Posted by: capscoach | November 13, 2010 10:23 PM | Report abuse

@Capscoach - I couldn't agree more. I felt he was changing them around even in the first period though.

This loss was on the players - don't get me wrong. THe passing not only in the offensive zone but those low percentage stretch home run passes have to stop. It's an eyesore to watch at times. I realize I'm nitpicking. They did put forth a hard effort. Bottomline Buffalo got a much needed win for their own sake.

I'll take the point though. We'll get them in DC on Wednesday.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | November 13, 2010 10:28 PM | Report abuse

Cody Eakin scored the game winner on the PP at 1:46 into overtime tonight to give the Broncos a 2-1 win over Seattle on Cody Eakin Bobblehead night in Swift Current.

Calle Johansson comments on the state of the Caps:
Caps will never win a cup with Ovie and Semin's lack of defensive effort.
Semin still needing an interpreter is sign of lack of team commitment and a giant ego.
Compares Ovie to Federov in that it wasn't until Bowman convinced Feds that he needed get defensive to win what reallly matters as opposed to individual titles.
